Heading up the five winners is Andrea Bocelli, chosen for the International Masi Prize ‘Civiltà del Vino’. Named by the New York Times as “the most popular opera singer of all time”, Bocelli rates wine as one of his three great passions in life along with music and horses. He and his brother, Al- berto, represent the third generation of a family steeped in the culture of ‘the soil’ on their estate of 120 hectares at Lajatico, in the heart of the Val d’Era region near Pisa, where eight of its hectares are devoted to vines. So it is that Bocelli has earned this award because as a result of his “pre-eminence as an artist, coupled with his enthusiasm as a producer and joy as a connoisseur, he helps to bring wine alive, as he spreads the word that “a bottle of wine is a bottle of happiness”. e winner of the 33 rd edition of the Masi Prize ‘Grosso d’Oro Veneziano’ was awarded in collaboration with the ‘Corriere della Sera’ Foundation. Journalist and writer, Svetlana Alexievich, originally from the Ukraine and now living in Belarus, has chronicled the most important events in Russia during the second half of the twentieth century. ese events have been the inspiration for her best-known and internationally acclaimed books (e unwomanly face of war; Zinky boys; Voices from Chernobyl) which have been translated into numerous languages. Alexievich was nomi- nated to receive the Masi Prize 2014 because “the extraor- dinary research accomplished by this journalist during the Soviet and Post-Communist eras allows her to give voice in the West to the emotions and unresolved dramas within the lives of ordinary people in Eastern European society.” e 2014 Masi ‘Civiltà Veneta’ Prize bears the signatures of Umberto Contarello, Mario Isnenghi and the ‘Associ- azione Ville Venete’ represented by Alberto Passi.
