2 Answer The compact starters are frequently used in applications that require safe disconnection. If the 3RA6 compact starter is operated on a fail-safe output module of the ET 200M, ET 200S or ET 200SP, there may be incorrect interpretations of the fail-safe module due to the connected test signals for short-circuit detection.

The S7 fail-safe controller may passivate the output channel or output module. This may result in a safety-related shutdown of the application. Depending on the I/O system used, different measures can be implemented to ensure trouble-free operation.

This document explains the complete situation in detail.

3 Introduction The compact starters are frequently used in applications that require safe disconnection. Depending on the safety requirements, compact starters are combined with additional switchgear and then operated via safety relays, such as safety relays 3SK2, or outputs of fail-safe controllers.

The 3RA6 compact starters can be operated on many digital outputs without any problems due to their low power consumption. But error messages may be caused by self-tests of the fail-safe output modules of the SIMATIC S7 and the features of the control inputs of the 3RA6 compact starter. This FAQ describes the causes and some recommendations to remedy this situation.

3.1 Causes

The control supply voltage drops too slowly during disconnection due to the capacitive components in the control inputs and the low power consumption of the 3RA6 compact starters. This situation may result in an incorrect interpretation in the F-DO module, error message "short-circuit", caused by the self-test of the F-DO modules during operation on fail-safe outputs of SIMATIC S7. The S7-F controller passivates the respective module or channel (depending on the configuration) and the drive or group is safely shut down.

3.2 Details of the self-tests

Self-tests, also referred to as light-/ dark tests, are used to detect short-circuits (dark test) or interruptions (light test) at the control lines. To do so, the initial state at the digital outputs is changed for a short time and the voltage at the outputs is read back after a defined period of time (readback time).

If capacitive loads are connected, the voltage that is read back may be so high that the fail-safe output interprets it as short-circuit of the control line against the supply voltage.

See the respective manuals of the ET 200S, ET 200M and ET 200SP modules for more details regarding the maximum permitted capacities and remedial measures.

The modules of the distributed ET 200S and ET 200SP I/O system give you the option to set the readback time in a range from 1 ms up to 400 ms. The modules of the ET 200M operate with a fixed time of 1 ms.

4 Remedial measures The possible faults can be prevented by a number of measures. Below are only a few of these options.

4.1 Adjusting the readback time (with ET 200S and ET 200SP systems)

The default readback time of the ET 200S and ET 200SP modules is 1 ms. You can increase this time up to 400 ms. The longer the readback time, the larger the capacitive load on the outputs can be.

For operation of 3RA6 direct-on-line starters or reversing starters, we recommend setting the readback time individually during commissioning.

You have to consider, setting the readback time that there is no error message on the failsafe modules and no failure take place in the 3RA6. If the readback time is set to high the 3RA6 recognize the dark test and is switching in the puls of this test.

Note The readback time has to be matched on the own application.

Increasing the readback time will increase the internal processing time of the module. This will have an effect on the response time of the system. Note the data on readback and response times in the manual:

"Distributed I/O System ET 200S Distributed I/O System - Fail-Safe Modules".

“SIMATIC ET 200SP Distributed I/O system” – System Manual

4.2 Decoupling of the compact starter

Pay attention to the following notes for installation of safety-related components according to applicable standards:

Install coupling relays and diodes as closely as possible to the compact starter because there is no short-circuit test of the control line "behind" the relay/diode.

Install control lines either in the same control cabinet or through safe installation (e.g. in armored conduit) so that there is no possibility of a short circuit.

Readback of compact starters and contactors via positively driven NC contacts to evaluate the feedback circuit in the S7 F-CPU

4.2.3 Use of fail-safe PM-E F power module in combination with EM DO output module of ET 200S

In this application, the compact starter can be switched for operation using the standard program and safety-related using the safety program. The limitation to SIL2/ PLe results from the combination of PM-E F and standard DO modules.

Note Pay attention to the notes for switching of loads that are not ground free in the documentation of the PM-E F power module p/m-switching.

4.2.5 Use of coupling relays

Coupling relays, such as 3RQ, can be switched between the outputs and the control inputs with capacitive loads. The coupling relays should be used as closely as possible to the 3RA6 control inputs so that a large part of the control line wiring can be monitored by the fail-safe output module. The use of additional switchgear (coupling relay) in the control lines must be taken into consideration when calculating the safety function.

4.2.6 Use of diodes

The series connection of the diode (e.g. diode terminal 8WA1 011-1EF20) in the control line must take place in the direction of the current. The diode prevents detection of the control voltage buffered by capacities in the 3RA6 at the utputs of the F-DO module during the readback time. The diodes should be used as closely as possible to the 3RA6 control inputs so that a large part of the control line wiring can be monitored by the fail-safe output module. It is not important for the function of the diodes whether or not they are installed in the "P line" or "M line".

5 Special features when connecting a 3RA6250 reversing starter The 3RA6250 reversing starters have a shared reference potential (A2/B2 terminal) for controlling the two inputs (terminals A1 and B1). This means the ground wires at the fail-safe outputs of the ET200S and ET 200SP F-DQ cannot be returned but must be connected to the central "M terminal" of the power module (PM-E). The use of the "M switch" of the individual outputs is not an option.

Figure 11 Wiring diagram circuit reversing starter 3RA6 on ET200S PM-E F pm DC 24V

Note The PFHD value of the module can be used for the safety-related calculation. Due to the single-channel architecture in the actuator circuit a maximum of SIL 1 to IEC 62061 or PL c to ISO 13849-1:2006 can be reached.

Example of reversing starter 3RA6 SIL 3 to IEC 62061 or PL e to ISO 13849-1: 2006

If decoupling of the control inputs from the 3RA6 by diodes is selected, the least effort is required if only one diode is used in the "M line" (option 2).

The wiring example below shows the two-channel design of a reversing starter with a redundant feed-in contactor for safety-related disconnection up to SIL 3/PL e. The reversing starter and the feed-in contactor are controlled by their own respective output. The evaluation of the mirror contacts takes place in the S7 fail-safe controller.

You have the option to use diodes in the "P lines" or "M lines" to suppress the F-DQ message "Short circuit" if you are unable to increase the readback time or if this step is insufficient.
