Field Trips:

• Plan a field trip to the museum or a virtual field trip to one of the museums listed in the related links

• Go to a local college's paleontology department for a field trip

Activities:

• Take your class on an Internet Scavenger Hunt - This is a great way to introduce the subject ofdinosaurs.

• Have your students create a special Web page to show off their dinosaur-related work.

• Make a Dinosaur Big Book

• Make a diorama of the dinosaur's world.

• Create paper bag puppets of dinosaurs.

• Have your students become paleontologist (a scientist who specializes in finding and studyingfossils). Bring a bag of chocolate chip cookies and a box of toothpicks to class. Give each student twocookies and 2 or 3 toothpicks. Have them "excavate" the chocolate chips without breaking them. Seewho can "excavate" the most chips. You might estimate how many chips are in the cookie beforehandand see if your estimation is correct. Then of course. the students enjoy "cleaning up" the remains.

• Create some fossils of your own. You will need some styrofoam bowls, plaster of paris and someshells or toy plastic dinosaurs. While the plaster is still wet, press the shells or plastic dinosaurs into it,let it harden, then remove the shell or toy and students can see how the fossils are formed. Bill NyeEpisode Guide-Dinosaurs--more directions for making fossils

Page 10: 04-03-2000-Dinosaurs

• Using the sources listed below, list some dinosaurs and their lengths on the chalkboard. To helpstudents understand just how long some dinosaurs were, measure off the length with yarn. Yarn canbe tied into 5ft.- 10ft. lengths. Students can count by 5's or 10's to determine the length.(Unit onDinosaurs)

• Give each student a large piece of butcher paper and have them draw their favorite dinosaur andcolor or paint it. Place a second sheet of paper under the first sheet and staple them together loosely, leaving a small opening for stuffing. Stuff the dinosaur with crumpled newspaper and add legs, horns, tails, etc. Label them and display them in the classroom.(Unit on Dinosaurs) Take a look atCreateasaurus and Dinosaur Art and Modeling

• Have students make a computer graph of their dinosaurs, comparing height and weight with those ofother dinosaurs and humans. You could use ClarisWorks for Kids to do this.

• Dinosaur Crowns-Cut sponges in the shape of Tyrannosaurus footprints. Pour a small amount of paint in a bowl. Givechild crowns made of construction paper and have him cover his crown with footprints.

• Stuffed Dino- For each child cut out of brown paper bags the shape of the dino you want. Shapearound three sides of you dino. Have the children fill it with small pieces of paper till it is stuffed. Saplethe remaining side. Decorate your stuffed dino anyway you want.

• Fossil hunt- Bury several plastic dinos in a large pan of dirt or cornmeal. Let the children take turnsgoing on a dino hunt. When a dino fossil is found, ask the child ot identify it by looking at itscharacteristics.

• Play dough Fossils- Make gray play dough by adding small amounts of black powered temperapaint. Let the child make fossils by pressing down into the playdough with the dino toys. Remove thecarfully to see the print left.

• Dino delights- Give children to pieces of a hot dog and broccoli florets and salad dressing. Talk aboutmeateatting dinos vs plant eatting Explain about the teeth differences.

• Make an alphabet book on Dinosaurs
