John 3:16 John 17:3 Rom 1:16-17 For I am not ashamed of thegospel, for it is the power of God for salvation toeveryone who believes, to the Jew first and alsoto the Greek. For the word of the cross is folly to thosewho are perishing, but to us who are being saved it isthe power of God. . . . For since, in the wisdom ofGod, the world did not know God through wisdom, itpleased God through the folly of what we preach tosave those who believe. 6. What Is the Gospel? What Is the Gospel? John 3:16 John 17:3 Rom 1:16-17 1 Cor 1:17-24 1 Cor 15:1-11 2 Cor 5:14-15 2 Cor 5:18-20 All this is from God, who through Christreconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry ofreconciliation; that is, in Christ God was reconciling theworld to himself, not counting their trespasses againstthem, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation. Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making hisappeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, bereconciled to God. 9. What Is the Gospel? What Is the Gospel? The End of Sin Freed from death thru Christ The Beginning of Salvation Life w/ God thru Christ 13. What Is the Gospel? The End of Sin Romans 8:1-4 There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death. For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do. By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh, in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. 14. How can we say, The End of Sin? Because of the realm of the service (9:23-28) In Heaven itself (the realm of the true, not copies) In the presence of God (literally, before His face) A present reality as sure as His previous appearance At the end of ages (literally, completion/consummation) Center-point / tipping-point of history What both heaven & earth was waiting for Initiatory the purification in Heaven initiated Gods new and final way of dealing with His creation through Christ 15. How can we say, The End of Sin? Because of the realm of the service (9:23-28) Because of the sufficiency of the sacrifice (10:1-4) Impossible! (for blood of bulls & goats to take away sin)cf. 9:26 to reject, to render or regard as invalid, annulment Different words are used to distinguish what was accomplished by theblood of animals, and what was accomplished by the blood of Christ: to pass over, overlook, letting go unpunished (Rom 3:25) release, pardon, cancelation, doing away with, removing This latter word is used in Hebrews, both in 9:22 and 10:18 Better Holy (not just innocent 7:26), Non-creaturely (9:23) Himself Human, to stand in mans place (9:25, 26 cf. 2:14) On our behalf (9:24) with his own blood (cf. 9:25) Once for all / for all time (9:26 / 10:11-12) Sitting signifiesStretching to the whole length, full or entire duration completion 16. Probably fulfillment of entire Day of Atonement Lev 16 Perfect blood-sacrifice (sin-offering) Unique ministry of High Priest Entrance into Holy of Holies Removal of sin from community 17. How can we say, The End of Sin? Because of the realm of the service (9:23-28) Because of the sufficiency of the sacrifice (10:1-4) Because of the nature of the satisfaction (10:5-10) God never wanted sacrifice (neither desired, nor pleasing) Psa 50:8-13 Yet, A body you prepared for me cf. v. 10 Psa 51:16(not to be separated from the blood cf. 2:14) Isa 1:11 God always wanted obedience Deut 10:12-13 1 Sam 15:22Behold, I come to do your will. Because of the realm of the service (9:23-28) Because of the sufficiency of the sacrifice (10:1-4) Because of the nature of the satisfaction (10:5-10) Because of the witness of the Spirit (10:11-18) Stands in addition to the one-time sacrifice of Christ Given before the one-time sacrifice of Christ (Jer 31) Given as an active promise (though passive in form) To remember call to mind, recollection, hold place in consc. No more (no way, ever!) And Scripture cannot be broken! John 10:35 19. What Is the Gospel? The Right Sacrifice Better Holy (v 23) Himself Human (v. 26) On our behalf (v. 24) 20. What Is the Gospel? The Right Sacrifice In the Right Place Heavenly places (v. 23) Heaven itself (v. 24) In the presence of God (v. 24) 21. What Is the Gospel?
