VATICAN CITY (NC) - Attheir first meeting, Pope PaulVI told American ArchbishopDonald Coggan of Canterburythat he would 'like the AnglicanChurch to be "united with butnot absorbed" by the RomanCatholic Church. After the twoemerged from 85 minutes oftalks, the Pope told the 65-yearold archbishop of Canterburythat the pace of the AnglicanCatholic dialogue "has quickened -marvelously in recentyears so that these words ofhope, 'the Anglican Church united, not absorbed,' are no longer a mere dream."

On the same day, as the Vatican's • top ecumenical officiallistened, Archbishop Coggen declared at a ceremony in Rome'sAnglican Church that the timehas come to grant official permission for· intercommunicationbetween Anglicans and Catholics. "Has not the time now arrived when we have reachedsuch a measure of agreement onso many of the fundamentals ofthe Gospel that a relationshipof shared Communion can be encouraged by the leadership ofboth Churches?" he asked.

EDITORRev. John F. Moore, M.A.

Young strikers picket their school . . . The facultyis on strike . . . From a passing glance the cause isnot clear ... but there is some hurt ... alleged injustice... These young persons take to the streets in protest.

They are' a reminder to us all ... of the value ofjustice ... Like thousands before them these fourare willing to fight for it ... risk for it suffer forit . . . Injustice screams out for committed protest.

Justice is perhaps the most basic requisite for harmonious human interaction . . . It is the foundationstone of society ... Moral life rests on justice ... asthe primordial expression of love ... To consider oneself loving ... or devout ... without acting justly ...is self deceit.

The Hebrew prophet Micah sums up the JudeoChristian conviction . . . "This is what God asks ofyou ... only this . . . to act justly . . . to love tenderly... and to walk humbly with God." (Micah 6:8).

All the prophets of Israel ...and Christianity ...shared that ideal ... They stood up to even the mostpowerful . . . and protested . . . "Right is repelled . . .and justice stands far off ... Make justice your aim ...redress the wronged." (Isaiah 59:15; 1:16).

Back to FundamentalsDuring the course of his address to the CathoLic Press

Association George Gallup Jr. of the Gallup Poll organization noted that there exists a serious problem with all newspapers, religious and secular, concerning young readers.According to his findings, only about 45 percent of peopleunder 25 years of age read any newspaper at any giventi~e on a regular basis. I

One of the fundamental reasons for this decline innewspaper reading, again gleaned from Gallup sources,is that many people in this group cannot read. Furtherindications are that there is a general decline not only inreading but· also in writing and spelling ability amonga 'large' segJ;Ilent of today's youth. College entrance andplacement exams give support to the Gallup report. Over, the past few years there has been a steady decline in testsourc~sacross the nation.

'This is indeed a sad commentary, not only on oureducational institutions but also on our entire socio-culturaldevelopment. Since many of our schools have becomemere babysitting institutions, where teaching for all practical purposes has become a lost art, students seeminglydetermine what they want to do as far as curriculum isconcerned.

Many dedicated teachers just cannot teach. Parentalpermissiveness, together with some questionable legal attitudes, has limited teachers' ability to be an effective instrument in the transmission of knowledge. Instead of beingable to teach, many teachers find themselves merely patrolling classrooms. The results are only too obvious.

Of course, some educators themselves have also addedto the learning problems that many of our schools nowface. Many educators have a unique gift of hopping aboardevery new educational theory that comes down the corridor. One year it's open classrooms: the following year the classroom closes: Some students are left to "float" from onegrade level to another while others are left to sink to thebottom. This instability of educational theory has made itsown contribution to the decline of student performance.

, If weare to restore some semblance of reality to theworld of education, it would seem that many schools shouldonce more return to the classroom some of the basic andfundamental concepts that will give students the opportunity and encouragement to learn. Young people should betaught to read. Time and effort s~ould be devoted to the,art of writing. Above all, it would be most encouragingif we could help young people learn to speak the Englishlanguage. Present u~age defies definition!

Hopefully we will begin not only to realize the scopeof the learning problem at hand but also utilize our manywonderful educational tools to eliminate the growing ignorance that is presently plaguing our classrooms.

As' our own diocesan educational convention openstoday, it ,would be well if this pressing probleIl\ would insome fashion find a willing ear so that even in our ownparochial schools the reality of fundamentals will not betaken for granted.

Communion in the HandAs the Catholic Bishops of the United States meet

this week to consider once more the problems of the Churchin this country, hopefully they might consider a simpleitem that has been blown out of all proportion, namely"communion in the hand."

At the present time the United States and Italy arebasically the only two western nations where communionis not given in the hand. The Bishop of Rome, the Pope,is an exception insofar as he distributes communion inthis manner in the State of the Vatican (which is not Italy).Even the Bishops of Ireland have approved such a move fortheir very traditional church.

For the American Bishops to delay any longer inthis m'!.tter would truly be ignoring the consensus of otherepiscopal conferences throughout the world, never mindingthe fact that such a delay would once more place them ina very shortsighted position.

Father Fitzgerald, who is alsothe Director of Pastoral Care atSt. Anne's Hospital, sees therole of the new ministry as asign of the ever-present soliCitude that the Church has forthose who are suffering throughillness. The ministry of FatherCarter and Father Gomes whichis supported by the Diocese canbe a vital link in the Church'smission to reach out to all itsmembers in time of need. Theministry of hospital chaplain isone that touches the lives ofpeople at some of the mostcritical moments of life, namelybirth, sickness and death. Thechaplain through prayer, presence and sacrament brings

Describing the American Irishas "Great Ireland," FatherGreeley noted in his addressthat actuaIly there are moreIrish Protestants than IrishCatholics in this country, butthat little is known sociologicaIly of the Protestants.

He said that American Irishare "the most affluent and besteducated of the gentile ethnicgroups in the United States. We've made it and made it big."

He added, however, that American Irish and Irish Irish donot share a cultural heritage, that their patrimony diverged100 years ago, when most emigration took place. "Today'sIrish are amazed at our lack of

by early Christian missioners ofan already existing Irish pagansun-sign.

"The missioners were ~ble to'baptize' all the pagan symbolsand rites," he said. "There wasnothing cruel or opposed toChristianity in the Celtic tradition."

One of the priest's most recent publications is an Irishbased book for smaIl childrenand soon to be issued is a threevolume trilogy of novels whichwill bring the royal O'NeilIs ofIreland through 1600 years ofhistory, from the sixth to the22nd century. His own biography, "The Public Life of AndrewGreeley," is due for faIl publication.

"My sister teIls me I onlyreaIly became Irish in 1965," headmitted to the Bridgewater audience. "That was when Istarted examining my heritage."He has worked hard at it sincethat time and one of his current sociological projects at theNational Opinion Research Center of Chicago, where he is program director, is an investigation of alcohol behavior amongAmerican ethnic groups, including Irish, Italians and Poles.

One of his findings is thatthere is more alcoholism amongAmerican Irish than among IrishIrish, "because it is more tolerated here than there."

Not attached to any parish,Father Greeley ne'llerthelesssays Mass for a congregationof "five or six" on Saturdayafternoons when he is in Chiago. The parish, he explained,is a victim of urban decay andalthough it has a flourishingschool, its actual members arevery few.

Despite such situations, he isgeneraIly hopeful about the

Fr. Greeley in Fine FormAt Bridgewater Lecture

By Pat McGowan

Father Andrew Greeley, 49,feisty Irish leprechaun and committed priest-sociologist, was atBridgewater State CoIlege lastweek, mostly to talk about thestatus of Irish-Americans (verygood), but also to discuss asampling of the dizzying numberof projects with which he ispresently concerned.

In an interview before histalk to students and faculty ofthe state coIlege, he darted fromtopic to topic in the style familiar to readers of his Anchorcolumn.

Asked how the "Greeley machine" produces weekly columns for 50 secular and 40 Catholic papers, has seemingly itsown book-of-the-month clubwith a total of over 60. "I'm notsure of the number; I don't keepcount") books bearing the Greeley name, writes uncounted articles for magazines rangingfrom scholarly to pop, surfacesall over the world for lectures, workshops and seminars, andmaintains full time commitmentto sociological research, the leprechaun had a succinct answer.

"I work hard."In the next breath he added

"But I don't work evenings orSundays, I get eight hours sleepand I take July and August offfor swimming and sailing. Inwinter I ski."

It's what's caIled an Irish bull.Father Greeley has a sister,

theologian Dr. Mary Durkin, who, like himself, was a speakerat last month's National Catholic Educational Assn. convention in San Francisco. Does sheshare his views?

"I share hers," demurely declared the outspoken proponentof ordination for women.

Father Greeley would also liketo see women share the permanent diaconate. He said theorder had been restored for several years in his native Chicagoarchdiocese and that thus farthe chief problem has been that"although they're clergy theyare still treated as laymen."

On the Catholic press, whichat the Catholic Press Association national convention, hasjust named him best syndicatedcolumnist, he said that althoughhe did not see a wide enoughrange of diocesan papers tomake a general statement, hisfeeling was that "some are verygood and most exhibit a higherlevel of professionalism than inthe past - including, of course, all those that carry my column."

He added that he felt in general that the relationship of bishops to their diocesan pubilca-'tions needs articulation.

Asked his reaction to a com·ment by another Catholic editorthat Vatican officials supportedGreeley findings when theyagreed with Roman conclusions, but considered him a non-person when, for example, he reported opposition by AmericanCatholics to papal teachings onbirth control, the controversialsociologist chuckled.

"They're not the only oneswho do that," he aIlowed.

Not in clerical attire, "because I'm in more of an academic than a priest's role tonight - and anyway I onlyhave one black shirt," FatherGreeley nevertheless proudlywore a St. Brigid cross whichhe explained as an adaptation
