OUR GREEN CREDENTIALS

Our green credentials are second to none.

Many of you will know all our loose-fill packaging is recycledcardboard. It is also a service to the local community who arepleased to bring in their boxes and see even less going into landfill. This card is shredded and compressed into excellent loose-fillpackaging and even better smoker fuel or garden mulch.

Our sawdust and shavings are compressed into briquettes. Theseare used to fuel our biomass combustion unit which heats ourfactory. All timber off-cuts are either delivered to local pensionersas fire kindling or given away to the public - none of it goes tolandfill.

The water used in our wax process is recycled through a chiller unitwith minimal waste and all office waste paper is finely shredded forprotecting foundation in transit. Our timber, obviously, is allsourced from sustainable forests both home and abroad.

For quality, service and innovation, there is only one choice.

THORNE BEEHIVES – THE COMPLETE EQUIPMENT SUPPLY COMPANY

NATIONAL HIVEYou will find this bottom bee spaced, single walled hive in use all over the BritishIsles. It is still the most popular by far. Attractively designed with substantial handholds that also accommodate the long lugs of the British Standard frame. The complete hive as shown comprises: open mesh floor, brood body with11 hoffman self-spacing frames (DN4) with wired premier foundation and dummyboard, Harmless queen excluder, two supers, each with 10 shallow frames (SN1) andwired premier foundation on metal castellated spacers, crownboard with 2 plasticporter bee escapes and galvanised metal covered 4” roof.

Observation PanelReplaces the inner wall of a standard National Hive allowing the beekeeper to seeinside the brood body without dismantling the hive. Supplied as individual panels orready assembled in a brood body. Made from unbreakable polycarbonate. Cleanwith hot water. Do not scrape with hive tool. Ply shutter included.

SpacingHoffman self spacing frames are standard in the brood body but you can alsospecify, narrow plastic or metal ends or even castellated spacers in the brood. We donot recommend this as manipulations in the brood are performed much quicker andsmoother if the frames can be slid along runners.Super spacing can be on wide or narrow plastic ends, hoffman self spacing orManley type frames. All our National Hives can be supplied as top bee space at an additional cost.

Queen excludersThe Harmless is now supplied as the standardexcluder option for a complete National Hive.Introduced by Thornes a few years ago. They haveproved a kinder and stronger alternative to thetraditional slotted steel.

The wire excluder comprises a grid of wire rodssecurely fastened in a wooden frame. Bee space onone side only.

The traditional slotted steel excluder is shown onpage 14.

Brood Bodies

The standard brood body is 87⁄8" deep. Some beekeepers, particularly in the south ofEngland, prefer a larger brood area. This results in a bigger brood nest for a strongercolony. The 14x12" brood body provides approximately 50% additional brood space.

FloorsOPEN MESH FLOOR – Supplied aspart of a complete hive or can bepurchased separately. Nowrecognised as the healthy option –better ventilation and varroamanagement.

VARROA FLOOR – Substantial floorwhich can be used both in theventilated or closed position. Ideal for varroa management.

SOLID FLOOR – still preferred bysome beekeepers. Photographshows the correct position of theentrance block.A further alternative – the Happy Keeper floor can befound on page 18.

SERVING THOUSANDS OF BEEKEEPERS ALL OVER THE WORLD – THORNE BEEHIVES

Hive StandThis stand with legs, lifts the hive 10” andwell clear of dampgrass, nettles, weeds, etc. Available inNational size only.

Sloping Hive StandThe sloping hive stand, available for all hives except the WBC, elevates the hive by21⁄2” and provides an excellent alighting board for introducing a swarm.

Glass Quilt and Polycarbonate Quilt

Two glass panels in woodenframe with 1 plastic porterescape.

A plain polycarbonate panel inwooden frame. Also available asshown with plastic porter escape.

Sloping Hive Stand on LegsThe Sloping hive stand on legs includes a set of legs, very similar to the WBC to giveyour hives a touch of class. It lifts the hive 6” off the ground and is very stable.

14"x12" EkeThe eke is a simple extension that fits on top of a normal brood body, providing theextra depth to take 14” x 12” frames.

Roofs3 different types: 4" deep; 6" deep and gabled design. The 4" deep roof is standard and suitable for use in most apiaries. The 6” deep roof offers more top insulation and is better suited to exposed areaswhere roofs may blow off in high winds. The gabled design illustrated provides the charm of the WBC with the practicality ofthe National.

A bit about Cedar

To preserve the wonderful colour and grain we recommend the use of insecticidefree clear Cuprinol (see page 7). It is also possible to use Linseed Oil. Cedar, however, does not require preservatives (although it will “grey” without). It has itsown preserving oils which protect it from the weather and discourage some otherinsects. The ideal timber for the British climate: light, aesthetic, aromatic and tough.N.B. For the painting of single walled hives, we recommend only the beehive paintshown on page 7. Using only normal household paint will seal the timber on theoutside and can cause mould and condensation problems on the inside.

All our full size hives are made from Western Red Cedarfrom sustainable sources. The use of timber for beehives is,we believe, essential in reducing our carbon footprint. Plastichives may offer certain advantages over timber but they arefar from environmental friendly and difficult to dispose of ifcontaminated in any way.

In the flat or ready assembledAll our hives, hive parts and frames are available in the flat or ready assembled.Purchasing them “in the flat” offers considerable savings both on the goods andcarriage charges. Each hive part is carefullychecked for knots, splitsand other timberdeformities before beingshrink wrapped with fullinstructions and nails.Glue is supplied withevery complete flatpacked hive. All packs of 10 frames aresupplied with a 10g bagof nails.

Crownboard/Clearer Board Plywood board in cedar framewith two plastic porter escapes.

You may prefer to try a glass orpolycarbonate quilt as analternative to the traditionalplywood crownboard.

Frames and FoundationBritish standard frames and foundation for use in National and WBC hives can befound on pages 10-12.

SERVING THOUSANDS OF BEEKEEPERS ALL OVER THE WORLD – THORNE BEEHIVES

LangstrothThe world’s most popular hive. It is used by manycommercial beekeepers in the UK for it’s larger broodbody, simplicity of design, ease of handling and readyavailability of commercial uncapping and extractionequipment. We can also supply the hive with a Jumbo brood bodyto accommodate extra deep frames. The complete hivecomprises: open mesh floor, brood body with ten selfspacing frames and foundation, wire queen excluder, two supers each with ten self spacing frames andfoundation, crownboard and 4" roof.

Modified DadantSimilar in construction and design to the Langstrothand also American in origin; the frames however aredeeper with a slightly wider spacing. The complete hivecomprises: open mesh floor, brood body with elevenself spacing frames and foundation, wire queenexcluder, two supers each with eleven self spacingframes and foundation, crownboard, 4" roof. The M.D. hive is the largest hive we produce and isone of the biggest in the world with a brood area ofalmost 4000 sq. ins. Also popular with commercialbeekeepers because of its large capacity. It can be veryheavy to lift and move around, even when supers areconcerned. The hive which Brother Adam usedexclusively at Buckfast Abbey is a twelve frame version.

SmithA popular hive, particularly in Scotland, developed byMr. W. Smith of Innerleithen, Peebles. It is well suitedto the weather conditions in the north and ideal formoving to the heather moors. Basically, Mr. Smithdeveloped a small Langstroth hive, incorporating allthe design features of that hive. The brood body andsuper frames of the Smith hive accommodate shortlugged British Standard frames and the same size offoundation as the National and WBC. The completehive comprises: open mesh floor, brood body witheleven self spacing frames and foundation, wire queenexcluder, two supers each with eleven self spacingframes and foundation, crownboard, 4" roof. Alsoavailable is a 14" x 12" brood body – ready assembledonly.

CuprinolThis version of Cuprinol is theonly clear insecticide freeproduct in their range. It givesdeep penetrating protection tosound wood against all typesof rot, decay and woodworm.Apply only to the externalsurfaces of your hive. One litrewill cover 8 square metres withtwo coats, enough thereforefor approximately five hives. Allow to dry thoroughly in the open air for a few daysbefore introducing bees.

Hamilton ConverterAn ingenious device for converting a National broodbody into a ten frame Commercial. The cedar parts aremachined to fit our pattern of hive and will fit snuglyinto the existing frame runner rebate of the brood box.

Commercial or 16" x 10"(Supers referred to as 16" x 6")A simple square hive for those who prefer a largebrood area. Floors, excluders, crownboards and roofsare all the same as the National Hive. Manybeekeepers, therefore, use National supers above the16" x 10" brood box, thus benefiting from a largebrood area with easy to manage frames and supers. The complete hive comprises: open mesh floor, broodbody with eleven self spacing frames and foundation, slotted steel queen excluder, two supers each witheleven self spacing frames and foundation, crownboard, 4" roof. A very popular hive in Irelandwith hobbyist and commercial beekeepers alike.

THORNE BEEHIVES – THE COMPLETE EQUIPMENT SUPPLY COMPANY

Wax Conversion and Straight SwapWe introduced our Wax Conversion service in 1996 and after four years of continuous growth in this field offered a Straight Swap service. The Conversion system provides for a lb. per lb. exchange of crude wax into refined foundation. The beekeeper pays for this on a per lb. rateto which we add a wiring charge if necessary. The Straight Swap is exactly as it sounds. You provide the wax and we swap it for PREMIERFOUNDATION, wired or unwired AND NO CASH CHANGES HANDS. For example, if you delivered to our factory 10 lbs. of beeswax we wouldprovide either 40 sheets of wired BS brood foundation or 50 sheets of unwired and your purse or wallet stays firmly closed! The advantages ofthis over a Conversion are obvious, you do not end up with far more foundation than you may really want and to all intents and purposes it is free!We would stress however that whichever service you choose the wax must be clean and free from dross, dead bees, honey and hive debris. We reserve the right to adjustweight if wax is deemed too dirty and refuse it unconditionally if we detect any PDB aroma. Please telephone our head office or one of our branches if large quantities areinvolved. Full details can be found in our current price list.

BEESWAX FOUNDATIONBeeswax sheets are available in two grades, standard and premier. Premier is our usual topquality wax blended from the finest British, Irishand Australian/New Zealand beeswax. This is thetop quality foundation which has been availablefrom Thornes for over forty years and on whichwe base our reputation as being the leadingmanufacturer of beeswax foundation in the UK.In 1995 we introduced our standard grade. This ismanufactured with blended beeswax from avariety of sources and has excellent colour andaroma. Our finished foundation is wired diagonally andthe one continuous length is embedded into thefreshly milled wax at an angle to the cells, eliminating any tendency to sag.Pictured right is new mum Sarah working on oneof our automatic wiring machines, the mostadvanced in the world. After careful checks, the wax is packed and sealedin polythene to help retain the delicate aromaand to keep it fresh. All foundation is packed inmultiples of ten, and is manufactured in allregular sizes, both in worker base and dronebase. Thin super for cut comb and sections isavailable in worker base only. Wired or plain-special sizes made to order.

Rolls of beeswax for foundation and candlesheet production. We have been making worker, drone baseand thin super foundation for almost 50years.

SERVING THOUSANDS OF BEEKEEPERS ALL OVER THE WORLD – THORNE BEEHIVES

Silicone Foundation PressMake your own beeswax foundation sheets. All stainless steel construction including hinges and hidden matrix, with silicone rubber cell formers.Cell sizes for apis mellifera mellifera (5.4mm wide) and apis mellifera scutellata (4.7mm wide) available.Makes sheets 420 x 245mm – suitable for British Standard, Commercial or Langstroth hives. Instructions for use1. Fill a large sink or other container with cold water.2. Place the hinged edge of the Press flat on a firm surface and slightly open the Press.3. Pour in the liquid wax until nearly full and squeeze shut, pouring away the excess wax.4. Put the Press into the water. After only 2-3 seconds, carefully open the Press underwater and remove the sheet of wax. This will need to be trimmed to the correct size.5. Remove the Press from the water and stand it open on its edges to allow water to run off.6. Give the Press a gentle rub with a kitchen towel to break up any water droplets. Alternatively the water could be made up of a soapy solution of washing up liquid which will

prevent water droplets forming.

Plastic FoundationLangstroth and BS sizes only, deep and shallow. Thesheets are beeswax coated to encourage comb building.Once drawn in the frame the combs are virtuallyindestructible, enabling the beekeeper to extract at highspeed without fear of the comb breaking up. It musthowever be pointed out that conditions for combbuilding must be near perfect for the bees to work thefoundation. Many commercial beekeepers use plasticfoundation now as a matter of course but we have heard that some, especially inAustralia and New Zealand, are reverting back to pure beeswax foundation.

Small Cell FoundationThis small cell foundation, 4.9mm cell size (BS Deepand Langstroth Deep only) may be an advantage inVarroa control. The best time to coax bees on to thesmaller cell size will be when comb building is at itsmost vigorous, a prime swarm is therefore idealexpecially if the swarm is stimulated with a feed ofsugar syrup or better still, honey.

Sheet-wax TrayA simple wooden tray that will assist inproducing thin wax sheets for use withour embossed rollers or foundationmatrix. Internal dimensions460x305mm.Method of use: Assuming a readysupply of liquid wax, the making of thinsheets is very simple. Soak the wholetray in water overnight before starting. After draining off excess water, pour agenerous amount of liquid wax onto the tray and roll it from side to side and back tofront allowing the surplus wax to run out of the front opening and back into itscontainer. The wax will set quite rapidly. With a blunt knife or rigid plastic spatula runthe blade around the inside corner and slowly peel away the thin wax sheet. Repeatthe process. Silicone spray can be used if the board starts to dry out.

Foundation Matrix and Silicone SprayThis simple tool will emboss the plainwax sheet produced in the tray above with the hexagonal cell shape.Place the thin sheet between the cellformers (preferably as soon as it has beenmade as it will still be warm and produce asharper and deeper cell).Roll out the impression using the rollerprovided or even an old clothes mangle.Matrix measures 280 x 430mm and will make sheets suitable for British Standard,Commercial, Langstroth and Dadant hives. If the wax adheres to the cell formers usesilicone spray as a release agent before starting the process.

Dummy BoardThese are made from 1⁄2" external plywoodwith cedar sides and top bars. DummyBoards are for closing the gap in the broodbody when the frames do not fit exactly, preventing heat loss and the build up ofbrace comb. All deep sizes available as wellas British Standard shallow.

Frame sizes and selection can appear at first glance to be very complicated. If you are a new beekeeper with either National or WBC hiveswe would recommend the use of SN1 frames in supers on castellated spacers and DN4 frames Hoffman self spacing frames in the broodbodies. The ‘S’ of frame notation means shallow and the ‘D’ deep.

SERVING THOUSANDS OF BEEKEEPERS ALL OVER THE WORLD – THORNE BEEHIVES

Hanging SectionsA convenient way of obtaining a few sections. Thehanging frame can be placed in a super occupying thespace of two frames. Hanging dividers must be used toprevent brace comb from being built onto theadjoining standard frames. Available in National sizeonly.

Section DividersDividers are placed between each row of sectionspreventing brace comb and ensuring an attractive levelcapping. Manufactured in 1mm white polystyrene.Suitable for four section size- National, Langstroth,Mod Dadant and WBC or three section size for Smith, older type of WBC racks and the Irish CDB hive. Theplastic dividers have the advantage of being easy toclean, no sharp edges and more importantly, they are‘warmer’ for the bees.

Section Racks and SpringsPurpose built full size racks for holding sections securely in the hive.Made in Western Red Cedar and available for all hives. Retaining spring included. They can be supplied either made up or ‘in the flat’.

Section Honey

Producing the finest honey is challenging butrewarding. Since there is only a small area for wax-working, bees are reluctant to use them. The keys tosuccess are:

Use a strong colony with plenty of young bees.(A swarm is ideal).

Give them no option but sections. Bees willwalk through many sections to fill emptyframes.

Know your honey flows. Put sections on as theflow is at its peak. Once filled, remove themquickly to avoid travel stains.

Don’t use a colony with much braula as thetunnels of the larvae disfigure the cappings.

Avoid honey which granulates quickly althoughsome claim to like solidified comb.

Store wrapped sections in a freezer to delaygranulation.

SectionsSections were once the most popular way of producing comb honey. In the early fifties EH Taylor of Welwyn would regulary ship over 2.5 million of these small wooden crates to Ireland for comb production. They are not as popular now but they are still the premium product for marketing combhoney. The grooved with split top type is sometimes called theEnglish pattern and takes the section squarefoundation. A three sided split type is also available, often called the Irish pattern. This is used with 3 or 4section length foundation, i.e. one sheet of foundationis slotted into 3 or 4 sections.

Complete Assembled Section Racks

Sections, whether traditional timberor round plastic type are the premier retail productfrom the hive, especially if produced from heatherhoney. These assembled racks will start you offadmirably in section production.

Round SectionsAll plastic section frames that will produce circularcombs. The bees seem to prefer this shape as there areno difficult corners to fill. Frames have built in dividers. All parts are reusable. The completed section ispackaged using rings, clear and opaque covers and thelabels to ‘tie’ the package together. Each frame holdsfour sections. NOTE: Round sections will only fit intosection racks NOT STANDARD SUPERS. (See page 32for labels).

Assembled FramesFrames may be purchased ready assembled, fitted withwired, unwired or thin super foundation. All sizes offrames are available assembled and, unless otherwiserequested, supplied with wired premier foundation.

Halfcomb SectionsThese half-comb cassettes have been very popular fora number of years in Australasia and the U.S.A.Each hanging rack holds 30 half-combs and fits snuglyinto a National or WBC super.

Easy access to the combs is vital for good combbuilding, there is, therefore, good peripheral access tothe rack as well as through the combs themselves.Once complete the rack can be removed and emptied. Each half comb has a separate clip on lid, seal this withclear sellotape, add one of our comb labels on page 38and that’s it, ready for sale. No section cases, cartons, transparent bags required. Each comb holds approx.12 oz.Refilling the rack is simplicity itself and takes less thana minute, try doing that with round or square sections. If using National place a shallow frame on a widespacing on one side and a dummy board on the otherto fill the voids andprevent brace comb.In a WBC super youwill only require adummy board to fillthe void.As an optional extrawe can supply a 5mmthick clear acrylic topcover, so that comb buildingcan be viewed at first hand.

Moving Bees

You may move bees simply to a new permanentlocation, to orchards for pollination or to goodnectar sources, such as oil seed rape, lime orheather. The essentials for moving hives are:-travelling screens for ventilation, a secure way offixing hive parts together and entrance closures. Ifpossible, prepare hives in advance. Remove fullsupers leaving one empty super if convenient.Remove the crownboard and replace with atravelling screen. Fix the hive parts with thefasteners of your choice – all will be secure ifproperly fitted. When bees have stopped flying, inthe evening or early morning, close the entrancewith foam closure, remove the roof and lift into yourvehicle. If the journey is hot, a half cup of water orweak sugar syrup poured on each colony will calmagitated bees. At the new site, set out the hives andreplace the roofs before opening the entrances.

SERVING THOUSANDS OF BEEKEEPERS ALL OVER THE WORLD – THORNE BEEHIVES

Swarm TrapThe Swarm Trap was developed with the hobbybeekeeper in mind who finds weekly inspections toremove queen cells almost impossible due towork/family commitments and unpredictable weather. How often have you been full of good intentions on aFriday night to inspect colonies over the weekend onlyto have your plans shattered by adverse weather. Inthese circumstances you can be sure a swarm wouldcome out the following week, whilst at work, andwould not be sitting contentedly on a low branchwaiting for your return! The swarm trap catches the queen as she leaves thehive during a swarm. It has been tested over the lastthree seasons with 100% success.Full instructions supplied. Patented.National size only.

Snelgrove BoardAll sizes available. Hinged doors on three sides aboveand below. Perforated steel mesh over central hole. Werecommend “Swarming, its Control and Prevention” bySnelgrove as the definitive work on swarm control.Snelgrove’s ingenious swarm control method issuitable for the beekeeper with a few hives in thegarden. It relies on splitting the colony andcontinuously bleeding young bees from a top broodbox to the lower part of the hive. Many variations inuse are possible – his first method is as follows:-Reorganise the hive with the queen on one frame ofopen brood, with other broodless frame, at thebottom, then a queen excluder, supers and finallyanother box with all the other brood frames. Four dayslater, put the Snelgrove board under the top box andmanipulate the entrances in sequence.Day 4: Open top left entrance.Day 7: Close top left, open bottom left and top right.Day 14: Close bottom left and top right, open bottom

right and top back.Queen cells in the top boxes should be destroyed and the two brood boxes later united.

First Year – Seasonal GuideJANUARY

Check that mouseguards are still in place. Keepan eye open for woodpecker damage and checkthat there is still good ventilation. Check storedcombs – a further application of sulphur strips maybe required. Pay subscription to your localBeekeepers Association.

Look out for details of our Winter Sale.

FEBRUARYCheck spare equipment and carry out

repairs/replacement before the active season.Check that there are still plenty of stores bychecking the weight of the hive. Provide fondant(not syrup) if they are short.

MARCHRemove mouseguards. Continue to check that

there are still plenty of stores. A small amount ofsyrup (1 part sugar to 1 part water) may be fed ifneeded. Watch for early pollen being gathered.Feed Nektapoll if pollen is scarce.

Ask us for a new price list.

APRILAt the first full inspection, check for worker

brood, eggs and young larvae. Mark queens ifdesired. Remove poor and old combs and replacewith new foundation. Put supers on hives beforehoney flow starts.

Visit our stand at the BBKA Conventionat Stoneleigh.

MAYMonitor Varroa mite levels throughout season

using floor screens or a fork to examine dronepupae. Apply control methods as necessary toreduce numbers of mites (see the FERA booklet “Managing Varroa” available atwww.nationalbeeunit.com). Begin swarm controlinspections, looking for queen cells and know whatto do when they are found. Go along to local apiarymeetings. Extract oilseed rape honey without delay.

JUNECheck that colonies do not get hungry if the

early honey crop is removed. Feed if necessary.Continue to monitor level of Varroa.

JULY Usually the height of the honey flow. Put on

supers. Harvest the crop.

AUGUSTSpeak to your local Association about co-

ordinating Varroa treatment – the more we treattogether, the more successful we will be.

SEPTEMBERFeed each colony with strong syrup (2 parts

sugar to 1 part water) adding Fumidil B if Nosemais present or suspected. Find out if diseasediagnosis is available locally and have a matchboxof workers from each hive tested for Nosema andAcarine.

OCTOBER

Check that each colony is ready for winter with:1) A good queen;2) Plenty of young workers;3) Good health;4) Plenty of honey/syrup and pollen.

Ensure hives are weathertight and secure. Fitmouseguards.

Neatcentral swiveljoint housestubular steel legs with rubber feet. Strong nylon seatfabric. Velcro wrap around fastener.

Happykeeper Floor First exhibited atApimondia in Sloveniain 2003. This is arevolutionary selfcleaning floor. Suitablefor National hives with12 brood framesspaced at 35mm (DN4Hoffman) or 11 DN4and a dummy board. Not suitable for a hivewith frames spaced onnarrow plastic or metalends as each framemust have a tube directly below it. This cannot beachieved with a 36.5mm (17⁄16") spacing. As the beesgroom themselves, lose bits of wax or propolis and ofcourse varroa mites the debris drops between theframes and the tubes and ends up on the ground. It is claimed that trials in the Paris area of France overthe past 12 years with this type of floor have kept hiveshealthy and virtually varroa free without any chemical, biological or manipulative controls.Further advantages of course are the elimination ofannual floor cleaning, good insulation properties of theplastic tubes yet allowing excellent ventilation.Made in Western Red Cedar.Download an extensive trial report atwww.apiculture.com/happykeeper/

SecateursGreat value by-passsecateurs. Keep them inyour Bee Tool-Tidy forevery apiary visit. Swarming and its ControlWatching a swarm is a glorious sight, but it is ourduty as beekeepers to minimise the nuisance thatour bees cause. Left to their own devices, colonieswill produce swarms – mainly in May, June andJuly, although not every colony will swarm everyyear. The first swarm contains the original queen, and perhaps half the workers (mostly youngones). Subsequent swarms may still emerge withvirgin queens.Any of the following will reduce the amount ofswarming but not eliminate it entirely.

1. Give plenty of room in the supers.2. Keep young queens.3. Give them foundation to draw out.4. Remove some bees and/or brood.

Swarming will not be prevented simply by1. Clipping the queen.2. Cutting out occupied queen cells.

There are numerous swarm control techniques. One of the most reliable is the artificial swarmwhich is described in every text. Examine eachbrood frame once a week for queen cells witheggs or larvae. If they are found, move the hive toone side, and put a new brood box and floor inthe same position. Put in the new box one frameof brood with the old queen, and fill it up withnew frames and foundation. The queen excluderand supers (with bees) go onto the new broodbox. The other portion of the hive may be locatedanywhere in the apiary. Flying bees go back to theold site. Cut out all queen cells, and one weeklater, cut out all the new queen cells, leaving oneopen one. This will produce the new queen. Ifincrease is not needed, the two colonies can bereunited later in the season.

Swarm LureSwarming is one of the beekeeper’s majorchallenges. There isn’t always enoughtime to carry out the necessaryprevention and control measures.Swarm Lure can capture manyswarms from your own hivesthus reducing loss of bees and honey due to swarming.Stray swarms from other hives in the area, if captured, will add to your hive count and honey yield and maywell prevent calls to “come get a swarm of bees”.Nasonov pheromone is released by workers to orientreturning forager bees back to the colony. To broadcast thisscent, bees raise their abdoment which contain the Nasonovglands and fan their wings vigorously. This is called “scentfanning”. Bees may do this at the hive entrance. Also, whenan airborne swarm begins to cluster, early arriving bees willscent fan to attract others.Synthetically produced Nasonov will attract swarms tounoccupied hive equipment or a swarm-catching box.Research shows that, on average, swarms from the area willoccupy 50-80% of catch boxes containing Nasonov (providedthere is a reasonable amount of swarming in the area).

Tidy TrayWhat a good idea. Have you ever got into a rowbecause of honey all over the kitchen floor. Or worsestill torn your car seats as you have used an up-turnedroof to transport wet supers. The Tidy Tray is theperfect solution to sticky problems.

Hand Truck3 in 1, 250kg capacity, flat bed,hand truck, or 45° angle truck.Heavy steel construction,pneumatic tyres. Large loadingplatform 445 x 245mm.

Electric Uncapping PlaneA heated and shaped blade is pushed up the comballowing the cappings to build up on the back of theblade. The temperature of the blade can be controlledby placing the end of the plane upright into aheatproof container with 1" of water in the bottom. The water will heat up to 100°C and will, therefore, provide a suitable temperature control for uncapping. When in use the fully covered side of the blade isuppermost to collect the cappings, as the blade ispushed upwards. You may find that a thin layer of waxseals itself over the open cell, this will not affect theextraction process.

Cold Uncapping KnifeStainless steel, 250mm hollow ground edge, extremely sharp. Works better if blade is heated in hot water.

Bingham Uncapping KnifeThe traditional shaped knife with cranked handle and honed edges.

Utility Uncapping KnifeStainless steel blade 340mm long. Cranked handle with shaped plywood hand grip. Honed and bevelled cutting edges on both sides of blade, which is 25mm wide. Overall length 480mm.

Laser Cut ForkThis fork is virtually unbreakable. It is incredibly strongwith laser cut, accurately spaced tines. Very sharp withside cutter for working comb hollows. Comfortable, moulded silicone handle. 205mm long, tines are 70mmwide. Steel is 2mm thick.

Plain ForkWooden handled fork with chrome plated shouldergripping 10 stainless steel sharpened needles 40mmlong.Overall length 220mm. 110mm hardwood handle.

Cranked ForkIdentical to the plain fork but with cranked, shapedneedles.

Plastic Uncapping ForkStill a popular and easy uncapping method. Use coldwith a zig-zag action cutting just under the cappings.Rinse occasionally in hot water and wipe dry. CrankedStainless steel needles assist in lifting cappings clear ofcomb. 210mm long, 70mm wide.

Uncapping RollerUncapping with a difference. Simply roll over the comband then extract in the usual way. The sharp spikespierce the cappings but do not remove them. Most ofthe wax stays in place until extraction and can befiltered out of the honey at a later date.340mm long. Roller is 95mm long and 55mm indiameter and made up of 20 rows of plastic pins with 20 pins per row.

Comb RakeA razor sharp blade provides the ideal tool for rakinggranulated comb back to the midrib. Alternatively to stimulate early colony development lightly rake the tool over capped stores. 225mm long,60mm wide. 120mm handle.

230mm blade,35mm wide

Steam Uncapping KnifeThis uncapping knife is super efficient and gets up totemperature within seconds once steam is generated.240mm long honed blade, 2 metre length hightemperature inlet and outlet tubing, brass pressurefittings. Complete with 10 litre condenser bucket. Canbe purchased with or without steam generator (seepage 43) as you may already have one of these withan Easi-steam. Please specify if left or right handedversion is required.

Slimline Electric KnifeMade in Italy. This very sharp lightweight knife, with260mm blade will make quick work of your uncapping. Hold the frame on a solid and secure surface. Tilt the top of the frame towards you slightly to

ensure that the sheets of cappings fall away fromthe frame.

With the blade at the top of the frame, move theknife down the frame just underneath the cappingsand allow them to fall into a collecting container.

The heat from the blade helps to remove thecappings: the knife does not need to be razorsharp.

Do not use lever to remove frames from supers!!

Wax/Honey SeparatorA stainless steel pail which will hold approximately 6kgs. Place under the uncapping tray outlet. As themixture cools, the wax floats on top of the honey. Thehoney can be poured off from the baffle spout.160mm high, 300mm diameter, 75mm long, 25mmdiameter spouts.

CarouselThe Carousel will greatly assist the uncapping andextraction process. This will accommodate 30 shallowframes prior to extracting. All stainless steel frameholders and draining pan with nylon drain valve.610mm in diameter, 1040mm overall height. 4mmdiameter stainless steel support frame.

Radial and Tangential Extractors:The Pros and Cons

What do these terms mean? In a radial extractor theframes are like the spokes of a wheel pointing outfrom the centre. In a tangential extractor they arearranged flat against the outside of the cage. In asmall extractor, the diameter of the barrel may notbe enough to fit the frames radially so tangential isthe only option. If the machine is large enough, theadvantages are usually with the radial type, as eachframe is only handled twice, on loading andunloading. In a tangential machine, each frame isloaded, spun to extract some honey from theoutside face of the comb, turned to extract all thehoney from the other side, then turned once againto finish the first side. The extra handling meansthat extracting tangentially is generally slower thanradially. However, if you want to extract heatherhoney, or a deep frame, then tangential is thebetter option. N.B. Always spin a tangential cagewith the bottom bars of the frame pointing towardsthe direction of rotation.

Radial & Tangential CageWe can supply eitherradial or tangentialUniversal Extractor cagesseparately. These can beused for renewing anold existing cage or forthe DIY beekeeper. Bothhave collars for fixing to12.7mm shafts and arecomplete with Allen keyand grub screws. Theradial diameter is405mm and the depth is380mm. The tangentialcage has a depth of455mm and is 375mmacross at its widestpoint. For largermachines we also havethe 12 frame cage with adepth of 400mm, collarsize of 12.7mm anddiameter of 495mm.

Your Choice of CageRadial: nine B.S. or Langstroth shallow, six Commercial (16" x 6") or M.D. shallow, or six Manley frames of any size. This cage will only take brood frames when screens are fitted.Tangential: six B.S. or Langstroth shallow, or three of ALL other sizes except 14" x 12".

Using our Radial Extractor

1. Place the uncapped frame into the extractor, the top bar lug located in the “D” section of the bottom ringand the other end between the upper forks.

2. Ensure that the cage is evenly balanced.3. Rotate the machine for several minutes slowly and then gradually increase the speed until honey can be

seen leaving the comb freely. Continue to spin for 2-3 minutes, increasing to maximum speed on the electricmachine or approx. one hundred turns on a manual machine.

4. Extraction time will vary considerably depending on the ambient temperature and the viscosity of the honey.N.B. Ensure the top bars of the frames are clear of any honey in the extractor.N.B. Do not reverse the RM motor while the cage is revolving.N.B. Use only a 3 amp fuse in the plug.

Pouring AidSimple and practical device in stainless steel to hold a bucket or tin on top of a honey tank for draining purposes. Will fit virtually all sizes of honey tank.

Nylon Honey Valve

Stainless Steel ValveA Thorne produced stainless valve with accurate cutoff. 11⁄2" bore. Ideally suited for welding or solderinginto a stainless steel tank. A threaded stainless steelboss is included with the valve.

Chrome Plated Honey ValvesThe threaded chrome plated brass valves are in 11⁄2"and 2" bore; hole size 17⁄8" and 25⁄16" respectively.Complete with backnut, washer and face seal.

Straining and RipeningClean up your honey by straining it to removedebris. Use either individual strainers on a bucket ortank or the strainers that fit into honey tanks. Adouble strainer with a coarse and fine second meshis more efficient than a single strainer. A typicalsecond mesh will allow all pollen through andinevitably some specks. By leaving the honey tosettle in the tank for a day or so, not only do the airbubbles rise to the top but these specks settle out, leaving your honey ready for bottling and sale.Finer meshes are available, e.g. the toughmonafilament nylon micron strainers, but theslightest hint of granulation in the honey will blockthe mesh. Before using these, you may need towarm the honey. Two tips. If you are using a strainer on the tap of theextractor which is blocking, forget about straining atthis point. Concentrate on getting the honey intobuckets and strain it later, heating if necessary.Secondly, splash out if you can on stainless steelequipment.

11⁄2" bore with accurate cut off. Backnut included.Spare face and back seals are usually in stock as are thumb screws in either nylon, galvanised steel or stainless steel. We also carry stock of stainless steel hinge bolts forthis valve.

Creaming and Seeding Honey

Almost all British honeys will eventually set. Quiteoften a granulated honey is too hard, grainy onthe tongue and doesn’t look good. By controllingthe granulation, a creamed honey can beproduced which is not only soft and attractive butalso has a long shelf life.

How to do it

Liquify most of your honey by heating. Do notoverheat – 49°C is the maximum temperatureeven for hard oilseed rape honey.

Pour the liquid honey into a tank and let it coolslightly. Add some soft granulated honey, theamount is not critical – anything from 5-50% willdo. Using our honey creamer or one of theelectric mixing devices, stir well to disperse thecrystals evenly, then leave for a few hours. Repeatthis process several times over the next 24-48hours. When it appears opaque and thick, bottleimmediately. The honey will soft set quickly at15°C away from direct sunlight giving a premiumproduct with a long shelf life. Experiment withyour honeys to find the best combinations offlavour and colour.

Honey SpadeFor breaking up and transferringhoney in deep containers. All stainlesssteel construction, 2mm thick curvedblade with bevelled edge. Bladewelded to a 20mm diameter shaft with‘T’ head 55mm long. Overall length510mm.

UK Honey Labelling RegulationsBelow is our simple advice on honey labelling. For more detailed information – goto the website of the Food Standards Agency.1. The Word “HONEY” is required.2. The weight must be on the label – we will ensure it is the legal size and

format.3. You can specify the area where the honey is produced. For example,

Lincolnshire, Forest of Dean, Scottish Borders.4. You can specify the type of honey. For example, Heather, Borage. The honey

must be at least 75% of that particular type.5. If you are selling the honey, you must have your name and address on the

label. It does not need to be complete but you should be able to be foundfrom the information.

6. If you are selling the honey through a third party, you must have a lot number.7. You must have a best before date on the jar. We suggest 2-5 years from now.8. You must have a country of origin on the jar. For example – Produce of

England, Produce of Scotland, Harvested in Wales. Adding the country to theend of your address is not acceptable.

THORNE BEEHIVES – THE COMPLETE EQUIPMENT SUPPLY COMPANY

Making Beeswax Polish

Making traditional polish is a simple andprofitable way of using surplus wax. The basicrecipe for furniture polish is to mix equalquantities of beeswax and a good quality genuineturpentine, and heat in a water bath, not overdirect heat. When it is liquid, pour into containersand leave to set. For a smooth paste, increase theamount of turpentine. For a cream polish, addapprox. 10% pure soap flakes. Many recipes forpolish, cosmetics and other ways of usingbeeswax are given in our range of books.

Kochstar Wax Melter IIThis wax melter will liquefy and clean up to 15kgs ofwax on water using the sedimentation principle. Tap offliquid wax from theupper tap and drainwater from the lower.Makes wax melting forthe candle makera dream.Stainless steel tankwith plastic lid andhandles. Chrome platedbrass ball valves withpositive cut off. 1800Wheater controlled by athermostat with a rangebetween 30°C and 100°C.220-240V AC. 120 minute timer.365mm diameter, 480mm high.

Wax Melter InsertA stainless steel container suitable as a bain-marie chamber for the Kochstar I. Holds 12kgs of wax.

Kochstar Wax Melter IMade in Germany this versatile appliance is invaluableto beekeepers and candle makers alike.Heavy duty stainless steelboiler with plastic lid.Thermostaticallycontrolled 1800Wsealed heater socannot come intocontact with wax, honey or water.Calibrated to operatebetween 30°C and100°C with neonindicator light, 120minute timer. 365mmdiameter, 480mmhigh. Full instructionsfor wax melting supplied.

Carnauba WaxAdd approx. 10% by volume toyour mix to produce a qualityhardened polish. Carnauba is awax which has the highestmelting point of all the naturalwaxes. It is obtained from theleaves of a palm tree that is onlyfound commercially in N.E.Brazil.

TurpentineThis is pure gum of Portugueseorigin, the best available. Suitablefor making traditional or creamedpolish. 2.5 litre size. Collectiononly.

Easi-steam

This steam extractor is definitely a winner, especially asthe ‘messy’ bit can be outside in the open.

An electric steam generator (4 litre capacity, 1800W,cable length is 3m) is attached to a steel cover via asteam hose (3m in length). This cover fits snugly over abrood box (not supplied). The steel tray and grid areplaced on a solid floor (not supplied) and the woodeneke placed on top of the floor. Place a suitablereceptacle next to the outlet, e.g. old bucket feeder orice cream container, switch on the steam generatorand wait. After about 20 minutes wax and water willrun out of the front of the hive. Leave to settle andcool. The wax will float on top of the water producedby the condensed steam. Switch off generator andcarefully remove steel cover. In the hive you will findcompletely empty frames apart from some cocoon thathas lodged on the frame bottom bars and of coursethe wire from the foundation. The majority of thecocoon will be on the mesh base and can bediscarded. The frames are totally free of wax, all thatremains is the propolis. The Easi-steam has not onlyextracted the wax from the old comb (approx. 90% byour calculations) but it has also sterilised the framesand the brood box. Temperature reached in the broodbox using this method is approx. 105°C.

The beekeeper can use a different floor and brood boxevery time this process is used or have dedicatedequipment for the application. Steam generatoravailable separately.

All sizes available except W.B.C.

N.B. Plastic runners will distort if left in place.

Hot Wax PressThis little German press is another small and efficient way of extracting wax from old comb and cappings. Electrically heated with a 300W element. Cast aluminium pressure plate and base. Sheet aluminium basket. Mild steel thread and bar. When switched on the whole base of the press becomes hot (approx. 65°C) after about 15 minutes with a maximum of 85°C being reached after one hour.(Temperatures refer to an empty press and will varywhen the basket is loaded with cold, wet cappings forinstance). Comb/wax should be wrapped in linen scrimto separate solids from the wax. 400mm high, 370mmdiameter. Basket diameter 180mm, 240mm high.

Stainless Steel BucketFor the larger scale wax producer. This stainless steel pail is ideal for carrying large quantities of liquid wax safely. Holds approx. 9kgs of wax. Will not discolour wax like the galvanised equivalent. Solid stainless steel handle. 230mm high, 260mmdiameter.

Polish TinsTwo sizes. 100ml and 200mlThe 100ml size are of the twist-key pattern. To openthe 200ml size simply depress the lid on the sidewhere the rim alters to release the vacuum and the lidjust pops off. Not suitable for creamed polish.100ml: 94mm diameter, 26mm deep. Lid recess 77mmdiameter.200ml: 94mm diameter, 42mm deep. Lid recess 77mmdiameter.

Aluminium JarsAttractive squat containers with a 70mm wadded screw lid. 70mm diameter, 35mm deep. 100ml capacity. Suitable for cosmetics.

Aluminium PotsCan be used for cosmetics or polish. These stylishcontainers have proved very popular since theirintroduction. 2 sizes are available. 15ml, ideal for lipbalm, this has a raised, clip on lid and measures 42mmin diameter. The 70ml has a raised lid and a diameterof 64mm.

Apidea Mating Hive

Cupkit SystemThis clever and very successful system encompassesevery aspect of the queen rearing process, achievingthe benefits of grafting without the difficulties. One hundred brown cell cups are placed in the back ofthe comb box which has previously been fixed in abrood comb, and the queen is put in the front of thecage under a queen excluder. As she is in full lay, shecontinues to lay eggs in the artificial cups. She can bereleased manually the next day.

On the 4th day, very small, newly hatched larvae canbe seen through the transparent back and cups, eachin a pin-prick of royal jelly. Very easily, each cell cup islifted off with a cell cup cap which passes onto a cellbar fitted with cell bar blocks. When the queen cellsare sealed, hair roller cages can be slipped over, sothat emerging virgins are contained. These cages canthen be used for travelling and introduction. Each kit contains: 1 plastic comb box, 10 hair rollercages, 100 brown cell cups, 10 cell bar blocks, 10 cellcup caps and full instructions.

Jenter SystemSimilar to the Cupkit method. Each kit contains 1 combbox, 10 hair rolercages and plugs, 115 brown cell cups,115 cell cup holders, 1 cell transfer tool, 40 ribbed cellcarriers. Full instructions supplied.

IncubatorSerious queen breeders appreciate the convenience ofan incubator for keeping ripe cells, virgins andinseminated queens in controlled conditions. 35°C forpupae, 32°C for emerging queens. Fine temperaturecontrol, electric fan to circulate air and water reservoirto maintain high humidity ensure the correctenvironment. Queen cells should be caged and put inthe incubator on the 14th or 15th day, and each cageshould have a recess for a little honey or candy, andperhaps pollen. Virgins can be kept a few days beforebeing introduced ideally to a mating hive. Queens canbe kept for longer periods in larger cages withattendant workers. Takes approx. forty queen cells. Size330 x 230 x 255mm high.

These Polish hives are very compact, 300mm squareand 320mm high.

Separate, floor, brood with a division board and spacefor 3 frames on either side (included), syrup feederthat covers both halves of the hive and tight fittingroof. The floors are ventilated and versatile withremovable blocks, alighting boards and vents.Polystyrene is 35mm thick, superb insulation.

Mating HivesWe offer four types of mating hive, Apidea, Warnholz,Micro and Double Mini. Follow the instructions belowfor trouble-free queen rearing.Once queen cells have been raised, the virgins have tobe mated. This has traditionally been done by makingup a nucleus, with full size frames, for each queen, effectively taking a lot of bees out of honey production, just to support one queen. Modern plastics, and adifferent approach to creating a mini colony, havegiven us the mini-nuc, which uses only a cupful of beesat a time. Not only that, but each mini-nuc can lookafter a number of queens in succession. This is the technique: Assemble the mini-nuc with a strip of foundation

only, no comb, in each frame. Fill the feedercompartment with candy.

Shake young bees into a box and spray them withsugar syrup.

Drop one large cupful of sticky, wet bees into themini-nuc, and close up, making sure thatventilation is clear.

Leave for about an hour, until the bees roar inpanic, then run a virgin queen in.

Leave in a cool dark place for two or three days. Release the bees at the chosen site. Check in two weeks for signs of laying.

Nucleus HivesThe regular patternis supplied in B.S.,Langstroth, M.D., Commercial and 14" x 12" sizes. They will all accommodate five frames and have extra deep roofs suitable for a small contact feeder. Made in Western Red Cedar, each hive comprises: floor with entrance block, brood body, crownboard with feed hole and roof.

National TwinstockThe National Twinstock is designed to hold 12 full sizeB.S. brood self-spacing Hoffman frames (if you spaceyour frames on plastic or metal ends it will onlyaccommodate 10 frames). The floor is a standard typewith two diagonally opposite corner entrances. Thebrood is completely divided by a rigid, removableplastic division board, twin nucleus crownboards closeoff each half of the box. On top of this you can place adouble access, rapid feeder; once empty if one of theclear covers is removed bees from one of the nucs canaccess the whole feeder for any remnants of syrup. The whole hive is protected with a standard 4"National Roof. Half size travelling screens are alsoavailable. We recommend the hive is sited away from shade andwell off the ground at a convenient working height. The nuclei can be set up by placing in eachcompartment next to the division board two goodcombs of bees and emerging brood plus some storesof pollen and honey then one comb of bees and honeyand finally one frame of foundation. If the nuclei are toremain in the same apiary as they are made-up in,then two more good combs of bees should be shakeninto each nucleus, this will compensate for the flyingbees that return to their parent hive, if stores are shortyou can feed some syrup or Apifonda, a day later thenuclei can be given a queen cell that is due to emergein one to two days time or if you prefer a caged, mated queen.A close watch must be kept on nuclei to make surethat queens are laying and they have food and thatframes of foundation are given until they are full andready to transfer to larger hives, or if you wish to keepthe nuclei as queen mating hives, bees and brood mustbe taken away to reduce overcrowding and swarming. If you wish to unite the two nuclei, remove one queen, wait for about four hours then pull-out the divisionboard.A good degree of bee-keeping skill is required tomake-up and maintain nucleus hives, and mostimportant, to know all the diseases that affect honeybees. Nuclei can be treated for varroa infestationanytime as they are not yet honey producing colonies.Nucleus hives are very important in modern bee-keeping, to mate queens, to make up losses and toconstantly improve the bees we keep. The complete hive comprises floor, split brood boxwith plastic division board, two half size crownboards, two half size travelling screens, full size double accessrapid feeder, 4" roof. All parts are available separately.Assembled only. Frames not included.

Warnholz Mating Hive

Micro Mating HiveA small, compact, queen mating nuc. Only a small number of bees are required, they are stackable if you wish to have a bank of nucs. 170x125x120mm. Supplied with two frames and embossed starter strip.Removable floor ventilator means a virgin can beintroduced from underneath. Adjustable disc entrance.

Fume Pads and Fume BoardSee page 16.

Fumidil BThis is now widely accepted as the only proveneffective treatment for the control of Nosema. In 25g.or 475g. bottles, enough for three or fifty-four coloniesrespectively. Fumidil B is effective when fed in syrup inthe autumn. It can also be used in spring as apreliminary measure to the transfer of bees onto cleancombs. Each colony to be treated should receive approx. 166mg. of active ingredient (1⁄3 of a 25g. phial) administered in a syrup containing 14lbs. sugar in seven pints of water.

Sulphur Strips and BurnerSulpher dioxide is one of the most effective methods of controlling wax moth. It is highly volatile, not fat soluble and poses very little risk to bees, wax and honey. When ignited the strips give off noxious sulphur dioxide, this heavier than air gas then sinks through the pile of supers and frames being treated. The galvanised steel burner measures 195mm long with a diameter of 95mm. A hook in the lid is used to suspend the sulphur strip centrally in the burner. NB. DO NOTINHALE GAS FUMES. How to use: Once you have your sealed stack ofsupers ready for treatment place an empty brood bodyon the top with a sulphur burner inside. Insert 2 stripsand light, closing the top with a roof. Stack supers 6high (1 strip is enough for 3 supers). Repeat treatmentevery 4 weeks. Also prevents pollen going mouldy.

EFB Test KitEuropean Foulbrood(EFB) is a bacterial brooddisease caused byseveral agents the mainbeing the bacteriumMelissococcus pluton. Itoccurs most frequentlyin the spring or earlysummer during broodrearing and is thought to be caused by stress in thecolony and lack of pollen. Symptoms can be variablewhich makes EFB difficult to identify with certainty;frequently disappearing once there is a nectar flow. ButEFB can seriously effect brood development and needsto be identified in a colony as soon as possible. It isvitally important to detect EFB as early as possible inorder to prevent its further spread to healthy colonies.Vita’s quick and effective Diagnostic Kit, developed withCentral Science Laboratory Pocket Diagnostics enablesevery beekeeper to test their hives at the first suspicionof the presence of EFB. The Diagnostic Kit takes just 3minutes to give a result and has been validated with98%+ accuracy. For single use only.

AFB Test KitAmerican Foulbrood (AFB)is an infectious brooddisease caused by thespore-forming bacteriumPaenibacillus larvae varlarvae. It is the mostdestructive andwidespread of thehoneybee brood diseases.AFB disseminates rapidly through the colony and, if leftunchecked, spreads quickly to other healthy coloniesboth in the same apiary and those nearby. It is vitallyimportant to detect AFB as early as possible in order toprevent its further spread to healthy colonies. Vita’squick and effective Diagnostic Kit, developed withCentral Science Laboratory Pocket Diagnostics, enablesevery beekeeper to test their hives at the first suspicionof the presence of AFB. The Diagnostic Kit takes just 3minutes to give a result and has been validated with98%+ accuracy. For single use only.

CertanIn 120ml. plastic bottles, enough for 120 frames. It is the only biological larvaecide available for the control of wax moths. It will not harm you, your bees, your wax or honey.

Acetic Acid 80%Place a closed hive floor on earth/grass/wooden board – not concrete. Put 2 or 3 of our absorbent fume pads saturated with 1⁄4 pint of acetic acid onto the floor. Place a brood box full of frames on top. Put another soaked pad onto the top bars of the box before placing a further brood box on top. Repeat this for as many boxes as need to befumigated. Seal the top with a roof. Fumigation shouldtake approx. one week. Acetic acid used in this way is very effective in treatingnosema and all stages of wax moth. It will however benecessary to repeat the process every 2 or 3 weeks.Note: Acetic acid is highly corrosive. It will remove skinvery quickly. Always wear overalls, rubber gloves and asuitable mask. 2.5litres. Collection only.

Trickling NotesIf practising the trickling method of control by usingoxalic acid in a sugar syrup please be aware of theinherent dangers to your bees.A sugar syrup/acid solution requires special lowtemperature storage conditions. At this level the HMF(Hydroxymethylfurfural) content in the solution ismaintained at 22mg/kg.HMF levels increase with temperature and syrup/acidsolutions stored, even at room temperature, willcontain high levels of HMF (approx. 1200mg/kg after30 weeks). At this level live bees will not be harmedbut any syrup stored for later feeding to larvae will behighly toxic and could kill them.It is therefore advisable to always prepare a freshmixture before treatment.

Acid Safety KitOrganic Acids are dangerous: it is therefore essentialthat the correct safety measures are taken whenhandling them. This kit comprises 1 pair of industrial rubber gloves,1 pair of safety goggles and 1 moulded face mask(FFP3 S/L rated).

Sugar Dusting Grid

A simple 460mm square of nylon mesh trapped in asoftwood frame.Visit www.scientificbeekeeping.com for full details oflikely results and technique. Icing sugar dusting of bees to control varroa is notnew. Using a hive size grid however is a recentdevelopment which makes this system very attractive, especially as it works with outstanding results. Simply insert a collection tray/board on to, or under, your floor (whether solid or open mesh. Remove hiveparts to the brood body. Smoke bees and add thedusting grid. Scoop up 100g approx. of dry icing sugar scatter overmesh and brush all over with our adapted bee brush.Remove grid and gently dust sugar on the top bars intothe seams of bees. Within minutes mites will be dropping onto the floor ofyour hive for disposal. If you operate a double brood, use twice as muchsugar. The sugar will drop very quickly through twobrood boxes. The advantages of this system are obvious. It is prettyquick, it can be done at any time of year, there is nowithdrawal period and it is perfectly safe for you andyour bees.

Sugar Dusting Measure and BrushUse to measure out100g of icing sugarfor use with abovegrid.

Sugar Dusting Bellows

The use of icing sugar is becoming more and moreaccepted worldwide. We are now therefore offeringthis 1kg capacity air bellow operated duster.Simply fill the chamber with dry icing sugar, insert tubeinto hive through the floor and pump vigorously.Moving the bellows quickly from left to right and frontto back. Continue this action for approximately 20seconds. NB a card or sticky floor insert is a good ideaas the varroa drop can be immediate.

Lactic Acid 15% SolutionLactic Acid is a compound foundnaturally in milk, molasses, variousfruits and honey.Normal varroa mite kill for theproduct in broodless hives isconsidered to be about 80%.However if it is applied to colonieswith brood the effectiveness drops to20-40%. As a result Lactic Acid isnormally used as a mite controlduring late autumn and winter.Application is achieved by using atrigger spray. 4-6 pumping strokes willbe required to administer the dose of5-6ml per single side of a frame.

AmbrosiaAmbrosia bee feed syrup is a liquid prepared foodwhich comes very close to natural bee nutrition. Itconsists of fructose, glucose and sucrose. Because of itsvery high concentration it is not susceptible tomicrobiological degradation. Its very high fructosecontent (40% on dry weight) prevents crystallisation.Ambrosia bee food syrup is a balanced liquid preparedfood with a low HMF content. The pH value is adjustedto suit bees and contributes to the creation of healthyand strong Spring colonies. Available in 17.5 litre(25kg) jerry cans or we can dispense into your owncontainers.

Feeding Your Bees

Autumn:

Feed Ambrosia or concentrated syrup: 2 partswhite sugar to 1 part hot water, then leave to cool,OR Ambrosia Fondant, in August/September, sothat the brood nest, which is now emptying, fillswith stores for winter. If Nosema is suspected ordiagnosed, add Fumidil B to the syrup. Feed 2 or 3gallons, or until the bees stop taking the fooddown.

Winter:

If there is doubt about the quantity of storesavailable in the winter, do NOT feed syrup whichwill distress the bees in the long periods of badweather but put Apifonda directly on the top barsof the brood frames.

Spring:

A vulnerable time in the beekeeping calendar asthe increase in brood rearing can rapidly rundown stores. Give small amounts of a weaker(1:1) syrup. The extra water aids the developmentof the brood nest.

Pollen Substitute:

The bees which have survived the winter have toproduce 2 or 3 generations of brood to get thecolony off to a good start. In a poor spring lack ofpollen can hold up development. Nektapollprovides the nourishment necessary for those oldbees to raise brood.

Ambrosia FondantA ready-to-use fondant paste consisting of refinedsugar, fructose and glucose. Perfect for spring feeding. Available in 2.5kg. bags or multiples of 12.5kgs.

Treatment is recommended oncea week for three weeks in bothspring and autumn. Api Herb comes in a single dose sachet which is diluted in 500ml of sugar solution. This is sufficient for a single treatment of 10 hives. Drip 5 ccsof the solution on each frame, dispose of remainingsolution within 48 hours.

Honey-B-HealthyA Feeding stimulant withessential oils. Can be used inearly spring, autumn orwhenever there is a shortageof pollen. Used widely in theUSA in trigger sprays as analternative to smoke forcalming bees or when unitingcolonies. Each 475ml (approx.)container will make up to 23gallons of solution. In a 1:1 syrup mix add just 5cc. If used in a triggerspray use 20cc per litre.

SuperboostA revolutionary new product for improving bee healthand vigour as well as crop pollination. SuperBoost is a pheromone device that is easily hungbetween brood frames. One device works for over 30days. Tests have shown huge increases in: pollen loads, colony growth rate, young worker bees, egg layingrate, honey production and it inhibits swarming!

Bee AttractA 5g mix of wildflowerseeds that encouragesbees into your garden.Varieties include Bird’sFoot Trefoil, CommonKnapweed, GreaterKnapweed, Red Clover,Cornflower, Selfheal andSainfoin.

Wasp BaneKeep wasps under control with this highly efficient trap. A two part device. When the lower chamber is full of wasps, (and it will be if our experience is anything to go by!) simply replace. Retain the upper chamber. Great for reducing robbing in the apiary.

Venom ExtractorA vacuum principle, venom extraction kit neatlypackaged for travelling abroad. Full instructionssupplied.

Candlemaking

Candlemaking is one of the most popular, educational and therapeutic of hobbies. Beautiful shapes can be formed in a variety of ways. You will find all theequipment needed to make moulded, dipped and rolled beeswax candles in this catalogue.Beeswax is a ‘green’ wax from a renewable source and totally environmentally friendly. It burns evenly with a lovely aroma. It is pleasant to touch and easyto work. It is the king of the waxes and, as such, is highly sought after by cosmetic and polish producers as well as candlemakers.

Rolled CandlesThe easiest and safest way to make beeswax candles.Suitable for all ages. No molten wax used. Uses onlybeeswax sheets and the appropriate wick.

Instructions:1. Decide on the

finished diameterof your candle(One 16" x 8"sheet, when rolledlengthways, has adiameter of justover 1").

2. Use the size ofsquare braidedwick one sizesmaller than thediameter of yourfinished candle.

3. Cut the wick 1/2"longer than thesheet and place it1/4" in from oneedge.

4. Carefully turn upthe edge of the waxand fold over thewick.

5. Begin rolling, ensuring the endsof the candle aresquare. If you rollout of square, simply unroll andstart again.

6. The final edge of the sheet can be secured bywarming the wax gently near a radiator andpressing carefully with the fingertips. Alternatively,a few small spots of wax glue can be used alongthe length of the edge.

Tips and Ideas: The sheets should be kept at room temperature

for at least 24 hours before use to ensure the waxis supple.

Work in a warm room. Alternatively, hold thesheet close to a hairdryer or radiator for a fewseconds.

To make tapered candles, cut the sheet slightly atan angle.

To finish the top of the candle, a pleasing effectcan be achieved by dipping the tip in moltenbeeswax.

To make candles with a larger diameter, add extrasheets into the rolling process.
