Speaking ahead of a meeting last night, Anglesea Street-based Garda Brendan Murphy was one of more than 300 members of the public service who gathered at City Hall to oppose the Croke Park II proposals agreed at the Labour Relations Court two weeks ago. The gathering last night included members of the Psychiatric Nurses Association, the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation, the Irish Medical Organisation, the Garda Repres- entative Association, Unite and the Civil and Public Services Union. Unions will vote next month on whether or not to accept the propos- als, which will impose cuts to overtime and premium payments, as well as increase hours for public sector workers. Garda Murphy, who has been in the force for more than 30 years, said: “My gross wages are down about €15,000 a year since 2007, to around €50,000. All my spare money is now gone. I had to go the credit union for a loan a few weeks ago when the dishwasher broke.” President of the Garda Representative Asso- ciation John Parker said: “These workers get stabbed. Our garda members get shot at, maimed and killed while on duty. “Morale has never been lower. Rock bottom would not even describe it. Public order and assaults on members is rife. What keeps them going is the pay, which keeps a roof over their heads. We have to vote with our feet.” Earlier yesterday, Siptu’s Jack O’Connor said that union’s executive would be cam- paigning for a yes vote to Croke Park II. Siptu has 63,000 members. But Michael O’Sullivan of Impact described his words as “weasel words” describing the agreement as anti-family and anti-women. Mike Murphy of the Irish Federation of Uni- versity Teachers and the Socialist Party said the closure of businesses like HMV, Fitzgerald Electrical and others in Cork highlighted the effects of austerity. He said the proposals would have further detrimental effect on the economy. ● See pages two and three for more. Garda Brendan Murphy: All my spare money is now gone.
