1908 After watching a baker mix bread dough with a heavy iron spoon, Herbert Johnston put his engineering skills to work to develop what became the first commercial mixer. 1914 The model H , an 80- quart capacity commercial stand mixer designed by Johnston, hits the market. Within three years, it is specified as standard equipment on all U.S. Navy ships. 1919 The Hobart model H-5 , the home mixer with the unique planetary mixing action that is a KitchenAid ® exclusive, was introduced. When wives of Hobart executives tested the H-5, one remarked: «I don’t care what you call it, it’s the best kitchen aid I’ve ever had». From thay day forward, that brand name has been the KitchenAid ® trademark; it was registered with the U.S. Patent Office in 1919. With the creation of citrus juicer and food grinder attachments in 1919, KitchenAid ® mixers were on the road to becoming the versatile «food preparation tools», as they were subsequently styled. 1920 The KitchenAid Manufacturing Company is created. KitchenAid ® stand mixer operations move to Troy, Ohio. 1923 An advertising campaign for the KitchenAid ® home mixer was launched in national media, including the highly respected Good Housekeeping and The Saturday Evening Post. 1927 The Model G stand mixer is introduced. Lighter and more compact than the H-5, it sells 20.000 units in its first three years on the market. Early users of these machines include John Barrymore, Henry Ford and Ginger Rogers. 1936 American acclaimed editor and designer Egmont Arens was retained to design three new mixer models, which have been virtually unchanged until today. The Arens-designed Model K is introduced. In August, two Arens-designed coffee mills, Models A-9 and A-10, join the KitchenAid product lineup. 1955 KitchenAid ® mixers appeared in new colours at the Atlantic City Housewares Show… Petal Pink, Sunny Yellow, Island Green, Satin Chrome and Antique Copper. These colours can be showed as «new» nowadays. 1962 4.5 quart capacity model K45 was introduced. The most popular KitchenAid ® mixer ever, the K45 is still an important model in the line. 1986 Whirlpool Corporation acquired KitchenAid. 05 KA time table.indd 1 29.1.2009 18:18:35
