The Upper Arlington Area Chamber of Com-merce recently recog-nized a host of business and civic leaders for contributions to the local community and economy.

A lucky 13 individu-als and businesses were honored March 1 as part of the Upper Arlington Area Chamber of Com-merce’s fifth annual Community Celebration and Business Showcase.

Held at the St. Agatha Church Parish Hall, the event was an opportunity for the chamber to look back at Upper Arlington’s evolution and the cham-ber’s own beginnings in 1977, as well as the direc-tion of the community and area business sector.

“The theme ‘Go Back to the Future’ gave at-tendees an opportunity to go back in time and see how Upper Arlington was formed while travel-ing decade by decade until they finally arrived to present day,” chamber President Becky Hajost said.

“During the video presentation, each past chairperson of the board was recognized for their contribution and winners of the Taste of UA were recognized as gift cards were drawn by various audience participants.”

This year, the cham-ber allowed the public to determine the win-ners of the Community Celebration and Busi-ness Showcase through Internet voting. The only criteria is that award fi-nalists must be chamber members.

“The chamber’s Com-munity Celebration is a time to celebrate the economic vitality of Upper Arlington,” said Debbie Segor, Upper Arlington Area Chamber of Commerce member-ship director. “And each year, we look forward to celebrating the efforts of our member businesses as well.

“This event is the

culmination of a year of the chamber’s hard work in helping our members sustain, expand and grow their business in the local UA area,” she said. “This one day lets us celebrate our successes and honor our members.”

Among the many individuals and busi-nesses honored was Wes Newhouse, who received the 2012 W. Arthur Cull-man Business Person of the Year Award.

“It is a great honor to receive this award,” New-house said. “We live in an exceptional community with great schools, good government, excellent not for profit institutions and great businesses.

“They all work to-gether to make Upper Arlington a very special

place to live and work.”Hajost said New-

house’s work with the chamber has been vital to its success and to the local community and business sector.

“Wes is a member of the chamber board of

trustees and is the chair of the chamber’s eco-nomic development divi-sion,” Hajost said. “He works with the business development commit-tee, which he chaired for two years, and the retail committee.

Community MarketPlace event attracts locals and visitors for city wide garage sale May 4

Upper Arlington’s Community Market Day will have people in the streets shopping for bargains throughout the day. Local busi-nesses are able to benefit from the additional foot traffic in the city while residents will be able to clear out their garages and make some extra cash. As the Chamber strives to add value to the com-munity and join all occupants together, we will gladly welcome the enthusiastic crowd May 4 who will come to visit local business sidewalk sales and residential streets and to do some Saturday shopping.

Not only will individuals of the community profit, but some of the local businesses we hope will once again see extra customers walking through their doors. This type of event is a great way to show the rest of Columbus all that UA has to offer.

As the Chamber strives to improve the quality of life and maintain the vitality of the com-munity, we are thrilled to provide events such as this so others can regularly be reminded of what a

great city we have. We are look-ing for the event to have an even greater turnout this year.

We would like to thank all those that participated last year that made this event so successful and look forward to an even more exciting event May 4. It is impor-tant for our Chamber to continu-ously look at ways to promote our community in partnership with the City and maintain the success of our thriving business environ-ment.

Get added visibility by sponsor-ing your business through yard signs, billboards, internet and print. The Chamber will inform people through multiple mediums to include extensive email chains, various social networking activi-ties, printed advertising, signage and classified ads.

Contact the Chamber at www.uachamber.org or call (614) 481-5710 for more information.
