At that hearing, the court will decide whether enough evidence exists to warrant a trial. Lynch was arraigned Wednesday, Feb. 8, on three counts of murder. If Lynch stands trial, a jury could find him guilty of any of the three counts, if convicted, each count carries a mandatory life sentence. BILL SUGGESTS THAT ENGLISH BE THE OFFICIAL STATE LANGUAGE A bill has currently been introduced by Representative Jack Hoogendyk of Kalamazoo in a committee of the state house that would make English the official language of the State of Michigan. According to Hoogendyk, immigrants who enter this country need to learn English. He argues that catering to other languages is simply too expensive, costing the state millions of dollars. SURVEY REPORTS FEMALE GRADS' SALARIES A 2003 graduate survey revealed this month that female Hope grads receive significantly less salary than male counterparts within the same discipline. The survey also discovered that of respondents who said they were dissatisfied with their employment, 50 percent had salaries less than $22,000 per year. The survey initially started in the early 1980^. It is a one page survey containing 20 questions that assess recent graduates' careers and factors that impact their jobs. '06 BUDGET THREATENS HOLLAND'S AMTRAK LINE Shannon Craig S T A F F W R I T E R Hope students who use Amtrak might need to start looking for some transportation alternatives. The Michigan Legislature voted on a bud- get that decreased Amtrak funding by ap- proximately $1 million in September 2005. This budget change causes services on the Pere Marquette and Blue Water lines to end in August 2006 for the current fiscal year, which ends Sept. 30, 2006. This would mean about a month lapse in train service, which would be reinstated in the following fiscal year. The Pere Marquette, which runs from Grand Rapids to Chicago, and the Blue Water, which runs from Port Huron to Chicago, are the two trains that the state of Michigan helps support. The Pere Marquette connects Grand Rapids and Chicago with slops in Holland, Bangor, St. Joseph-Benton Harbor, and New Buffalo. The ending of the Pere Marquette service route during September 2006 will leave many Hope students looking for alter- native methods to and from Hope. "It is my only way home. I would have to thoroughly exercise all my resources in hopes that I can make it home," R.J. Casey ('09) said. No visible consideration was given to the fact that the Pere Marquette services Hope College students, and also students at other schools such as Aquinas College, Calvin Col- lege, Central Michigan University, and Michi- gan State University. According to Mike Whims, the executive committee chair of Michigan Association of Railway Passenger, both of the train lines are always considered together in legislation because they are seen as a combined service under the current Amtrak contract. "It's not a funding cut. It's a transfer of funding allocation," said an Amtrak media re- lations representative. "There is a movement in the State Legislature to move the money so that the trains can run through the rest of the SEE A M T R A K , PAGE 4 r ' J PHOTO EDITOR JAPED WlLKENING CAR CATCHES FIRE ON 14TH STREET FAITH MEETS WORLD Students, faculty share in Calvin's "International Development" conference Erin L'Hotta EDITORHN-CHIEF On Feb. 20 a female student's vehicle caught on fire while driving near the intersection of 14th Street and College Avenue. Holland Fire Department arrived immediately on the scene to put out the fire. Col- lege Avenue flooded and filled with heavy smoke from the accident. Holland Police Department assisted in the accident by block- ing College Avenue between 14th and 15th Street. Carolyn Nichols G U E S T W R I T E R More than 300 students lis- tened to a message on their role in social justice at the "Faith and In- ternational Development" confer- ence, held from Feb. 9 to Feb. 11. The Gezon Auditorium at Calvin College was filled to capacity. Thirty-three Hope students and faculty forfeited part of their win- ter break to go to the conference. "This conference really dem- onstrated that it is not merely doctors and pastors who can minister to the world. Rather, po- litical science, business people, engineers and others all have a place in working towards inter- national development," David Nyitray ('07) said. The conference consisted of six plenary sessions over the three days, smaller breakout sessions and free time to talk to speakers and students. Each plenary and session breakout focused on a different aspect of international development. "When you work with people in poverty, there's something about their faith and hope that strengthens you," said Andy Rysk , representing Christian Reformed World Relief Committee. Each presenter encouraged the college students to not lose sight of the passion they have for social justice and the "least of these" (Mt 25). They commended the students who birthed the idea for the conference and those who saw it to completion. Hope students also applauded their efforts. "I think that perhaps the most amazing thing about the confer- ence was the fact that it was orga- nized by students. Within a peri- od of one year, this small group of Calvin students was able to orga- nize six plenary sessions and 24 different breakout or small group sessions," Hope student Kathleen Ludewig ('06) said. The speakers shared an over- whelming message of encourage- ment. Each organization remarked on the promise of the impact pas- sion-filled youth could make. "Just don't give up; we need you out there," said Myles Fisch, President of International Aid. The passion for social justice is spreading across Christian cam- puses. Representatives from Tay- lor University, Messiah College, and Calvin, among many others gathered in special meetings dur- ing the conference to figure out ways to continue meeting. The conference gave new in- sight to students seeking a way to share their gifts. For two weeks, six faculty members will compete against each other for the privilege of laying claim to the prestigious title "ugli- est faculty on Hope's campus, " as well as an undisclosed prize. Professors Jill VanderStoep, Charles Be- hensky and SonjaTrent-Brown of the psychol- ogy department, and professors Jack Ridl, Ste- phen Hemenway and William Pannapacker of the English department have already entered into the contest. Alpha Phi Omega took pictures of the par- ticipating professors, who dressed and posed in a uniquely creative and ugly way. They then attached these pictures to a series of jars. How long will the "Dutchmen" still fly?

To t h e Editor: H o p e Col lege is in the process of looking for a new

mascot . Some students agree it is about t ime the school has

a mascot to go with the name the Fly ing D u t c h m e n . T h e

n a m e the Flying Dutchmen c a m e f rom a sports reporter

w h o wrote in the Ancho r that Hope ' s basketball players

w e r e flying across the court in one game . Put that together

with Du tchman and you have the Flying Dutchman .

Since then, the Flying Du tchmen has been the off icial

name of the school ' s mascot . T h e quest ion remains : is it

really a mascot that w e need, or is it a n e w name? Af te r

doing some research on the n a m e the Fly ing Du tchmen ,

upon hear ing var ious rumors surrounding it, I found out

that some of these rumors are actual ly true. Af te r search-

ing var ious websi tes and on-l ine encyclopedias , 1 learned

that all the webs i t es say the s a m e thing.

T h e Fly ing Du tchman is not the great man that the

school mode l s itself after. So I am here to put an end to all

of the gossip, and the wonde r and give you , the readers,

the real s tory of the F ly ing Dutchmen .

called Vanderdecken (mean ing on deck) w a s the com-

mande r of the ship the "F ly ing D u t c h m a n " which was set

to sail a round the C a p e of G o o d Hope. T h e capta in v o w e d

that he would m a k e this voyage and nothing or no one

could s top him, even G o d . Af te r a mass ive s torm befell

the ship, horrible c r imes had taken place on board, and

the c rew w a s infected with the plague and not a l lowed to

sail into any port. M a n y of the c r ewmember s wanted to

In the spirit of beating a dead horse...

turn back but the captain refused . H e w a s said to

be dr inking and playing cards with the devil at the

very momen t a shadowy figure appeared on board

the ship. The figure told the captain that he w a s a

s tubborn man. T h e captain answered By saying he

never asked for a peace fu l passage and to clear of f

before he shot h im. When the figure did not move ,

the captain drew his pistol and tried to fire but the

gun exp loded in his hand. T h e figure spoke again

reveal ing h imse l f as G o d . H e told the captain that

he was cursed to sail the Cape of G o o d Hope until

j u d g m e n t day with a crew of deadly men , br inging

death to anyone w h o looked upon the ship.

There have been several plays and operas writ-

ten about this story, and even a movie in 1951

where the ship is a yacht . In this story the on ly

w a y the captain can break the curse if sai l ing for

eterni ty is if he finds a w o m a n that will truly love.

W h e t h e r you wan t to be l ieve that the story is

true, or that it is a myth or a legend, the s tory still

r emains the same. The Flying Du tchman is not the

type of person that should represent our Christ ian

school . When the t ime c o m e s to turn in your vote

fo r a new mascot , think of a new name as well .

To the Editor: In the spirit of bea t ing a dead horse , I would like to

briefly highlight the p rob lem w e have at Hope with

at tract ing "d ive r se" s tudents . A s m u c h as w e m a y l ike to

believe diversi ty c o m e s from the color of o n e ' s skin, in the

m o d e m day U.S., i t ' s far more likely to c o m e f r o m one ' s

soc io-economic background. Le t ' s be ser ious fo r a minute :

h o w much variat ion can c o m e from a g roup of people w h o

were all b o m into upper midd le class famil ies , no mat ter

wha t their skin color? Sure , maybe some wen t to a private

school instead of public or m a y b e some grew up in a b lue

state instead of a red state, but the point r emains that it

doesn ' t really matter. If this c a m p u s wants diversi ty in thought , bel ief ,

cus toms , whatever , w e need to look to those people w h o

haven ' t had the s a m e oppor tuni t ies and exper iences as

everyone else at Hope. N o w I ' m not advoca t ing g iv ing

ful l - r ides to a bunch homeless people (even though it would

br ing diversi ty) but someth ing does need to be done .

And if w e wan t m o r e than another r andom compla in t

abou t h o w the system isn ' t work ing then I ' l l o f f e r m y

advice, too: look abroad.

I t ' s less r idiculous than it might seem. It might

appear counter- intui t ive based on current political

issues, but there are m a n y s tudents in foreign

countr ies w h o wou ld love to be educated in the

U.S. , and some countr ies even pay their s tudents

to go abroad.

So focus more on Asia , Afr ica , Latin Amer ica

and less on Grand Rapids , Lansing and Chicago.

I would guarantee campus would become more

diversi ty in every way. Cer ta inly this i sn ' t as

s imple or easy as H o p e ' s current plan (which i s . . . ? )

fo r at tract ing diversi ty to campus and the students

w e attract might be f r o m the upper -middle class,

but i t ' s diversi ty that can a f ford to pay 30k a year

and still o f f e r a comple te ly d i f ferent perspect ive

on our wor ld .

REFLECTING

ON FOUR YEARS

Nixon Omollo COLUMNIST

T h e Unce r t a in ty of T o m o r r o w Human beings are habitual creatures . There fo re per iods of

transit ions in our l ives are usual ly diff icult t imes. T h e soon-

c o m i n g graduat ion is a t ime of exc i tement for all graduates.

However , inside w e have di f ferent concems . Graduat ion is

really a t ime of panic and horror for m a n y because mos t peo-

ple haven ' t heard any th ing f rom the grad schools that they

applied to. Others haven ' t secured j o b s that they hope to and

o thers s imply don ' t have plans.

I w a s in the pool of panic-s t r icken people relentlessly

looking fo r emp loymen t until a f r iend of mine recently con-

fided in me. In the process , she opened m y eyes to the great

fu ture that lies ahead.

She had tears in her eyes , confused and dishear tened. She

compla ined that she did not k n o w wha t to do because her

a f te r -graduat ion life was very uncertain. She asked m e what

m y plans were and I told her what I ' ve told m a n y other peo-

ple, " I ' l l work fo r a wh i l e and go back to school ."

She said that I seemed very confident and comfor tab le . 1

took the compl iment , but the truth was that I was jus t as wor-

ried but I w a s better at h id ing m y emot ions .

Her interest in academics had faded away, she said, and

over t ime and all she wanted to do w a s write music , which

has a lways been her greatest pass ion. Her parents have been

pressur ing her to focus m o r e on books and less on mus ic . She

o f t en fal ls as leep w h e n she tries to s tudy but frequently stays

up all night coming up with n e w lyrics and songs.

In the height of her emot ions , she asked m e to play a tune

on the gui tar because she had to let her pain out. She w a r m e d

up her voice as I tuned m y guitar. She f ree-s tyled, express-

ing her innermost fee l ing of insecurity and frustration. She

had the kind of voice that sent chil ls d o w n m y spine and

a presence so magnet ic that I unconsc ious ly started singing,

a long. The lyrics w e r e so power fu l that it w a s hard to bel ieve

that she had jus t m a d e them up. Surely she has a cal l ing as

a music ian .

In these f ew minutes , she had broken a barr ier wi th in m e

that takes most people years to break. Finally, I told her about

m y c o n c e m s too. I told her h o w mos t employers prefer not

to hire in temat ional s tudents because of the extra paperwork

and legal issues they have to deal with. I told her that I have

been act ively searching and interviewing but nothing posi-

t ive has c o m e up. Fur thermore , m y brother, w h o has had me

under his w i n g s for a whi le , is mov ing out of t own in the

summer , so I have to be employed by the t ime he moves

out . M y situation made her feel bet ter about herself because

at least she has her immedia te fami ly around. To encourage

ourselves, w e reflected on t imes in our l ives w h e n w e felt

hopeless but s o m e h o w th ings worked out.

We concluded that worry ing does not so lve anything.

With l ime, every th ing will be all right. The key is push ing on

and keep ing the d reams big and alive. When the t ime is right,

th ings W I L L work out .
