In this posting belonging to the series on " Sri RanganAthO Jayathi " relating to the Construction of a Temple for Him at Pomona , NY , I will focus on the ways in which the Upanishads rush to salute Him . I will follow the path established by AchArya RaamAnujA and his successors on this matter.
Sriman NaarAyaNan of Srirangam : Sri RanganAthan *************************************************
AchArya RaamAnujA's darsanam is profound in many ways . Two of the key features of this darsanam are that (1) it harmonizes God's transcendence ( parathvam ) with His accessibility ( Soulabhyam ) and (2) it inculcates "the highest form of devotion without belittling the part of intellectualism and social duties in man's spiritual life " .
Sriman NaarAyaNA as Para VaasudEvan is readily accessible to us at His BhUlOka Vaikuntam on the island of Srirangam . The parathvam of His form at Sri Vaikuntam by the banks of the river VirajA comes together with the soulabhyam of His ArchA svarUpam at Srirangam ( nithya -LeelA VibhUthis ). This amalgamation of Parathvam and Soulabhyam at Srirangam is considered the central root ( aaNi vEr ) of our Sri VaishtAdvaithA tradition elaborated by our AzhwArs and developed further by Dankar , DramidAchAryA , Naathamuni, ALavanthAr , Periya Nambi and Acharya RaamAnujA and his succesors in the mold of Upanishadic and Vedic tradition . The Ubhaya Vedantha tradition flourishes today from that amalgamation .
The embodied Isvara Tattvam at Srirangam *****************************************
9
The epistemology , ontology , cosmology , theology and psychology of Sriman NaarAyaNA as the controller of all (SarvEsvarathvam ) , the principal of all ( sarvasEshithvam ) , the One worshipped by every religious act ( Sarva KarmAradhyathvam ) , the bestower of all fruits of such worship ( Sarva pala pradhathvam ) , the sustainer of all (SarvAdharathvam) , the cause of all effects (Sarva KaaryOthpAdhakthvam) is nowhere celebrated more than at Srirangam . It is no wonder that our AchAryAs , who were conversant with the nuances of Ubhaya VedAntham spent so much of their life time at Srirangam and worshipped Sri RanganAtha as the Jagadheesvaran.
Sri RaamAnujA & Aupanishada- Parama Purushan **********************************************
AchArya RaamAnujA recognized Sriman NaarAyaNA as the Aupanishada-Parama Purushan ( the supreme spirit revealed in the Upanishads ) . He is the same Parama Purushan celebrated by Sri GeethOpanishad in the chapter on PurushOtthama Yogam . This Supreme spirit of the Upanishads has been saluted by AchArya RaamAnujA as " Sruthi-sirasi Videepthan " ( the shining crown of the VedAs ). The nectar churned out of the milky ocean of Upanishads by BaadarAyaNA's Brahma sUthrams was intrepreted by AchAryA RaamAnujA to strengthen the citadel Of Sri VisidshtAdvaitham and fly high the flag of the supermacy of our Soulabhya Para VaasudEvan of Srirangam .
With great coherency and clarity , AchArya RaamAnujA commented on BaadarAyaNa sUtrAs in His Sri BhAshyam and elucidated " the philosophically CENTRAL affirmations of the Upanishads . As an easier text for us to understand, AchArya RaamAnujA gave us VedArtha SangrahA, whose central purpose was to gather into focus the teachings of Upanishads . Sudarsana Suri , the author of Srutha PrakAsikA , an elaboration of Sri Bhaashyam of AchArya RaamAnujA , states that the great AchAryaa extracted the nectar of VedaanthA , meaning Upanishads .With his effective and clear synthesis of the BhEda, BhedAbhEda and AbhEda sruthis , AchArya RaamAnujA was able to establish a coherent doctrine of Brahman . The essence of AchAryA's thesis that is endearing and assuring is that the Brahman of the Upanishads is the paratattvA (supreme Reality ) , parahitA ( the supreme way to redemption ) and and ParapurushArthA (the supreme goal ).
For AchArya RaamAnujA , " the ultimate spirit holds ALL things within Itself and abides as indweller in ALL things-- --- such is the final substance and the entire message of the Upanishads , according to RaamAnujA . For his way of thinking , the concept of Sriman NaarAyaNA , properly comprehended , embodies in itself this philosophy completely . Hence one may , as well , conclude that the WHOLE teaching of the Upanishads stands summed up in A SUPREME SYNTHESIS IN THE CONCEPT OF NAARAAYANAA " . Personal God and the Upanishidic Brahman ****************************************
Sri RamAnujA postualted a personal God and defined Brahman this way: " By the word Brahman is denoted the highest person , who is , by nature, devoid of all evil , and is possessed of hosts of auspicious qualities, which are innumerable and unsurpassable in excellence " . He accepted a world that is real distinctly different from the world of illusion of the advaitins . Regarding the means of attainment , AchArya RaamAnujA accepted Bhakthi and Prapatthi , " wherein the Lord is considered both as a means and the object of attainment . Only
10
he attains the Lord , whom he elects with grace " . This is the essence of Sri VisishtAdvitha Darsanam and Parama purusha prasAdham is central to it and the Samastha chidachidh vasthu sareeran as AkhilAthman blesses us to gain Moksham. These then arethe conclusions of AchArya RaamAnujA that we cherish as the distillation of the essence of the Upanishads on the Aupanishadic Parama Purushan reclining on His serpent bed at Srirangam .
The source Upanishads for Sri RaamAnujA's Works ***********************************************
The 15 upanishads quoted by AchArya RaamAnujA to develop his synthetic approach to reconcile the three categories of sruthis are:
Isa, Kena , Katha , Prasna , Mundaka , MaandUkya , AitarEya , TaittirIya , ChhandOgya , BrihadAraNyaka , KaushItakI , SvetAsvaatara , MahOpanishad , SubAlOpanishad and MahA NaarAyaNOpanishad
Sriman NaarAyaNA of MahA NaarAyaNOpanishad ***********************************************
I will conclude this posting with select manthrams of MahA NaarAyaNOPanishad .This Upanishad has moving revelatory passages on the identity of the ParamAthMan ( Paramapurushan ) . In the very first manthram , which has profound meanings , the role of the Lord of creation is saluted :
ambasya paarEbhuvanasya madhyE naakasya prushtE mahathO maheeyAn I SukrENa jyOthIgumshi samanupravishta : PrajApathisccharathi garbhE antha : II
( Meaning ) : " The Lord of Creation , who is present in the shoreless waters ,on the Earth and above the Heaven and who is greater than the great , having entered the shining intelligence of creatures in seed form, acts in foetus (which grows into the living being that is born)".
This Lord of Creation and the AntharyAmi Brahman is recognized in the next manthram as the source of power by which all Gods remain enjoying their respective powers ( Sarvam yasmin dEvA adhi visvE nishEdhu: ). The Upanishad goes onto declare that certainly has been true in the past and will be true in the future (TadhREva bhUtham tadhu bhavyamA ).
In section 12 , the 17th manthram of this Upanishad we come across the connection of the Lord to PraNavam :
yO vedAdhou svara: prOkthO VedAnthE cha prathishtitha : I tasya prakruthileenasya Ya; Para: sa MahEsvara : II
This manthram asserts that this Lord of Creation is the supreme Lord , who transcends the syllable OM , which is invoked at the commencement of the recital of the VedAs , which is well established in Upanishads and which is dissolved in the primal cause during contemplation .
The next few manthrams identify this supreme Lord as Sriman NaarAyaNA :
11
NaarAyaNam mahAj~nEyam visvAthmAnam parAyaNam
This Supreme Lord , Sriman NaarAyaNA is declared as the One , who is supremely worthy of being known by the Jeevans and recognized as the supreme goal .
The thundering statements that follow are :
NaarAyaNa: param Brahmma tattvam NaarAYaNa: Para: I NaarayaNa: parO jyOthirAthmA NaarayaNa : para :II NaarayaNa: parO dhyAthA dhyAnam NaarayaNa : para : I
( Meaning ) : NaarAyaNA is the supreme reality designated as Brahmman . NaarAyaNA is the loftiest of all principles. NaarAyaNA is the supreme effulgence described by Upanishads. NaarAyaNA is THE INFINITE SELF. He is the most outstanding mediator and meditation.
Yaccha kinjijagathyasmin dhrusyatE SrUyatEpi vaa I antharbahisccha tathsarvam vyApya NaarAyaNa: sthitha : II
( Meaning ) : Whatsoever that is comprehended through perception or known through hearing , all that is pervaded by NaarAyaNA within (indweller) and outside .
A CONCLUDING SALUTATION TO THE SAKALA UPANISHAD SVARUPAN ******************************************************************************
This Lord of Srirangam , who has been saluted as Mahath Yasa: (the great glory). He is the web and woof of creation saluted by the Upanishads . He reclines under PranvAkruthi VimAnam and glorifies the meaning of PraNavam ( PraNavArtha PrakAsakan ) . He is the para Vaasudevan of parama Padham . He is RangEsan . He has Srirangam as His temple by the side of KaavEri river and His other home is by the side of VirajA river in Sri Vaikuntam . That Sri RangasAyee is saluted by this famous slOkam :
KaavErI VirajAsEyam Vaikuntam Rangamandhiram Sa VaasudEvO RangEsa: Prathyaksham Paramam Padham I VimAnam PraNavAkAram Vedasrungam MahAdhbhutham SrirangasAyee BhagavAn PraNavArthaprakAsaka : II
It is this Sri RangasAyee saluted by Upanishads that Saint ThyagarAjA implored to come to him at Srirangam in his celebrated KaambhOji Raaga Krtihi : Oh RangasAyee !pilachitE-Oh yanuchu raa raadhAA ? ( Oh Rangasaayee ! When I implore You to come to me , why should You not respond ?) . Saint Thyagaraja composed the Sriranga Pancharathna krithis on this Lord reclining on Adhi SEshA at Srirangam . We will salute those 5 krithis in the next posting .

“A yogi keeps his head in solitude (self) and his hands in society (work)”. “Activity is not merely for material result, but for inner fulfillment or growth. Yoga is thus a term used in
conjunction with karma to show the change from deficiency-motivation to growth-motivation. Kaamya
karma – nishkaama karma – naihkarmyam”.
“Krishna neither rationalises nor brings about any change in the circumstances facing Arjuna, but only changes the
outlook of Arjuna through the higher vision envisaged to him. This change is called right perception of things – a
congruence of wisdom and work”.
21
1. Introduction: 1. Before we present this essay on Gita‟s karma yoga triangle, it is, perhaps, necessary and
worthwhile to draw the attention of the reader to an observation of Krishna, at the very start chapter of chapter 4, after his exposition of karma yoga in chapters 2 and 3, presented in the
introduction to this study. The proper understanding of this observation will help the right appraisal and understanding of the subtle points in the Gita Sermon in general and of this essay in particular. Krishna‟s observation referred to implicitly admits that the original wisdom of the s’rutis has been distorted. That was the position even at that distant period.
So it can be inferred that the purpose of Krishna‟s unilateral assertion on the restatement of the original Vedanta tenets is to present the truth of the matter and to reconcile the seemingly contradictory statements of the s’rutis. This obviously means that we have to take
the Gita version wherever they seem to be contradictory to the generally interpreted and understood statements of the s’rutis. This is an important aspect and is not to be missed in the understanding and interpretations of the Gita Sermon. This explains why the Gita Sermon is most unequivocal and presented in the simplest language possible. “Every one who came upon something new had to claim its origin in the Vedas, the Upanishads and the Brahmasutra. And for this reason right interpretations of these scriptures became difficult.
Everyone indiscriminately imposes his own ideas and interpretations in these helpless scriptures…. The same has been the fate of the Gita. Whoever wants to have his say claims the support of these scriptures, and does everything in his power to impose his meanings on them…. Please bear in mind that the seers of Vedas and the Upanishads do not seek any
support for themselves, they say on their own whatever they have to say”. – (Osho – “Krishna – The man and His Philosophy”.): 2. Krishna‟s way of defining jnaana (referred to in the previous essay and discussed in detail
in essay 19) seems to indicate that what is meant by the term jnaana, as a means to
liberation (mukti), is knowledge in a special sense known as upaasana or devotion. It is not
mere intellectual understanding of the term jnaana, as defined, namely, as the
understanding of the difference and distinctness of kshetrajna or purusha (self) and kshetra
or prakriti (body) but to become what one knows. This is immensely more difficult and
would always remain unverified unless this perceived knowledge is lived too in active
life. By successfully cultivating the twenty values (virtues) enumerated in (13.7 – 11),
defined as jnaana, the saadhaka attains wisdom by virtue of eradication from his heart all
contrary values (ignorance), the cause of his ego, which causes – pride, anger, greed,
possessiveness and all kinds of misconceptions. He gradually understands that all learning
pertaining to the phenomenal world is partial, uncertain and relative. Supreme devotion to
the Deity is the only true, permanent and absolute knowledge. This is upaasana (bhakti).
What one knows to be really true has to emerge out of him as action. This is wisdom
(vijnaana). Thus karma yoga becomes a means of self – purification (aatma- s’uddhi) to
help further progress towards aatma – avalokana – the goal of self – realisation and
subsequent God – realisation. Hence Krishna immediately after explaining the first step
deals with karma yoga – the practical application of the first step.
Bakthi or devotion is just offering our mind to Sriman Narayana. Through this, impurities in us as our actions, thoughts and words will be removed totally. Then all desires and aversions will not find any path to enter our minds to pollute. We will also be able to keep our mind in control automatically ,which will result in getting peace and intellectual capacity. The desire for sense objects can never be cured without contemplation of the self. The control of mind is needed for the condition of firm mindedness which could be possible only through our Bakthi . It can be said as steady mindedness itself is fruition of Bakthi. There are seven pre-requesites for Bakthi.or devotion. 1.Viveka- Discrimination -purification of body by taking only the sattvik natured good food. 2. Vimoka- Renouncing desires totally , and not worrying about the fruits of the actions done 3. Abhyasa- Practicing frequently in worship of Sriman Narayana with complete dedication. 4. Kriya- Working properly in accordance with the prescribed types norms and procedures. . 5. Kalyana- Auspiciousness of following truth, integrity, compassion, benevolence, ahimsa etc. 6. Navasota - Forgetting the past and being without worries of disappointment and
displeasure. 7. Anuddharsa - Stable situation of sthitha pragnan stage avoiding feelings of joy and sorrow. For such Bakthi easiest way is Divya Nama smaranam as found in Sri Vishnu Sahasranamam. Dharma sthothram has so far dealt with 90 namas in 50 parts.
The 91st nama is Samvatsara which means He who is the personification of the year. Samvatsara in Sanskrit denotes only the year. The Tamil Panchangam followed by all Hindus
26
starting from Chitrai is adopting names for every year which is 60 in number. This 60 samvatsarams is repeated in next cycle . It is said as Prabhava to Vyaya attributed to Brahma in first group,. Sarvajith to Parabhava is for Vishnu and the last 20 years Plavanka to Akshaya is for Siva. As Sriman Narayana lives in the heart of His bakthas preparing always to protect them throughout the year, and throughout the life, He is called as Samvathsara. Samvatsara uthsavam such as Pavithra utsavam, Brahmotsavam , Adhyayana utsavam, Parivettai or Thotta utsavam, Teppotsavam are being celebrated in all Vaishnava temples as found in this gathyam as " Nityotsava, pakshotsava, samvatsarotsava:"., .
Sriman Narayana is the lord of all, the source of all, and all beings are belongings of Him only. But with attachment of material joys and in our Karma palams we ignore its importance ,in spite of knowing all Avatharams done by Him only for our benefit and knowledge. Seeing that Lord with great auspicious qualities, in this world which is subject to time (Samvatsarams ) , Periazhvar had worries even about Sriman narayana as what might happen to Him. Therefore he started telling as "Let him live long for years " and performs mangalashasanam to Him that His beauty be protected for as long as time is there. He speaks of the benefit that those who recite this prabandham will get and performs managalshasanam to them. Periazhvar says that the samsaris who do not even qualify for the above groups, will also join forever those who do mangalashasanam, by simply reciting this prabandham. The word Pallandu, means for many countless years of humans, of devas,of Brahma, that is, for all time be protected. If a devotee is not intelligent enough to make progress on the path of self realisation but is sincere and devoted to the activities of devotiona service , the lord gives a chance to make progress in successive attempts and ultimately attain to Him.
The next 92nd nama is Vyala, means as one accepting the devotees like Anjaneya or Vibishana in Srimad Ramayanam . This nama is also known as one who cannot be caught like the great serpent, an elephant or a tiger. He is one who assures and accepts His devotees by sending His representatives to them. Rama who lost His kingdom and just staying with monkeys said as "I am going to offer protection without reserve to anyone who just comes and says as ""Please ' I do not want anything more.I can protect them in all dangers ,aggressions and enemies. This shows the height of unimaginable benevolence of Lord Rama.In Srimad Valmiki Ramayana VI.18.34 Aanayainam hari reshta dathamasya bhayam maya Rama asked to bring Vibhihana . He said as He gave
Abhayam to him already. His principle much more thorough than this and even a drastic one Even if Ravana himself came and sought His protection He would happily embrace Ravana and give total protection to him. He said as "I cannot desert Vibhishana who has come as a friend. Even if there is any wickedness in him, his acceptance is not unworthy in the eyes of good people. Similar to this there are many episodes in every incarnations and so Vyala is aptly finding place in Vishnu Sahasranamam showing the mercy of Sriman Narayana.
To be continued......

Then Banasura kept Anirudha in a jail.
Though Usha cried and begged, Banasura did not accept her wish.
In the meanwhile everybody were worried because Anirudha was
missing from the palace in Dwaraka. That time Narada came there and
told where is Anirudha.
Then all the Vrishnis were went to Sonidapuram with Krishna. They
attacked the fort and destroyed all the places. Siva who was guarding
that place came to fight with Krishna. Bana also with his troup came
and attacked Vrishnis.
Rudra sat on his bull, Muruga on his peacock started fighting.

O Lord, you are the beloved of your devotees, you are of the colour of sapphire,
listen to what we want from you after our sacred bath in the month of margazi
following the tradition set out by our elders. We want conches like your milk-
hued panchajanya which causes tremor for the whole world with its sound, great
drums, people who sing pallaAndu, beautiful lamps, flag and canopies. You who
recline on the banyan leaf, please grant us all this.
This pasuram is the 26th. It signifies the Lord, who is paramathma. There are 24
thathvas or evolutes of prkrthi, the primordial nature and 25th is the jeevathma
denoted as purusha who is implied by the last pasuram
'orutthimaganaippirandhu' This pasuram refers to the paramathma ,the 26th. It
also denotes the ashtakshara manthra which is 8=2+6.The number 2 stands for
the dhvaya manthra and the number 6 denotes the six padhas of the dhvaya
and also the six angas, limbs of prapatthi.
mAlE- He is having vathsalya for His creations and hence comes now and then
as incarnations to see to their welfare.
maNivaNNA-He is having the colour of a blue sapphire, indhraneelamaNi, as
described by almost all devotee-saints like Desika, Narayanabhattadri and
Thyagaraja.
mElaiyar seivanagaL- the austerities and charities as shown by the elders.
They ask for six things:
1.sangam-conch like panchajanyam of the Lord.
2.parai-drum
3.pallAndisaipAr-the group who sing pallandu, when the Lord is taken on a
procession, the composition of Preriazvar, which marks the beginning of the
Nalayiradivyaprabandham. It is a benediction for the Lord Himself.
Periazvar won the argument in the court of the Pandyan king solely due to the
grace of the Lord at whose command he went though he did not know anything
except to offer garlands and sing to the Lord. Then the king mounted him on the
elephant and set him on a procession. The Lord Koodalazagar of Madurai
manifested Himself in front of Azvar seemingly to watch His devotee honoured
thus. Not realising that the Lord appears only to him, the azvar sang pallandu,
as a protection for the Lord from evil eyes. such was the vathsalya he felt
towards the Lord.
30
4.Kola viLakku- The ornamental lamps that are carried in a temple procession.
5.kodi- the flag that is carried when the Lord comes on procession
6. vithanam- the canopy on the top.
Of these, three lines are allotted for the conch alone may be because,
1. it is equivalent to the pranava which has three mathras, a,u, and m.
2. Panchajanya was born in the sea, grew into the body of the asura panchajana
and finally reached the hand of the Lord.
3.Krishna also was born in Madura, grew in Gokula and migrated to Dvaraka.
pOyppAdu udaiyana- Panchajanya has a wide interior.
4.We are born from the womb of the mother and grow into a devotee through
the wide jnana given by praNava, signified by Panchajanya and finally reach
Vaikunta.
5.The white coloured conch is supposed to give loud sound. The white colour
also denotes satthva which is the great sound that enters the heart (hari enra
pEraravam uLLam pugundhu-pasuram6) and drives out the rajas and
thamas.
SAlapperumparai -The drum which is large and sounds loud so that no other
talk will be heard and the mind will be completely absorbed in the divyamangala
svarupa of the Lord.
Krishna might have said that his panchajanya is only one and how can He give it
to them and also they wanted many, (sangangal) and Andal replies by calling
him 'Alin ilaiyay' one who slept on a banyan leaf, meaning that nothing is
impossible for him. He can create, sustain and annihilate the world, all can be
done through the sound of his conch alone, as it is synonymous with pranava.
When Krsihna blew his conch before the battle all the kouravas were already
destroyed and the actual battle was only a drama through his leela.
The banyan tree is calpable of giving shade to whole army.( aNnal yAnai aNi

Need for a preceptor When Rama is banished to the forest for 14 years by Dasaratha, He obeys instantly, and leaves for the forest, accompanied by Sita and Lakshmana. In the forest, Guha, the hunter, meets Rama and offers food to Him. But Rama does not eat what is offered. Rama's explanation is that since He has to live in the forest as hermits do, it would not be right for Him to partake of food that hermits do not take. Hence, having undertaken to live like a hermit, Rama politely turns down Guha's offerings of food. He then drinks some water brought to Him by Lakshmana and lies down to sleep. But later when Sabari
offers Him fruits, Rama accepts her offerings. He has not given up the life of a hermit by then. He still continues to live a life of austerity.
How could He then accept Sabari's offering of fruits, when He had cited His ascetic life as the reason for turning down Guha's offer? The answer lies in the fact that Sabari had a preceptor, whom she had served diligently, said V.S.Karunakarachariar, emphasising the need for every individual to have an Acharya.
One has to seek the Lord only through a preceptor, and that is what Rama indirectly shows through His acceptance of Sabari's offerings of fruits. Sabari has served Sage Matanga, and has been asked to await the arrival of Rama. When Rama and Lakshmana come to the hermitage, Sabari welcomes them. Upon their request she shows them round. Finally, she requests that she be permitted to depart from this world so that she may join her preceptors. She then offers herself as oblation in the fire, and she ascends from the fire towards Heaven.
Sabari had sincerely served Sage Matanga. It is incumbent on everyone to seek a preceptor, and to serve him well, with all due humility. To seek salvation without the help of a preceptor will not yield the desired result. Salvation is not granted to one, who overlooks the role of a preceptor and approaches God directly.
That is the lesson that the Sabari episode shows us in the Valmiki Ramayana. Guha too adored the Lord, and yet the Lord cited His life as a hermit to refuse his offerings. But the same Lord partook of Sabari's offerings, because she had served the sage Matanga.
