Page 13: 08-21-16 1 Samuel 26;6-12, 21-25 Respect

1 Sam 26:6-12 ESV6 Then David said to Ahimelech the Hittite, and to Joab's brother Abishai (aBISHaaeye) the son of Zeruiah (zurOOeeah), “Who will go down with me into the camp to Saul?” And Abishai said, “I will go down with you.”

Page 14: 08-21-16 1 Samuel 26;6-12, 21-25 Respect

7 So David and Abishai went to the army by night. And there lay Saul sleeping within the encampment, with his spear stuck in the ground at his head, and Abner and the army lay around him.

8 Then Abishai said to David, “God has given your enemy into your hand this day. Now please let me pin him to the earth with one stroke of the spear, and I will not strike him twice.”

Page 16: 08-21-16 1 Samuel 26;6-12, 21-25 Respect

9 But David said to Abishai, “Do not destroy him, for who can put out his hand against the LORD's anointed and be guiltless?”

Page 17: 08-21-16 1 Samuel 26;6-12, 21-25 Respect

10 And David said, “As the LORD lives, the LORD

will strike him, or his day will come to die, or he will go down into battle and perish.

(Romans 12:19 “Vengeance is Mine, I will repaysays the Lord.”)

Page 18: 08-21-16 1 Samuel 26;6-12, 21-25 Respect

11 The LORD forbid that I should put out my hand against the LORD's anointed (the office of the king or president or pastor). But take now the spear that is at his head and the jar of water, and let us go.”

Page 19: 08-21-16 1 Samuel 26;6-12, 21-25 Respect

12 So David took the spear and the jar of water from Saul's head, and they went away. No man saw it or knew it, nor did any awake, for they were all asleep, because a deep sleep from the LORD had fallen upon them.

22 And David answered and said, “Here is the spear, O king! Let one of the young men come over and take it.

Page 22: 08-21-16 1 Samuel 26;6-12, 21-25 Respect

23 The LORD rewards every man for his righteousness and his faithfulness, for the LORD

gave you into my hand today, and I would not put out my hand against the LORD's anointed. 24 Behold, as your life was precious this day in my sight, so may my life be precious in the sight of the LORD, and may He deliver me out of all tribulation.”

Page 23: 08-21-16 1 Samuel 26;6-12, 21-25 Respect

25 Then Saul said to David, “Blessed be you, my son David! You will do many things and will succeed in them.” So David went his way, and Saul returned to his place.

A dictator says, "Go." A leader says, "Let's go." David is a true leader. Jesus, our Greater than David, neither asks us to go where He hasn't gone before (Hebrews 4:15), nor where He won't go with us.

Page 28: 08-21-16 1 Samuel 26;6-12, 21-25 Respect

Hebrews 4:15 ESV15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but One Who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin.

Romans 12:14-21 ESV14 Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them. 15 Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. 16 Live in harmony with one another. Do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly. Never be wise in your own sight. 17 Repay no one evil for evil, but give thought to do what is honorable in the sight of all.

Page 34: 08-21-16 1 Samuel 26;6-12, 21-25 Respect

18 If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. 19 Beloved, never avengeyourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay, says the Lord.” 20 To the contrary, “if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.” 21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

Sometimes danger comes to us not only from unspiritual enemies like Saul, but from overzealous friends like Abishai.

David knew Saul was still the anointed instrument in God's hand to work in his own life.

Therefore, he wisely refused Abishai's offer to kill Saul.

Page 37: 08-21-16 1 Samuel 26;6-12, 21-25 Respect

This is a second time, it would seem, God had given David an opportunity to get rid of his enemy.

But it wasn't an opportunity, it was a test for David to prove whether he would take things into his own hands or wait upon the Lord.

1 Samuel 16:13a ESV13a Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers.

Page 40: 08-21-16 1 Samuel 26;6-12, 21-25 Respect

When Saul was anointed, it was with a vial of oil (1 Samuel 10:1).

David, on the other hand, was anointed with a horn of oil, a big flask.

Why?

Page 41: 08-21-16 1 Samuel 26;6-12, 21-25 Respect

Because oil in the Word is a symbol of the Holy Spirit and David is a picture of the true Anointed One, the Christos, Jesus, Who would be anointed with the oil of gladness more than any of His brethren (Hebrews 1:9).

Page 42: 08-21-16 1 Samuel 26;6-12, 21-25 Respect

Hebrews 1:9 ESVYou have loved righteousness and hated wickedness; therefore God, your God, has anointed You with the oil of gladnessbeyond Your companions (brothers).

1 Samuel 16:13 ESV13 Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers.

Page 44: 08-21-16 1 Samuel 26;6-12, 21-25 Respect

Notice that Samuel anoints David in the midst of his brethren.

How much did David's father and brothers understand about this anointing?

In view of David's subsequent association with King Saul, perhaps they interpreted the event as a consecration for David's special service to the king.

Page 45: 08-21-16 1 Samuel 26;6-12, 21-25 Respect

Most likely Samuel privately told David that he had been chosen by the Lord to be the next king.

If so, his behavior while serving Saul was remarkably mature for a young man who one day would wear the crown.

Page 46: 08-21-16 1 Samuel 26;6-12, 21-25 Respect

No doubt it was the assurance of this future hope that helped to keep David faithful during the ensuing years of trial and persecution.

David had at least two chances to easily kill Saul.

Page 47: 08-21-16 1 Samuel 26;6-12, 21-25 Respect

But his trials and testings during those wilderness years helped to build his faithand develop his godly character and prepare him for the ministry that God had planned for him.

Page 48: 08-21-16 1 Samuel 26;6-12, 21-25 Respect

When David and Jonathan became friends (1 Samuel 18:1) and covenanted to be faithful to each other (18:3; 20:16), it's certain that David revealed to Jonathan that he was God's anointed king.

Page 49: 08-21-16 1 Samuel 26;6-12, 21-25 Respect

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-6pkTQk61MX0/ULcGfE7j6GI/AAAAAAAAnRk/5UtTOzg7KaY/s1600/DavidJonathan.jpg

When David became king, he would make Jonathan second in command (23:16-18).

Page 50: 08-21-16 1 Samuel 26;6-12, 21-25 Respect

It's not likely that Jonathan told his paranoid father about David or their covenant, but somehow Saul discovered that David was his successor (20:30-31) and tried all the more to kill him.

Page 51: 08-21-16 1 Samuel 26;6-12, 21-25 Respect

He expected his men to inform him about David and his whereabouts and Saul let them know that David was chosen to be the next king (22:6-8).

Page 52: 08-21-16 1 Samuel 26;6-12, 21-25 Respect

http://www.gci.org/files/David_anointed.jpg

David will eventually be anointed three times.

The first time was in the presence of his father and his brothers.

Page 53: 08-21-16 1 Samuel 26;6-12, 21-25 Respect

The second time is in 2 Samuel 2:4, when he was anointed over the tribe of Judah.

The third time is in 2 Samuel 5, when he was anointed as king over all Israel.

Page 54: 08-21-16 1 Samuel 26;6-12, 21-25 Respect

Sometimes a man will think he's anointed for ministry and his mom will heartily agree.

A few others might even recognize his anointing—and he'll wonder why everyone else doesn't see it.

Page 55: 08-21-16 1 Samuel 26;6-12, 21-25 Respect

Most likely it's because it's not God’s time.

There is an unfolding of God's plan for a man or woman in service or ministry.

You cannot rush it, anointing is recognized by others in stages.

Page 56: 08-21-16 1 Samuel 26;6-12, 21-25 Respect

It doesn't happen quickly.

As it did with David, it comes when you fight battles on behalf of others, when you gain victory for others by caring for them, standing by them, helping them.

Page 57: 08-21-16 1 Samuel 26;6-12, 21-25 Respect

David was an incredible man—a man after God's own heart, unlike anyone the world had ever seen—yet it took 12 years before his anointing was recognized.

Saul was impatient, David, on the other hand, patiently waited.

http://www.followhisfootprints.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/wait-patiently.jpg

So must we wait patiently.

Isaiah 40:31 ESV31 but they who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.

Hypochondriac’s epitaph:

Page 71: 08-21-16 1 Samuel 26;6-12, 21-25 Respect

Although Saul doesn’t know it, he’s about to die so this is his epitaph.

What must it feel like to be seventy, eighty, or ninety—headed toward your eternal destiny—and say, "I've been a fool. I've pursued things I shouldn't have pursued."

Page 72: 08-21-16 1 Samuel 26;6-12, 21-25 Respect

One of the primary messages of the Bible is to teach us to live as though this is our last day.

That's the beauty of watching for the Lord's coming every day.

Saul goes back to his palace and neversees David again.

He slinks off the pages of Scripture withthe summary conclusion: “I have playedthe fool. I have erred greatly.”

Before this week is over, you'll have an opportunity to lop off a head, to snip a garment, or to make a comment.

But perhaps the Lord would say to you, "There's a better way."

Page 84: 08-21-16 1 Samuel 26;6-12, 21-25 Respect

Our prayer is that the power of the Word being heard and received today will change us from glory to glory—from a Saul to a David.

Page 85: 08-21-16 1 Samuel 26;6-12, 21-25 Respect

The Saul of the OT was a driven man, the Saul of the NT became a called man (Paul), a changed man, a man who had been transformed! (see Romans 12)

Page 86: 08-21-16 1 Samuel 26;6-12, 21-25 Respect

Romans 12:1-2 ESV1 I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. 2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind (your thinking), that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

Romans 12:1-2 ESV

The Plan of Hope & Salvation
