Break a leg in Goochland and your trip to the emergency room may soon be a lot faster, with the opening last Thursday of the West Creek Emergency Center.

JSR Horticulture student Kevin Cook moves some coleus last Saturday at the plant sale which was part of the eighth annual Garden Fest sponsored by the Goochland-Powhatan Master Gardeners Association, which featured gardening classes and demonstrations as well as plant sales which benefited the JSR Horticulture Club and the Horticulture program at the college.

Master Gardeners, J. Sargeant Reynolds hold 8th Annual Garden Fest

By Ken [email protected]

About 110 eager students turned out for classes at the J. Sargeant Reynolds Goochland Campus during Saturday’s eighth annual Garden Fest, sponsored by the Goochland-Powhatan Master Gardeners Association.

Despite a mid-day rain shower, the event also drew hundreds of shoppers for the plant sales and demonstrations at the celebration of horticulture.

Organizer Linda Toler said there were more vendors, about 20, than ever before and students came from near and far.

“People in the classes came from Northern Virginia as well as area counties,” she said.

One of the most popular events was a workshop on building Hypertufa Troughs, a type of lightweight, artificial stone with the look of real stone used to grow plants

that need good drainage.Other class topics included container

gardening with succulents, rain gardens, attracting hummingbirds and help in deciding what kind of greenhouse to buy if you are in the market for one.

Toler displayed a new project this year, a collaborative effort between the Master Gardeners and JSR on a vegetable gar-den which will send all its product to the Goochland Food Pantry.

JSR Horticulture Program chief David Seward said the Garden Fest benefits the college by helping with recruiting and fund raising for the horticulture program. It also does something important to the mission of JSR, he said.

“It pulls in the local people,” said Seward, furthering the college’s goal to become a major community center for Goochland.

Anonymous donor to fund debate program?By Ken Odor

[email protected]

Goochland High School students may be able to sharpen their critical think-ing skills next fall in a new forensics and debate pro-gram funded by an anony-mous donor.

Goochland Education Foundation President Elizabeth Nelson-Lyda told the Goochland School Board about the new opportunity at last week’s school board workshop meeting.

The plan envisions a two-year pilot program funded by $66,000 in grant money routed from the donor to The Community Foundation and then to Goochland Schools, explained Nelson-Lyda later in the week.

But as of last week, funds had not yet been received.

“Nothing is a go until the ink is dry and the money is in the bank,” said Nelson-Lyda, who added that she had received verbal assur-ances the money is on the way.

Nelson-Lyda said the donor was interested in high school level critical think-ing programs and a debate team.

When established, the program would be open to students in grades 9 through

12 with a forensics class and a debate class, said Nelson-Lyda., with the ability to han-dle 25 students in each class.

The debate team would compete with other schools

through the Virginia High School League (VHSL) sys-tem.

In action items, the school board approved the Special Education Annual Plan and

the Activity Funds audit unanimously. The board decided to continue using Stephen Wunsh for another year to perform the activity audit.

CEO Patrick Farrell said the center will eventually be sur-rounded by a 97-bed hospital, already approved by the state. Medical office buildings are also planned for the site.

“It’s a big beautiful day,” said Dr. James Bowles Sr., for-mer District 3 supervisor and long a champion of bringing a medical facility to Goochland.

“I’ve been working on this for 15 years,” he said. “I hope they build the hospital here in three to five years. It depends on how this takes off,” said Bowles.

There are no other hospi-tals or walk-in medical centers in the county.

The emergency center includes a trauma/resuscita-tion room, an OB/GYN room and pediatric rooms, along with the ability to perform CT scans, X-ray and ultrasound examinations.

Patients who need to be admitted will be transferred by ambulance to Henrico Doctors’ Hospital or another HCA facility, said Van Sise.

More good economic news

Goochland residents let down by BOS

The Republican and Tea Party mem-bers on the board of supervisors disagree with their party members in Washington and state government, now is not the time to raise taxes. At the 7 p.m. meet-ing on April 17, 2012, they voted to do exactly that.

They voted a back door, double door tax increase to all tax payers of Goochland County. Out one door went thousands of dollars of non impact taxes on schools. In the other door came one of the worst impacts on schools.

Multi-family developments seldom if ever pay their way on schools and

services. The tax payer of Goochland will have to make up the difference in years to come. West Creek with its M-1 zoning was designed to help off-set the cost of schools and services. The door is now wide open for more of the same in the future. This was not a gain as adver-tised; this was a loss for the tax payers of Goochland. The county administra-tor had staff prepare this rezoning case before the county. The tax payers should never have to pay for this service.

This is a responsibility of the appli-cant, not the tax payer. In my opinion the tax payers had their clock cleaned on the ordinance amendment.

School board sets an example on progress

Last night culminated a very interest-ing week for me with respect to county events.

One of my friends from Chesterfield County , who has been heavily involved in their robotics program joined me at our School Board meeting. He was amazed at how both the community and the School Board embraced each other in ways that can only be an advan-tage to our students.

The announcement by the Goochland Educational Foundation of

Monday the talking heads on TV were engaging in a bit of hand wring-ing and wondering if the country was fixing to have another summer economic swoon after a lower than expected GDP report.

But locally things continue to look positive, as last Thursday in Goochland an upbeat group of coun-ty dignitaries joined HCA notables in cutting the ribbon at the West Creek Emergency Center on Tuckahoe Creek Parkway.

The long awaited opening sig-naled yet another positive step in development.

Some noted that there is a mighty big piece of land surrounding the free-standing emergency center, which was scheduled to begin patient treatment Tuesday. That’s because the plan is for a hospital and medical office buildings to join the ER even-tually at the site, fleshing out what many hope will be a revitalized devel-opment area in eastern Goochland.

Then Friday brought word that the county had chosen Matthew Ryan to fill the vacant Director of Economic Development position, another positive step for the county.

As we noted last week, things seem to be taking place in a methodi-cal, step-by-step manner with two boards in place that seem to be able to work together in a positive fashion.

Of course West Creek Emergency Center was to open regardless of who sits on the board of supervisors and indeed former supervisor Dr.. James Bowles, instrumental in pro-

moting the facility was singled out by Henrico Doctors’ Hospital CEO Patrick Farrell for special recognition. Bowles has long championed the idea of a hospital in the county.

More and more, it seems there is reason for cautious optimism once again in the county.

Let the hand-wringers on the business shows worry. Locally, things look to be improving.

Spring and flowers at JSRCC

Maybe it’s just the season that brings out the optimism in folks, for example those visiting the eighth annual Spring Garden Fest sponsored by the Goochland Powhatan Master Gardener Association and hosted by J. Sargeant Reynolds Goochland Campus.

Even though the skies opened around lunchtime and rain drove folks under cover, the event drew a crowd of shoppers and students for the classes and the horticulture program at the college is certainly impressive.

Or maybe it’s the resilient nature of people hereabouts, tired of sev-eral years of negativity and ready for good things to start happening. After awhile, it seems to me, folks get their fill of downbeat talk and the innate optimism of Americans (and Goochlanders) takes over once again.

That’s my theory.

a significant (both in terms of monies and content) grant to our high school, the presentation by the STEM advisory commit-tee and its recommendations , resulted in School Board respons-es of commitment and a rapid appreciation and willingness to get these shows on the road for the county schools.

My friend asked me how this happened, I said, new School Board members, a commitment for community involvement in ways that made believers of all, no posturing, not just talking but doing, in ways that people believed in.

Earlier in the week , a simi-lar atmosphere prevailed when a number of community folks were invited by the school administra-tion to a panel of outside edu-cational experts to address some important issues related to how our school system was doing.

Their preliminary report is due today. Juxtaposing this envi-

ronment with the situation with regard to the TCSD is remark-able. It is clear that the TCSD issues were inherited by the cur-rent BOS and that they are strug-gling mightily to try and resolve this contentious and potentially destructive dilemma. No one wants a Greek tragedy (European analogy), but rumors are ram-pant as to what might occur. The BOS needs to figure out a way, just as the School Board is doing to fully engage the community. What paths have they explored, who else have they spoken with , e.g. experts in this area, have they fully shared their ideas with the community?

With so much at stake , con-tinuing economic pain, mistrust is everywhere. I think that the School Board has shined a bright light on how county activities can best be positioned to yield the best results in a way that is open , obvious and pretty darn positive. Having meetings of substance where decisions are made is a refreshing thing to behold.

Recognizing that the TCSD

issues are very complicated, we have elected people who were sufficiently convincing to the populace to get elected. The issues surrounding our school system are just as complicated but imagination and hard work are prevailing.

Nothing is better than truly embracing the community when the community believes that no special interests are being served other than the citizens of the county.

Richard CarchmanColumbia

Pace

Mary Chandler Pace, passed away on April 24, 2012. She was born on Christmas Eve, Dec. 24, 1926, in Winston-Salem, N.C.

She was the youngest daugh-ter of Ruth and A.B. Chandler. She was preceded in death by her brother, Jim Chandler; and sister, Frances Cherner. She was the beloved wife of Joseph Farrar Pace Sr. (born October 28, 1925, and passed 1996) from Lawrenceville, Va. Mary attended RPI (now VCU) and majored in Art and indulged in a lifelong love of the arts and creating her own paintings and sculptures. In the early 1950s, she worked at WLEE radio, and later Franklin Federal Saving and Loan. While attending college, she met Farrar Sr., a student at Randolph-Macon College, in 1948. They mar-ried in 1954 at Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church, while Farrar Sr. was a supervisor for the State of Virginia Health Department. The following years, she settled into rearing their four boys, while Farrar Sr. started JoPa Company, a swimming pool construction firm in 1958. Raising four boys with love and understanding left little room for her personal pur-suits. However, once they were

older, she became involved in The Woman’s Club, Tuckahoe Woman’s Club, Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Sheltering Arms Hospital, investment club, and Bridge club. All paled in compari-son to her newfound passion for golf at the age of 55 and becoming a member of Hermitage Country Club. The loss of her youngest child, William Alban Pace “Billy,” at the age of 16 in 1980, took the wind from her sails but she managed to rise up in support of her surviving three sons until the sudden death of Farrar Sr. in 1996. She moved from their Goochland farm to Randolph Square and enjoyed many years of golfing and traveling with friends. Visits from sons with expanding families and a calendar full of volunteer-ing and other activities kept her fully occupied until some years later when she was diag-nosed with dementia. She had been living at Westminster Canterbury until her death, due to advanced Alzheimer’s. The family wishes to thank

the staff of Westminster Canterbury for their love and compassion. She is survived by Joseph Farrar Pace Jr. and Anne C. Pace and their three children, Joseph Farrar Pace III, Georgeanne Pace, Belle Pace; David Chandler Pace and Sheryll Anne Pace and their four children, William Pace, Chandler Pace, Austin Pace, Elizabeth Pace; Mark Steven Pace and Margaret W. Pace and their two children, Ellie Pace, Mary Frances Pace, all of whom currently reside in Richmond. She was loved and will be greatly missed by all that knew her infectious fun spirit, kindness, wit and civility. Memorial service was held Friday, April 27, 2012 at Westminster Canterbury. Graveside services were pri-vate. Nelsen Funeral Home and Crematory will be in charge of the arrangements. In lieu of flow-ers, donations can be made to the Billy Pace Memorial Fund, Blue Ridge School, 273 Mayo Drive, Saint George, Va. 22935.

On a recent sunny after-noon, members and friends of the GFWC Goochland Woman’s Club created a Pinwheel Garden in front of the Goochland Family Service building to show support for the GFWC Signature Project - the Domestic Violence Awareness and Prevention Program. The garden will be on display for approximately two weeks.

The public awareness pro-gram seeks to change the way our nation thinks about pre-vention. Using the pinwheel as a symbol for child abuse and neglect prevention nationwide, the campaign focuses on com-munity activities and public policies that prioritize healthy child development and child abuse prevention.

SHERIFF’S REPORTS: Incidents

By Ben OrcuttSpecial Correspondent

At 82, Cecelia Tyler heeded God’s call and went back to school to earn her GED.

On Saturday, the 85-year-old was honored by family and friends at a graduation ceremony

at Antioch Baptist Church for accomplishing her goal.

Following the ceremony, Tyler said her “most wonderful, pre-cious day” was when “the Lord spoke to me and said, ‘Get your GED.’”

Earning her GED “means everything,” Tyler said. During

her youth, she was unable to complete school because she had to work to help her family buy food.

Tyler was accompanied on Saturday by her GED teacher, Joanna Tilley, who she referred to affectionately as her “baby.”

“I have not had a more dedi-cated or harder worker than Cely Tyler,” Tilley said. Tilley said Tyler is a role model for the entire county.

Classes for the GED pro-gram in Goochland are held at the Goochland Free Clinic and Family Services building, Tilley said following the ceremony. Beverly Sill, who is the head of GED programs administered by Cumberland County Adult Education, presented Tyler with her award.

“She is my oldest student,” Tilley added of Tyler. “It’s fantas-tic. She is such a special person.

I’m just so glad that she was able to have this day.”

Tyler’s quest for knowledge has been an inspiration to others. Seth Beck, 22, of Hadensville, said he was inspired by a 2009 article in the Goochland Gazette about Tyler going back to school at the age of 82.

A high school dropout, Beck attended Saturday’s ceremony. Beck said he decided to earn his GED after reading about Tyler in the newspaper.

“I was touched….when I read about her,” Beck said. “82 years old, this lady, you know, it was just remarkable and when I actually met her, you could tell it was something, something, something had touched her.”

Beck’s older brother, Joseph Beck, 23, of Henrico, also was inspired by Tyler to go back to school to earn his GED after dropping out of high school.

Joseph Beck also attended Saturday’s ceremony. Like his brother, Joseph Beck works for guitar case manufacturer TKL, located in the Oilville Business

Park. “My GED made me able

ders two conditions under which its citizens live.

2. The separate district was created to keep the citizens of the county who are not connected to the services from having to pay for the construction and opera-tion even though they approved of its inception and collect the taxes from the homes and busi-nesses.

3. There is no record of citizens approaching the board claiming to be in need of these services. There was no public health problem that had to be addressed.

4. Citizens who have well and septic use health department resources paid for by all county citizens every year. The district users will never have need of these services.

5. The developer, builders and realtors discreetly hide the ad valorem taxes when entering

into negotiations with potential buyers while exalting the low real estate tax rate. Had they come forth with the information up front, there would still be a large number of homes unoccupied.

6. When a citizen purchases a home with their own system, did the county install the system and then look to the owner to pay for it? If so, I can imagine the outcry for the county to fund the project and not tax the home and land. Then, add another tax to pay for the system the county installed and now owns. Homes in the district pay for water and sewer bi-monthly. That fee was and is normal and expected. What is wrong is having the users pay for a system they did not have a voice in creating and to be used to ben-efit the county in attracting com-mercial and industrial businesses.

7. The citizens currently using the TCSD were not the ones responsible for its creation. All the citizens of Goochland County approved the search for money

and agreed to pay for the loans. The Board represented you and gave unanimous approval using the good faith and full credit of the county as collateral.

Maybe instead of all this dickering back and forth, we need to come up with a solu-tion which is fair and equitable to all. Perhaps the system can be continued all the way to the Hanover and Louisa borders. That way everyone will have the opportunity to have access and will all be accountable for its cost ending this feuding mess. This will also serve to open up the entire county to growth and the benefits of increased reve-nue. That way commercial and industrial businesses won’t have to be squeezed into just the land immediately adjacent to Henrico County. Goochland will be per-fectly positioned for the future come what may.

Ron BradyPamela Lane

the courage really and just the gumption to go out and do stuff,” Joseph Beck said. “A weight was just lifted off my shoulders….”

Tyler is the mother of four children. She has eight grand-children and nine great grand-children. Most of her family attended her graduation cer-emony, with several of them telling her how proud they were of her.

Robert Davis, her son-in-law, said that Tyler has made an “indelible mark on Goochland County.”

Davis said Saturday’s cer-emony was a “landmark” occa-sion.

“That is history and we will never forget her,” Davis added.

Tyler sat on the front row of the church and shouted out “halleluiah” at times during the ceremony. She even got up on

one occasion and danced in the spirit.

Joseph Allen Jr., associ-ate pastor at Rising Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Columbia, preached Saturday’s sermon.

“Granny, I just want to say, I love you so, so much,” Allen said to Tyler. “It took a desper-ate and pressing woman to get us here today.”

A God-fearing woman, Tyler is an 18-year breast can-cer survivor.

“Doctor said I had a bad heart, but I gave it to God,” Tyler said following the cer-emony. “I gave my cancer to God.”

Tyler said that if there is any message in her earning her GED it is that all things are possible with God.

“I hope that people will realize that if they put their heart and mind to it, they can accomplish anything through God,” Tyler said. “It’s no failure in God. It’s no shortcoming in

God. If there’s any shortcom-ing, it’s in us.”

Tyler told all of those who attended the ceremony that they will be blessed for com-ing.

“We have to love God and do the right things in order to be blessed and I pray that people here today will say, ‘I can make it with determina-tion,’” Tyler said following the ceremony.

Varanis Tyler, 47, of Goochland, told his mother during the ceremony that he was going back to school to earn his GED.

“It means a great deal that she has accomplished what she wanted to achieve and still having the mindset to carry on,” Varanis Tyler said follow-ing the ceremony. “It means a lot that she can encourage people and give people the wisdom to carry on. She’s just a blessed person and she’s blessing us.”

County’s 100 slots already fi lled

By Ben OrcuttSpecial Correspondent

The Central Virginia Disaster Survivor Day has proved so popular that all 100 Goochland County slots for the Saturday event have been taken, said Haley Ransom, a Goochland paid firefighter/medic.

Saturday’s event will be held from 8 a.m. till noon at Fire Station No. 1, locat-ed at 180 River Road West, Manakin-Sabot.

Goochland County is one of 13 locations that will be participating in the Central Virginia Disaster Survivor Day. The free event is being put on by the Central Virginia Urban Area Security Initiative to educate the public on how to survive natural disasters, as well as other emergency situations.

Ransom said planners for the Goochland event did not anticipate there would be such a demand for the pro-

gram. But, those interested can go to the website www.survivorday.com and try to sign up with another locality or for a future event.

“They can go to the website and where it says, ‘Locality,’ Goochland will be gone because it’s full,” Ransom said. “So there’s the option to check for a future event and they can register for that and then when the next event is planned, they’ll be e-mailed and automatically registered for the next one.”

Ransom said those attend-ing Saturday’s event will learn from presenters in the field how to be prepared for natural disasters such as earthquakes and hurricanes. Attendees will learn basic First Aid, how to clean water, what foods to eat “and how to not burn your house down with your generator….,” Ransom said.

Ransom said she’s looking forward to interacting with those who attend the event, “because so often they call us when it’s the emergency and everybody’s freaking out. And this is a good way to get them prepared for the next time and when everybody’s calm and collected. And

hopefully, they’ll take this….back to their neighbors and share the information they’ve gotten.”

Saturday’s program is being funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Ransom said. The event will be pre-sented in a lecture format, with attendees being able to ask questions, Ransom added.

Registration is slated from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m., Ransom said, with the program beginning at 9 a.m., and continuing until noon. Attendees must stay for the entire program to be eligible to receive a free survivor backpack, Ransom said.

The survivor backpack includes a flashlight, duct tape, tarps, First Aid kit, bat-tery-powered radio, a collaps-ible gallon water jug, emer-gency blankets and ponchos, Ransom said.

The information the pub-lic will receive will be state-of-the-art, Ransom added.

“It would be much hard-er for them to go out and find all of this stuff on their own,” Ransom said. “You can Google anything, but you

don’t necessarily know that it’s right. Ours [information] is Red Cross handouts and Department of Homeland Security handouts and all of our material is from the expert.”

Goochland may partici-

pate in another Survivor Day in the fall if the funding is available, Ransom said.

For now though, she’s excited that the county is par-ticipating in Saturday’s event.

“I’m really excited that we’re getting on the big scale

of things,” Ransom said. “Like last time [in January], it was, ‘Oh tell people to go to the one in Richmond’ and I feel like we’re stepping up to the plate with the bigger departments and really getting involved.”

Healthy Eating from your own Backyard

If you like the idea of gardening at waist level and avoiding the pesky salad lov-ing critters who usually dine

in your traditional garden, here is a project for you. It’s called a salad table. Salad greens in a traditional gar-den are usually over when the summer heat arrives. Here is a way to extend your salad growing season and grow the items that you like best

without straining your back. It’s portable and inexpen-sive to build and you can even add wheels. A few items easily grown in a salad table include leaf lettuce, arugula, kale, spinach, radish, parsley, cilantro, and basil. This class is scheduled on Saturday May

12th and will be limited to 14 participants, so register early. Pre-registration is required, there is a $45 fee for this workshop.

To register for the Salad Table Project, or for addition-al information please contact the Goochland Extension

office at 804-556-5841.

Girls lock up title while Bulldog boys look to break tie

With four games left in the regular season, the Goochland varsity boys’ soccer team sits atop the James River District, but they are not there alone. Buckingham also shares the same spot and the Bulldogs know that each remaining game could be a determining factor in the final outcome.

On Monday, the Bulldogs hosted Nottoway in a district match up with playoff impli-cations for both teams. While Goochland tried to stay atop the JRD, the Cougars were bat-tling for inclusion in the post season with a top four playoff spot.

“We’re still fighting to get in the district tournament. We’re right on the line right now,” said Nottoway coach Noel Patino. “I think we are playing well enough to make the play-offs and the kids really hustled

out there today.” Goochland coach Patrick

Brook has loftier goals in his

mind. “We’d like to make it to the states for the first time in four years” he said.

The Cougars took control in the first half, controlling play and keeping the ball on

Goochland’s side of the field. However, the good defense and precision passing didn’t equate to goals and the Cougar’s fail-ure to connect resulted in only six saves for Goochland goalie Chris Hawk.

The teams played to a scoreless first half tie, but the Bulldogs wasted little time in the second half before striking pay dirt.

With a little over 30 min-utes remaining, Guillermo Mendez struck a crossing shot that was headed in by freshman Fernando Ibarra, the Bulldogs leading scorer.

“We’re looking for some really good things from Fernando,” Brook said. “He has excellent ball handling skills and really has a bright future in this game.”

Goochland added another goal when Rashid Socarras struck the net from 10 yards out, giving Goochland a 2-0 lead.

“I thought we had a really slow start tonight. We tend to start slowly, and work in to the game and pick up things in the second half,” Brook said.

“We could have played better tonight and I expected a little more.”

On May 9, the Bulldogs travel to Buckingham for what could be a district decid-ing matchup and Brook said the team isn’t taking anything for granted. “We’re practicing hard every day we don’t have a game.”

The top two finishers in the James River District automati-cally advance to regional com-petition. “We hope to be in first place,” Brook said.

The Goochland girls’ soccer team is also in first place in the district and has wrapped up the JRD title.

The Lady Bulldogs played a non-district game against Louisa on Tuesday evening. They are then off until a regu-lar season finale against Trinity on May 11. JRD tournament action begins on May 18.

“It will be a challenge with so much time off and only one game in those 17 days,” said coach Tom Reid.

On Monday, the girls took a 9-0 decision over the visiting Cougars and continued their relentless passing game high-lighted by 50 unofficial shots on goal in the game.

As might be expected when longtime rivals St. Christopher’s and Benedictine get together, a baseball game can produce a bit of everything.

And that’s what happened Monday night at RF&P Park, when there were 17 runs, 15 hits, six errors, 11 walks, three hit batters, seven stolen bases and 15 strikeouts.

When the final outs were recorded — on the only double play of the game — the Cadets had prevailed 11-6 in the annu-al Buddy Ball affair between the two private schools that raises money for a league for children

Cadets prevail over rival Saints in a wild affairwith intellectual and physical challenges.

“I never really felt safe, even in the last inning,” said Benedictine coach Sean Ryan, whose club improved to 17-5 and strengthened its position on top of the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association rankings.

“They still had some at bats left and they swung the bats pretty well all night. We helped them by walking some guys and making some crucial errors. You can’t do that against a good team like St. Christopher’s. They made a great game of it.”

Benedictine led 8-2 after four innings, but the Saints (10-7), ranked No. 3 in the VISAA,

scored once in the fifth and three times in the sixth to slice their deficit to 8-6. But the Cadets scored three runs in the sixth to put it out of reach.

In keeping with the tone of the evening, the final three runs came on a throwing error, a wild pitch and a groundout.

“I was proud of our boys after about the third or fourth inning,” said St. Christopher’s coach Tony Szymendera. “I really didn’t think we were competing as well as we needed to compete (to that point). We wanted to do things but we weren’t doing things.

“Scoring runners from third with less than two outs. Letting too many leadoff batters on. So

I really challenged them and I thought we did a better job of that as the game went on. We knew their pitching was tiring but we just couldn’t hold them there at the end.”

Designated hitter Reid Leonard had three hits for the Cadets, scored twice and knocked in a run.

Center fielder Colton Konvicka contributed a pair of doubles, scored two runs and added an RBI. He also pitched the final 12⁄3 innings to pick up a save.

“He’s been closing some games for us,” said Ryan. “He’s been one of our better guys to come out of the bullpen at the end of the game. We’re a little

bit weaker in the outfield when we take him out, but he brings us somebody who can close out a game.”

Worth Osgood had two hits for the Saints and scored three runs, while Charlie Yorgen walked three times, scored twice and stole two bases.

The game raised nearly $2,300 for Buddy Ball, break-ing last year’s mark of about $2,000.

Collegiate seniors get win on their day

What a difference a week makes.

When the St. Gertrude’s and Collegiate softball teams played a week ago the out-come was never in doubt as the Cougars rolled to a 17-0 win.

But the Gators came to play in the LIS rematch at Collegiate last Friday and gave the home team all they could handle.

Collegiate escaped with a 2-0 victory and both coaches left pleased with the way their squads had performed.

“That was a real good game for us,” said Gators coach Becky Milton. “We played them last week and had some girls out sick and injured and lost by the slaughter rule. I think this will show the girls we can compete with anyone in the LIS (Independent League Schools).”

The Gators had their chances leaving several play-ers stranded, which Milton felt was the difference in the game.

“When you have those opportunities, you have to exe-

cute and score those runners,” she said.

It was a pitcher’s duel until the bottom of the fourth when Collegiate senior third baseman Emily Flippo scored on a hit by Mallory Knighton to give the Cougars a 1-0 advantage.

The Gators almost answered in the fifth inning when Sarah Cronin singled and advanced to second on a bad throw, but Knighton ended that threat with a tag out at home.

The Cougars added an insurance run in the sixth.

Collegiate coach Robby Turner was pleased with the play of both teams. “I thought it was a well played game all the way around,” he said. “I love games like that. My hat is off to their pitcher and the rest of the team. They made the plays out there today and thankfully we were able to make a few more.”

It was senior day for the Cougars and Turner felt the win was typical for this group of girls. “We had to depend on our pitching and defense to get this win,” he said. “Gabby Gelozin, our shortstop, made some really nice plays for us today.”

Left fielder Elizabeth Bowles also had a stellar game with several key catches to

secure the Cougar victory. Katie McCauley relieved starter Emily Shinn in the victory.

Gator left fielder Catherine Rolland also had several div-ing catches and two hits at the plate.

The Cougars wrap up regu-lar season play this week and prepare for the LIS tourna-

ment. There’s a familiar scenario

looming on the horizon for the Cougars in the form of St. Catherine’s and the two teams seem destined to battle for the title again.

On Monday evening, Collegiate beat St. Catherine’s 3-2 in their regular season

rematch. “The league is really tight

this year and I really think any team can win on any day,” Turner said. “I think that’s good and keeps everyone on their toes. You can’t take it easy against anyone in this league.”

If St. Catherine’s and Collegiate face off for the LIS title again this year Turner expects it will once again be a gritty and exciting game.

“It’s a great, natural rivalry,” he said. “Our girls know their girls. It’s fun and they really didn’t lose anyone this year either, so they’re very good.”

When the Cougars’ season does come to a close Turner will have a hard time saying goodbye to a group of seniors who have been with him since the beginning.

“This is my first group of seniors as softball coach here, and I feel like a parent whose kids are heading off to college,” he said. “This group has stayed tight and the team chemistry is incredible. It’s going to be dif-

ficult to let this group go.”St. Gertrude’s...... 000 000 0 — 0 6 0Collegiate............. 000 101 x — 2 5 2Reardon and Nelson. Shinn, McCauley (6) and Knighton. W — Shinn. Jordan makes final trip to the plateJordan makes final trip to the plateThis Saturday, Brian Jordan will

step to the plate for the final time in his college baseball career as Randolph-Macon hosts York, Pa. in a double-header starting at 1 p.m.

The former Goochland stand-out has been a mainstay in the Yellow Jackets lineup since trans-ferring from Virginia Tech to R-MC in 2009.

As a freshman at R-MC, Jordan started in 24 of his 25 game appear-ances and he has started every game since. In 2010, Jordan was named to the Second Team All-Old

Dominion Athletic Conference roster after batting .380 and notch-ing a .500 on base percentage.

Jordan once again earned Second Team All-ODAC honors as a junior as R-MC’s second lead-ing hitter, batting .333. He tied for a team-best four home runs and led the Yellow Jackets with 49 runs scored.

Jordan will be remembered for his judgment at the plate. For the past three seasons he led the Yellow Jackets in walks and comes into Saturday’s double-header having recorded 97 over his career.
