    Research and rankings

Water scienceGriffith is taking a global scientific approach to finding a solution tothe worlds water problems, including drought, water quality andclimate change. Griffiths Australian Rivers Institute plays a leadingrole in managing water resources with a focus on freshwater, estuarine and urban water. Institute staff have developed a set ofecosystem health assessment tools for measuring conservationefforts adopted in producing South East Queenslands annual HealthyWaterways Report Card, and have revolutionised work in wastewatertesting and identified the key factors that cause poor quality indrinking water. Researchers in this field also collaborate widelythrough the Tropical Rivers and Coastal Knowledge Hub, the UrbanWater Security Research Alliance and the Queensland Smart WaterResearch Facility.

Drug discovery and infectious diseasesGriffith University is a leader in drug discovery in Australia with astrong focus on infectious diseases and a cross-disciplinary approachto disease prevention and cure. Griffiths Institute for Glycomicsleads international research in carbohydrates-based drug discovery. The Eskitis Institute researchers search for new drug and cell-baseddrug therapies and are supported by the Institutes hosting of theQueensland Compound Library and the Nature Bank, a uniquecollection of samples derived from plants and marine invertebrates. The Eskitis Institute is also home to the National Centre for AdultStem Cell Research. Genomics researchers in the Griffith HealthInstitute are also involved in this field through their research in genevariants associated with migraine, breast cancer and skin cancer.

Asian politics, security and developmentResearchers in this area are hosted by the Griffith Asia Institute andCentre for Governance and Public Policy, and include staff from theSchool of Government and International Relations and School ofInternational Business and Asian Studies. Their research addressesthe politics of Asia, with particular reference to rising powers, newmodes of regional governance, and emerging security challengesand responses. Griffith Climate Change Response ProgramThe Griffith Climate Change Response Program - established in2006 to focus on the information needed to help governments, businesses and communities adapt to the physical impacts of climatechange - coordinates research into climate change adaptation andmitigation through a multidisciplinary approach. Researchers workacross a broad range of thematic areas: climate change adaption incoastal communities; adapting Australias towns and cities to climatechange; public health impacts of a changing climate; land systemsand climate change; understanding human and social responses; andclimate change governance. From 2008-2013 Griffith has beenhost to the National Climate Change Adaptation Research Facility,an Australian Government initiative to harness and coordinate thecapabilities of Australias researchers in this field.

EducationGriffith University is committed to producing internationally relevantresearch across the broad fields of inquiry of education, literacy, learning and related areas, with a focus on leading, learning andchange across the lifespan, within and outside schooling. Griffithsstrength in these fields rests on the depth of research expertise, hosted in the Griffith Institute for Educational Research and theSchool of Education and Professional Studies. Researchers areencouraged to undertake cross-disciplinary and cross-sectoralprojects with industry that define research in education beyond

traditional expectations. Past research into professional learning, language and literacy education, mathematics education, curriculumand assessment, and leadership in schools and communities has hada particularly strong impact on low socioeconomic and Aboriginalschools and communities.

Environmental sciencesEnvironmental Science research at Griffith is managed primarilythrough the Environmental Futures Centre, whose researchers engagein multidisciplinary research to aid the understanding of criticalenvironmental issues and develop solutions that will facilitate clean, resilient and sustainable futures for Australian and global environments. The Centres multidisciplinary nature results from the synergies ofthe Griffith School of Environment and School of Biomolecular andPhysical Sciences. Researchers are engaged in a comprehensiverange of fields with a common focus on excellence in fundamental

science, environmental sustainability and the effective developmentof evidence based solutions to significant environmental challenges.Research is organised into four priority areas: clean environment andenergy; resilient biodiversity and ecosystems; sustainable landscapemanagement; and Australias past and future.

The Centre is home to a multidisciplinaryresearch team and aims to transform health and community servicesthrough the development of collaborative, innovative and sustainablemodels of care and frameworks for practice among service providers

and individuals, families and communities. The Centre also hoststhe first National Health and Medical Research Council Centre ofResearch Excellence in Nursing Interventions for Hospitalised Patients(NCREN) which aims to enable greater collaboration internationallythrough training, research and knowledge transfer.

Physical sciencesThe Physical Sciences area combines the research excellence ofGriffiths Centre for Quantum Dynamics and the Queensland Micro-and Nanotechnology Centre. The Centre for Quantum Dynamicsconducts world-leading research in ultrafast quantum processes, quantum information, and quantum foundations, and hosts theQueensland nodes of two Australian Research Council Centres ofExcellence, the Centre for Quantum Computation and CommunicationTechnology and the Centre for Coherent X-Ray Science. GriffithsQueensland Micro- and Nanotechnology Centre focuses on problems

that are integral to the development of clean and intelligent systemsand has particular strengths in sustainable energy technologies, novel devices and materials, theory and modelling. It also hosts theQueensland Microtechnology Facility where unique silicon-carbide onsilicon substrates have been developed.

Criminology and crime preventionResearchers in this field consider contemporary global challenges tosociety and community wellbeing with a focus on early interventionand prevention in areas of social disadvantage. Reflecting themultidisciplinary nature of this area, seven research centres atGriffith, hosting more than 200 researchers from across theUniversity, are engaged in this field: Australian Research CouncilCentre of Excellence in Policing and Security; Key Centre for Ethics,Law, Justice and Governance; Socio-Legal Research Centre; GriffithCentre for Cultural Research; Urban Research Program; Griffith
