Want to watch a game on TV? Or maybe a couple? How about 20?

Then you’re in luck, since the 250 Sports Grill opened last week in Oilville.

The new establishment has 18 46” screen TVs on the wall and two 55 inch-ers behind the bar.

“If it’s sports, we’ve got it,” said Manakin-Sabot resident Jeff Ottaviano, co-owner with Chad Hornik. They opened their doors on the first day of the Olympics last week.

No ribbon cutting for them.“We believe in soft openings,” said

Ottaviano. Located at 1390 Broad Street Road,

the 250 Sports Grill will be managed on a day-to-day basis by Dan Ryan, who has worked in the Richmond restaurant market for 20 years.

Ryan is enthusiastic about the busi-ness’s location.

“Forty thousand cars go by Exit 167 each day,” said Ryan of the interchange just a few blocks away from their loca-tion.

The new restaurant can draw from east and west.

“We can draw from Louisa,” said Ottaviano, a former commercial airline pilot who also owns the Wine Loft in Short Pump. Partner Hornik owns the Melting Pot.

The new proprietors are not shy about touting their fare.

“I think most people will find that our food is better than the average sports bar,” said Ottaviano. It includes gatorbites (that’s alligator tail), burgers, wraps, ribs and salads and vegetarian dishes.

The new restaurant will employ about 25 people full or part-time, most drawn from the Goochland area, said Ottaviano.

The 250 Sports Grill will be open seven days a week, from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. They’ll get their signal from Direct TV via satellite, so reception on the big screens is excellent.

And they may not stop at just one. U.S. Route 250 runs all the way to Ohio and plans are already underway to open another outlet.

Other ideas are to run videos of Goochland High School football games at the restaurant on Friday nights, if that can be arranged.

And with access to the field adjacent Ottaviano, to the strip mall, they hope

to hold tailgate parties for big events like the annual U.Va. - Va. Tech football game.

To find out more about the new grill, go to their web site at www.250sportsgrill.com.

Goochland County elemen-tary students will return to school at the end of this sum-mer with a sense of ownership and pride.

They will see completed works by their school’s Artist in Residence displayed. The art work will be a reminder of the interaction between the students and three local artists who gave of their time to show students how the visual arts are a part of their daily life.

On Jan. 27, 2012, the three ele-mentary schools announced an Elementary “Artists in Residence” Program. The program was conceived by Dr. Stephen Geyer, Assistant Superintendent for Instruction, Goochland County Public Schools.

Through the collabora-tion and efforts of many, the schools were pleased to wel-come three professional artists into their learning communi-ties. Each artist found a home in the elementary schools as they created pieces of art that will remain an enduring centerpiece at Byrd Elementary, Goochland Elementary, and Randolph Elementary.

The program worked paral-lel to the instructional schedule in order to provide the students with opportunities to interact with the artist, appreciate his/her craft, and reinforce the fine arts as an integral part of a well rounded educational experi-ence.

Byrd Elementary hosted Clinton Helms. Helms is retired from the U.S. Army, a profes-sional painter/illustrator, and an adjunct instructor in the fine arts programs at both Virginia Commonwealth University and Virginia State University. He chose to create two large acrylic paintings depicting a visual his-tory of Virginia.

The students were amazed by his work and Helms enjoyed

telling them how he began to paint when he was in elemen-tary school. He always admired the work of famous illustrators, Norman Rockwell and N.C. Wyeth.

Goochland Elementary wel-comed. Blane Cope. Cope is the business owner of Art a la Carte, a professional silhouette artist, and a former art teacher in the public schools. Cope empha-sized her craft as the perfect career for a stay at home mom. She taught the children to rec-ognize positive/negative space and about the history of the art of silhouette. Cope’s final proj-ect was a large silhouette collage titled, “The Life and Times of Goochland Elementary School-2012”.

Finally, Randolph Elementary played host to Hunter Webb, a professional wood craftsman and owner of The Clearfield Company, Inc. He also hap-pens to be the proud father of two Randolph Elementary Roadrunners. Webb took every opportunity to relate his work to the Math and Science SOLs such as how simple tools are used and how to take measurements.

He was very happy to share his love of making a wooden bench from a walnut board. The completed bench will become part of the newly designed courtyard at RES.

It was heart warming to wit-ness the interaction between the artists and the children. Retired art teacher Sandra Barkley assisted Helms and Cope at BES and GES. Cindy Edmonds and Annelise Ware, art teachers at RES, were able to assist Webb during their regularly scheduled art classes.

All three artists are residents of Goochland County and were pleased and honored to have been given the opportunity to share their talents with the elementary school children in their communities.

The GCPS Elementary

“Artists in Residence” Program was featured in the May 2012 issue of Richmond Magazine: Go West section titled “The Art of Learning.”

The three artists were hon-

ored at the July 10 Goochland County School Board meet-ing.

lowed by two years at the Hanover County School Board office as the coor-dinator of gifted programs.

But working at an elementary school was where her heart was, Crowder said, “and I just missed being in an elementa-ry school so bad and decided to become a principal.”

Randolph has an enrollment of about 400 pupils in grades K through 5, Crowder said. She oversees a staff of 45, not including cafeteria workers, custodi-ans and school bus drivers. Her annual salary is $72,080.

A native of Mecklenburg County, Crowder said helping her younger sister Pamela with schoolwork inspired her to pursue a career in education.

“I fought the teaching urge, but final-ly it got me and I decided to go into teaching because I just loved working with her – teaching her to read, doing all those things,” Crowder said.

Crowder earned an undergraduate degree in early childhood education from James Madison University and a master’s degree in gifted education from the College of William and Mary. She has an endorsement in administration from the University of Virginia.

Crowder lives in Mechanicsville with her husband Michael and their two chil-dren, Caroline, 16, and Eric, 13.

School starts in Goochland on Aug.

20 and Crowder said she has been busy getting ready.

“I’m looking forward to getting into the classrooms and helping teachers with professional development, working directly with the kids as well – doing some reading with them, doing some science lessons, those types of things,” Crowder said.

The Roadrunner Round-up is one project Crowder has been working on. The Roadrunner is the school’s mascot and Crowder said the school will have a year-long western theme where teach-ers of the week will earn the title of “Randolph’s Most Wanted.”

Crowder said she has been meet-ing with teachers individually and she’s learned that Goochland is a close-knit community and that Randolph “is so family-oriented.”

“I think that’s going to make things different and very exciting,” she said. “I think my primary role is education-al leadership, helping the teachers to become better teachers and helping kids learn. It just comes down to that. But primarily, keeping kids safe. I think we’ve got to keep kids safe, make them feel loved and then all the learning can hap-pen after that.”

Crowder said her short-term goal as principal “is to make sure the kids are engaged” and her long-term goal is to instill in pupils “all those things that really make you a good citizen rather than just learning rote information.”

Serving as a principal may be her final role in education, Crowder said.

“I think so,” she said. “I think a prin-cipal is where I’m going to stay and I’ve loved what I’ve seen in Goochland and I don’t have any plans to leave.”

Couple apprehended in Hadensville stabbing, shooting incident

By Ken [email protected]

A man and woman wanted in a Saturday morning stab-bing and shooting incident in western Goochland have been apprehended by a Goochland deputy.

Goochland Sheriff James L. Agnew said Sunday that “Ricky Darnell Ramey and his com-panion, Charlotte H. Hodges have been placed into custody and are awaiting transfer to the Sheriff’s Office in Goochland

where they will appear via video before a magistrate.”

Ramey is alleged to have stabbed Bruce Englehart after an argument in a home on Hadensville-Fife road, accord-ing to a call received from a friend of the victim early Saturday morning. Charlotte H. Hodges fired a handgun during the incident, said the caller.

The deputy spotted the 1995 Ford Explorer the couple were reported driving and stopped it in the 5000 block of Broad Street Road, said Agnew. Hodges Ramey

would set a precedent for other neighborhoods. “If our neigh-borhood is allowed to be bro-ken apart it would send a mes-sage to other neighborhoods,” she said.

At a July 12 meeting with Bellview Gardens residents, General Land Commercial Real Estate Company rep-resentative Tom Kinter described the proffers that are being offered with the rezon-ing, which would prohibit any use allowed in B-2 zoning other than professional office buildings and financial insti-tutions.

Much of the discussion centered on Bellview Gardens residents’ concern over the additional traffic that Mills Road would bear if the project were approved. According to a transcript of the meeting, resi-dents asked why an entrance and exit onto Broad Street Road was not provided for.

Other residents expressed concern that the project would lead to development of property northwest of Bellview Gardens that would also be accessed by way of Mills Road.

Kinter said that VDOT requirements for an entrance could not be met with the frontage available on Broad Street.

“I appreciate everybody coming and listening to what we had to present,” said Kinter after the meeting.

District 4 supervisor Bob Minnick said after the meet-ing that there was “more meat on the bone” of the presenta-tion than at the first meeting, held in April.

Minnick called the second

meeting “less heated than the first,” and said he is “willing to entertain the notion and have it wind its way through the process until it appears before the board. I’m all ears,” said Minnick.

Deputy County Administrator Dan Schardein said his staff is meeting with Kinter this week to work out some details in the appli-cation, which he expect-ed would be heard by the planning commission at its September meeting.

Goochland County Animal Control needs resi-dents’ help in locating two brindle colored bull mastiff dogs, believed to have killed two donkeys and a cat in the Manakin area.

The donkeys were killed on a farm in the area in January. The cat was killed on the same property this week.

Animal Control Supervisor

Corky Marks said Thursday that his staff has been looking for the two dogs after trying to trap them unsuccessfully.

Marks said Animal Control Officer Tim Clough has seen the dogs, which can average about 150 lbs.

“We’re down there every day looking for them,” said Marks.

Anyone with information about the two dogs should contact Animal Control at (804) 556-5302.

Superintendent interviews to begin By Ken Odor

Goochland could have a new super-intendent of schools by Sept. 1, if every-thing goes smoothly during the inter-view process.

School board members expect to get a list of six to eight candidates from the consulting firm BWP and Associates on July 31. More than 40 applications have been received for the position.

At last week’s school board meeting, members scheduled initial interviews for Aug. 20 and 25, with plans to inter-view two to three finalists on Aug. 28.

“We hope to announce the new super-intendent by the first of September,”

said School Board Chairwoman Beth Hardy Monday.

In other business, the board heard a presentation from Bruce Ventner and Goochland Historical Society President Phyllis Silber on a planned re-enact-ment of Dahlgren’s Raid during the Civil War, when Union cavalrymen swept through the county on their way to Richmond.

Plans call for a recreation of the raid on Sept. 29-30 when more than 100 riders will pass through Goochland, following the path taken by the 1864 raid.

A mock battle will be staged at Tuckahoe Plantation on Sept. 30.

The board also discussed the

Goochland High School Parking fee, currently set at $75.

District 1 member Mike Payne said he was opposed to using the parking fee to pay the parking lot attendant’s salary.

Hardy agreed, saying cost should be including in the budget as an operating expense.

The board adopted a new fee schedule for the upcoming year. Instructional fees were reduced from $20 to $10 at all levels, and several fees, were eliminated includ-ing the elementary Weekly Reader fee ($5), the middle school Exploratory fee ($8) while three $10 fees (Art, Graphic Art, technology Class) were consoli-dated into one $10 Graphic Art fee.

Neighborhood resident opposes project

We have all seen such positive changes hap-pening all of over Goochland, changes in our schools that make us smile daily, changes on the board of supervisors that help us breathe again and an overall feeling that we as a commu-nity have spoken our piece and seen that change starts with each of us.

However, as a resident of Bellview Gardens it does feel a little like the more things change the more they stay the same. The residents

In recent weeks we have been paying more attention to new businesses opening in Goochland County, visiting them either before or after their grand openings or ribbon cuttings.

I’m always impressed at what sometimes seems to be the fundamental difference in mind set of these folks who plunge into the world of uncertainty that accompanies the creation of a new commercial venture. They take risks that most of us choose not to, in hopes of creating a livelihood for themselves and their employees and perhaps achieving success, and yes, potentially sub-stantial wealth if things go well.

Most of the rest of us would rather have a job.I dipped a toe into the small business world many years ago, when I

opened a photography business as a sideline to my full-time job. The experi-ence was sobering. Permits, record-keeping and the like required by govern-ment at all levels made the experience a, as they call it these days, “teachable moment.”

What it taught me was that I didn’t have the temperament to run a small business full-time.

What it taught me was that just having an interest and hopefully some skill in an area was not enough to achieve success.

What it taught me was that one has to have drive, ambition, energy and determination to make a go of it in small business, more of all of these things than I had.

I sputtered along for a number of years and finally closed the business when I no longer had enough energy for both it and my job.

But most small business owners don’t have the luxury I had. They may have sunk their life savings into the project. If they fail, bankruptcy may be the result.

Or, they may be successful, enjoying the results of their hard work while providing jobs and economic benefit to their communities and tax revenue to local, state and federal governments.

Do they make it on their own? Well, let’s figure it out. Those people didn’t spring out of nowhere. Their background helped prepare them for the chal-lenge of creating a business. Their families helped, their schooling may have helped, and an adequate road network, for example, may have helped custom-ers reach them or allowed them to distribute their products.

Of course that education and infrastructure was paid for how? You guessed it, by taxes ultimately generated by business activity.

Politicians and government officials at all levels need to understand these facts. Here in Goochland, I believe they do.

In Washington, I’m not so sure.

have spent their summers in meetings with General Land, who want to change the comprehensive plan again and turn the first four lots of Bellview into a B-2 zoning for an office park.

This office complex would include 19,000 square feet of office space and 90 park-ing spaces with one single entrance and exit off of Mills Road on lots currently zoned for residential purposes only. It is a 2.75 million dollar plan for which General Land has no funding. So I have to ask myself, when does this end?

We have had a similar proposal from Goodwill last year and now they will open their new store in a logical location on Matthews Lane. The real problem seems to

be no one wants to use the existing commercial real estate that makes up most of Broad Street Road, they would rather attempt to save a couple of bucks by attempting to rezone resi-dential land. So where is the consideration for the resi-dents of this subdivision? We have now spent a year and half of our lives explaining that this is our neighbor-hood and that the road they want to use is the one and only entrance to our neigh-borhood with homes facing and directly beside this land they want to develop.

I am asking the residents of this community to drive into Bellview Gardens. Take a look inside our neighbor-hood. Look and see where they are attempting to rezone. Then help us have Planning and Zoning send a clear cut message to devel-opers. We want develop-ment in Goochland but not inside our neighborhoods. I am asking this commu-nity to help the residents of Bellview Gardens move on with our lives. The burden that this has put on us for the

last year and half is unfair and burdensome. We have bought our homes, paid our taxes including the Tuckahoe Creek Service District tax and yet here we are again and again.

The message is simple, commercial development belongs on commercial land and we have plenty around us. Just stay out of our front yards.

The public hearing for this application is Sept. 20 at Planning and Zoning.

Who is Eric Cantor working for?

Eric Cantor throws a heck of a barbeque. He has also represented us for a good while now. When word came out that he had made investments that made him money if the US economy got worse, I didn’t like it, but it was a small portion of his investments and as he said, rich people always play both sides of a bet. So we kept him as our guy.

Letterscontinued from > page 6

Email us your news at [email protected]

Now it comes out that Eric Cantor is getting five million dollars of campaign funding for his Young Gun Super Pac from Chinese gambling money. The donor, Sheldon Adelson, is currently under investigation for brib-ing Chinese officials to make sure his casino deals went the right way.

There’s an old saying: Speech is free but getting a politician to listen gets expensive. For five million dollars I bet Eric Cantor is all ears. I don’t want to tell anyone how to vote but maybe this new guy Wayne Powell deserves a good look. He’s got a long military background and isn’t play-ing with Chinese gambling money. I’m willing to bet Powell can throw a good bar-beque too.

Thank you for support of STEM

The overwhelming sup-port for the first STEM Engineering Summer Camp, from Goochland School Board, Goochland Public Schools, Rotary Club of Goochland, Richmond Strikers, Science Museum of Virginia (SMV), volunteers, and contributors was hum-bling, gratifying, and very much appreciated.

Thanks to the Goochland Gazette for the excellent journalistic coverage of the Camp, especially the rocket launch. The unique oppor-tunity to be the only group, among a world audience, to be able to communicate

with lead NASA Scientist Dr. Mark Patterson, with the Aquarius, as he explained his research of the coral reef, from 60 feet at the bottom of the ocean off the coast of Florida, through a “live’ link, not only it placed Goochland on the world map, but it underscored the importance the SMV places on reach-ing out to the educational community, particularly in Goochland. Building on this relationship and strengthen-ing it, yields immeasurable benefits to the students in expanding their horizons, and enriches the experience of SMV officials, as they define their mission in the communities.

On behalf of all those who were directly involved with planning and executing this premier STEM camp, I extend a warm and heartfelt thank you to all the stu-dents and their parents, hop-ing that they felt this pilot program was worth their efforts. Last but not least, a special thank you goes to the teachers and volunteers without whom this project would have never seen the light of day.

We have much to learn from this year’s experiment, and we hope that we get a chance to serve the edu-cational needs of our stu-dent population again, more extensively, in the coming year and beyond.

There is still an opportu-nity for those who want to contribute to defray some of the cost of this year’s STEM Camp. A check can be made to Goochland Public schools and sent to STEM Engineering Summer Camp, c/o Mrs. Tina McCay, Principal, Goochland Elementary School, 3150 River Road West, Goochland, Virginia 23063.

This weekend, the annual Virginia Sales Tax Holiday will help parents save money while making back-to-school pur-chases.

Friday through Sunday, Aug. 3-5, Virginia state sales tax will be waived on articles of cloth-ing priced $100 or less and on school supplies priced at $20 or less. Here are a few tips to help moms and dads to maximize the forthcoming Virginia Sales Tax holiday:

1. Make a list of the items that you’ll need before heading out to shop.

Elementary and middle schools sometimes provide lists

of school supplies that students will need for certain subjects, so that’s a great place to start. Or, sit down with children and talk about the kinds of items that they used last year because, chances are, they will need many of the same things.

2. Take advantage of deals that include multiple items. Students need supplies such as notebooks, folders, paper and pencils throughout the year, so those items are often no-brain-ers when it comes to offers where you can save more by buying large quantities.

3. Check out store clearance sections. Retailers clear out cur-rent stock to make room for new offerings, so buying last season’s items before they’re

gone is a worthwhile way to save a few bucks.

4. Look for other offers that stores have planned to take advantage of the buying frenzy. That is, since retailers know that parents will already be on hand throughout the weekend to cash in on the sales holiday, they often put other items on sale to help clear out old stock.

By following those instruc-tions, you’ll be able to make the most of the weekend shopping experience.

The Virginia State Tax Holiday will be offered Friday through Sunday, Aug. 3-5.

For more information about items that will qualify for waived sales tax, visit www.tax.virginia.gov.

While most of us try to avoid prison, the Reverend Vera Rhyne is always trying to get inside one.

Women’s, men’s, maximum security, minimum security – Rhyne’s been in plenty, includ-ing California’s notorious San Quentin, where Charles Manson was once housed, and where, years ago, she would make hour-long weekly drives from Sacramento, where she was liv-ing at the time, to minister to just one prisoner, a man alleg-edly known by other inmates as “the Rock” because he was so hardened.

Rhyne is the type of per-son who doesn’t just enjoy a challenge; she seems to leap at one head on. While she enjoys preaching in a church – as she does every Sunday at the First Antioch Baptist Church on Maidens Road – she calls pris-on ministry “where the rubber meets the road of your faith.” In 2004, she became the chap-lain at the now defunct James River Correctional Center in Goochland and is currently chaplain at the Goochland’s James River Work Center and co-chaplain at Powhatan’s Deep Meadow.

Rhyne seems to take a spe-cial pleasure in believing in a person who no one has ever believed in, in reaching a person others have thought unreach-able, and in loving those who have never been loved.

Growing up in Jacksonville, North Carolina, Rhyne had a father who didn’t believe in God, and a mother who wasn’t always diligent about attend-ing church. On those Sundays when her mother would stay home, Rhyne would go by her-self, walking more than a mile to attend services, often bring-

ing her younger brother along with her.

“I can’t explain it any other way,” Rhyne says of her faith. “It was everything to me.”

In 1974, while still just a stu-dent at Raleigh’s Shaw University, Rhyne became ordained. After graduation she joined the Army, serving in several overseas loca-tions including Kuwait, Iraq, and Korea. Whenever she could find an opportunity to preach, she preached, and whenever she could visit a prison, she visited, attempting to win over hearts, minds and souls. She’s worked with the homeless, preached on various radio stations, and gone on motivational speaking tours.

While in her everyday actions Rhyne comes off as somewhat quiet and reserved, behind the pulpit she is intense, passionate and charismatic. During ser-vice she claps, dances, and sings along with the choir. When she preaches she seems to preach with her whole body, and her sermons, while fiery, focus more on love than condemnation.

“I don’t come to the house of the Lord to have a sad time,” she proclaimed one recent Sunday. “I come to have a good time!”

On this day the theme of her sermon was “evaluating a pastor.” She picked the topic in remembrance of First Antioch’s former pastor Ralph Harris, who died from cancer before Rhyne took over last August.

“A pastor,” she proclaimed ,“should have the strength of an ox; the stubbornness of a bulldog; the wisdom of an owl; the harmlessness of a dove; the vision of an eagle; the hide of a rhino; the endurance of a camel; the bounce of a kanga-roo; the disposition of an angel . . . . and the sense to know that you cannot please everyone.”

Several members of Rhyne’s former church in Richmond – Broad Rock Baptist – were in

attendance that day, just to hear her speak.

“Her sermons are always just so interesting, informative and so well-planned,” said Pearl Branch, who had made the trip out from the city that day with her husband, Morris.

In her prison work, Rhyne is not afraid to think outside the box. At the James River Work Center she started up a speech and debate club, the first of its kind in the state, in which prisoners are given the chance to hone their public speaking skills. As part of the club, local politicians and other prominent people are invited to participate in live, structured debates with prisoners.

Another program Rhyne started at James River, with the help of the assistant warden, is the Suit Program. Rhyne’s goal is for every man who requests a suit to get one, so that when he walks through the prison gates on the day of his release he’ll be “wearing the clothes of a free man.” Though much of her work is in the spiritual realm, Rhyne is also a realist and she doesn’t discount the importance of appearances. She says much of the benefit of

a suit is psychological, helping to boost the men’s self-esteem and confidence.

Since the inception of the program last November, Rhyne’s clothes closet – which is furnished through donations – has suited up more than twenty men. In her office, among her large collection of religious art, greeting cards and inspiration phrases is a corkboard filled with snapshots of her shaking the hands of these men as the leave the prison, wearing their new (used) suits.

“I had no idea it was going to have such a great impact upon the guys who are being released and the guys who are going to be released.”

“The first impression is a lasting impression,” Rhyne says. “And now their first impression will be as free men.”

If you would like to make

a donation of gently used men’s dress clothing – includ-ing shoes, ties, suit jackets and pants, and collared dress shirts – to the suit program at James River Work Center, please con-tact Chaplain Vera Rhyne at 804-306-7159.

For pastor, prison work is ‘where the rubber meets the road’

High expectations, a deter-mined will, great community and parental support along with a dedicated group of players and coaches carried the Rockville 10-year-old Cal Ripken All-Stars to unimagi-nable heights this summer.

After capturing a Virginia title, the team headed to North Carolina for the Southeast Regional Tournament, but despite a winning record in pool play, Rockville didn’t make the cut.

The four pool teams com-piled a 2-1 record so officials resorted to a tie-break system and Rockville allowed more runs than Reynolds/Fairview, N.C. and Eagle Lake, Fla.

“Sure we were disappointed to not advance to the champi-onship bracket,” said Manager Charlie Domalik. “But the bright side is that for the first time ever a Rockville Baseball All-Star team advanced to the Southeast Regional Tournament and rep-resented Rockville and Virginia very well. We played against the top teams in the Southeastern U.S. and came home with a winning record and a ton of great memories.”

Rockville opened against Florida and didn’t waste any time getting the bats heated up. Hunter Milligan led off with a single and Scotty Sweeney reached on a fielder’s choice.

Ben Knouse doubled, Sweeney scored and Rockville was off to the races.

Knouse had a steady ride on the mound and Wyatt Stanley provided two innings of top-notch relief to ensure the 9-1 victory.

“We talked to the boys as we were preparing for this tour-nament about wanting to take it game-by-game and not look ahead,” Domalik said. “What we

Submitted by Jed KingLast week the Goochland

Majors 11-12-year-old All-Stars won the Virginia Dixie State Championship in South Hill to earn an invitation to the Dixie World Series in Bartow, Fla. starting Aug. 4.

Two weeks ago at the District Tournament in Amelia, Goochland rolled through four games to win the title for the third consecutive year.

Goochland opened with a 9-2 win over Powhatan then picked up back-to-back wins over Amelia, 12-2, and 4-0. Goochland then rolled to a 23-3 victory in the final against Buckingham.

The team racked up 12 home runs: John John King (3), Tyler Ott (3), Zac Harlow (2), and one each by Cole Ragone, Payton Harrigal, Hunter Proffitt, and Danny Kane.

The team also got strong pitching from Ott, Harrigal, King, Wyatt Murray, and Dylan Scruggs. The defense had key plays from Austin Dehner, Scruggs, and Gunnar Fanko – including four double plays for King, Franko, and Harlow.

Goochland went 5-0 in the state tournament but it was a battle from the start.

Quality pitching from Harrigal, King, Murray, and Ott kept the pressure on the other teams and solid infielding by Franko and Harlow accounted for six double plays.

Goochland hit four homers; King, Proffitt, Harlow (a grand slam), and a key home run by Harrigal in extra innings of the championship game to seal the win.

Outfielders Ragone, Ott, Kane, Proffitt, and Dehner had a total of nine assists including two key outs at home.

Coach Greg Harlow attri-butes much of the teams’ defen-sive success to veteran catcher

saw from the boys was a fan-tastic effort against one of the tournament’s strongest teams.”

Things didn’t go as smooth-ly against North Carolina. Rockville trailed 11-0 before they pushed across a run but they eventually lost.

“That is baseball,” Domalik said. “Sometimes you hit the ball right at the other team and they hit it where you aren’t -- that happened to us today. We didn’t play badly - we just got beat by a team that played bet-ter than we did today.”

Playing their second game of the day, Rockville showed no hangover and bombarded Putnam County, Tenn. with four consecutive singles to score twice in the first inning.

Tennessee fought back for a 6-4 lead after three but Rockville tied the score in the fourth when Knouse hit a sig-nature double.

Tennessee answered with a run in the bottom of the inning but again Rockville responded with two runs in the fifth. Jack Vaughan and Stanley singled then Link Hammerschimdt and Milligan each earned RBIs with groundouts when Vaughan and Stanley scored for an 8-7 lead.

Sweeney got the start and

Stanley worked well in relief to send the game in to extra innings tied at eight.

Rockville exploded for seven runs in the top of the seventh for a 15-8 lead going on to win 15-9.

“What a game,” exclaimed Domalik. “Throughout this entire All-Star season this group of boys didn’t know the word quit - it just isn’t part of their vocabulary.”

The post-season journey was a great experience for fans, coaches, family and players, and the team provided its coach with a level of pride in their accomplishments.

“I am so proud of what these boys have accomplished,” Domalik said. “Every one of them contributed throughout the tournament and they have built experiences and memo-ries that will live with them forever.’

Domalik won’t soon for-get the summer of 2012 and a determined group of 10-year olds who would not quit. “This is a special group of young men - it was fun to see them meeting other kids and rooting them on -- it was just a fantastic experience all the way around.”

Rockville wraps up memorable summer

Goochland Majors take Dixie title again

By Jim RidolphiSpecial Correspondent

Stephen Roberts, who is a leader of the defense.

The tournament finals came down to a nine-inning barn burner between Goochland and the Dinwiddie National squad. Goochland broke open a score-less game in the top of the fifth when Zac Harlow was walked, moved to second on a hit by Franko, and then stole third and home on passed balls.

Dinwiddie tied the game 1-1 in the top of the sixth.

Harrigal pitched well before being relieved by King in the sev-enth. King came to the mound with one man on and facing the heart of the Dinwiddie line-up but shut them down without allowing a run.

Dinwiddie scored one in the top of the eighth and Goochland answered in the bottom of the inning when Ott scored on a single by Ragone.

Murray pitched the top of the ninth and battled to hold Dinwiddie to two runs but Goochland rallied in the bot-tom of the inning. Franko drew a walk and Harrigal drove a two-strike pitch over the left field fence to tie the game 4-4.

Stephen Roberts then drew a walk, stole second and scored when Proffitt nailed a line drive

to the right field fence to secure the win for Goochland 5-4.

Many Dixie officials at the game stated it was the best championship game they had ever seen – a great game by both teams.

Coach Harlow with assis-tants Jed King and Derek Murray, now head to Bartow, Fla. “It is a pleasure to coach this group of players, they play as a team, and they are looking forward to being in the Dixie World Series for the second time in three years,” Harlow said. “In Bartow, win or lose, these boys are champions and they will always remember this experience. The character of our team is heart and hustle – if we practice hard and always give 100 percent, we can accept the out-come, win or lose”.

The Dixie World Series games can be followed on the internet at www.jockjive.com, and the team is busy raising funds to help get them there. Goochland’s open-ing opponent will be Louisiana with a game time of 3:30 p.m. Donations can be made at www.gofundme.com/goochlandall-stars or mailed to the Goochland Youth Athletic Association, P.O. TAURUS - Apr 21/May 21It could take a lot to raise your ire this week, Taurus. However, if your mood is already set to simmer, you may have a full-blown boiling over at the slightest taunt.

GEMINI - May 22/Jun 21It is easy to bury something and ig-nore it, Gemini, but it’s not always easy to face a problem head-on. Make an eff ort to fi gure out issues that keep recurring in your life.

CANCER - Jun 22/Jul 22Take a few moments to focus on your future, Cancer, rather than just what needs to be done in the pres-ent. Open your mind to real long-term goals.

LEO - Jul 23/Aug 23Arguments can quickly turn stress-ful, Leo. So try your best to avoid any confrontations this week and your body will thank you. Unresolved is-sues could pop up.

VIRGO - Aug 24/Sept 22You are overly focused on the min-ute details of the things you do, Vir-go. But somehow the bigger picture has escaped your perusal lately. Remedy that this week.

LIBRA - Sept 23/Oct 23Your curiosity could get the best of you this week, Libra. You may end up delving into things that are better left unturned. Take a step back and fi nd a new focus.

SCORPIO - Oct 24/Nov 22Don’t set yourself up for frustration, Scorpio. Avoid any people who cause you confl ict and any activities that bring you grief. Enjoy yourself instead.

SAGITTARIUS - Nov 23/Dec 21Sagittarius, although you didn’t think things could get much busier, this week you will fi nd more on your plate. Don’t be overly concerned. There will be time to get things done.

CAPRICORN - Dec 22/Jan 20More enjoyable things are on the horizon, Capricorn, and you could fi nd yourself distracted by so many enjoyable activities. Try to schedule one per week.

AQUARIUS - Jan 21/Feb 18No one can solve your confl icts bet-ter than you, Aquarius. Although your options seem to be a little sti-fl ed as of late, you’ll fi nd the way to impart changes.

PISCES - Feb 19/Mar 20The planets are giving you the cos-mic go-ahead to get things done, Pisces. So don’t delay your actions any longer.
