It is easy to get a big headwhen you lead your team instats through the season butwhen it comes to PointBeach junior Reagan Gould,it might be impossible tofind a player more humble.Gould scored four goals

in Beach’s win overManville in the first roundof states and it’s not the firsttime she’s hit four in a soc-cer game. She has beenplaying since she was fivebut was quick to attributeher success to everybodyelse.“I’ve been really lucky

that I’ve had some reallygreat, resourceful coaches

over the last couple yearsthat I’ve been super blessedwith to help me out,” shesaid. She loves being a part of

the Garnet Gulls team andespecially enjoys her team-mates.“It’s just something that I

absolutely love and it’s theone thing I’m actually goodat,” she said humbly withthe same smile that crossesher face after she scores agoal. “I enjoy it and I enjoybeing out here with the girlseveryday. They’re great andthe younger girls reallystepped up this year too soit’s fun. I love it.”

For Beach Gould playsforward and her knowledgeof the game is evident.“I drive with the ball,

which is important becausesometimes the pass just is-n’t going to work but I dothink the passes and theswitching of the field is im-portant,” she explained.“Speed is obviously impor-tant too and the goal scor-ing helps just a little bit.”Outside of the school

team Gould trains threetimes a week with PlayersDevelopment Academy outof Toms River. On her own she does

strength training and lots ofleg workouts to keep strongand prevent injury.Moving forward with her

high school career Gouldhopes her and her team-mates could achieve a statetitle.“Obviously we’ve suf-

fered a crazy amount of in-juries to key players andwe’ve done a pretty good

job of not having them butthe goal remains the sameand that is to win a state ti-tle,” she said. “This is a teamsport so I’m lucky to haveall of these girls around meto help me be successfuland the team be successfulto help accomplish that thisyear or next year.”For herself, Gould hopes

to play soccer at the colle-giate level at a school with aprominent soccer team aswell as strong academics.“Sometimes I tell myself

maybe I don’t want to do itbut then I come to gamesand watch and think oh myGod I want to be out thereright now. I could never seemyself not playing the sportever,” she explained.Gould looks up to past

Beach captain Morgan LaD-uca and the women’s Na-tional Team as role models.Look for her to make a

big impact as the Gulls con-tinue on with the state tour-nament.

POINT BEACH VOLLEYBALL NOTEBOOK

Garnet Gulls fight but fall to Donovan Catholic at home

BY DOMINICK POLLIOTHE OCEAN STAR

POINT BEACH— It had been along week of no games andonly practice for the GarnetGulls volleyball team beforethey hosted the DonovanCatholic Griffins last Thurs-day. The low-key week tookits toll as Point Beach wasbeat in two sets, 25-15 and 25-23.“That was our first set of

competitive volleyball in aweek since we playedPinelands,” said head coachAndrew Hanniffy after theGulls’ slow start. “We hadfour practices in a row andour focus was starting to drifta little bit. It took the first 15points or so to really engage.”The first set began with a

long volley but Beach onlyset up a hit once on threesides. Donovan Catholic hadthem on their heels playingdefense, which eventually led

to their first point on ashanked Beach dig.The Griffins then jumped

out to a 13-4 lead before PointBeach took a much-neededtimeout.Out of the timeout Beach

seemed a bit more relaxedand patient but could notovercome the deficit to dropthe first set 25-15.The Gulls had trouble fig-

uring out lefty Ireland Beal, who dropped in a mix of tips, shots down the line, cross-court and cuts.“I told them she’s from out-

side and hits a hard cross sodon’t follow it out to herarm,” explained Hanniffy.“You just see so few leftieshitting outside it’s tough andhard to prepare for.”In the second set they were

able to deal with Beal andstarted off neck-and-neckwith their opponent 6-6.Donovan Catholic piled onfour points before Beach gota sideout on a Griffin ballinto the net.The Gulls played hard and

managed to tie the game at 11,

prompting a DonovanCatholic timeout.Point Beach then jumped

out to their largest lead of thegame, 18-14, before theGriffins righted their shipand went on a 7-1 run to takea two-point lead. Then it was Beach’s Tara

Clark with a tip in the middleto cut the deficit, 21-20. Dono-van Catholic then took a 22-20 lead before a long serveand a Clark ace tied the gameup. Unfortunately her nextserve went long to put theGriffins back ahead. The two teams exchanged

outside kills and DonovanCatholic sat at set and matchpoint 24-23.Beach had the serve but af-

ter the Griffins returned itthey were not able to set up akill. Donovan Catholic uti-lized the free ball and with atip over Beach’s middle blockthey won the game. The Garnet Gulls had trou-

ble honing in on DonovanCatholic’s array of serves.“I’ve been serving a mix of

serves at the girls – top spin, floats, a little side spin – try-

ing to pick the spots,” statedHanniffy. “But I think by nowthey’ve learned the way Iserve so seeing fresh serversit can take you a point or twoto figure out how this girl isgoing to serve the ball.”This led to not so favorable

passes for Beach, which ledto difficult balls for ErinneRegan to get to and set.“Our passing could have

been better,” continued Han-niffy. “Our defense in the firstset, we kept the ball alivequite a bit we were just miss-ing a few early kills that wepicked up in the middle andend of the set.”For video highlights of

Point Beach’s loss to Dono-van Catholic check out theOcean Star Sports Show onyoutube.com.In the end, the loss is

something Hanniffy hopedhis team learned from as theyopened up play in the statetournament where they facedmuch tougher opponents.“Donovan Catholic is one

of the stronger teams – theywere in the Shore ConferenceTournament. They give us

tough serves,” said Hanniffy.“That’s what I expect to seeWednesday: tough servingand the other team not givingaway cheap points. I expectthem to be pretty polishedand we’re gong to have toearn our kills.”On Wednesday Point

Beach, seeded at 27th, tookon the fifth-seeded Kinnelonon the road. They gave the higher seed

a run for the money but even-tually fell in two sets, 25-17and 29-27.In the second set the Gulls

jumped out to an 11-2 lead butKinnelon reeled them back inand the two teams were tiedat 20. They were tied again at23 and Beach earned a coupleset points but could not con-vert that final point to bringthe match into the third set.

Regan finished the gamewith 16 assists, a dig and anace. White racked up 14 kills, six digs, three aces and an as-sist. Defensively Alexa Fantscooped up nine digs anddished out two assists.Prior to Wednesday’s game

the team played one last reg-ular season match againstFreehold Boro where theylost in two sets. The Gulls dropped the first

set 25-7 before putting up afight in the second. Theywound up on the losing sideof a 25-22 set.

It was a tough weekend forstriped bass fishermen as fish-ing was slow this past week-end. Saturday was a beautifulday, but it started a littlebumpy in the morning with anorth wind and a 3-4 foot seathat was left over from aFriday late night blow. Thewind dropped out by 11:00 amand seas then flattened outquickly. Most boaters headednorth and fished from Asburyup to the Red Church justbefore Long Branch, as this iswhere the bite was the previ-ous three days before.Unfortunately the striped

bass had lock jaw if they wereeven there at all. Some boaters

scored a fish or two but mostboaters had nothing. The bitehas not been a jig bite either,as it has been trolling all

bunker spoons. Most boaterstroll Tony Maja spoons the #4adult bunker spoon in whiteor chartreuse at 3-4 knots. These spoons can be trolledwith wire line or with braidwhen using weighted 6-10 ozdrails. To read how it’s donecheck out the Maja site athttp://tonymajaproducts.com.All the information you needto know is there.Sunday was a different

story, as small craft warningswere posted with a 15-20 milesouthwest wind. This keptmost boaters at the dock forthe day. With bad reports onSaturday, heading out in theseconditions is not very attrac-

tive when the mindset is thatyou are not going to catch fish.Ocean temperatures are 62degrees, so that is still on thewarmer side for the bass to beschooling up. Word is thatthere has been a very goodbite of big bass up off of theRockaways in the last week.Sea bass fishing has

remained very good on thereefs and wrecks with limitcatches being made forboaters when seas allow youto get out. There are also din-ner plate size porgies on thesame pieces along with somecod. As I mentioned last week, sea bass are bottom feeders, soareas such as artificial reefs, rock piles, and wrecks willattract this species. They canbe found in waters from 60-120 feet in our area. One of thebest baits to catch them is tocut a fresh squid into one inchrings and place on a two hookbait holder rig system with theweight at the bottom of the rig.Drop it down to the bottomand if the sea bass are plentifulon the piece that you are fish-ing they will bite right away.Sea bass can also be jigged

on these shallow wrecks usingdiamond jigs, Stingo’s, orShimano jigs. Just make sureyour jigs are heavy enough tostay near the bottom wherethe sea bass are holding. Ifthere is a strong current pres-ent they will be swept away. The Sandy Hook, Shark River,Sea Girt, and Axel Carlsonreefs are all good sea bassspots to anchor up at. Dailylimits are 15 fish at 12.5 inchesfrom now through December31st.The next meeting of the

Manasquan Fishing Club willbe this Friday night November5th at the ManasquanWomen’s Club, 62 Main St.Manasquan, starting at 7:30pm. The Club has announcedthat the guest speaker will be

member Al Wynne, who willbe presenting a seminar onblackfishing. Al is a legendwhen it comes to catchingthese tricky tasty fish and he iswilling to share his secrets andmethods. This is a must meet-ing for those wanting toincrease their success or forthe beginners looking for anedge.Bob over at Fishermen’s

Den in Belmar reports, “Wellwe are nearly complete at thenew shop, small things stillworking on but looks good.We weighed in our first bigbass at the new location a 52+lb monster taken on the CelticStorm out of the Belmar mari-na. The boat fishing has beenvery good when weatherallows, trolling bunker spoonsand drop and snag are takingmany large bass. We are alsoseeing an increase of surfcaught bass along Monmouthand Ocean county coast line.Plugging after dark seems toproduce the best. Flounderstill dominates the Shark Riverfishing with most gettingthere limits with little effort.Giant blues are feeding off-shore and our party boats aretaking advantage of this.Anglers are bringing 17 and 18lb fish to our scale on a dailybasis. Hope all is well with youand big fish are on your line.”Chuck Furimsky, of the

Gulls avoid offside trap, move on to next roundBY DOMINICK POLLIOTHE OCEAN STAR

POINT BEACH— There are al-ways advantages and disad-vantages when it comes tobeing seeded for a tourna-ment. For lower seeds itmeans facing the toughestopponent out of the gate, which is a daunting task. Themiddle seeds though usuallycontain the teams that havethe potential to go all the waywhile being underestimatedby the better teams in thebracket. The Point Beach boys soc-

cer team hopes to do just thatas they opened up play in theCentral Jersey [CJ] Group Itournament on Tuesdayagainst South Amboy. The Gulls were handed the

eighth-seed and South Am-boy was seeded ninth. In ad-dition to their seed, PointBeach had home field advan-tage and took care of busi-ness with a 6-0 victory.Jack McDonald opened up

scoring early for Point Beachwith a cross into the box nearthe goalie. As South Amboy’sgoalie jumped to chorale theball it went right through thebreadbasket, off his chest andinto the goal.During their search for the

second goal of the game,Beach was continually foiledby South Amboy’s offsidetrap.“No one ever plays the off-

side trap on us,” said headcoach Mike Baiata. “It justtook some patience. Theyhad to get used to it, figure itout and then we got in there.”Anthony Decraene scored

the next goal on a beautifulpass from Ki Costa to theright wing. Shortly after Dan-ny Savage got on the end of across from Mike Ciorlian and

after a settle he put it past thegoalie for a 3-0 Beach lead. The Gulls were caught off-

sides a few more times beforeAlex Atno stole a South Am-boy pass, turned up field andsent a ball to a streaking Cos-ta.Costa received the pass,

was not offsides and had aone-on-one look against thegoalie. He shot right andSouth Amboy’s goalie couldnot react to make the save.Point Beach went into half-

time up 4-0.About 10 minutes out of

the half the Gulls notched an-other goal. Off a throw in, JoeDelGrippo dropped a backheel pass to Christian Manesswho was coming in fast onthe box from the left wing.Maness handled the ball him-self towards goal and rippeda shot near post that flew inpast a frozen South Amboygoaltender.Soon after, DelGrippo put

his foot on a ball to scoreBeach’s sixth and final goal ofthe match.Point Beach did not go into

the game with too muchknowledge of their oppo-nents but according to Baiata, they had preferred it thatway.“I didn’t know much about

them this year but we kind ofjust went in not wanting toknow too much. We wereworried about the things wecould control and we didthat,” he explained. “We wor-ried about our touches, ourshots, getting the ball in andgetting some dangerous op-portunities and putting themaway.”The Garnet Gulls did just

that and finished with a totalof 24 shots. Ryan Franzoni re-mained resolute in goal formost of the game before Eric

Monticello was put in toclose out the win. Franzonirecorded four saves andMonticello snagged three.Today the Point Beach

squad travels to take on top-seeded Shore Regional, ateam they lost to twice in theregular season. The game isset to begin at 2 p.m.“We know a lot about

Shore but third times acharm,” said Baiata with asmile. “Those games wereclose. The first game wasvery close. The second onefor the first 50-60 minuteswas fairly close so we knowwe can hang with them attimes.”Point Beach lost the first

game 3-2 and the secondgame 5-2 in which Shore’s JTKessler scored all five goals.Shore Regional has an ar-

ray of dangerous players thatBaiata and his team will besure to tend to during thegame.“We’ll just go out and give

them hell,” he said. “We’vegot nothing left to lose in thatgame I guess.”

Boro Panthers declaw Jaguars in opening round win

BY DOMINICK POLLIOTHE OCEAN STAR

POINT BORO — Soccer gamesunder the lights in front ofrowdy home crowds are al-ways fun. Add the intensity ofa state tournament and youhave exciting soccer. On Tuesday night the Point

Boro boys soccer team went

up against the Medford TechJaguars in the first round ofthe South Jersey [SJ] Group IItournament. The Panthers proved

they’re better than their fellowwildcats, shutting out theJaguars 7-0.“We felt coming into the

game that we were the betterteam and that better teamdoesn’t always win. We want-ed to come out with energy,”explained head coach PeteCasalino. “We did, we cameout quick and when we playwith the right pace there’s not

a lot of teams that can standup to that type of pressure fortoo long. Eventually the ballgoes into the net and we werefortunate enough to finishtonight.”Nine minutes in was Boro’s

first finish when senior cap-tain Sam Monaco headed in acorner kick from Mason Pitts. Then it was Monaco with

the through ball in the 17thminute to Pitts in the middlewho put the ball in the back ofthe net with a quick left-foot-ed shot for a two-goal Borolead.

In the 26th minute Monacodished out another assist. Hecrossed the ball into the boxand Nick DeCurtis notchedhis first of two goals in thegame. The fourth Boro goal most

likely went in the books as aMedford Tech own goal, al-though it was the direct resultof Monaco. He crossed theball out in front of goal and italmost went through un-touched but it hit off the kneeof a Medford Tech defenderand bounced into the goal. The Panthers went into the

half with a 4-0 lead and com-ing out of the half it was obvi-ous they were far from fin-ished.10 minutes in and DeCurtis

brought the ball into the rightside of the box himself beforesneaking one on the groundunderneath a diving Medfordgoalie for his second goal ofthe game.“We feel like Nick’s a guy

that’s very dangerous up top,”said Casalino. “He’s got pace,he’s got strength and he’s agood touch on the ball. He’sgoing to be hard for teams tohandle.”As the game wore on

Casalino began subbing inbench players and they car-ried on the scoring for thePanthers.

Matt Kimak delivered theperfect pass to Jake Brzyskiwho got his foot on the ball forthe score. The goalie was outof position and hugging theside of the net Kimak was ap-proaching, which left the netwide open for Brzyski. It seemed the net stayed

open for business as Brzyskialso scored Boro’s seventhand final goal two minutes lat-er.It was Kimak again on the

left side that drew out Med-ford’s goalie as he tried tosnag Kimak’s shot. It bouncedunderneath him and Brzyskimade sure it made it’s wayinto the net before a Medforddefender was able to clear it.“When you have guys that

come in off the bench like Jakethat prove that they can finish– well then that’s going to earnthem some opportunitiesmaybe earlier in the gamenext time,” stated Casalino.“Sometimes you’re just look-ing for a spark and maybe thisgives him a little confidenceboost in case we need someinstant offense.”For video highlights of the

win under the lights watch theOcean Star Sports Show onyoutube.com.The big opening round win

will definitely bring someconfidence to the Panther

players when they host thesixth-seeded Manasquan War-riors today. The game isscheduled to begin at 11 a.m.“We scrimmaged them so

we have an idea of what theyare. They’re very disciplined. They’ll play a very organizeddefense and they’ll look tocounter attack,” explainedCasalino. “They’re a team thathas played some tough teamsin their division so they’reused to playing tough teams.”Boro’s big win makes a

statement of what the Pan-thers can bring to the table butCasalino knows that won’tplay into Manasquan’s mind-set heading into the match.Casalino is also confident thathis team will be up to the chal-lenge come game time. They don’t care that we

won seven-nothing. They’regoing to be concerned withhow they’re going to attack usand withstand the things thatwe do,” he said. “They’ll comein and they’ll play hard but I’mconfident if we play the stylewe want to play then we’llgive ourselves a good chanceto win.”

POINT BORO — Point Borosenior Natalie Dikun repre-sented the Panthers in lastweekend’s Shore ConferenceChampionships for gymnas-tics.Dikun was up against some

strong compeitition in twotough events: the vault andthe beam.“Overall she had a solid

meet,” said head coach Jennvon Doehren. But “with some

high level gymnasts compet-ing” Dikun was not able toplace in either event, shesaid. Despite not placing in her

two events Dikun still per-formed exceptionally well, much to the delight of vonDoehren.“She hit her beam routine

with no falls and overall hada successful meet,” stated vonDoehren.Next up for Dikun, as well

as teammate Riley Larsen, isthe state sectional com-peition tomorrow at BrickMemorial High School. Theduo will put forth their besteffort to represent a youngand upcoming Panther gym-nastics team.

The meet will markDikun’s last of her highschool career but she left alegacy of leadership and con-sistency for the youngergymnasts on the team tomodel themselves after.Von Doehren knows to-

morrow’s meet will be bitter-sweet, saying, “It’s going to besad this weekend being herlast meet of her career. I’mgoing to miss her a lot. She isthe kind of kid who is irre-placeable.”

some younger players andmade for good varsity experi-ence for them. Toni Abdywas in goal for Beach to earnthe shutout.“Obviously being the third

seed we knew coming intothis game that it wasn’t goingto be an easy game but it was-n’t going to be a challenge. We focused on playing pos-session, holding the ball, moving, just creating optionsfor ourselves in order to putthe ball in the back of thenet,” explained Gould. “Weobviously did a good job fin-ishing 8-0 and Toni got a shutout so that was good.”

way to begin the tournamentand the Gulls had their mindsset on the following game.“It was a good game,” said

too late for today’s OceanStar. Read next week’s paperfor continued coverage of thetournament.Heading into the game

Point Beach did not know toomuch about their opponentsbut Curtis was confident theycould handle the competi-tion.“They got a couple of good

lost fumbles and an intercep-tion.On Shore’s opening drive

they moved the ball toBeach’s six-yard line. On thesnap the Gulls had Shore’squarterback, Matt Pennell, onhis heels but he managed to

scramble his way out of dan-ger and toss the ball to Con-nor Rempel for the score.George Notte hit the extrapoint and Shore was up 7-0.It was the only score of the

first quarter and it looked likethe game could stay close toeven. Shore had other plansthough, and added fourteenpoints on two scores in thesecond quarter.

One touchdown was a two-yard run from Johnson after aShore interception gave thempossession and the other wasa four-yard run from Gold-smith. They had the opportu-nity to make the game 24-0but missed a field goal at theclose of the first half.Beach had the opportunity

to turn things around in thethird quarter while only

down three scores. That’swhen Shore turned it up anotch and scored three moretouchdowns for a big thirdquarter. They scored on a one-yard

punch from Pennell, a 21-yardburst form Johnson and a 47-yard sprint from Jack Britton.Notte continued to stay per-fect to give Shore Regional a

42-0 lead before Parry had hisshort score.John Nista finished 2-for-7

The Boro defense held Jackson Liberty in overtime but due to a roughing the punter penalty it movedLiberty into field goal range. They hit from 37-yards out to hand Point Boro their first loss of the year.

from one-yard out but Boroonly earned the extra point onthe first touchdown. The twoteams looked to go into thehalf tied at 13 but Colin Ans-bach thought differently. He drilled a 23-yard field

goal to put the Panthers aheadby three going into halftime. In the third quarter it was

Yorke who tied the game witha 27-yard field goal. Bothteams went into the fourth andfinal quarter with 16 points onthe board and a desire to snagthe victory.Van Wickle hooked up with

Yorke again on a pass for a

touchdown. Jackson Libertycould not convert the extra tryand they were holding on to asix-point lead.In dramatic fashion, with

less than four minutes left inthe game, Hayden Frey hauledin a pass from James Fara forthe 35-yard score. With thegame tied the Panthers couldnot hit the kick for the extrapoint, which sent the gameinto overtime. In the first overtime period

Point Boro got the ball on of-fense first but could not score. Then with their turn JacksonLiberty got themselves inrange and Yorke hit a 37-yardfield goal for the upset win.

It is the Panthers first loss ofthe season but something theteam will be sure to bounceback from as they move for-ward.Tomorrow the team hosts

the Lakewood Piners who areundefeated in the B South divi-sion and have only lost onegame all season. If the Panthers beat out

Lakewood they will clinch ashare of the division title.Point Boro will have to controlstand out running back AmirTyler in order to have achance. If Lakewood wins thegame they will be the solechampions of the B South. The game is on Al Saner

The Panthers jumped outwith a 6-1 victory to moveon to the next round of thetournament. It took a long 19 minutes

before Boro hit their firstgoal but it came in spectacu-lar fashion. Bergquist threwthe ball in to Julia Conwaywho passed it back andBergquist booted the ball to-wards goal to a runningWondolowski. As it turned out,

Bergquist’s ball bouncedonce in front of Pinelands’goalie, over her outstretchedarms and into the net. Theshot came from the rightsideline, 39 yards out.Three minutes later the

Panthers snagged their sec-ond goal after a throw inthat Wondolowski droppedto Fiorentino. From just in-side the box she ripped aleft-footed shot that spedpast a diving goalie.“Our captain stepped up

and scored for us with a lit-tle luck on her side andRobin stepped up with abeautiful finish,” said headcoach Mike Edolo of theirfirst two goals. “I couldn’tbe happier with the per-formance from everybody.”Boro went into the half

with a 2-0 lead and came outin the second half firingshots on goal. It took sometime before they found thenet again but they did and itwas a Seitter through ball toWondolowski that left her

one-on-one with thePinelands goalie. She kept the ball on the

ground and rolled it into thefront corner of the net. Theball bounced back out afterhitting the small 45-degreeangled bar inside the goal onthe front corner and confu-sion ensued. The refs had a brief mo-

ment of discussion beforeultimately confirming whateveryone saw: another PointBoro goal. The next Panther goal was

put in by Seitter who got onthe end of a Fitzsimmonscross that the goalie narrow-ly missed hitting out of thebox. Shortly after it was Won-

dolowski who secured pos-session of the ball in thebox, created enough room toshoot and popped one intothe net for Boro’s fifth goal.Their sixth and final goal

came with 16 minutes left inthe game. Bergquist hit thecorner kick and Fitzsim-mons got her right foot on itfor the finish.Pinelands Regional avoid-

ed the shutout in the finalminutes of the game. Off ofa corner, Boro goalie AmyeZalesky made two pointblank saves before Alexan-dra Hanna booted a reboundinto the net for Pinelandsonly goal.“Give them credit they

[Pinelands Regional]worked extremely hard es-pecially in the first half. They had a lot of playersback defending and workingreally hard to frustrate us

and they did,” said Edolo ofthe competition. “We justkind of stuck with it, keptgoing, found space, startedmoving the ball quicker, get-ting it wide and realized wehad to stretch them out a lit-tle bit.”For video highlights of

Boro’s decisive victorywatch the Ocean Star SportsShow on youtube.com.The first round win was a

good confidence boost forthe Panthers as they contin-ued on to the next round ofthe tournament.“We did a lot of good

things. We just need to makesure that we’re nice andcompact defensively and notgiving away counter attackchances,” stated Edolo. “Ithought we were solid pret-ty much everywhere but theminute we take a mentalbreak is the moment theother team scores.”On Thursday the Panthers

hosted seventh-seeded Del-ran in a game that occurredtoo late for today’s paper.Read next week’s OceanStar for full coverage.Edolo expressed confi-

dence in his team beforeThursday’s game, saying,“We know what we have todo. We know what we’regood at. We know what ourstrengths are and we needto play to them.”
