The Glenside Bike Show took place on Saturday, August 7, 2011, and we were proud to attend and enjoy the festivities. It’s always good to see old familiar faces and see that everyone is doing well. In our business, we often get to meet fellow bikers under less than great circumstances at the beginning of the relationship. It is truly a great feeling to touch base with all of our clients when the difficult times have passed and everyone is feeling good again and enjoying the riding season.

Getting out to the counties, especially in the Berks and Lehigh Valley areas is something that we look forward to every riding season. The Lehigton Bike night took place on August 14, 2010, and it couldn’t have been better. The weather broke and it was nothing but bikes, people, and mountains. Mother Nature cooperated and all was good.

As we take the time to talk to everyone who comes by the booth, in between chomping down on a pulled pork sandwich, we always remind our fellow riders that you need to protect yourself while on your bike. In the counties outside of Philadelphia, the cost to insure you from future financial woes in the event of an accident is minimal.

Whether you live in Pennsylvania or New Jersey --Having uninsured and underinsured coverage on your bike and car or truck will protect you and your family from the possibility of severe losses resulting from an accident. Having uninsured and underinsured coverage of $100,000.00 will cost a little more, but the cash differential is small compared to the potential losses you or your family may suffer.

We think the small savings is an inadequate substitution for the right to be able to receive adequate compensation for injuries to you or your family. If you don’t have uninsured and underinsured coverage, you DO NOT have to wait until your policy renews to purchase the coverage’s. You should call your insurance broker immediately to secure this coverage.

Remember, what an insurance company may call “full coverage” is not always full protection. You do not have full protection on your bike or car or truck if you don’t have uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage. If you call us, we would be happy to review your insurance coverage’s with you and make recommendations at no charge.

We don’t sell insurance, we represent bikers in accident cases, but we can make sure your insurance coverage’s are adequate in the event your or a family member are injured.

Baseball season has started and the riding season is under way. It’s time to polish up the bike and get it on the road. Has it been weeks or months since you've ridden? Remember -- riding is a skill and skills get rusty when not used. So before you get out on the highway, take some time to rebuild your skills. Practice at slower speeds for awhile. Use your eyes to avoid winter potholes and other hazards and make yourself visible to other drivers. Remember, most accidents happen from the front with left turning vehicles cutting in front of you, cars disregarding stop signs and shooting through intersections and vehicles changing lanes or pulling out of parking spots. Look over your bike, it's probably been sitting alone all winter. Is the State inspection current? Does anything look loose or in need of repair? How are the tires? As riders, one of our biggest fears is that a tire can blow at high speed. Take a look at your battery, if it’s older than two years and you haven’t hooked it up to a battery maintainer, it may be time to replace it. It’s smart to do a good visual inspection of your drive belt to make sure it looks good as there is no easy roadside fix for a broken driver belt. Make sure your kill switch is still operable before you take the bike out for the first ride of the season. Take your bike in for a tune-up as our Tri-State area has some of the best dealers and mechanics in the country.

When I meet people (that don’t ride a motorcycle) for the first time and get to know them, I obviously get to where I ride a motorcycle. Usually I’ll get one of several responses; “That’s dangerous”, “I used to ride when I was younger” or “I hope you wear a helmet when you ride.” Once in a while someone will tell me that they would like to ride but are afraid.

I generally have two responses that I would offer to most people. The first thing is that if you’re not comfortable with the idea of being on two wheels and going �0mph down the highway, you shouldn’t even attempt it. Riding a motorcycle is serious business and those that are afraid of it should stick to riding the back seat or standing on the road side as we go zipping by. I would never try to talk someone into riding a motorcycle.

The other thing is that if you’re going to start riding ... DO IT RIGHT! Get registered in the Motorcycle Safety Course www.msf-usa.org and finding out if there is a class near you. If there isn’t check with your Harley dealership, many of them offer a safety class or can help you find one near you. After you’ve done that ride with people you trust and learn from their experience.

Riding motorcycle is a great experience and lot of fun. You get to meet some really great people and help in worthwhile charities while getting out of the house and going places. There are plenty of ride clubs and people that are more than willing to help you learn how to be a better and safer rider.

Every year there are plenty of new riders out there on the roads. This summer there will probably be even more than usual, with the higher prices of gas. Do your part as an experienced rider and pass on your knowledge to others and help them to become a better rider. It will enrich your life as well.

The June calendar is full of places to go and things to do. Get there and have a good time. I’ll see you on the road or at the next bike show.

Oh, and don’t forget Dad on Father’s Day. As a Dad I can say that we may not always do the right thing for our kids, but one thing we do is to love them. No matter what you do, take a moment to let your Dad know how much you love him.

The giant is backHarley Rendezvous returns to New JerseyStory and photos by Norm Keller

It has been a few years since the Harley Rendezvous brought the Jersey Giant to the Garden State Exhibit Center in Somerset, NJ but they came back this year to the delight of their many friends in the area. Hosting an exhibition of local bike shops & builders, vendors and an old time swap meet & tattoo show the exhibit center was buzzing with exhibitors from the area and New England.

Walking around the hall you were treated to the sight of some beautiful custom bikes waiting to take home their trophies. There was also a collection of vintage & antique bikes on display as well as drag and race machines that would make your eyes pop.

Music was provided by guitarist/singer Ron Jones www.bikerronjones.com from the New England area. Attendees also had a chance to win �0/�0 drawings and enter the tattoo contest. There was plenty to keep you entertained all weekend long.

With the recent economy many of the winter shows in this area have been forced to shut down but the Jersey Giant is back and from the looks of things they are here to stay. We hope that they will stay and be a part of the Jersey ride community for a long time to come.

The Harley Rendezvous Classic is an annual event held at the Lookout Coun-try Club in Pattersonville, NY. This year the event will be June 2�-2� and if you’re looking for an old time biker party, this one is for you. You can find out more about this event at www.harleyrendezvous.com where you can also get your reservation details.

The Breast Cancer Raffle Bike, built by MCS Customs

A woman is diagnosed with breast cancer EVERY THREE MINUTES in this country. Every THREE MINUTES! Think about it, how long did it take you to have dinner last night? Maybe a half hour? While you enjoyed that meal, theo-retically, TEN women heard those terrifying words, “I’m sorry… you have breast cancer.”

When Cale Mutter, Mutter’s Cycle Service, first told me that he would be building a bike to be raffled off to raise money for the the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation I told him immediately that I had to photograph the bike for the magazine. After the bike was completed I was very impressed with the results and how it came out.

Heather Moyer, along with Shari Bowen, Jaimee Juhasz and Laura Wasylak have been working tirelessly on the bike raffle to sell the 2,000 tickets. As of this date there are less than 1,000 tickets left to sell so I’d have to say that they are doing a great job in getting the word out there. If you haven’t bought your ticket yet, at only $20.00 a ticket, you might want to go to their website www.helpinghooters.org and contact them to get your ticket now.

I asked Heather and some of the team members how they got involved in building a custom bike for a raffle, which is a lot of work and most raffles loose money. Heather told me “My story is very basic. I have worked in community advocacy and especially advocacy against cancer for about ten years. After an extended family member was diagnosed with stage four breast cancer, she was denied medical treatment due to lack of medical care and was told to take holistic approaches. She past less than two moths latter.”

Heather further added “The teams friend Melissa Oister, at ther age of 29, found a lump and was diagnosed with stage four breast cancer. On her 30th birthday, she spent the day receiving her first treatment and had a double mastectomy six months later.” I would say that these are some very good reasons for wanting to do something that can help others in this cause.

Shari Bowen added “I lost my father to lung cancer in February 2010 and a few months later our good friend Melissa Oister was diagnosed with breast cancer. We were all touched by this horrible disease in our own way

unfortunately. Cale & Lisa Mutter have helped us tremendously and we appreciate all their hard work.” With such a close connection to this disease the project becomes a labor of love.

BIG BROTHER IS WATCHINGNot long ago, I received a video-tape showing a client’s accident as

it took place. The video came from a bank surveillance camera and was obtained by the police who investigated the accident.

The video wasn’t much help because it was shot from to far away to show who was at fault, but it proved what I have suspected for many years, that many of our actions are being recorded by security cameras without our knowledge or consent.

While hoping not to sound too paranoid, I actually assume that when I am in a commercial area, I am being recorded. Although I don’t change my behavior, this “invasion of privacy” has become a reality. Making matters worse, rarely does a day goes by that we don’t read about some company tracking our movements through our computers, GPS systems or cell phones, intentionally or not. Add to the list, the hackers who steal information, and the personal information that many of us intentionally put on

the internet through networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, etc., and you can begin to understand that our private lives are becoming more public every day!

Those who read my columns know that I advocate curtailing any discussions about an accident, or any private matter, on the internet or through e-mail. As proof that I am not being overly cautious, some defense attorney’s are now requesting Facebook passwords in order to obtain information about accident victims. Whether the Courts will allow this invasion of privacy, remains to be seen.

Additionally, employers and college admission boards are searching networking sites to learn more about potential candidates. Further, I recently read about attorneys who are googling or Facebooking potential jurors right from the court room to learn more about them. No longer is justice blind, it’s now powered by Google!

The bottom line is, we have all become accustomed to putting personal information on the internet and in texts, e-mails, etc. – without thinking about the potential consequences. Therefore, my advice is simply - DO NOT PUT ANYTHING IN WRITING – BE IT IN A TEXT, E-MAIL or ON THE INTERNET, that you want kept private, because inevitably if some one looks hard enough – they may find these communications. If you want to discuss something sensitive ….. use the phone!

On another note, the PA Supreme Court recently decided in the case of AYERS v. GEICO that even if you insure your automobiles and motorcycles with the same insurance company and select the “stacking” option, if the insurer issues separate policies for each and the auto policy contains a “household vehicle exclusion”, you will not be able to stack your uninsured or underinsured coverages from your cycle policy onto your auto policy. I was cautiously optimistic that the Court would allow the “stacking” of these coverages because both of the vehicles were insured with the same company, thereby denying the auto insurer’s ability to argue that they didn’t know about the cycle.

A similar case was decided about a year ago, wherein the Court held that if the cycle and the auto were insured with separate companies, they would not be allowed to stack coverages, reasoning that the auto insurer did not know that their customer also owned a motorcycle and therefore was unable to take into account the risk of a motorcycle accident. However, in Ayers, it was the same company and that argument certainly would not apply. However, the Supreme Court in a 4 to 3 decision, held against the motorcyclist and in favor of the insurance company. (anyone surprised by this result…)

Currently, the only company that I know of that allows the stacking of both motorcycle and automobile policies in PA is State Farm. This stacking option does not apply in either New Jersey or Delaware as neither state allows for the “stacking” of benefits.

Losing a friend and a riding companion is never easy. Delores Armstrong rode behind her husband on trips which ranged from New England to West Virginia and always provided sensible support and companionship to her husband, Bob Armstrong.

The Armstrongs often invited me to ride with them over the years. I have memo-ries of my best group trips with the Motorcycle Friends or Gold Wing Road Riders’s Chapter A riding along with Delores and Bob. When we settled down for the night, Delores was one of the few people with whom I could relax and have a few after-ride drinks. Often we would start impromptu parties since she always seemed to find a large supply of munchies to share with anyone who

pulled up a chair in front of the Armstrong’s room.

Delores was buried on the afternoon of April 1st and members of Tri-state HOG attended the morning view-ing at the Videon Funeral Home in Broomall, PA. She will be missed.

Hundreds of riders from the tri-state area attended The 24th Annual Ride for Life on April 30th and May 1st to open the riding season by helping children with Muscular Dystrophy. On May 1st a bike parade took place at Dorney Park near Allentown, PA where the participants spent the day enjoying the amusement rides at the park. Charlie Dresden led the group from Tri-State HOG who participated in the fund raising effort.

Many area motorcyclists rode on April 17th to honor the memory of Bill “Stretch” Smaltz, an area Harley-Davidson dealer who cared about people as much as the bikes they rode. The procession started at the Bob Evans on Route 100 in Exton, PA at noon and proceeded to Wentz UCC Church for a memorial service held at 1:00pm.

Hannum’s Harley-Davidson sponsored the Fanconi Anemia Awareness Run from the Chadds Ford Dealership to help a Tri-State member’s cousin who is battling the disease. The group left Chadds ford at 1:00 for a ride through the Chester County countryside then returned to Hannum’s for a hamburger cook out.

The Lucy 7 Motorcycle Club held a run to help Autistic children the same day from McGerks Pub in Fort Washington, PA.

The Spring Jersey Giant Motorcycle Swap Meet and Show took place in April at the Garden State Exhibit Center in Somerset, NJ. Participants could enter a tattoo contest, purchase motorcycle parts or ride the newest Harley-Davidson motorcycles.

Another chance to exchange and purchase motorcycle parts took place at the Seaboard Chapter of the Antique Motorcycle Club of America’s Motorcycle Swap Meet and Antique Motorcycle Display on April 10th at the Penn Expo Center in Pennsville, NJ.

Tri-State HOG held its first chapter ride to the battleship New Jersey’s Vietnam Living History Day held on April 2nd at the Camden, NJ Waterfront. Bill Wilson, the Activities Director, led the group from the Springfield Diner in Springfield, PA. When the group arrived at the battleship, they were able to line their bikes on the pier and be participants in the event which included a presentation by Vietnam Veterans, demonstrations of military vehicles and a BBQ with a rock band playing on the fantail of the ship to recall the steel beach parties the ship held in the past.

Threatening weather prevented the Keystone Chapter of Women on Wheels from taking their first ride to Ocean City , NJ after their monthly meeting at Smaltz’s Harley-Davidson in Eagle, PA on April 16th. Then rain foiled Director, Julianne Yarwood’s plan to have the group meet at the dealer-ship on April 23rd for a bike blessing.

Finally, in changeable weather on April 30th, Pat Guiseppe, the former Director, managed to lead a group of women from Smaltz’s Harley-Davidson for a meal at Lapp’s Restaurant in Quarryville. All-in-all, it was a good month for riding in the tri-state area.

For 1� years now, on the first Sunday in May, Father Paul VanSant has been presiding over his annual Blessing of the Bikes. For the past five years he has been offering the service at St. Stephen’s Church in Whiting, NJ. Father Paul told me that when he began at this parish, with many of the members over the age of �0, he was asked when he was going to “Bring the bikers.”

St. Stephens annually welcomes the noise and disruption on this one day a year to offer blessings for a safe year of riding in the coming season. Mu-sic is provided by the Junk Yard Dogs and there is plenty of BBQ and hot dogs to go around. It’s a good time of fellowship and getting together with friends that have gone into hiding over the winter months.

This year the weather was exceptional and the bikes were plentiful. Added to this years event was a baptism as attendees took time to celebrate before the blessing began.

As I walked around talking with people it was obvious that everyone was having a good time. Riders came from all over New Jersey and Pennsylvania to be a part of this event. It was a great day for a ride and starting the year having your bike blessed by Father Paul is a great way to begin the year.

Some showed up by themselves or with a few friends others came in groups to lend their support. There were members of the Christian Motorcyclists Association, ABATE of the Garden State, Rolling Thunder and there was a large group from the Kickstands Up blog group that attend many rides as well as hold their interesting ride events.

I’ve wanted to attend this event for several years now and was very happy to be a part of this years blessing and to get a chance to meet Father Paul. We’ve spoken on the phone a number of times but this was the first time that I actually got a chance to meet up with him. I can understand now why his bike blessings are so popular with New Jersey riders. He has a genuine love for bikers and makes himself available to them for any needs they may have. This event will continue to grow in popularity over the years as a “must attend” event.

I hope you enjoyed this story as much as I enjoyed meeting with Father Paul. He is truly a man of God that gives of himself to not only in his congregation but wherever he is needed.
