    Implementation Of Soft Handover

Eortunate!y the signa! structure of DM> is e!! suited for the im,!ementation of softhandover. This is ecause in the u,!in/ to or more ase stations can receive the samesigna! ecause of the reuse factor of one? and in the don!in/ the moi!e station cancoherent!y comine the signa!s from different ase stations since it sees them as Fustadditiona! mu!ti,ath com, onents. This ,rovides an additiona! enefit ca!!ed macro diversity9i.e. the diversity gain ,rovided y the rece, tion of one or more additiona! signa!s:.

    > se,arate channe! ca!!ed ,i!ot is usua!!y used for the signa! strength measurements forhandover ,ur,oses.

In the don!in/ hoever soft handover creates more interference to the system sincethe ne ase station no transmits an additiona! signa! for the moi!e station. It is ,ossi!ethat the moi!e station cannot catch a!! the energy that the ase station transmits due to a!imited numer of R>G( fingers. Thus the gain of soft handover in the don!in/ de,endson the gain of macro diversity and the !oss of ,erformance due to increased interference.

In the u,!in/ the moi!e station signa! is received y the to ase stations hich after

demodu!ation and comining ,ass the signa! forard to the comining ,oint ty,ica!!y tothe ase station contro!!er 9;S:. In the don!in/ the same information is transmitted viaoth ase stations and the moi!e station receives the information from to ase stationsas se,arate mu!ti,ath signa!s and can therefore comine them.
