Castle Hills residents and neighbors are invited to dust off their cowboy boots at the Castle Hills Village Shops when Big City Outlaws takes the stage on Saturday, May 13, as part of the 2017 Castle Hills Spring Concert Series. This year’s concert series is presented by the City of Lewisville, in partnership with Castle Hills developer Bright Realty. The FREE concerts take place at the Castle Hills Village Shops, located at 2540 King Arthur Boulevard in the master-planned Castle Hills community in Lewisville.

Big City Outlaws, a country rock party band, opens the concert series with their rockin’ country western music. The line-up will include classics from old school favorites like Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson to current Top 40 hits from Carrie Underwood, Miranda Lambert, Blake Shelton and Luke Bryan. Rock hits from Journey, Poison and Bon Jovi are also on the playlist.

The Big City Outlaws concert is sponsored by Grande Communications, local cable and internet provider for Castle Hills residents. Come early to reserve your spot in front of the main stage built for the event on Lady of the Lake. Spread out on blankets and in lawn chairs with the whole family. Family-friendly activities such as bounce houses, carnival games and prizes, face painters and a black light photo booth start at 6:30 p.m. Big City Outlaws will take the stage from 8 to 9:30 p.m.

Guests can enjoy a pre-concert meal or post-concert cocktail at one of several restaurants at the Village Shops. PI.E 3.14 Everyday Eatery, open until 10 p.m. for food and later for drinks, specializes in signature pizzas and a one-of-a-kind drink menu. T.B.D. Kitchen, open until 11 p.m. for food and later for drinks, has great tacos

and burritos, as well as its daily “Daisy,” the eatery’s specialty cocktail. Grab some fresh sushi and sashimi at Kanzi Sushi & Hibachi until 10 p.m. or some Chinese stir-fry and spring rolls at Z’s Wok until 10:30 p.m. For a sweet post-concert treat, visit Froyo Smoo-licious, open until 10 p.m. Also joining the event is Freebirds, which has a nearby location at Castle Hills Marketplace. The Freebirds food truck will be parked near the main stage serving steak burritos, nachos, street tacos and tostadas. Ms. Piggy’s food truck will serve gumbo, red beans & rice, chicken fingers, corn dogs and funnel cakes.

The 2017 Castle Hills Spring Concert Series also features a Saturday, June 10, concert with The Boy Band Night, a boy band cover band, sponsored by Kroger.

Bring your friends! The concert is open to everyone.

Fence StainingThere are many fences in Castle Hills that could use a “face lift” in the form of cleaning and re-staining. In order to re-stain your fence properly it must first be cleaned

(power washed) to remove old stain/dirt that has aged/accumulated causing the gray effect, if the fence is not first cleaned

the stain will not soak into the wood as well and your fence will still not look very good and will probably need to be done again much sooner rather than later.

At the same time you are staining the fence, look for any loose or damaged boards, sometimes just a few wood screws will fix the problem and make a big difference in the way your fence looks. The preferred fence color is a medium brown. Not only will this help increase the life of your fence, but it will give your home a fresh look and make the Castle Hills Community look great to visitors and prospective buyers. The way our Community looks has a direct effect on

the home value and desirability to live in Castle Hills.

If you are cleaning and re-staining your fence to a medium brown finish, you do not need to get HOA approval. If you are replacing your fence, you do need to get approval in advance by submitting an application to the Castle Hills Resident Architectural Review Committee (RARC). Once you receive an approval letter, you or your contractor can apply to the Denton County Water District for the applicable permit. Early spring is a great time to have this done so that you can enjoy the refreshed look of your fence throughout the spring, summer, and fall.

April Lawn & Landscape Guide• Treat weeds in the lawn with a post-emergent weed

control – be careful to treat only the weeds and not the grass.

• Fertilize your yard – this is what helps make your lawn green and thicken.

• Fertilize all trees and shrubs with a granular fertilizer made for trees and shrubs – don’t rely on your lawn fertilizer to do this work.

• Your lawn needs weekly mowing. Don’t bag, but mulch and don’t scalp your lawn. Be sure to trim and edge the lawn as well.

• Spring watering suggestions: Water your lawn 15 minutes twice a week and landscape beds 15 – 20 minutes twice a week. You can set each station of your sprinkler system for the appropriate amount of time and this still keeps compliance with the Stage 2 water restrictions for Castle Hills, just be sure you are watering on the correct days.

• Plant seasonal color – begonias or pentas in the sun and for shade you can plant impatiens or caladiums. There are many other plants to choose from, these are just some suggestions.

• Springtime is a good time to mulch the beds for a fresh look – 1 ½ inches to 2 inches deep. Hardwood, pine bark, and cedar mulch are all good to use.

• If your trees are a year or more old, consider removing the stakes (this includes the parkway trees). As the tree grows the part of the stake that is wrapped around the tree tightens and the tree can actually start to grow around it, potentially causing damage to the tree. Also, the tree being continually staked can make the root system not develop properly so the tree does not grow. If the stakes are no longer connected to the tree, please remove the stake and wire. It does not look good and it may be a safety hazard for pedestrians and animals.

• Grass and weeds in landscape beds detract from the appearance of your home and the aesthetics of the community.

Dear Friends,With spring break behind us and daylight savings activated, life naturally moves outside. Kids’ sports move out of smelly gyms and into the open fields of soccer and baseball. Bedtimes seem to sneak away from us and the grill is always a dinner option. At Kids R Kids, we incorporate the outdoors into our spring curriculum, and we celebrate spring with annual events like our Spring Egg Hunt and Trik-a-thon for St. Jude’s Children Hospital.

And once spring has sprung, every child who can read a calendar knows that summer beckons on the horizon. If you are looking to fill an entire summer with education and fun or just a few weeks, come check our summer camp program. Again voted “Best in the Metroplex”, your school age child will have a blast with awesome field trips and friends.

In thinking about summer, I offer a confession. I used to be one of “those” moms who never bought sunscreen until the pool opened in May. My habit was forced to change with my third-born, the child with sensitive skin. It never failed. After watching one of his older brother’s baseball games, we returned home and I looked upon the sweet face of my youngest son with horror as he glowed back at me in vibrant red. So, this year, I bought the sunscreen while grocery shopping just prior to the first baseball tournament weekend- in February!

So, whether you are a newcomer to using sunscreen in winter or you lather up the whole family before Christmas caroling, we thought it would be great to examine some common myths about sunscreen. It can get very confusing on how to protect your kids from the sun (especially if you grew up in the generation that soaked yourself in baby oil and laid on mats that look like aluminum foil):

• Myth 1 - An SPF 100+ sunscreen provides three times the sun protection of an SPF 30 sunscreen. An SPF 30 or SPF 50 sunscreen provides protection against 97 to 98 percent of UVB rays. While a higher SPF sunscreen might block 99 percent of UVB rays, it is only a very slight increase. Using a high SPF sunscreen might provide more protection for those parents who don't use enough sunscreen and don't reapply it often enough though.

• Myth 2 - You can't get a sunburn on a cloudy day. According to the FDA, "Even on an overcast day, up to 80 percent of the sun's UV rays can get through the clouds." So remember that even when it is cloudy, your kids need sunscreen to avoid getting a sunburn.

• Myth 3 - I don't have to reapply my 'waterproof' sunscreen after my kids swim. The FDA states that no sunscreen is truly waterproof or sweat-proof, but can instead be water-resistant. All sunscreens, even those that claim to be waterproof, should be reapplied after your kids swim.

• Myth 4 - Sunscreen just doesn't work on my child. If your kids are getting a tan and you are using sunscreen, then you are likely making one of the common sunscreen mistakes, such as not applying enough sunscreen, not applying it soon enough before your kids go outside, not using sunscreen every time your kids go out in the sun, or not reapplying it often enough.

• Myth 5 - My child is allergic to sunscreen. It is unlikely that a child would be allergic to sunscreen. Instead, he might be allergic or sensitive to a particular sunscreen ingredient, which can vary between brands, so under the direction of your pediatrician, consider switching to a different sunscreen or sunblock with totally different ingredients and apply a very small amount to one part of your child's body to see if he has a reaction again.

• Myth 6 - My kids use sunscreen, so they are safe from the sun. There is actually a little more to sun safety and protecting your kids from ultraviolet radiation than using sunscreen. These sun safety tips include properly using a broad-spectrum sunscreen, getting your kids to wear sunglasses that offer 99 to 100 percent UV protection, wearing as much protective clothing as possible as well as a broad rimmed hat, seeking shade when it is available, and limiting exposure to the sun when it is strongest -- between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

• Myth 7 - My kids already have a tan, so they don't need sunscreen. A "base tan" is not a substitute for sunscreen, and remember that there is no such thing as a "healthy tan." Your kids need to use sunscreen to prevent further skin damage from the sun's UV rays.

• Myth 8 - I shouldn't use sunscreen so that my kids will make more vitamin D. There are much safer

ways for your kids to get vitamin D than unprotected exposure to the sun's UV rays, including vitamins, milk, and other vitamin D fortified foods.

• Myth 9 - My kids have dark skin, so they don't need sunscreen. Everyone should use a broad spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15 to 30 all of the time when they are going to be out in the sun. Even people with deeply pigmented skin, who rarely burn, should use sunscreen. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, "everybody, regardless of race or ethnicity, is subject to the potential adverse effects of overexposure to the sun."

• Myth 10 - SPF measures how much protection a sunscreen offers. While SPF does stand for sun protection factor, it is only a measure of the sunscreen's level of protection against UVB rays, which typically cause sunburn. However, it does not take into consideration whether the sunscreen protects against UVA rays, and these UVA rays penetrate deep into the skin and cause premature aging of the skin.

Proposed changes to sunscreen labels by the FDA will require a four-star rating system so that consumers can see how much UVA protection the sunscreen offers or whether the sunscreen offers no UVA protection at all. Right now, parents should look for a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a minimum SPF of 15 to 30 to ensure that it offers both UVA and UVB protection.

At Kids R Kids Castle Hills, we do require labeled, non-expired sunscreen for each child so we can help keep your little ones safe from those UV rays! We also make sure they have a great time learning with curriculum that prepares them for elementary years and beyond. Come by and visit our award-winning preschool or set up a time to tour our private kindergarten. And be sure to tell your kids to buy stock in Coppertone or Banana Boat - sunscreen is as common a purchase now as toothpaste!
