Teachers were infuriated by the Trinity College scientist, Aoife McLysaght who accused them of lacking enthusiasm for the subject matter they teach. Other guests were enraged by Tom O’Sullivan of the INTO, after he stated that Ministers and TDs receiving non-contributory pensions while serving in the Dail is acceptable, on the basis that they could lose their seat at any time. The event was organised by the Northside Learning Hub whose manager Jennifer Moroney-Ward was a panellist in the second session of the evening. Proceedings began with an inspirational performance from Limerick’s Junior Jazz ensemble whose 12-year-old prodigy Andreas Varady has secured a scholarship to study Jazz at the Skidmore Jazz Institute in New York. The panel for the first debate which followed the group included UL economist and lecturer Dr Stephen Kinsella, Castletroy’s award-winning blogger Tommy Collison and trade unionists Tom O’Sullivan, Assistant General Secretary of the INTO and Tony McKernan of the ASTI. Dr Kinsella claimed that the Leaving Certificate is essentially a competition in learning lists of information and does not serve any practical purpose for applying skills to the working world. He suggested that the system be amended to a new cirriculum which is project or goal based and described the Young Scientist of the Year Award as an excellent example of this. Someone who is no stranger to the Young Scientist of the Year is Tommy Collison who spoke about his own experience of participating in the Young Scientist competition and echoed his fellow panellist’s call for more practical work. One audience member questioned the interest in a skills-based approach claiming that thousands of young men on the live register had chosen the skills path in construction and now require retraining. Another audience member suggested it was easy for the speakers to encourage entrepreneurship from behind their desks when they had not experienced the harsh realities of the present trading climate. Tommy Collison accepted that there is a harsh economic climate at present but emphasised the need to foster a culture of entrepreneurship similar to that seen in Silicon Valley. Stephen Kinsella said that the BizCamp project which is run in the University of Limerick encourages new enterprise and that people seeking advice need to engage with experts within Universities. Other contributors from the audience spoke about the inequalities of the Irish education and he inter- generational problem of people from socially disadvantaged areas being allowed to fall through the cracks. Although serious debate was flowing for the evening there was a constant vein of humour from the audience, panellists and the host. The audience were also treated from even lighter entertainment from the Camembert Quartet front-man Paddy Cullivan (Clint Velour) who played a series of satirical current affairs based musical pieces. Afterwards David McWilliams declared Limerick’s first Leviathan event a success and Jennifer Moroney Ward hopes that they will return again in the near future. EXPERTS questioned existing education structures and turned Dolans Warehouse into a political hotbed as the audience battled to have their voice heard at Limerick’s first Leviathan event; ‘Can Education Save Ireland?’

It was an arm-aching evening for many as they battled to air their thoughts at the panellists and the evening’s host, journalist and author David McWilliams.

The panel for the first debate which followed the group included UL economist and lecturer Dr Stephen Kinsella,

Castletroy’s award-winning blogger Tommy Collison and trade unionists Tom O’Sullivan, Assistant General Secretary of the INTO and Tony McKernan of the ASTI.
