Abstract-This article highlights the practical experiences

acquired in design, realization and implementation of interactive

e-Iearning project located on the educational portal for students

called "eLearn central". This portal is permanently being used in

the distance and blended learning at our University, in the

popularization of Science and Technology between kids and

young people and for team work in everyday business life. The

authors are focusing on the principles of quality e-Iearning

courses development according to newest standards. They're

utilizing decades of practical experiences with the creation of

courses for eLearn central portal in MoodIe educational

environment. The authors present several available ways from

    1. INTRODUCTION Today if we are looking for some information and want to

get it in quick and easy way, most of us will take google.com as their first choice as easy as abc. And so do our students. This googlemania provides us most of the time valuable information extremely fast, but sometimes you have to count also with a lot of ballast. On the other hand, just one click in the wrong place is enough for the student to lose his attention when studying e-learning materials.

The main objective of our effort is to give students the high quality study materials prepared in user-friendly way.

Do we want to compete with the google.com?

Of course we do not. We want to become its partner and make use of the huge google.com potential to improve the quality and effectiveness of education.

How to become at least respectable partner of google.com in the e-learning field?

One of the possible ways is to prepare for students interesting materials, full of excitement and search for unknown. These study materials are emiched with links to topic related web pages.

It is no longer enough to create data storage places for .pdf and .doc files. This e-learning stone age is of course better than to give students no materials. But this solution by far does not use the whole potential of the current e-learning.

    How can we change this?

We have to create courses full of interactivity, multimedia elements, animations self tests, discussion forums and wiki modules. We should work together with students who act as a catalyst - they are familiar with ICT technologies and growing up on social networks, open sources, computer games and 3D visualizations; and students also know what they would like to learn. We should also use the help of pedagogically experienced teachers despite their ICT handicap.

Utopia? Empty words? Impossible? For sure not.

    II. OUR JOURNEY TO E-LEARNING

    A. Our first steps We have started to create the first systematic e-leaming

materials for students in 2000. We have used our own interactive web pages for their publication. But our solution did not match the continually growing demands - educational texts, interactive animations, tests, dictionary, friendly service for teachers and also for students. We have decided to create comprehensive e-learning educational materials using CMS MoodIe (Course Management System Modular ObjectOriented Dynamic Learning Environment [1]) in 2004 and we have created an educational portal called "eLearn central". Portal "eLearn central" was located on the server of the Department of Microelectronics (Institute of Electronics and Photonics today) of Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology, Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava and it is accessible through the hyperlink http://ec.elf.stuba.sk.

The first created e-learning materials located on portal "eLearn central" were close-knit with electronic devices and systems. It is very difficult to understand basic principles of electronic devices and systems without good understanding of inner processes in semiconductors. Static pictures and characteristics do not much support students' imagination of such processes. Our ambition was to assist the students in understanding of these processes by using one of great advantages of modem web technology-through interactive animations.

Original interactive animations [2], educational and popularization e-learning courses and modules have been created for portal "eLearn central".

  • The animations were designed in such a way that details of a given object are shown to students and so it will contribute to knowledge obtaining much easier and faster. Fig. 1 shows principal construction of laser diode as part of Flash animation about Laser diode.

    Construction

    Laser diode (LO)

Figure I. Flash animation Laser diode : "Construction" part.

The animations were created by using Adobe Flash tool or by using Adobe Flash software and SPICE (Simulation Program with Integrated Circuits Emphasis). These animations are unique of portal eLeam central and educational modules are the novelty. Authors of these e-learning projects were members of "eLearn central team".

We've built a developing team "eLearn central team" of teachers and students. The teacher-student cooperation has excellent reasons. Teachers are experienced in teaching, they have expert skills, they can find the most appropriate ways how to obtain new knowledge and they have enthusiasm. Students have the necessary software practical skills, they are able to learn quickly how to work with a new programme tools, such as PHP, html, Adobe Flash, they have creativity, new views on a topic, and enthusiasm, as well. We have organized routine meetings, consultations and Flash courses [3].

A very positive experience and outcome was formation of strong student base. Students together helping each other were able to solve some of the software problems. Large benefit of this community can be seen in all created animations. Our new students have used the Flash software and created complicated animations in a very short period of time. They have used prepared animation templates created by their elder colleagues.

We have created our own libraries of symbols, animations, modules, pre-formatted templates, and interactive maps. Work with these libraries clearly simplifies the process of preparing a course. It provides for author general support and effective tool for creating courses. However it is only a backbone ensuring the formal level of the course. The quality is always determined by the content and the context created by the author.

    978-1-4577-1747-5/11/$26.00 2011 IEEE

We have created options for users' feedback. We provide free access to our e-learning projects, which are positively rated by students. It is also one of the reasons why some students have joined our projects and have taken their share in our work.

    B. Today Today we are working with three portals called "eLearn

    central".

The first is primary portal "eLearn central" created in 2004, accessible through the hyperlink http://ec.elfstuba.sk. The current version of this portal "eLearn central" uses a CMS Moodie 1.9. 18 groups of courses, for example "FREE", "Electronics", "Renewable energy sources", "Team projects", "Individual projects", have been designed and located on this portal. More than 180 courses have been developed and implemented in the distance and blended learning at our University, in the popularization of Science and Technology between kids and young people and for team work in everyday business life. More than 2500 users are registered here. Users have free access; free access with registration required; or need access key to enter some specific courses.

The second is portal-journal "eLearn central" created in June 2011, accessible through the hyperlink: http://kme.elfstuba.sklelearn. The current version of this portal "eLearn central" uses also a CMS Moodie 1.9. 9 groups of specialization, for example "Electronics and Photonics", "Computer Science and Mathematics", "Electrical Engineering", "Languages", were designed and located on this portal. Only four courses have been developed until today. Everyone who is interested in any topic of published courses can access the portal-journal "eLearn central" (free access, but only for registered users). One interesting feature of this portal-journal is integrated template. This template acts as a support to create courses-the authoring tool for authors with no further experience in creating professional e-leaming educational materials. The author has very intuitive and easy-to-use tool to prepare quality e-learning materials with good technical background.

The third is educational portal "eLearn central" created in June 2011, accessible through the hyperlink: http://kme.elfstuba.sklmoodle. The current version of this portal "eLearn central" uses a CMS Moodie 2. This portal is assigned primarily for implementation in the distance and blended learning at our University. We will develop new courses for this portal and also we will update existing courses from the portal "eLearn central" accessible on URL http://ec.elfstuba.sk and transfer them to portal "eLearn central" on the URL: http://kn1e.elf stuba.sklmoodle.

  • III. COURSES ON "ELEARN CENTRAL"

More than 150 courses have been developed for "eLeam central" aforesaid. These courses are in four basic courses types:

    A. The libraries of e-Iearning source The libraries of e-leaming source are storage places with

free access of created e-leaming material divided into modules. Each module represents one defined topic. These modules are exploited by all types of courses allocated on the portal

    "eLeam central".

We have created for example library of interactive animations "Interactive flash animations" [2] which includes more than 30 interactive animations. These animations present the inner processes in semiconductors and electronic circuits: passive devices, diodes and transistors and their usage in electronic circuits, examples of planar technology produced diodes, bipolar junction transistor and CMOS gate, storage media, digital circuits and gates. Fig. 2 shows introduction part of the latest animation about CMOS.

    Oxide

Figure 2. Flash animation CMOS: "Introduction to CMOS".

The other example is still evolving library of educational and popularization modules with appointed topic. The educational content of these modules is delivered m a very motivational and demonstrative way to capture students' attention and to awake their interest. For example, "Photodiode" in course "Optoelectronics and microwave engineering" [4] is an educational module for university students. Fig. 3 shows the module's "Photodiode" intro preview. This module consists of educational text in SCORM package and interactive animation about photodiode's operating principle. Notable part of some modules includes selftests, dictionary etc. Fig. 4 displays educational text preview of module "Photodiode".

"The energy of the most beautiful star" is a popularization module about sunlight for youth [5]. This module is part of a course

"The secret world of renewable source of energy" [6].

Fig. 5 shows view on another part of this course - the education and popularization module "Sun in network". This module is about basic principles and applications of photodiodes as solar cells, which was created from education module "Photodiode".

  • B. The standard self contained e-learning course The standard self contained e-learning course development

requires comprehensive study of e-learning materials. It is very demanding and time consuming. For example, our "eLearn central team" has developed a standard course

"Electronics devices and circuits" [7]. This extensive course

includes 1 0 lessons, 32 interactive animations, glossary with more than 300 terms and a number of hypertext references [8]. A single lesson gives the basic principle definitions and terms connected with electronic devices and circuits to students in the second year of their Bachelor study at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology. These lessons were converted into SCORM packages (Shareable Content Object Reference Model [9]). The lessons have been supplemented by interactive self testing modules. This course mainly serves our students in the second year of their Bachelor study as an alternative source of information. But everyone who is interested in this topic can access the "Electronic devices and circuits" course (free access, but only for registered users). Fig. 6 displays two lessons of a standard course

    "Electronics

devices and circuits" - student's view.

    C. One-shot courses One shot courses usually serve as a support of practical

laboratory exercises and have been named as fast courses,

    978-1-4577-1747-5/11/$26.00 2011 IEEE

because: we can usually create this type of course in CMS MoodIe in a very short time. Students and teachers are using these courses notably for communication and adding information, to transfer files and new information quickly. It is very easy to make changes in such type of course. The course can either be used only for one occasion or can be updated regularly.

    For example, the course "

Electronics devices 2011", includes lectures, lessons, interactive animations, a guide for practical laboratory exercises, self-tests, news forum and discussion forums.

    D. Project courses

    The courses "

Team Projects" and "Individual projects" are a shared workspace for students in team projects and individual projects. This form of study takes advantage of all possibilities of course management system (e.g. the courses m course category "Team projects ZS 20lO/2011").

IV. FEATURES OF COURSES ON "ELEARN CENTRAL"

    A. Educational text We have usually used SCORM package for presentation of

educational text on the portal "eLearn central", but lately also web pages created in CMS MoodIe or our templates integrated to MoodIe. Fig. 7 shows one page of course created in our template. SCORM packages have been developed using THESIS Professional software. We also use PDF format for printed form - educational material available for downloading by students.

  • D. Self tests

The lessons in our courses have been supplemented by open interactive self-testing modules. Quizzes were created in Moodie XML format. This editor allows for various question types to be mixed in a single text file and the format also supports Multiple-Choice, line comments, question names, feedback, percentage-weighted grades, etc. Results may be listed in percentages. The best results are stored in user accounts. The quizzes are designed for fast revision of participant knowledge. We recommended preparation of many on-line open quizzes. Don't be afraid of the tests. Our students have the opportunity to prepare online on these quizzes for face to face study. And their results are excellent.

    E. Discussion forums

We use the "News Forum" and Discussion Forum in CMS Moodie as an effective tool for students, student's team, but also for project coordinators and all members of project team -for their communication, sharing ideas, information retrieval and solving problems [10].

Forum in Moodie is a proper tool for goal analysis, communication and solution search, specifically for team projects.

For example the main mission of forums in educational course "Electronic Devices" is the increase of motivation to study subject "Electronic Device". Our students have prepared the study material and gave it for free use to their study colleagues via these forums. The study material features with high level of interestingness and topicality.

    F. Language of courses Our every e-learning project and courses are in Slovak.

Some of them were prepared in two language versions; Slovak and English (e.g. course Electronic devices and circuits, and more twelve animations).

    V. COURSES IMPLEMENTATION

The courses and e-learning projects located on educational portal "eLearn central" are successfully implemented in education process on Dept. of Microelectronic (Institute of Electronics and Photonics today) since 2005.

These courses mainly serve students at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology as an alternative source of information and support used in:

a blended form of study since 2005 (face to face and elearning).

    a distance study since 2006

the popularization of Science and Technology between kids and young people since 2009

    students team work since 2005

    VI. CONCLUSION

e-learning technology and the amount of information are evolving rapidly. While e-learning courses that were excellent five years ago are now only average and often outdated. It is necessary to renew these courses and education modules following new guidelines - focusing on social networks technology, web 2.0 or personal workplace. We need also to update regularly the content of these materials.

We have decided for radical solution - to build up a brand new portal based on the newest Moodie version. We will prepare new courses for this portal following the latest e-learning know-how and standards. We will also update existing courses from our previous portal "eLearn central" (http://ec.elf.stuba.sk), transfer them to new portal "eLearn central" (http://kme.elf.stuba.sklmoodle) where they will undergo the review process by specialists in given fields to be published. Fig 12 shows the new "eLearn central" portal prevIew.

There is also one big challenge - to train new authors and new students for active use of e-learning technology. To fulfill this vision we have created portal-journal with integrated template for preparing new courses (http://kme.elf.stuba.sklelearn). In this way we create space for creative work, interconnecting our long-term e-leaming experience and pedagogical preferences of authors with little ICT skills.

All new authors are welcome in our e-learning family- only a quick formal registration is needed.

You can start to create new courses now:

    http://kme.elf.stuba.sklelearn.

To ensure the required quality of presented courses, the review process is automatically implemented. All published courses are free to access for registered users to provide quality education for everyone interested and for further portal growth and development.

The e-learning has a huge potential as a motivational and effective tool for acquiring knowledge in an enjoyable way. We're preparing a starting place on educational portal called
