    Advanced: Reading Comprehension

Alexander Fleming didnt plan on revolutionizing medicine by discoveringthe worlds first antibiotic on September 28, 1928, but thats exactly whathappened. During that year, Fleming had been investigating theproperties of staphylococci .

On September 3, 1928, Fleming returned to his laboratory having spent

that August on vacation with his family. Before leaving, he had stacked allhis cultures of staphylococci on a bench in a corner of his laboratory.Upon returning, Fleming noticed that one of his cultures wascontaminated with a mold, and that the colonies of staphylococciimmediately surrounding it had been destroyed. He identified the mold asbeing from the Penicillium genus and named the substance penicillin.

Fleming found that cultivating penicillin was quite difficult. He finallyabandoned his attempts to grow it, and not long after, Florey and Chainat the Radcliffe Infirmary in Oxford took up researching and massproducing it with funds from the U.S. Sadly, Fleming did not receive anyof the profits.
