Overview Purpose:
- To compare SRI with conventional and other
methods (i.e. Rice-duck and Rice-fish farming)
- Villagers can choose which method will be suitable
for their actual situation
Project sites: Bac Son, Nam Son and Dich Giao communes, Tan Lac district, Hoa Binh province (1,380hhds)
Timeframe: Summer–Autumn crop 2007
Villagers tried 3 different spacing (22cmx22cm, 20cmx20cm, 18cmx18cm)

- 8 hhds lost their harvest
- 15 hhds could get 150kg/ha yield
- 5 hhds could get 100kg/ha yield
Because big typhoon hit target area in July and
October…… Villagers could get 3t/ha yield in summer-
autumn crop in 2006……

Advantages
Training by experienced experts and farmers
Good facilitation by commune leaders
Close monitoring by JVC and CDC members
Enthusiasm of villagers
Disadvantages/challenges
Storm and heavy rain swept away rice field of some households and/or reduced yields of rice.
Some villagers transplanted late so that the yield of rice decreased.
Some villagers didn’t transplant paddies with proper density and record the process.
Difficulties in water management
- Location of paddy field
- Prevention of mole crickets and rats
Future planning
About 190 hhds will apply SRI in winter-spring crop of 2008
Promotion of ‘farmer to farmer’ Apply SRI to local variety Distribution of technical materials to interested
villagers Strengthen information sharing among
villagers, local governments and other organizations through workshops and newsletters.
