My wife and I stayed at

a place next to Lake of theOzarks last week Therewere seagulls on a sandbar

just off our shoreline whowere fascinating toobserve Theyrsquod arrive eachmorning at sunrise hangout all day and fly off intothe sunset each nightThere were actually twosandbars--one offshorethe other a needle-nosed

endpoint of the shorelineEach had a congregationof gulls

Gulls are contentiousThey fight over foodthey fight over territorythey chase each other

and squawk for reasonsonly they and God knowThey take off and fly insearch of food but unlessIrsquom crazy sometimes theychase around in the airand ride the wind just forthe sheer joy of it ldquoHeyman these wings are coolLook what I can dordquo

But one morning I sawsomething really amazing

The two congregationsset up on their sandbarsand after a couple ofemissary gulls from theoffshore group came overto the needle-point groupthe whole needle-pointgroup every last one ofthem simultaneously lefttheir landing place andsqueezed into the othercrowd

Then a solitary gullwho mustrsquove missed thegull alarm that morningflew in from the west andlanded all by itself on thepoint

After a minute a gull

from the offshorecongregation came over tovisit then flew back MrlsquoIrsquom OK by myselfrsquo stayedput Then three moregulls from sandbarnumber one came over andvisited the solitaryone They stayed awhileWhen they lifted inflight the loner joinedthem and squeezed intothe offshore lineup as

happy as a larker gullI mean
