The University of Stuttgart is the German operations centre for a joint US-German project between NASA and the German Aerospace Centre (DLR): SOFIA. The Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy allows scientists to observe the birth of stars and solar systems. The centrepiece of the modified Boeing 747 SP is a German high-performance mirror telescope with a diameter of 2.7 metres.
