This past Sunday we were scheduled for our annual picnic and baptism service at Thousand Hills State Park. This is our tenth year and we have never been rained out. The forecast showed a chance of rain, but nothing major. That afternoon, it poured down rain with lots of lightning and thunder. Around four in the afternoon, the blackest cloud rolled through, and the rain followed. At five o’clock, I drove out to the park in a continuous rain. At the shelter, there were several gathered getting things ready for the picnic. When I arrived, I anticipated a lot of down faces and deep pessimism about the prospects for the service and picnic. Instead there was an air of anticipation. We looked at the radar on our smartphones and thought we might have a window of opportunity. So, with the rain still falling, the ham- burgers and hotdogs were put on the grill. Surrounded by dark clouds we gathered at the beach for the service, and it and the baptism went off without a hitch. The picnic was then ready, and we had a great time of celebration, fellowship and of course, eating. At 4 o’clock that afternoon I was ready to face the prospect of needing to cancel the event. That was not God’s plan. He gave another weather win- dow of opportunity, and I believe we may have held one of the best services to date. I know God is good, but often His goodness in simply amazing.
