Weekend tragedyBy Isabel Venter

No words can describe the sorrow in parents’ hearts after witnessing the death of one of their children.

The Haque family of Louis Trichardt has been beyond all consolation since an outing to the Kru-ger National Park (KNP) this past Saturday turned into tragedy and their youngest child drowned.

The utter heartbreak and sorrow are tangible in the house of the eight-year-old Rehanul Haque, or Rehan as he was affectionately known. “Come and see my baba … my beautiful boy … he was my angel child,” weeps Rehan’s mother, Shahida.

The Zoutpansberger visited the grieving family on Monday, during which time Shahida tenderly shared memories and photos of her darling child. Every nook and cranny of the family house display a photo or achievement, not only of Rehan, but also of his older sister, Norin. “He had such a big heart, you know … always smiling and playing,” says Norin, while she consoles her grieving mother.

How Rehan had ended up in the deep end of the pool at the Shingwedzi rest camp of the KNP remains a mystery to both his parents.

Shortly before tragedy struck, the Haque family had spent time watching animals together with other family members in the KNP. They were three families, says Rehan’s father, Razaul. “We saw many animals – elephants, antelope, and buffaloes – Rehan was so excited to come home and show all his school friends the photos we had taken,” interjects his mother.

The family decided to stay the night, as it was getting dark and they were informed that they would not make it in time before the park’s gate

closed for the night. After paying for their accom-modation at Shingwedzi, said Razaul, the whole family decided to escape the scorching sun by going for a swim before dinner.

Rehan was playing in the shallow end of the pool, while his sister, mother and other family members were either swimming or relaxing at the opposite, much deeper, side of the pool. Rehan, however, wanted to go swimming with his daddy.

Razaul was hesitant, because Rehan could not swim yet, so he decided to come closer to the shallow side. He held on to Rehan’s arms, so he could “swim” in the deep side. They did not go far beyond the shallow end of the pool, and they planned together to ask mom Shahida to arrange for Rehan to go for swimming lessons.

When it was time to prepare dinner, the family started to gather their things and set out for their chalets. Razaul took Rehan back to the shallow end, to were the steps were, so he could climb out and gather his clothes. Razaul turned back and got out at the

deep end, so he could get his own clothes. He then started off after the other family members who were already some distance from the pool, on their way to the chalets.

Razaul was only a few short paces from the pool when he enquired whether Rehan was with his mother. The nearest family members said that he must be either with his mother, or perhaps in the bathroom; they were not completely sure.

“Then a shock went through me; only a few minutes had passed … something was wrong … I turned back and ran towards the pool … I saw Rehan’s shoes next to the pool … and then I saw something blue under the water … the navy blue swimming costume of Rehan … (Contd on P2) The eightyearold Rehanul Haque the boy with the big heart. (Contd from P1)“... and I just jumped in with-

out thinking,” says Razaul.Rehan was unconscious when

his dad brought him to the sur-face.

Razaul immediately tried to re suscitate Rehan. Other guests at the camp rushed over to assist him and started to do CPR on Rehan. “He coughed up water, and I put my mouth on his mouth to get him breathing … other people tried … they tried over and over again … but nothing,” says Razaul before his emotions overcome him.

Sadly, Rehan never regained consciousness.

For the next three hours, guests took turns to try and get a pulse. When an ambulance from Mala-mulele arrived on the scene, Re-han was declared dead. “They put

a defibrillator on his chest, but his chest only went up and then back down again,” says Razaul.

“…the people … all the people who came to help … they all cried with us,” adds Shahida. “My baba looked like he was sleeping … his face was so peaceful.”

Afterwards, park employees assisted the family to bring Re-han’s body back home to Louis Trichardt, and he was buried on Sunday.

Friends and family of Rehan’s were devastated by the news of the little boy who was always smiling and friendly with his fellowman. According to his parents, Rehan had a playful spirit and was never sad for too long. “He used to play with me when I returned home late from work, well past his bedtime,”

says Razaul.Rehan also loved to play with

his two cats, who now also mourn his death and refuse to eat. He also had many playmates and was a promising student of the Eltivillas Primary School, where he was a Grade 2 pupil. “He was a very obedient, well-educated child and academically a strong student. He maintained an aver-age of 85% in all of his subjects,” said the school’s principal, Mr Johan Fick.

In the meantime, the spokes-person for the KNP, Mr William Mabasa, expressed the heartfelt condolences of the park’s man-agement to the Haque family. He further added that the swimming pool at the Shingwedzi camp was for the use of visitors, but at their own risk.

Volgens Johann se vrou, Melinda, is Johann vroeg Woensdagoggend by hul huis in Klein-mond oorlede.

Family’s weekend break-away to Kruger Park turns into tragedy

By Kaizer Nengovhela

A wellknown traffic officer at the Makhado Municipality, Mr Abraham Makganyoga (52), passed away in the Polokwane MediClinic after a short illness on Sunday.

He was described by his col-leagues as a hardworking, ded-icated, loving and respectful traffic officer. The mayor, Cllr David Mutavhatsindi, expressed his condolences to the family and said that the municipality would

sorely miss his contribution to service delivery in the province.

He was appointed as traffic officer in 1997.

Mr Makganyoga’s daughter, Evah, said that she would remem-ber her father as a loving person who was always smiling. “He was a wonderful gift to the fam-ily,” she said. He is survived by his wife and two children. He will be buried tomorrow (Saturday) at the Ramahantsha graveyard. The service will be held at Tshiozwi at 06:00.

The Soutpansberg is renowned for its diverse plant life and one might have thought that there is not much left to research, but the efforts of two local researchers are set to put the region on the map once again with regard to a species that has gone almost unnoticed for years.

Tuba and Retha van der Walt are spearheading the Fungi & Lichen Project, a survey and private research initiative to address the gap in knowledge regarding the biodiversity of these species in the Limpopo Valley. “Due to the harsh, dry climate and sporadic rainfall of the area north of the Sout-pansberg, these species are still largely unexplored and research on the topic has never been undertaken before,” says Retha.

The ultimate aim of the project is the publication of a second area-specific field guide, following the publication of Retha’s Wild Flowers of the Limpo-po valley in 2009. “Since the start of the project five years ago, the species list has grown exponentially. More than 800 specimens have been collected and this could increase even more before the initiative draws to a close,” says Retha.

The survey findings far exceeded Tube and Retha’s expectations and to date approximately 180 different fungi, lichen and slime mould species have been re-corded in the study area, which includes the Mapun-gubwe National Park and World Heritage Site.

During the survey, fully annotated specimens are col-lected and spore prints are prepared. “These are essen-tial as they assist researchers in the examination and accurate identification of species. As the planned publication would primarily be a visual guide, full colour photographs of good quality of all species in the veld, as well as detailed images highlighting distinguishing characteristics, will be included. The inclusion of microscopic spore images will further aid to proper identifica-tion,” says Retha.

The project is registered with SANParks as an official research project and all specimens are de-posited in the National Collection of Fungi at the Agricultural Research Council in Pretoria. “Despite their importance, fungi are usually overlooked by scientists in biodiversity and taxonomy initiatives and activities, and apart from those groups that are commonly used as food, by the general public,” says Retha.

Retha explains that very few habitats and eco-logical niches in South Africa have been explored in terms of fungi. This, she says, is probably the result of the indigenous fungal diversity not being considered as a research priority and virtually all resources in South Africa having been directed towards economically important micro-fungi spe-cies over the past 50 years. “In South Africa there is only a handful of mycologists identifying and naming species. Furthermore, most surveys done

on macro-fungi in South Africa are restricted to high-rainfall areas and the few publications avail-able are based thereupon,” says Retha.

The identification of specimens collected during the survey is extremely challenging. Although specimens can be secured in the National Collec-tion of Fungi at the ARC, a mycologist to assist with the identification thereof is not available. The lichen section at SANBI is also currently not functional. Therefore, the project relies heavily on international experts, as well as DNA analysis for proper identification to species level. “The impor-tance of this survey is not only to provide baseline information, such as primary species occurrence and abundance in the Limpopo Valley area, but also to make these findings accessible to all. The survey will definitely yield new distribution records for known species and the possibility of recording species which have not been described is not ex-cluded,” says Retha. She says it is hoped that this initiative would be the first step towards a better understanding, awareness and the conservation of these species, quoting Linnaeus: “If the names of things are neglected then the knowledge of them will also perish.”

Residents can now also get involved in the project. “Your support will

enable the project to mushroom,” says Retha. People wishing to get involved can do so in three ways.

Option A would be to spon-sor a species at R1 000 per

species. “Your donation will cover the costs regard-

ing the fieldwork, scientific identification, including DNA

sequencing, preparation of a microscopic spore image and the photo editing for a specific

species,” says Retha. To this end, a person can sponsor any species of

their choice exclusively. In recognition, their name will appear as donor on the specific page in the final publication. They will also qualify for at least 25% discount when you purchase a copy of the field guide directly from the author, and stand a chance to win a framed original watercolour painting (with fungi as theme) by botanical artist Annatjie Greyling (draw date is 30 April 2016).

Option B would be for a person to sponsor a DNA sequencing at R480. This donation will cover the cost regarding a DNA sequencing to determine or confirm the identification of a single fungi specimen. Donors’ names will also be listed in the final publication while they will quality for a 15% discount in purchasing the field guide. Two watercolour prints from Greyling can also be won.

Option C entails a person’s sponsoring a micro-scopic spore image at R100. This will cover the cost to prepare a microscopic spore image as further identification aid, while the sponsor will also get recognition in the final publication.

For more information about the project, or to get an updated list of what species are still available with regard to option A, phone Retha at Tel 079 209 6233 or send her an email at [email protected]

The street to be scruti-nized this week, is Van Warmelo Street, but as has become the norm in this series, we deviate a bit.

A number of readers have pointed out that the articles don’t always focus on the specifi c person the street was named after. This is true, because it is not a series of biographies – it is a series focussing on the history of the region. The name of the street is a starting point, but from here we explore the rest of the region. Often the exploration ends in areas where the streets have no names, or otherwise put, where the main role players’ names were never put on street signs.

The story that starts with Van Warmelo is one such exploration.

Readers with informa-tion on the streets not yet covered in the series must please contact Anton at [email protected] or Pétria at [email protected].

of the Soutpansberg and described them as “mi-jne eigene gemeente, mijne schaapjes” (my own community, my sheep). Josina found herself in the role as the “mother” of the congregation and had to get used to the somewhat strange customs of the local people. Every Sunday morning a wife of one of the elders in the church would come to fetch her at home and accompany her to her seat next to the wife of the eldest “ouder-ling”. It was quite a shock when Josina died after a short illness on 28 January 1865 and Van Warmelo was very depressed for some time.

Van Warmelo was not the fi rst man of the cloth to bury his wife at the foot of the Sout-

pansberg mountain range. On 25 June 1862 a Scottish reverend, Alex-

ander MacKidd, married the 36-year-old Boer lady, Ester

Susanna (Hessie) Bosman. The marriage ceremo-

ny was performed in Bloemfontein by the well-known rever-end of the Dutch Reformed Church, Andrew Murray. MacKidd was re-cruited in Scotland, as the Cape-based church could not fi nd a local reverend willing to enter the missionary fi elds.

To be a missionary during the 19th century

was also no easy task. The ZAR government was

not very accommodating and did not trust mission-

aries. It was against the law to teach the gospel to black or coloured

people and special permission from the local magistrate was needed for this. MacKidd therefore had to wait before he could venture further north to hunt for the souls of the indige-nous people.

His opportunity eventually came in Decem-ber 1862 when the Buys community from the Soutpansberg invited him to come and stay among them and teach the gospel. The letter inviting him was signed by Michael Buys, one of the sons of the legendary Coenraad de Buys. De Buys and his family arrived in the Soutpansberg in the early 1820s. He disappeared without a trace in 1829, leaving behind his family on the banks of the Limpopo river.

The MacKidd couple left for the Soutpansberg on 25 April 1863. They arrived on the farm of

the Lottering family on 13 May 1863 and the young reverend delivered his fi rst sermon four days later. This also caused the fi rst of many confl icts within the local white com-munity, as he baptised two white children. This did not go down well in a com-munity where most of the residents were members of the Hervormde church. Members of the Dutch Reformed Church (NG Kerk) and the Hervorm-de church did not agree on a number of matters (to put it lightly).

MacKidd initial-ly started with his work on the farm Goedgedacht, which

was donated to the church by Lottering. He

soon realised that more space would be needed and bought the farm Kranspoort, using his own money. This would become the base from where the missionary work was to be done. (MacKidd also stated in his will that this farm was to go to the church after his death to be used for mis-sionary work). Not only Rev MacKidd made an impression with his earnest dedication. His wife very quickly started teaching lessons for young and old. When the fi rst buildings arose at the missionary station at Goedgedacht, the lessons became more structured, and in the evenings Hessie MacKidd could be found singing and praying with a group of children.

The Soutpansberg was notorious for its “dead-liness” and in April 1864 Mrs Hessie MacKidd went down with the fever. She died on 4 May and probably became the fi rst white person to die while on a missionary station in the Sout-pansberg. Her husband followed her a year later and died on 30 April 1865. The burial ceremony was conducted by Rev Van Warmelo, who was still battling at that stage to cope with the death of his own wife three months before. Almost half a century after their deaths, on 9 September 1922, the remains of MacKidd and his wife were removed from the Goedgedacht farm and reburied at the Kranspoort mission station.

The angel of death not only knocked on the doors of the Dutch missionaries in the Soutpansberg. In 1869, two Swiss missionaries, Ernest Creux and Paul Berthoud, arrived in South Africa. The two started with their work in the then Basoetoeland and for the fi rst three years worked under the auspices of the Paris Evangelical Missionary Society. In 1873, reverends Mabille and Ber-thoud took a journey to the north to see whether a missionary station could be opened. In the region known as the Spelonken they encountered the Shangaan people and realised that there was a need to work among this community.

On 9 July 1875, Creux and Bert houd, accom-panied by their wives and children, arrived at

In the small graveyard at Schoemansdal, only two graves have tombstones. One is a dedication to the pioneer Voortrekker, Andries Hendrik Potgieter, while the other tombstone pays homage to Josina van Warmelo, wife of the minister of the Nederduitsche Hervormde church, NJ van Warmelo.

One of the oldest streets in Louis Trichardt is named after Nicolaas Jacobus van Warmelo, the fi rst clergyman to take residence in the town of Schoemansdal, way back in 1864. He only lived here for less than three years, but during this time left quite an impression on the hunters, traders and possibly also slave dealers in this northernmost town of the ZAR.

Van Warmelo was born in Gou-da in the Netherlands and was admitted as a minister of the Nederlandse Hervormde church in 1858. The idea of doing missionary work in Africa ap-pealed to him and in 1862 he visited the Cape. He initially assisted in preach-ing the gospel in Cape Town under the guidance of the Dutch Reformed Church minister JS Spijker. While in Cape Town, he met Rev GW Smits from Rustenburg, who en-couraged him to take up the position of minister in the Hervormde church at Schoemansdal.

Van Warmelo fi rst had to re-turn to Rotterdam, among others to get married to Josina van Vollenhoven in February 1864. She was the fi fth child of Pieter van Vollenhoven, president of the judiciary in Rotterdam. His parents-in-law were not very keen on letting their daughter explore the un-knowns of Africa, but the newlywed couple were determined to go.

Three months after the wedding, the couple arrived in the Transvaal and Rev Van Warme-lo was sworn in as a minister of the church in Pretoria. On Friday, 29 July 1864, Rev Van Warmelo attended his fi rst of many church com-mittee meetings in Schoemansdal and the next day some 600 people witnessed his inauguration as fi rst minister of the local congregation of the church. The then president of the ZAR, M.W. Pretorius, and several members of his executive council were also present. Van Warmelo had an immense passion and love for the people

the Lottering family on 13 May 1863 and the young reverend delivered his fi rst sermon four days later. This also caused the fi rst of many confl icts within the local white com-munity, as he baptised two white children. what was later to become Valdezia. One of the fi rst problems they had to overcome was the language barrier. At that stage, both missionar-ies could speak some Sotho, but they quickly realised that the local people spoke Chigwamba or Tsonga.

Despite all the diffi culties, the Swiss men and women set about turning the somewhat inhos-pitable area into a mission station. A year later, when the fi rst buildings were fi nished, more trou-ble arrived, but this time in the form of the Boer government. As previously mentioned, the ZAR did not take kindly to anyone wanting to teach the gospel to non-whites. Creux and Berthoud were arrested on 2 August 1876 and placed in protective custody. Their arrest caused quite a stir among the local white community and Rev Stephanus Hofmeyr was one of the people who petitioned the government to put an end to the

“schandelijke daad” (scandalous deed). Hofmeyr, at that stage the mission-

ary at Kranspoort, often visited the Swiss missionary station

and got along well with Creux and Berthoud.

The officer commanding 3 Air Servicing Unit (3 ASU), Col Moses Njomo, thanked the Regional Works Unit Limpopo (RWUL) of the South African Defence Force for what he described as their genuine support in projecting the good image of AFB Makhado, in particular with regard to the Roodewal bombing range.

Njomo was speaking during the handing-over ceremony of a construction project at the bombing range by the officer commanding the RWUL, Col David Mohitlhi, on 29 March. The project entailed the building of the transport park, the erecting of palisade fencing, as well as the building of a double-storey house at the range.

Njomo urged the RWUL to continue supporting the base in all tasks that required facilities and commended the unit on a job well done.

Mohitlhi, accompanied by a team of experts, told the delegates present that no future risks were expected at the facilities. “Register any future

projects with regional works in order to receive excellent service,” he said.

At least 40 members were involved in this project. Among them were artisans who were experts in bricklaying, electrical work, tiling, welding, plumbing, painting, building, carpentry and plastering.

The project started in 2013 and was due to be completed in four months. It was, however, only completed this year because of several setbacks. Among these setbacks was a shortage of materi-als. In total, an amount of only R12 117.50 was used in purchasing some materials for the project, while 99% of materials needed were bought by AFB Makhado. Another aspect that delayed the completion of the project was the normal turnaround time of the procurement process and the issue of the scaffolding and other materials. Despite all this, the project was finally completed. During the ceremony, project planner Maj Paul Kekana said he was satisfied with the work done by the team.

AFB Makhado officially took over the recently completed construction project at their Roodewal bombing range. The project, which entailed the building of a transport park, doublestorey house and palisade fencing, was completed by the SANDF’s Regional Works Unit Limpopo (RWUL). Pictured, from left to right, during the handingover ceremony are Col David Mohithli (officer commanding RWUL), Maj Paul Kekana (project planner) and Col Moses Njomo (officer commanding 3 Air Service Unit). The 24yearold singer and songwriter from Waterval, Clement “Clemour” Ngobeni, continues to shine more brightly on MNet’s TV competition, The Voice South Africa.

Two weeks ago he performed brilliantly to pro-ceed to the next round of the competition. He is a member of Team Kahn, led by The Parlotones’ Kahn Morbee. The four judges in the competition each chose 14 candidates during the “blind” au-ditions. These candidates are pitted against each other in a “sing-off” and only one can proceed to the next round.

The judges labelled and described Clemour as “a dynamo”, “crazy” and “feisty” after he “literally roared” whilst singing Katy Perry’s song Roar.

A resident of Waterval Section A, Clemour is currently residing in Midrand.

Clemour said that his fans should expect the unexpected for his next performance.

“I want the world to know what I am made of,” said Clemour. “Expect some blues and soul, just me”.

12 ZOUTPANSBERGER, 8 APRIL 2016

Daar was werklike gebeure: ‘n kind is

Preference is given to short, factual letters

concerning local matters. The editor reserves the right to shorten letters.

BRIEWE / LETTERS Write to us at PO Box 1680, Louis Trichardt, 0920 / Skryf aan ons te Posbus 1680, Louis Trichardt,

0920 of [email protected]

“Dieselfde wit T-hemde. Dieself-de jeans. Dieselfde boetse. Dieselfde baadjies ... Alles dieselfde, behalwe dat dit duurder is as ‘n jaar of twee gelede se klere.”

“Ek neem net dringende oproepe vandag.”

“O hel, Daisy. Wat gaan aan?” Kathy weet dadelik daar is fout.

Daisy begin huil.“Okei, okei ... Jammer Daisy – ek het vergeet

Paastyd was net nou die dag. Vertel my liewers

– wat het jy nodig? Moet ek vir jou ‘n klere-din-getjie of twee bring, dan kom kuier ek die naweek?”

“Kathy, dit gaan meer as net ‘n sak vol klere verg. Ek gaan in-diepte veranderings moet maak.

Luis-ter na You can leave your hat on of Patricia the Stripper van Chris de Dinges ...

“Jy is ‘n vriendin duisend, Kath!

Toe is my lewe maar redelik ... vaal. Vervelig. Voorspelbaar.

“Nou het ek die bul by die horings gepak en vir Bernard gevra om my gou Lanseria toe te vlieg. Sal jy my kan kom kry?

“Luister, Kathy, ek dink ek begin hierdie skatryk storie verstaan. Jy moes gesien het hoe gelukkig is Bernard toe ek hom vertel ek wil vir ‘n week of so Kaap toe gaan ...

Ian Macdonald, Louis Trichardt, writes:

On behalf of myself, my family and my guests, I want to thank Dennis & Vicky, the

owners of Mountain Inn and Clouds’ End hotels for providing a really memorable occasion.

The staff of Clouds’ End, Armando, Charmain and the others, went out of their way and pro-vided my guests with a great venue, atmosphere and professional service at the Duck & Run venue and the accommodation at both hotels was excellent and great value.

My guests from close and afar were very impressed, had a great time and will be your best advert.

Thank you very much.

Swemnuus
