Todays Game: The Generals and Suns meet in the middle contest of
a five-game series in Jacksonville to begin the 2015
season...Jackson shut out the Suns in the first game by a 2-0
score, but Jacksonville returned the favor Friday night in a 7-0
win to even the series...Tyler Pike gets the ball for the Generals
after splitting 2014 between High Desert and Jackson...Pitched the
first six innings of a combined no-hitter for the Mavericks last
May against Rancho Cucamonga.
Versus Jacksonville: This is the only trip of the year to
Jacksonville for the Generals. The two teams split 10 meetings last
year, with the Suns taking three of five at Bragan Field...Matt
Anderson, who picked up the save on Open-ing Night, gave up just
three earned runs in 12.1 innings (2.19 ERA) over two outings
against the Suns.
Shutout, then Shut Out: Each team has been held scoreless once
in the first two games of this series. Jackson won 2-0 on Opening
Night before Jacksonville rebounded with a 7-0 victory on
Friday...Three Jackson pitchers combined on a three-hitter
Thursday. Stephen Landazuri gave up just one hit over six innings
in the start...The Jackson offense is hitting .185 through two
games whit 24 strikeouts...Jackson was a part of 18 shutouts in
2014, winning half of those contests
Back in Jackson: Jacksons 25-man active Opening Day roster
features 17 players who played for the Generals in 2014. D.J.
Peterson and Dan Paolini, who tied for the team lead last season
with 13 home runs, are both back with the Generals. Dario Pizzano,
who ranked third on the club with 55 RBIs last season returns to
West Tennessee as well. Moises Hernandez and Kyle Hunter, who both
made more than 30 relief appearances for the team in 2014, make up
part of the 2015 bullpen as well. Additionally, Manager Jim Horner
and Pitching Coach Lance Painter are back in the Generals
dugout.
2014 in Review: The Generals went 63-76 in 2014, finishing third
in the North Division in both halves of the season. The team ranked
second in the Southern League in batting average (.261), third in
hits (1,210) and steals (109). The teams 894 strikeouts were the
fewest of any Southern League team. Ketel Marte led the team with a
.302 average. Both Marte and D.J. Peterson were recognized as top
prospects in the league by Baseball America after the season, with
Peterson named the leagues eighth-best prospect and Marte checking
in at 13.
Offensive Firepower: The 2015 Generals figure to feature a
powerful offense, as all five of the top-30 Seattle prospects
according to Baseball America on the squad are hitters: D.J.
Peterson (2), Gabriel Guerrero (7), Jordy Lara (15), Jack
Reinheimer (17) and Julio Morban (25). Eight players hit 10 or more
home runs last year, including four that surpassed 15: Gabriel
Guerrero (18), Jordy Lara (26), Jabari Henry (30) and D.J.
Peterson. Guerrero and Lara were two of just seven minor league
players to hit .300 with 90 runs scored, 45 extra-base hits and 90
runs batted in.
Olson Makes Big League Debut: Lefty Tyler Olson made his major
league debut on Tuesday, inducing a 5-4-3 double play in the top of
the ninth inning against the Angels. The southpaw became the 52nd
former Generals/Diamond Jaxx player to go on to make his big league
debut in the Seattle era (since 2007) and the first in 2015. The
Spokane native was the only player not on the Seattle 40-man roster
at the start of Spring Training to make the team. Olson started 22
games for the Generals in 2014. He finished strong, going 5-1 with
a 1.18 ERA in August.
On The Clock: As part of new pace-of-play initiatives, pitch
clocks will be used at every game at the Double-A and Triple-A
levels in 2015. Within 20 seconds of the prior pitch, pitchers will
have to begin their motion or come set while hitters have to set
foot in the batters box. There will also be breaks of 2:25 between
innings and for each pitching change. April will serve as a grace
period, but penalties including fines, automatic balls and
automatic strikes will be implemented starting in May.
