CTA Red Line changesby Nicole Weddington

In an effort to provide faster commutes, the CTA began their five-month reconstruction of the Red Line on May 19. The project, which entails rebuilding the tracks from Cermak-Chinatown to 95th/Dan Ryan, will be the first replacement of those tracks in 40 years. The Garfield, 63rd and 87th stations will receive new elevators, making all stations on the South Side Red Line accessible.

The CTA will be providing five free shuttle buses for riders to connect to their stops that are closed, as well as allowing customers at 69th, 79th, 87th and 95th streets to board Red and Green Line trains for free at the Garfield elevated station. CTA will also offer a 50-cent discount on bus rides along bus routes south of 63rd Street during this time.

The work is part of Mayor Emanuel’s Build-ing a New Chicago program that focuses on improving the infrastructure of the city.

From the Office of the City Clerk Susana A. Mendoza

Chicago City Clerk Susana A. Mendoza an-nounced at a press conference on Wednes-day, May 22, the official start of the 2013-2014 Chicago City Vehicle Sticker sales season.

“We’re proud to roll out the 2013-2014 Chi-cago City Vehicle Sticker sales season almost two weeks before the traditional June 1 start date. All of our systems are up and running. There are more than 1.3 million renewal forms now in the postal system and you should ex-pect to find a renewal form in your mailbox in the coming days,” she said.

Prices have not changed. All seniors 65 years old and older also qualify for their se-nior discount, as they have in years past, Clerk Mendoza said.

There is one major difference between this

year and previous sales seasons: this year, residents should bring their renewal form with them when they purchase a Chicago City Vehicle Sticker in person at a Chicago City Clerk Office or other in person sales loca-tions, Clerk Mendoza said.

That’s because the renewal form includes VIN data — or Vehicle Identification Number data — a requirement for completing your transaction. You can also bring one of three other approved forms of VIN documentation to make an in-person purchase. Accepted forms of approved VIN documentation — in addition to the renewal form — include vehicle registration, insurance card displaying VIN or vehicle title.

“For the first time ever, we are using VIN data to match you to your vehicle. This is an anti-fraud measure and it will help us ensure we have the most accurate data at our dis-

posal to better serve you. It will also allow us to assign your new renewal month once our Office implements Year-Round Sales in 2014,” Clerk Mendoza said.

This year’s sales season marks the last time residents will purchase Chicago City Ve-hicle Stickers from June-to-June. Year-Round Sales are set to begin in June 2014.

Residents can complete mailed renewal forms and return them via the US Postal Ser-vice upon receipt. Chicago City Clerk Offices, Department of Finance Offices and more than 450 community vendors, are ready to help customers complete their Chicago City Vehicle Sticker purchase.

Stickers are valid upon purchase and they can be displayed on your vehicle’s windshield immediately. The 2012-2013 Chicago City Ve-hicle Stickers expire June 30, but the Chicago City Clerk’s Office will again provide a grace period of two weeks.

To avoid late fees, residents must purchase and display their Chicago City Vehicle Stick-ers by July 15.

by Nikoleta Morales

The Puerto Rican Day Parade was cre-ated and started 47 years ago. The parade was traditionally celebrated

in downtown Chicago. This year the tradition was broken – there will be no Puerto Rican Pa-rade in downtown.

The Puerto Rican Parade Committee is join-ing forces with the Puerto Rican Cultural Center to celebrate this year’s theme “Promoviendo nuestra cultura y comunidad”. The 48th Puerto Rican Day Parade and the 35th Puerto Rican People’s Parade will become one this year. The parade will take place on June 15 at noon, starting on Division Street and Western Avenue and will proceed west on Division to Humboldt Park. The fest is sponsored by the Puerto Rican Parade Committee and is produced by Special Events Management.

“The downtown parade lost a lot of money in the last couple of years; it had low atten-dance, and parking was expensive. The idea was to find a way so that the parade will pay

for itself. Merging the two parades together will bring more participants for the floats and will generate more money and sponsorships, and will break even,” said Hank Zemola, own-er of Special Events Management in Chicago. “The Puerto Rican community is along Divi-sion and Humboldt Park; why would you take people away from the neighborhood? This way it will be in the neighborhood. It will help the businesses on Division Street.”

According to Zemola, an initial meeting was held in February this year between Alderman Roberto Maldonado, Special Events Manage-ment, the Puerto Rican Parade Committee and the Puerto Rican Cultural Center, where the merger was discussed. Alderman Maldo-nado acknowledged his presence at the meet-ing and said: “I was present at the meeting. I didn’t make them do this. It was a joint deci-sion between the Puerto Rican Parade Com-mittee and the Puerto Rican Cultural Center, a joined force to promote our parade and in the heart of our community.” According to Zemola, the actual decision was made at a

subsequent meeting between the two Puerto Rican organizations as they wanted to “talk to the community” about this first.

“The participation has been decreased sub-stantially in downtown. It will be great to have one big massive parade on Division Street. I also think it will be a big boost for the local economy,” added Maldonado.

“I think they are heading the right way. If you look over the five years at both events, the one at Division was much larger. The one downtown was a lot more expensive. I really think having the groups together is a good ex-perience without losing money and will help the festivities,” said Zemola.

Currently the Puerto Rican Parade Com-mittee of Chicago is undergoing a lawsuit for a misrepresentation of funds and “illegal” cre-ation of bylaws to elect the current president Angel “Tito” Medina for another four years of term. As of now, their motion to dismiss the case was denied and is set for preliminary in-junction hearing on July 15. “Tito Medina has never been appointed president by any board after his term ran out so he is staying without bylaws. We believe a lot of stuff was misspent. He may have canceled the parade,” said the Plaintiff’s attorney Peter Bustamente.

According to one of the Plaintiffs, Leoncio Vazquez, president and CEO of the Spanish Action

Committee of Chicago, “he [Medina] canceled the annual parade that takes place downtown…Our parade was well known in the world and showed great representation of Puerto Ricans in the city. As Puerto Ricans we are outraged and this is a lack of respect for our pioneers.”

“They make excuses that there is no mon-ey. The PR parade has always been on a tight budget. What happened is that the people that ran the parade this year have no knowledge of budgeting. They don’t know how to spend the money,” said Julio Cruz, an ex-vice president of the Puerto Rican Parade Committee.

As of now the Puerto Rican festival is scheduled to take place on June 13-16 in the Humboldt park area. The annual Miss Puerto Rico pageant has been canceled this year due to “lack of participants,” said Jackie Baez, ad-ministrative director for the Puerto Rican Pa-rade Committee. Last year’s winner, Priscilla Perez, will remain the 2013-14 Miss Puerto Rico queen. In addition, the annual Puerto Rican parade marathon has been canceled due to “cost efficiency,” said Zemola. The tra-ditional Juvenile Queen pageant, the partici-pation of Puerto Rican bands and singers, as well as the traditional floats, will still be part of this year’s festivities.

Michigan.

Whenever I’m in the mood for a new outfit, I don’t go to some fancy, overpriced Michigan Avenue boutique where all of the clothes are randomly mixed together, and I have to walk around the store five times just to find some blue jeans. Instead, I go thrifting—I shop at thrift stores. I know it’s a complete one eighty, going from the chic high-end boutique to a second hand shop but thrift stores have their own unique brand of chic that is definitely worth checking out.

Crossroads Trading Co.2711 N. Clark St. in Lincoln Park I first got into thrifting when I walked in

Crossroads Trading Co. The atmosphere is very cool, with yellow cocktail music playing in the background. I felt like I was sliding down a perfectly organized rainbow of cotton, ray-on, and silk, and straight into a pot of gold,

only the gold had been replaced with designer handbags and shoes that would make Carrie Bradshaw go “gaga.” What would really make her and several other women go even more “gaga” is that everything is at a bargain price, so much so that everything in those Michigan Avenue boutiques is put to shame.

The Bottom Line1236 S. Halsted in University VillageThe Bottom Line doesn’t quite have the

same effect as Crossroads Trading Co. Rather than an Eden of hand-me-downs; it is a consignment club house with a whole room dedicated to shoes. Eat your heart out Miss Bradshaw! The bride-to-be pass-ing by might see the wedding dress on the mannequin and think ‘I should probably get my wedding dress, since I’m getting mar-ried next weekend! But I should probably check out the shoes in the window first!’ And who could blame her? For those prices,

she could buy two pairs, the fashion-

able pumps for the wedding and the comfy ballet flats to wear at her re-ception.

Unique ThriftStore

3000 S. Halsted in BridgeportUnique Thrift Store lives up to its name,

acting as a resale warehouse. There may not be a whole room dedicated to shoes (bum-mer!) but there is a whole clothing section dedicated to men’s, women’s and children’s clothing, creating the ambiance of Resale R US. The kids will be so excited about their “new” clothes, they will forget about the play-house that caught their eye on the way in. With Unique Thrift Stores, everybody wins, and everybody can enjoy a family dinner in peace. n

Mazatlán is a sensory fusion combining everything imaginable and much more in an exotic vacation getaway. The magical experi-ence of Mazatlán will make it your ideal desti-nation. Mazatlán is a way of life that will draw you back again and again to savor its vast pal-ette of fun, relaxation and adventure.

Beaches in MazatlánAmong Mazatlán’s natural wonders are

its spectacular beaches, which are unique to the Mexican Riviera: Playa Norte, Playa Gaviotas and Playa del Camaron, among its most exquisite. Relax with a book or work on your tan, immersed in the soft murmur of waves gently lapping the shore. Should you feel the urge to get into the swim of things, take a cool dip in the clear blue sea, or try windsurfing.

As the sun slowly melts into the Pa-cific, streaking pink and orange radi-ance along the horizon, you’ll have an idyllic setting for a sunset walk on golden sands, or a moonlit stroll along Mazatlán’s romantic oceanfront. Surfing enthusiasts will find their “endless sum-mer” at Playa Olas Altas, Playa Pinitos and Playa Brujas.

You might want the relaxing, reflective am-bience of your very own island: Isla de Vena-dos, which is an inimitable experience, offer-ing the secluded tranquility of pristine beach and a spectacular view of Mazatlán from an island shore, and only minutes away by boat or kayak.

Isla de la Piedra, includes an exotic day cruise to a seamless stretch of crystal sand beach, amidst stunning rock formations jut-ting from the sea.

Points of interest

The LighthouseBuilt in 1879 and towering 157 meters above

the sea, El Faro is one of the tallest natural lighthouses in the world. Your aerobic ascent to the lighthouse summit will definitely beat Pilates for exercise; every step of your climb is a fascinating vista of the hilltop’s flowering plant life.

AquariumThe Mazatlán Aquarium features a daz-

zling collection of exotic sea life, diverse aquatic species on display in 51 saltwater and freshwater tanks. The aquarium includes an aquatic theater with live shows, where the superstars are teams of dolphins perform-ing amazing acrobatic exercises, as well as an undersea museum and spectacular bo-tanical garden.

MaleconMazatlán’s majestic ocean walk, the Male-

con, is one of the longest in the world, flank-ing over four miles of glittering ocean shore-line. Whether you travel the Malecon by foot, bike or “pulmonia” (Mazatlán’s unique open-air taxis), you’ll admire along your way the fascinating stone sculptures rendered by local artists, which depict the port’s colorful cultural history. You’ll also discover breath-taking cliffs, palapa (palm roof) eateries and handcrafts, as well as hotels and fine restau-rants. But wherever you are on the Malecon, the panoramic view of the Mazatlán coastline and bay is truly spellbinding.

The CathedralBuilt in the 1800’s, the Mazatlán Cathedral,

located in the Plazuela Republic Square, is the largest religious structure in the city. Resplen-dent with Gothic art accented by neoclassical

influences and magnificent vaulting towers, the Cathedral is an awe-inspiring presence of singu-lar design, whose crowning effect is its grand organ, built in Paris by Aristide Cavaillie-Coll.

Mazatlán International CenterThe Mazatlán International Center, built

in 2009, is the city’s modern nerve center for business activities, with a 17-room-lay-

out. The largest room accommodates up to 3,876 people. For events, the Center also provides extensive open areas. The build-ing’s exterior is distinctive for its extraor-dinary mural wall, which is composed of sculpture-painting, ceramics, ironwork and stand has been recognized by the Guinness World Records as the largest in its category.

La semana pasada, “Emanuel and the Truth About Fishes” fue adquirida por Tribeca Film y Well Go USA Entertainment.

by Kiko Martinez

Having already shared the screen with Oscar-nominated actresses such as Vera Farmiga (“Up in the Air”) and Sharon Stone (“Casino”), Mexican actress Olga Segura decided to see what it would be like to work behind the camera as an ex-ecutive producer on the film “Emanuel and the Truth About Fishes.” In the psy-chological thriller, which debuted at the Sundance Film Festival in January, a young woman (Kaya Scodelario) becomes obsessed with her neighbor (Jessica Biel), who looks like her deceased mother. Last week, “Emanuel and the Truth About Fish-es” was acquired by Tribeca Film and Well Go USA Entertainment. It is scheduled for a limited release in theaters later this year

and will also be available On Demand.

EXTRA: How does it feel to be on the other side of the camera as a producer?Olga Segura: It was a lot of fun. I really got involved in this film during post-pro-duction. I think that’s where you really fi-nalize a movie. I went through the process with [director] Francesca Gregorini, who is a very good friend of mine. She is very talented.Along with your friendship with Fran-cesca, what else was it about the film that made you want to be a part of it?

The story is amazing. It’s a rollercoaster of feelings. There is a lot of comedy and suspense. A lot of unsuspected things happen. The cast is amazing. It’s a very original story.

As an actress, you are very new to the film industry. Your first movie, “Cell-mates” with Tom Sizemore (“Saving Pri-vate Ryan”), was in 2011 and you’ve com-pleted four others since then. Have you made the move to Hollywood from your hometown of Mexico City yet to pursue more opportunities?

Yes, after “Cellmates” I took that op-portunity. I wanted to move to Hollywood so I could start working on more projects and make it as an actress. I was nobody in Mexico, so I thought I might as well try it in the U.S. I think I’ve made a good deci-sion. Who knows what would’ve happened if I stayed in Mexico. Right now I’m pretty happy. Now that you are in the U.S., do you think you will do any projects in Mexico?

Yes, I think I will do even more in Mexi-co. I want to bring more production com-panies to Mexico. We have amazing actors and producers and directors. We are very talented. I think [producers] need to con-sider shooting in Mexico more often. n

On May 17, Miller Lite and the Confederation of North, Central America and the Carib-bean Association Football (CONCACAF) kicked-off the Gold Cup celebrations by unveiling the newly designed CONCACAF Gold Cup trophy, at Chicago’s Merenderos San Marcos. Mexican international soccer player, Pável Pardo, took part in the ceremony, as well as Alberto Fer-rias, brand manager of Miller Lite Hispanic.

“Miller Lite is really proud to be the official beer sponsor of the Gold Cup. We have been sponsoring this event for the past eight years. We are as excited as we were eight years ago. It was a big testament on how the consumers were enjoying the cup. This is a new design. This is the first time we are using this trophy. They did a great job with the design. It’s a bit smaller. It has the countries and the years that they won,” said Ferrias.

“The Gold Cup is very important because if you want to win you have to play. The fans are waiting for the Mexico finals. I know the fans in Chicago. They like winners. Chicago is a win-ner city. They want to watch Mexico in the finals,” said Pardo.

The Chicago Rush has been dealing with numerous financial and organizational is-sues over the last few months. When the AFL suspended the 2009 season, the original owners put the team up for sale.

When no suitable buyer was found, the AFL took control of the franchise and op-erated it through the conclusion of the 2012 season. During this past off-season, the league decided to sell the Rush as they no longer wanted to deal with the op-erating expenses.

In November of 2012, a Chicago area businesswoman, Julee White, purchased the team for an undisclosed amount. The league took away her ownership in Janu-ary of this year and reassumed control of the franchise.

Although no official reason was given for White’s departure, Crain’s Chicago Business reported that she allegedly didn’t have the funds to operate the team. One month later, David Staral Jr., another local business owner, purchased the team and all appeared well with the franchise.

On May 6, the Chicago Sun-Times re-ported that the AFL had once again seized ownership of the team on April 29. It turns out that Staral is $1.5 million in debt to 60

different creditors. He is also currently on probation for a 2011 conviction on state benefits fraud and had previous convic-tions for embezzlement and other finan-cial improprieties. Then it was revealed that Staral had not paid team employees in weeks.

The team fell behind on arena and game day expenses and Staral stopped appear-ing at games, practices and team events. There are reports that the Rush will leave Rosemont and play their remaining home games in Rockford due to the recent rev-elations. The Rush already planned two games at Rockford’s Metro Center due to scheduling conflicts with the Allstate Are-na. The league has refused to comment on those reports while the team is just going about business as usual.

“I have no control over what happens beyond the football field,” said Rush Head Coach Bob McMillen. But if the Rush do indeed leave the building they’ve called home for 12 years, it could put the future of this proud organization in serious jeop-ardy. n
