Brief History• Some say that the first
snowboard was a toy called the “Snurfer” in 1965
• It was not until the 70’s and 80’s that snowboarding stared to become popular
• In 1985 it gained official sport status, and it has snowballed ever since with events like the U.S. Open, the Winter X Games, and the Winter Olympics
Snowboarding and the Olympics
• First “Extreme” sport allowed in the Olympics
• Gave Snowboarding a family friendly image
Impact of Snowboarding on Skiing
• Snowboarding has helped evolved the freestyle (twin tipped) ski
• Forced Skiing to keep up in order to stay popular, thus making skiing better
