On Tuesday, San Mateo County supervisors will con- sider approving a $2 million contract extension with Santa Clara County to keep using the beds two more years. The contract guarantees San Mateo County two acute inpatient mental health beds in the Santa Clara County jail through June 2011 for inmates who are “gravely disabled” and may be refusing to eat, take medication or bathe, said San Mateo County Health System spokeswoman Beverly Thames. Those inmates require individual cells, licensed nurses and psychiatric staff. Included in the costs are hearings in which a judge can order forced medication, she said.
