Marte (3x4, R, HR, 2 RBI), LF Stefen Romero (2x5, 2B, RBI, SB) and 2B Gabriel Noriega (2x4) combined to record 7 of the Rainiers 12 hits, while also driving in 3 of the team’s 5 runs. Starter Forrest Snow (4.2,6,6,6,2,3,HR) recorded his 3rd loss, allowing 6 runs on 6 hits over 4.2 innings. C John Hicks has hit safely in 16 of 20 games since his promotion to Tacoma, batting .324 (24x74) with 9 runs scored, 2 doubles, 1 triple, 1 home run, 17 RBI, 4 walks and 1 stolen base. Dating back to July 30 with AA Jackson, Marte has hit safely in each of his last 15 games, batting .365 (23x63) with 10 runs scored, 4 doubles, 2 home runs, 8 RBI, 2 walks and 3 stolen bases. RH Todd Coffey is 4-1 with 9 saves and a 2.01 ERA (7 ER, 31.1 IP) in 31 games this season. He has limited opponents to a .200 (23x115) average, while walking 14 and striking out 28. RH Taijuan Walker struck out a career-high 13 batters in 7.0 innings on Aug. 10 vs. Fresno (previous: 12 K on 6/20/13 vs. Mobile w/Jackson). His 13 striketouts with Tacoma were the most by a Rainiers pitcher since Rich Dorman struck out 14 on Aug. 29, 2006 vs. Salt Lake. It was Walker’s 6th career start with at least 10 strikeouts (last: 10 K on 4/9/14 vs. Mississippi w/Jackson). Over his last 2 starts wit Tacoma, he is 2-0 with 1.38 ERA (2 ER, 13.0 IP). During this stretch Walker has limited opponents to a .116 (5x43) average, while walking 4 and striking out 22. MONTERO NAMED PCL PLAYER OF THE MONTH FOR JULY: Minor League Baseball announced today that Tacoma Rainiers first baseman Jesus Montero has been named the Pacific Coast League Player of the Month for July. Montero, 24, led the PCL with 33 RBI and 72 total bases in 27 games with the Rainiers last month. He ranked second in the league in slugging percentage (.692) and extra-base hits (17), and third in total hits with 39. Montero turned in 12 multi-hit games over that stretch, including a season-high 5-for-5, six-RBI performance at Salt Lake on July 4. This season is Montero’s third in the Mariners organization and second with the Rainiers. He was acquired by Seattle along with pitcher Hector Noesi as part of a trade that sent pitchers Michael Pineda and Jose Campos to the New York Yankees on January 20, 2012. Montero was originally signed by the Yankees as a non-drafted free agent in 2006. REHAB ASSIGNMENT: OF Michael Saunders is batting .257 (9x35) with 6 runs scored, 1 double, 2 RBI and 14 walks in 10 rehab starts with Tacoma. Saunders left game vs. Minnesota on July 10 in the middle of an at-bat in the 8th inning with pain in his left side. An MRI later confirmed a diagnosis of a strained left oblique muscle and he was placed on the DL on July 11. Saunders was hitting .276 (54-for-196) with 7 doubles, 3 triples, 6 home runs and 28 RBI in 65 games with Seattle this season. Since May 16, he was hitting .313 (35x112) with 4 doubles, 2 triples, 5 home runs and 21 RBI in 31 games. This is his second disabled list stint of the season; he was on the DL June 12-June 27 with inflammation in his right AC joint. COACHING STAFF: Roy Howell is the 29th manager in Tacoma franchise history. Howell is in his third season coaching in the Mariners organization after two seasons as the hitting coach at Class-A Advanced High Desert. His managerial resume includes 3 seasons at short-season Eugene (2003-05), 3 seasons with San Luis of the California Collegiate League (2007-10) and one season leading the field staff for the Road Warriors of the independent Atlantic League (2011). A former first-round selection by Texas in the 1972 draft, Howell logged time in the PCL as a player with Spokane (1974) and Portland (1985), as well as three seasons as a hitting coach with Portland (2000-02). Pitching coach Jaime Navarro, who is entering his 6th season with the Mariners organization, returns to the Rainiers after spending the last 3 seasons as the Mariners bullpen coach. Cory Snyder, who spent the last 3 seasons with Jackson, will serve as hitting coach. Tom Newberg return to Tacoma as part of the training staff, while Gabe Bourland will be the team’s performance coach.

Peterson hit 2 home runs and drove in 4 runs as Jackson defeated Huntsville 6-2 in game 1 of a doubleheader on Tuesday. Peterson (2x4, 2 R, 2 HR, 4 RBI) recorded his 4th career multi-home run game, but first with Jackson (last: 5/23/14 at Bakersfield w/High Desert). He hit a 1-out, 2-run home run in the 3rd inning and 2-out, 2-run blast in the 4th inning. CF Patrick Kivlehan (2x4, R) recorded the team’s only other multi-hit effort, while RF Jabari Blash (1x3, R, HR, RBI, BB) and LF Daniel Paolini (1x2, RBI, BB) each drove in 1 of the Generals 6 runs. Starter Tyler Olson (5.1,7,2,2,0,4,HR) earned his 8th win of the season, allowing 2 runs on 7 hits over 5.1 innings. RH Trevor Miller (1.2,1,0,0,2,0,WP) picked up his 3rd save of the season, allwong only 1 hits and 2 walks over 1.2 scoreless innings. In the nightcap, DH D.J. Peterson drove in the Generals runs as Jackson lost to Huntsville 1-2 in 8.0 innings. Peterson (2x3, RBI) led the team with 2 hits, while CF Leon Landry (1x3, R, 3B) and 1B Jordy Lara (1x3, 2B) each had 1 of the Generals 4 hits. Starter Moises Hernandez (3.2,3,1,1,0,1) allowed 1 run on 3 hits in 3.2 innings, but did not factor into the decision. LH Kyle Hunter (2.1,1,0,0,1,2) held the Stars scoreless over 2.1 innings, while RH Matt Brazis (1.1,2,1,1,2,2) recorded the loss after allowing a run with only 1 out in the bottom of the 8th inning. OF NOTE: INF D.J. Peterson ranks 3rd among all minor league players wth 102 RBI combined between High Deset and Jackson. He also is tied of the organizational lead wih 28 home runs, while ranking T9th in the minor leagues. After going 3-5 with a 4.56 ERA (36 ER, 71.0 IP) over his first 13 AA starts, Olson is 5-2 with a 2.41 ERA (11 ER, 41.0 IP) over his last 7 starts. LARA NAMED CALIFORNIA LEAGUE PLAYER OF THE MONTH FOR JULY: Minor League Baseball announced that INF Jordy Lara was named California League Player of the Month for July. Lara was promoted to Jackson from Seattle’s California League affiliate the High Desert Mavericks on July 27th. Lara paced the California League with his .434 batting average as well as in extra-base hits (19), on-base percentage (.477) and slugging percentage (.808). His 43 hits, 80 total bases, and 9 home runs were all second best in the league, with his 27 RBIs being third. The first baseman was named the CAL player of the week twice in July and was promoted from the High Desert Mavericks to the Jackson Generals at the end of July. LARA PROMOTED TO AA: INF Jordy Lara was promoted to AA Jackson on July 27. At the time of his promotion, Lara had a 17-game hit streak, batting .479 (34x71) with 21 runs scored, 8 doubles, 8 home runs, 24 RBI and 6 walks. He also hit safely in 24 of his final 26 games, batting .443 (47x107) with 27 runs scored, 11 doubles, 10 home runs, 29 RBI, 10 walks and 1 stolen base. Overall he hit .353 (141x399) with 77 runs scored, 26 doubles, 5 triples, 22 home runs, 80 RBI, 38 walks and 1 stolen base in 102 games with the Mavericks. As of July 28, Lara led the California League in hits (141) and total bases (243), while also ranking 2nd in average (.353), T2nd in RBI (80), 3rd in slugging percentage (.609), T3rd in home runs (22), runs (77) and extra-base hits, T4th in games (102), 6th in on-base percentage (.413) and 8th in doubles. Lara was named California League Player of the week three times: April 21-27, July 14-20 & July 21-27. GENERALS PAY TRIBUNE TO THE LATE TONY GWYNN: The game of baseball not only lost one of its greatest players in June, but one of the best humanitarian’s baseball has ever known. Tony Gwynn, 54, lost his battle with cancer on June 16, 2014 and to honor Gwynn and his entire family the Jackson Generals are wearing special #19 patches on their home pinstripe jerseys. Tony’s Brother Chris, who played 10 seasons in the Major Leagues, is the Seattle Mariners’ Director of Player Development and has been in his current role since 2012. The Generals began wearing the black patch with the white numeral 19 on July 10th (pictured on the jersey of Dario Pizzano). The lefty-swinging Gwynn, nicknamed Mr. Padre, had a career .338 batting average, won eight National League batting titles and played in the Padres’ only two World Series. Gwynn collected 3,141 hits during a Hall of Fame career spanning 20 seasons, all of which spent with San Diego. The Jackson Generals are the Double-A affiliate of the Seattle Mariners and have been affiliated with Seattle since 2007. COACHING STAFF: After managing High Desert in 2013, James Horner will take over as manager of the Mariners affiliate in the Southern League, the Jackson Generals. Horner enters his 8th season with the Mariners (2005-10, 2013-current), but second as manager since returning to the organization prior to last season. Pitching coach Lance Painter returns to Jackson after spending the 2013 season with the High Desert Mavericks. Painter enters his 9th season with the Mariners, including his 4th with Jackson (2010-12). Entering his 4th season with the Mariners organization, Mike Kinkade will serve as the Generals hitting coach. The rest of his staff will include athletic trainer DJ Downie and performance coach Ryan White.

RECAP: The Mavericks scored 7 runs over the first 4 innings and held a 7-4 lead, but allowed 4 runs in the bottom of the 7th inning as High Desert lost to Lancaster 7-8 on Tuesday night. RF Gabby Guerrero (3x5, 2 R, HR, 2 RBI) led the team with 3 hits, while recording his 17th home run of the season with a solo blast to lead off the 3rd inning. 3B Zach Shank (2x5, R, 3 RBI), SS Jack Reinheimer (2x5), C Marcus Littlewood (2x5, R, 2B, RBI) and 2B Tim Lopes (2x4, 2 R, 3B) each recorded 2 of the Maverics 13 hits. Starter Jake Zokan (2.0,4,2,2,1,1,HR) allowed 2 runs on 4 hits in 2.0 innings, but did not factor into the decision. RH Matt Anderson (3.0,1,2,2,2,2) and LH Will Mathis (1.1,4,4,4,1,2,HR) combined to allow 6 runs over 3.0 innings, while RH Andrew Kittredge (1.2,0,0,0,0,1) retired the final 5 batters in order. COACHING STAFF: The Mariners California League affiliate, the High Desert Mavericks, will be managed by Eddie Menchaca, who spent the previous 3 seasons with Clinton. He enters his 6th season in the Mariners organization, including 4 as manager. Menchaca has led his squad to the postseason in each of the last 4 seasons, accumulating a 238-243 (.495) record. Pitching coach Andrew Lorraine enters his 1st season with High Desert after spending the last 2 seasons with Clinton. Hitting coach Max Venable begins his 1st season as coach in the Mariners organization. Venable appeared parts of 12 seasons in the Major Leagues as an outfielder, including stints with the Giants (1979-83), the Expos (1984), the Reds (1985-87), and the Angels (1989-91). Overall he batted .241 (337x1397) with 176 runs scored, 57 doubles, 17 triples, 18 home runs and 128 RBI in 727 career games in the Major Leagues. His son, Will, is currently an outfielder with the San Diego Padres. Tyler Moos begins his 2nd season with Mavericks as trainer and first-year performance coach Cory Ritter round out the Mavericks staff.

MIDWEST LEAGUE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: OF Tyler O’Neill was named Midwest League Player of the Week, Aug. 11-17. O’Neill reached base safely in all 6 games he appeared with hits in 5 games, batting .381 (8x21) with 6 runs scored, 3 doubles, 2 home runs, 8 RBI and 3 walks. He hit a grand slam home run twice during the week (8/14 at Wisconsin and 8/16 vs. Beloit), his only 2 career grand slams. Also his 4 RBI in both the game tied his career-high (also: 8/6/14 vs. Beloit). O’Neill’s 4 hits on Aug. 14 at Wisconsin (4x5, 2 R, GS HR, 4 RBI) also tied his career-high (also: 7/10/13 vs AZL Brewers w/AZL Mariners).
COACHING STAFF: Manager Scott Steinmann returns to lead the LumberKings after a four-year absence from the Midwest League. Steinmann was Clinton’s manager in 2009 and led them to a 69-68 record. He was originally assigned to be the hitting coach with short-A Everett, but was promoted to Clinton after Chris Prieto was named the Mariners Quality Control Coach. Pitching Coach Cibney Bello and Hitting Coach Brent Johnson make their MWL coaching debuts after being teammates on the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers squad in 2005. Bello held the same title with AZL Mariners in 2013 and Johnson was the hitting coach in Pulaski. Geoff Swanson is the Athletic Trainer coming from Pulaski in 2013 and Taylor Nakamura is the performance specialist after being with Everett in 2013.

COACHING STAFF: Dave Valle enters his first season in the Mariners Minor League organization at the helm of the Seattle's affiliate in the Northwest League, the Everett AquaSox. Prior to joining the AquaSox, he spent the last 16 seasons as part of the Mariners broadcast team, including also spending the last 5 seasons as an analyst on the MLB Network's MLB Tonight show. The former catcher spent 9 seasons behind the plate for the Mariners and 21 seasons in professional baseball after originally selected by the Mariners in the second round of the 1978 MLB Draft. Valle played for 4 teams in his 13-year Major League career, including the Mariners (1984-93), Boston (1994), Milwaukee (1994) and Texas (1995-96). He finished with a .237 lifetime batting average, 77 home runs and 350 RBI. Nasusel Cabrera, who also serves as the Latin American Pitching Coordinator, enters his first season with Everett after spending the last four seasons as pitching coach with Pulaski. Andy Bottin and Mike Davis will serve as coaches, while trainer Shane Zdebiak and performance coach Michael Guarino, each enters for their first season in the Mariners organization.

COACHING STAFF: After managing Everett in 2012 and 2013, Rob Mummau takes over as manager of the Mariners affiliate in the Appalachian League, the Pulaski Mariners. Mummau enters his 13th season with the Mariners, including fourth as a manager. He has led his squad to the postseason three times, accumulating a 162-125 (.564) record prior to 2014. Pitching coach Jason Blanton enters his first season with the Mariners after previously working as a pitching coach for USA Baseball on various events. ARIZONA FALL LEAUGE The Arizona Fall League has announced organization and staff (managers, pitching coaches, hitting coaches, athletic trainers) assignments for the 2014 Arizona Fall League season that begins Tuesday, October 7. Regarded throughout professional baseball as the “finishing school” for top prospects since its inception in 1992, the 6-team league features top prospects from every organization in Major League Baseball. The league plays 3 games per day 6 days a week (Monday-Saturday) in 5 Cactus League stadiums. This year, the league adds the new Cubs Park in Mesa as a venue, joining returning sites Camelback Ranch-Glendale, Salt River Fields at Talking Stick, Scottsdale Stadium and Surprise Stadium (two teams). The Major League affiliations for each AFL team are as follows: Surprise Saguaros-Surprise Stadium (Mariners, Red Sox, Reds, Padres and Rangers); Glendale Desert Dogs-Camelback Ranch (Orioles, White Sox, Tigers, Dodgers, Brewers); Peoria Javelinas-Surprise Stadium (Braves, Indians, Royals, Cardinals, Rays); Mesa Solar Sox-Cubs Park (Cubs, Angels, Athletics, Blue Jays, Nationals); Salt River Rafters-Salt River Fields (Diamondbacks, Rockies, Astros, Marlins, Twins) and Scottsdale Scorpions-Scottsdale Stadium (Mets, Yankees, Phillies, Pirates, Giants). MLB FUTURES ALL-STAR GAME Seattle Mariners minor league infielder D.J. Peterson played for the U.S. squad, while outfielder Gabby Guerrero represented the World team in the 16th annual SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game on Sunday, July 13 at Target Field in Minneapolis as part of All-Star weekend. Peterson started at 1B and in the 6th position in the lineup, going 1-for-2 with a double. Guerrero hit 7th as the World team’s starting DH, going 0-for-2 at the plate. The Mariners have had 31 selections to the Futures Game since its first began in 1999. Six players on the current 25-man roster (+DL) played in the Futures Game in the past: Robinson Cano (2003-04), Corey Hart (2002), Felix Hernandez (2004), Logan Morrison (2010), James Paxton (2011) and Michael Saunders (2007). Brad Miller was selected to the 2013 U.S. Team, but was unable to play due to his promotion to the Major League squad. Cano (All-Star: 2006, 2010-13, Futures Game: 2003 & 2004), Hart (All-Star: 2008 & 2010, Futures Game: 2002) and Hernandez (All-Star: 2009, 2011-13; Futures Game: 2004) are each one of 115 players to have competed in both the SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game and the Major League Baseball All-Star Game.
