Great news! We ended July at growth! We are now up to 68 members! Welcome our newest members Lucas Smith and Ashley Lucas. Thanks to the combined efforts of Becky Hagge and Andrew Ollis for recruiting Ashley. And thanks to Jackie Teske for recruiting Lucas! Great job guys! With the month of August being our charter month there are a lot of renewals needed. We do not expect everyone to renew so we really need to work together this month and get some new members! Also, just to let everyone know, Lucas Smith is hosting an M night on Sunday August 26th at Hidden Cove. Good times are bound to be had that night. Please bring yourselves along with any prospective members. It will be a great way for us to gain some new members! Ann Procopio Membership VP

ID Report
This general meeting we are having a debate for our ID activity. The topic will be
revealed at the meeting. Please email me if you have any ideas for topics!
Passport to Leadership and CPG Trainings have been absorbed into our Giraffe
Night the Monday after our general meetings. However, if you are unable to
attend the Giraffe Night, let me know by email ([email protected]) and we can
arrange a meeting for CPG Training and Passport.
Don't forget about new member orientation before each meeting, 6:30 pm!

If not, stop on by at the next NMO! It will be held before the next General

Competitions
The time has come for our third and final article on competitions. This last article will look at the scoring process for the
competitions. Next month’s GA will host many different competitions that we have talked about the last few months. The
schedule for the competitions will be:
Write-Up, Friday 9/7 9:00-9:30pm
Jaycee Jeopardy, Friday 9/7 9:30-10:00pm
Portfolio/Interview, Saturday 9/8 2:00-2:30pm
Speak Up, Saturday 9/8 2:30-3:15pm
Debate, Saturday 9/8 3:15-4:15pm
Remember, if you are on the fence about competing and think, “I’ll just compete next time in January.” Sorry, no can do!
In order to compete at the year-end GA in January, you have to have competed in either May’s or September’s GA. Now
is the time to seize the day!
The Speak Up topic for the September GA prepared speech is:
With the Olympic Games front and center this summer we all heard a lot of stories of athletes facing
adversity, overcoming fear, and going beyond even their own limitations to achieve greatness in their
sport. What does “going for the gold” mean to you in your life and how do you plan to achieve it?
Please pre-register for the competition you are choosing to participate in. You can find the link on the Illinois Jaycees
website at http://iljaycees.org/.
Good luck to everyone participating! I know President Becky and I are planning on competing. Who else wants to join in
on the fun?

September GA
The second trimester’s General Assembly will be held September 7-9th in Fairview Heights, IL (near St Louis). A full
registration for the weekend is now up to $75. There are always a lot of free trainings held. Competitions will also be
going on all weekend. See the article on competitions to find the schedule and Speak Up topic. The GA is a time to get
together with friends and Jaycees from throughout the state of Illinois. The awards presentations are a great time to get
inspired and to get ideas for new projects we can run in our community. This GA will also be the host to elections for the
State Officer positions for 2013. If you want to attend please contact me at [email protected] and I will fill you in on
how to register. If you have any questions about the GA don’t hesitate to ask! Most of the board members have
attended at least one GA in the past. I will have registration forms available at this Sunday’s General Meeting. Come
prepared with cash or a check made payable to “Gateway Region Jaycees”. (If you write a check you get $5 off of the

General Meeting
This month’s meeting is Sunday August 19 at Beef ‘O’Brady’s in Bourbonnais. Social Hour will begin at 6pm, New
Member Orientation at 6:30pm and the meeting will begin promptly at 7pm. We look forward to seeing you
there.
By-laws
Ladies and gentlemen, at this month’s general meeting (Sunday August 19) we will be voting on the by-
law changes for our organization. It is imperative to have members at this meeting as we need at least
25% of the membership present in order to vote. The proposed by-law changes were emailed to the
membership in the month of July 2012. Another copy will be emailed out with this copy of the
newsletter. Please look them over and come prepared if you have questions or comments.

Jaycee Member Spotlight
Name – Christina Norvell
Occupation – Fine Jewelry Associate at J. C. Penney
Hobbies – I enjoy spending time with family, friends and being involved with the Jaycees. I also enjoy listening to music, watching movies and curling up with a good business biography book.
What would be (or is) your dream project? – My dream project would be to partner with an organization or
business to collect used prom dresses. The used prom dresses would be given to teens that want to attend their high
school prom but cannot afford to pay for a dress.
What is something you gained from joining the Jaycees? - Confidence is the biggest payoff I have seen since
joining the Kankakee Area Jaycees last August. I am more confident about taking the initiative with projects our chapter
is working on.
What do you consider to be your best accomplishment (within or outside the Jaycees)? – I am most proud of
the new Jaycees Lately Blog. . It was very gratifying to see an idea go from concept to application on the web
site.
What does being a Jaycee mean to you? – The one word that stands out in my mind is empowerment. There
is no goal too small or too big that cannot be achieved with motivation and support from fellow Jaycees.
Is there anything else you would like to share about yourself? – I am also a volunteer tutor for the Adult
Literacy Initiative Expanded Program at Kankakee Community College. I have spent the past year tutoring a
learner with reading and spelling skills.
We REALLY Want To Hear From You!
The newsletter is truly the voice of the Jaycees and is our opportunity to tell our story to prospective members and the community.
Every member of the Jaycees plays an important role in our success as an organization. Become more involved! The newsletter has
always been open to contributions from anyone in the organization; however, we have only received a few articles from the general
membership.
Remember each of you has a reason for joining the Jaycees and that is a great place to start. We invite you to reflect on an event you
are involved in, look ahead to an event you are part of, tell us why you joined the Jaycees and/or what you hope to accomplish. The
sky is the limit!
Getting involved not only helps you understand the vision of the Jaycees, but it will help you grow as a person and a professional.
Make an IMPACT! General membership contributions are due to Jackie or me by the first Friday of each month.
