Philip Raeford Hargett Sr.

MONROESurrounded by his

loving family, Phil passed peacefully into God’s embrace at Har-ris Hospice at Presbyte-rian Hospital on Aug. 20, 2010, after a long, heroic fight against metastatic prostate cancer.

Philip Raeford Hargett was born July 6, 1941, in Peachland, to the late Jack R. and Sue C. Har-gett. When Phil was a young child his parents moved to Monroe, where Phil would live for the rest of his life. He loved Monroe and serving his community.

Phil joined his father in the family’s electri-cal contracting business in Monroe. Phil would build his career from this start with Hargett Electric Company to eventually becoming president of Starr Elec-tric, one of the largest industrial/commercial electrical contracting firms in the Carolinas with offices in Char-lotte, Columbia, Fay-etteville, Greensboro, and Raleigh. Phil went on disability leave from his position as president of Starr Electric this past December. Under his leadership, the com-pany won contracts for the electrical work on projects ranging from the construction of the Carolinas Panthers sta-dium (a joint venture with Howard Brothers

Electric) to the con-struction of the newly completed 54-floor Duke Energy tower in downtown Charlotte. To honor Phil’s contribu-tion to his company’s success, the company renamed their Charlotte office, as of January 1, 2010, to “Starr Electric Company—The Hargett Group.” At the same time, the company also established “The Har-gett Academy” which provides job-specific training to electrical apprentices.

Phil also found time to contribute to his be-loved community. For 20 years, from 1983-2003, Phil served on the Mon-roe City Council. During his tenure on the coun-cil, he was instrumental in the development of the Monroe Corporate Center. To honor his significant contribution to the development of this project, in 2005, the City of Monroe named a street in the Corporate Center, “Phil Hargett Court.”

Phil’s many other con-tributions to his commu-nity included serving on the Union County Plan-ning Board, chairing a Monroe-Union County Chamber of Commerce committee (receiving the award for “Best Chairman” in 1972), serving several years as a board member of Union County Habitat for Humanity, serving as a board member of the Union County affiliate of the American Heart Association and as a board member of Turn-ing Point domestic vio-lence program. In 2010, Turning Point awarded Phil “The Carolyn C. Adams Award” for his service to victims of do-mestic violence.

From 1999 to 2005, Phil served as chairman of the board of Monroe-based Trinity Bank. He was instrumental in seeing Trinity Bank be-

come a successful entity that eventually merged with Citizens South.

Phil also served his beloved church, Central United Methodist in Monroe, as chairman of the Board of Trustees, chairman of the Admin-istrative Board, chair-man of the Staff-Parish Relations Committee, and as a beloved Sunday School teacher for se-nior high youth.

Phil also served or-ganizations related to his profession. He was past president of the Carolinas Electrical Contractors Associa-tion (CECA), and past chair of the Carolinas Construction Education Foundation.

Phil was named “Union County Man of the Year” for the year 2005, following in the footsteps of his father who had received the same honor in 1959.

In 2009, Phil was in-ducted by the governor of North Carolina into “The Order of the Long Leaf Pine” to honor his lifetime of service to others.

Phil’s love for his large family was, and still is, clearly evident and deep-ly felt. He is survived by his devoted wife of 49 years, Beth; son, Philip of Charlotte and his partner, Bert; son, Scott, of Greensboro and his wife, Kit; son, Jack, of Wesley Chapel and his wife, Carrie; beloved grandchildren, Chris-ten, Dillon, Jackson, Mary Elizabeth, Lind-say, John, Jacob, and Caroline; sister, Betty Gary, of Kure Beach; brother, Dick Hargett, of Brevard, and his wife, Judy; sister, Kay Brewer, of Monroe and her hus-band, Bill; mother-in-law Elizabeth Hinton, of Monroe; sister-in-law, Joan Miles, of Monroe, and her husband, Da-vid; beloved nieces and nephews; aunt, Sarah Forbes.

Phil was preceded in death by his loving par-ents Jack and Sue Har-gett, his dear brother Max, and special friend, who was like a brother, Arthur “Bud” Rushing.

Phil’s family would like to expressly thank the following, who helped Phil fight the good fight against can-cer for so long: Dr. James Boyd and his car-ing staff; Dr. Oliver Sar-tor and his caring staff at Tulane University for their important work in the clinical drug trial Phil participated in; the absolutely angelic nurs-es and staff of Presbyte-rian Hospital’s Cancer Center and Harris Hos-pice unit; and dear fam-ily friend Dr. Ward Woo-dard for his invaluable expertise and support.

A service celebrating Phil’s life will be held on Sunday, Aug. 22, at 3 p.m. at Central United Methodist Church, 801 South Hayne St., Mon-roe. The family will re-ceive friends from 5 - 7 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 21, at Gordon Funeral Home, 1904 Lancaster Ave., Monroe.

Judy McManus, 69, died Wednesday, Aug. 18, 2010, at Springs Memorial Hos-pital in Lancaster, S.C.

A memorial service will be held 11 a.m., Sat-urday, Aug. 21, 2010, at Waxhaw Baptist Church.

Born March 16, 1941, in Waxhaw, she was the daughter of the late Roy Edward and Lucille Per-kins Haywood. She was a retired Registered Nurse.

Survivors include a son, John McManus, of Waxhaw; brother, Floyd Haywood, of Lancaster, S.C., and one grand-daughter.

Literary critic Frank Kermode dies in England

LONDON (AP) — Re-spected literary critic and Shakespeare scholar Frank Kermode has died, his publisher said. He was 90.

Regarded by some as Britain’s foremost crit-ics, Kermode was instru-mental in the creation of the London Review of Books, and his accessibil-ity made him a kind of bridge between the don-nish world of academic literature and novels as they were read by every-day people.

Bobby E. Threatt, 73, of Mint Hill, died Wednesday, Aug. 18, 2010, at Wilora Lake Re-habilitation Center.

Born April 30, 1937, in Monroe, he was the son of the late John Syl-vester Threatt and Lela Jane Haigler Threatt. He was a graduate of

Unionville High School. He was an employee of Cannon Mills and Woon-socket Spinning Com-pany. He retired after 40 years in the textiles in-dustry. Mr. Threatt was a member of Tabernacle ARP (now Craig Avenue Tabernacle ARP). He loved fishing, hunting and NASCAR racing. Mr. Threatt had a spe-cial spot in his heart for all of his nieces and nephews, including his times with Ashley and Jansen Taylor. He was a special uncle to Andy Rowe, whom he taught to fish. These fishing buddies enjoyed many fond moments togeth-er.

The service to cel-ebrate the life of Bobby E. Threatt will be held 2 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 21, in the Chapel of Wilson

Funeral & Cremation Service with Dr. John E. Hill, officiating. Dennis Cox, Robert Cox, Bobby McGraw, Andy Rowe, John Rowe and Johnny Taylor will serve as pall-bearers. Interment will follow at Sharon Memo-rial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the ser-vice.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Plunging into the Mideast peacemaker’s role that has defeated so many U.S. leaders, President Barack Obama on Friday invited Israel and the Palestin-ians to try anew in face-to-face talks for a historic agreement to establish an independent Palestinian state and secure peace for Israel.

Negotiations shelved two years ago will re-sume Sept. 2 in Washing-ton, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said. Obama will host Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian Presi-dent Mahmoud Abbas for dinner the night before.

The goal: a deal in a year’s time on the tough-

est issues that have sunk previous negotiations, in-cluding the borders of a new Palestinian state and the fate of disputed Jeru-salem, claimed as a holy capital by both peoples.

Iran prepares to start nuclear reactor after delays

BUSHEHR, Iran (AP) — Iranian and Russian nuclear technicians made final preparations to start up Iran’s first reactor on Saturday after years of delays, an operation that will mark a milestone in what Tehran considers its right to produce nu-clear energy.

Nationwide celebra-tions are planned for the fuel loading at the Bushehr facility in south-ern Iran, while Russia pledges to safeguard the plant and prevent spent

nuclear fuel from be-ing shifted to a possible weapons program.

Ranger who helped nab fugitives hailed as hero

ST. JOHNS, Ariz. (AP) — A forest ranger who alertly spotted a pair of fugitives at a remote Ari-zona campsite was hailed Friday as “a true hero” after his tip allowed a heavily armed law en-forcement contingent to capture the couple.

The efforts by the rang-er came at great risk. Fu-gitive John McCluskey had a gun in his posses-sion and said he wished he would have shot the forest ranger and arrest-ing officers when he had the chance, authorities said.

“He is a true hero,” Apache County Sheriff

Joseph Dedman said of the ranger. “He made con-tact. He was out there do-ing his job when he saw these two fugitives.”

McCluskey and Cass-lyn Welch were captured after a three-week man-hunt that made them two of the most wanted fugitives in America and drew hundreds of false sightings.

U.S. seeks return to Scottish prison of Pan Am bomber

VINEYARD HAVEN, Mass. (AP) — The Obama administration asked Friday that the only per-son convicted for the 1988 bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 be returned to a Scottish prison.

John Brennan, Presi-dent Barack Obama’s counterterrorism advis-er, told reporters accom-

panying the vacationing leader that the U.S. has “expressed our strong conviction” to Scottish officials that Abdel Baset Al-Megrahi (AHB’-dehl BAH’-seht AH’-lee ahl-meh-GRAH’-hee) should not remain free.

The comments came on the first anniversary of Al-Megrahi’s release.

Brennan criticized what he termed the “un-fortunate and inappropri-ate and wrong decision.”

Mortgage-aid effort by Obama is struggling

WASHINGTON (AP) — Nearly half of the 1.3 million homeowners who enrolled in the Obama administration’s flagship mortgage-relief program have fallen out.

The program is intend-ed to help those at risk of

foreclosure by lowering their monthly mortgage payments.

Friday’s report from the Treasury Depart-ment suggests the $75 bil-lion government effort is failing to slow the tide of foreclosures in the United States, economists say.

More than 2.3 million homes have fallen into foreclosure since the re-cession began in Decem-ber 2007, according to foreclosure listing service RealtyTrac Inc.

Economists expect the number of foreclosures to grow well into next year.

“The government pro-gram as currently struc-tured is petering out. It is taking in fewer hom-eowners, more are drop-ping out and fewer people are ending up in perma-nent modifications,” said Mark Zandi, chief econo-mist at Moody’s Analyt-ics.
