2. Atoms The smallest unit studied in Biology What is the relationship between atoms and elements? Elements A pure chemical substance consisting of one type of atom 3. Molecules Made of one or more atoms bonded together What is the relationship between molecules and compounds? Compounds A pure chemical substance consisting of two or more elements These elements can be separated by chemical reactions 4. Carbohydrates Sugars and Starches Carbon, Hydrogen and Oxygen Lipids Fats, Oils and Waxes Carbon, Hydrogen and Oxygen (Nitrogen and Phosphorus in some) 5. Proteins Carbon, Hydrogen, Oxygen, Nitrogen and Sulfur Nucleic Acids DNA and RNA Carbon, Hydrogen, Oxygen, Nitrogen and Phosphorus 6. A combination of two or more substances where each substance retains its properties A homogenous mixture (one phase) where one substance is dissolved in another is a Solution 7. If the mixture is temporary and will eventually separate its a Suspension If the substances dont separate and the mixture is not homogenous its a Colloid 8. The organs of cells! Composed of molecules/compounds Carry out specific functions inside the cell 9. The smallest functional unit of life What does the cell theory state? What do all cells have in common? 10. Animal cells and Plant cells! What is the difference? Plant cells have cell walls Plant cells have chloroplasts (for photosynthesis) 11. Groups of cells with a similar structure or function 4 types in animals Epithelial Connective Muscle Nervous 12. Covers organ surfaces Covers the surface of Skin, airways, reproductive tract, digestive tract Cells are tightly packed together Acts as a barrier 13. Cells separated by non-living tissue Gives shape to organs and holds them in place Supports and holds other tissues together Examples? 14. Used to produce force and cause motion What kind of movement does your body produce? (Hint: 3 different kinds) 15. Transmits messages in the form of an impulse What kind of messages? (2) What is made of nervous tissue? 16. A group of tissues that performs a specific function or a group of similar functions Review: What is an organelle? 17. A collection of organs performing a specific function One organ system depends on other organ system (cannot function independently) 18. Nervous Skeletal Muscular Digestive Circulatory and Lymphatic Excretory (Urinary) Integumentary Respiratory Endocrine Reproductive Immune 19. What is an organism? Possesses the Characteristics of Life Performs simple acts of survival Now we move into the field of Ecology 20. Population Group of organisms same species, same place same time Community Group of interacting organisms multiple species, same place, same time 21. Ecosystem Community of organisms + the environment Biotic + Abiotic Biome Major regional or global community of organisms Usually characterized by climate Biosphere Area of a planet where all life occurs A self-regulating closed system 22. http://www.scaleofuniverse.com/
