The Panthers won the game 2-0 and im- proved to 5-1 [4-0] on the season. “In the beginning we started a little slow, a little sluggish,” said Sam Monaco after the win. “We weren’t completing our passes well but once we got a couple in the net we started playing with a little more fire, clean- ing up our passes and going hard to the ball.” Monaco notched Boro’s second goal off a set piece from around 20 yards out in the final minute of the first half. “He [Donovan’s goalie] was bouncing between the posts so I waited until he got to the other side of where he was and he just couldn’t get there in time,” said Monaco. He curved his shot around the right side of the Dono- van Catholic wall and the ball dipped just inside the right post. POINT BORO — The PointBoro girls field hockey teamcapitalized on strong playfrom Devin Moeller during a6-0 shutout win on the roadSaturday.Moeller recorded a hat

trick and two assists in thewin. The Panthers went up ear-

ly 4-0 in the first half of play. They continued playing hardin the second half to add twomore goals to their total.Casey Blake, Morgan Mul-

vey and Madison Emery eachscored a goal to round outMoeller’s hat trick. The Panthers then lost a

close contest to Jackson Lib-erty on the road Monday. De-spite seven saves betweengoalies Maddie Severio andCarson Swisher, Jackson Lib-erty found the goal twice.

Gillian Vallaster scoredboth goals and teammateTayler Martini assisted onboth for Jackson Liberty. Thetwo goals came in the firsthalf of play and the Panthersdid a strong job of keepingthem from scoring more. Un-fortunately they could not gettheir offense scoring andtook their third loss of theseason. On Wednesday they trav-

POINT BORO FIELD HOCKEY NOTEBOOK

Moeller leads Boro overNeptune with hat trick

sailed just high enough forBeach goalie Toni Abdy toget two hands on it but notcatch the ball. It bounced offher gloves and into the goal. The goal did not matter

much as the Gulls only builton their lead in the secondhalf.Gould opened up the scor-

ing with her second of thematch and the Garnet Gullslead increased to 4-1.Then, 20 minutes later

freshman Nicole Sharkeytook a pass from Gould andturned it into a Point Beachgoal. The Gulls were not done

just yet though and freshmanJulia Cairns booted a one-timer inside the left post forthe final goal of the game.“It’s a testament to these

girls – how good they are. Wedidn’t play our best and westill came out with a prettycomfortable victory,” ex-plained Curtis. He was happy with the win

but felt there were times

when the girls could have stilltaken it up a level.“Sometimes I think we

slowed it down too much to-day,” he said. “We were tryingto do too many simple, littlethings where we could havebeen more aggressive andplayed faster with a little bitquicker pace.”All in all, Curtis was all

smiles after the win. Withsome small injuries duringthe game he was able to shiftplayers around and give oth-ers some more playing time. This was something he ap-preciated because it gave hima chance to see what worksand where.“It’s great giving more time

on the field for players to getcomfortable because to play alonger season you’re going toneed everybody to step up atsome point,” stated Curtis. The Garnet Gulls were

coming off a hard-foughtdraw against Monmouth onMonday.“That was a physical bat-

tle,” said Curtis. “We scoredearly then they scored 20minutes in and it became a

running game for them. Theyhigh-pressured, they ran andmoved.”Gould had the lone Beach

goal and Shannon Harrisscored for Monmouth. Bothgoals came in the first halfand both teams played theirhardest to score a second.“We lacked a little bit of

composure trying to keep theball with some of the youngergirls starting to experiencethe physicality of high schooland being on the youngerside took its toll on them,” ex-plained Curtis. The girls fought hard

though and Point Beach fin-ished with a total of 15 shots.Abdy recorded 14 saves ingoal.“They held on and played

tremendous. Had a few op-portunities to win it but itjust wasn’t happening,” statedCurtis. “It was a good gameall around for both teams. Both teams played reallywell.”Moving forward, Curtis

hopes that his team will beable to edge opponents out inclose games like the one

against Monmouth. For him,it comes down to which teamis willing to put their headsdown, grind it out and bewilling to do the dirty work.“That’s an easier thing to

coach because you’re notcoaching technique. It’s justheart and desire and go getit,” he said. “These guys haveit, they just have to now put itout there. The technique isthere and the skill is there. We just need to grind outsome wins and put the ball inthe back of the net.”Point Beach is back in ac-

Point’s Panthers score big win over Donovan CatholicPANTHERSFROM PAGE 29

Point Boro’s first goal came inthe 16th minute and includedsuperb touches through themidfield to set up a cross fromMason Weingarten to RyanGriffith.Weingarten crossed the ball

on the ground from the rightside and Griffith had oneDonovan Catholic defender tobeat besides the goalie. Withsome fancy footwork heturned the ball and the smalltouch cleared him of the de-fender and gave him enoughroom to pop it past the ap-proaching goalie.“It’s really the style we play

and for us when we get thosegoals it just reinforces the waythat we want to play,” saidhead coach Peter Casalino.Although the Panthers did

not score the rest of the gamethe two goals provided themwith security and more im-portantly, energy. DonovanCatholic seemed a bit deflatedcoming into the second half

and Boro kept pressing on de-fense and offense.“Once we got the goal I

think it really gave a confi-dence boost to the kids sothey started to play with a lit-tle more energy,” said Casali-no on the team’s first goal.“We were trying to play withenergy and I think the goal be-fore halftime was just a killerfor them [Donovan Catholic].”Monaco and a few other

Panthers could probably havefinished the game with moregoals but Donovan’s goalie,Evan Root, took away someopportunities while in goal, including three or four head-ers from Monaco.“I think Sam Monaco domi-

nated this game in the air,”stated Casalino. “It seemedlike every single punt, everysingle flighted ball, every goalkick was coming right to hishead.”Donovan Catholic knew

this to be the case but they didnot have an answer for Mona-co.Casalino hopes his captain

can continue dominating theair game, saying, “When you

have somebody that can dom-inate like that going forward ittakes a lot of pressure off theother guys and it gives them aconfidence boost to know youhave a player like that.”“In the air coach always

POINT BORO — Combininglights out defense with a syn-chronized and fluid offense, the Panther girls soccer teamcontinues toppling oppo-nents on the soccer field.Last Thursday they hosted

Pinelands Regional in a 4-0decision that saw two goalsfrom sophomore DevonWondolowski and a goalapiece for freshmen CarlieVetrini and Erin Guilfoyle.Of course, the win would

not have been a shutout hadit not been for Point Boro’sback line. Every decent ballPinelands managed to pushforward was thwarted leavingthem with little opportunityfor shots on goal.“Just in general when you

have Amye Zalesky in goaland you have a very solidback line in front of her, you’re going to controlgames,” said head coach MikeEdolo. “They do a great job ofcommunicating and readingthe game.”In addition, Edolo is happy

with the depth he has on thebackline and during Boro’swin over Pinelands he wasable to give Lauren Onemboand Jenn Petrillo more play-ing time. They did not disap-point and the defense stayedas strong as ever.“They’re just very solid,”

stated Edolo of his whole de-fense. “They understand thegame, they move early andthey have pace to recover ifthey do make mistakes but I

have all the confidence in theworld in all of them.”Scoring opened up early

when Wondolowski foundthe back of the net in the sev-enth minute on an assist fromKaitlyn Seitter.“The pairing of her [Won-

dolowski] and Kait are toughto stop,” Edolo explained af-ter the game. “Even if Kait’snot scoring and Devon is, thenext game Kait will have acouple and Devon will setthem up. They just work in agreat tandem.”A minute later Won-

dolowski added an assist toher total when she played aball through the middle in-tended for Seitter. Pinelands’goalie beat her to the ballwith a sliding kick but Boro’sCarlie Vetrini was there forthe rebound and put the ballin the net for a 2-0 Pantherlead.“It rebounded off and I

shot it in,” said Vetrini, afreshman. “It felt good, it’svery exciting and I’m so gladI had the opportunity to beplaying with everyone thisyear.”In the 22nd minute Won-

dolowski scored again to putBoro up 3-0. Seitter assistedagain and the Panthers wentinto the half up 3-0.The scoring never stopped

and neither did the Panthers’relentless pursuit of the ball. With 16 minutes left in thegame freshman Erin Guil-foyle scored Boro’s final goalof the game. Vetrini assistedher fellow freshman andhopes they continue to makean impact moving forward.

“I’m so thankful and grate-ful to be able to have the op-portunity to be playing withall the upperclassmen andstuff,” stated Vetrini.“It’s a lot of fun because

we’re still young so we knowthat we have three moreyears ahead of us to be withthe team,” added Guilfoyle.Edolo is also excited about

what the two freshmen bringto the team, saying, “I’ve seengreat things from both ofthem. Flashes of brillianceand they’re coachable and be-ing coachable is the most im-portant thing.”There is still a lot of soccer

left to be played this seasonbut the Panthers know theyhave what it takes to be thebest.“I definitely feel confident

about it as long as we worktogether and keep up whatwe’ve been doing then I thinkwe will have a successful sea-son,” explained Vetrini.Guilfoyle agrees and

knows they need to keeptheir injuries down and con-tinue to work on fitness andthe other aspects of theirgame. The rest of the week

Last week was one of thenicest September weeks wehave had in quite some time.Sunny days with light windsand oil slick calm seas madefor a boaters delight. Theaction in the surf along withthe inshore and offshorewaters did not disappoint. Inthe surf there were multipledays when false albacoreblitzed baits along the beachand striped bass were caughtwith poppers along the jet-ties. A lot of bait in the formof mullet, spearing, and bayanchovies is along the beachthat are bringing in the fish.Along the inshore waters

out to 10 miles false albacoreand small bluefish were easyto find under birds that wereblitzing baits as these fishwere pushing them to thesurface. The fluke fishingwas also decent if you werein the right spot as 4-6 lbkeepers were being caughtby the party boats and recre-ational anglers. Offshore theyellowfin bite in the Bacardiarea was on fire. Boaters thatmade the trip were handfeeding yellowfin tuna withchunks of sardines. Therewere boat limits for all onboard. Many boats had tothrow back the fish as thebite was pretty much non-stop. The yellowfin were soravenous that even fly fisher-men had no problem catch-ing tuna on the fly.Unfortunately all good

things come to an end as thenortheast wind of this week

is not letting up and as aresult is sidelining the actionfor boaters. The wind is pre-dicted to blow through thisweekend. Once this extendedblow is over I don’t think thatit will have any adverse effecton the fishery. It should pickright back up where it left off.Bob over at Fishermen’s

Den in Belmar reports “Flukefishing is nearly over. Thisweek was good in the SharkRiver and surf, offshore wasoff and on. The weather isagainst us most of this weekwith the wind keeping theboats at dock. Hoping we canget in the last few days offluke season. Rental boats aresailing.

There are plenty of flukestill in the Shark River. Someare moving toward the inletin an exit to the offshoregrounds. Striped bass fishingwas good this week in thesurf. Poppers were the plugof choice. Anglers had multi-ple hook ups. Bill Masseyfrom Wall had 6 bass in thesurf in Manasquan. Thisnortheast wind could spark agood clam bite. Snapper fish-ing has been good. Therewere also some kingfish, blowfish, and porgies takenin the river this week. Fall ishere with some of the bestfishing ahead, Bob”. Capt Howard Bogan of the

Big Jamaica out of Briellereports “Our last tuna tripduring last week’s calmweather was a very good one.We started the trip fishingfor mahi and it was anotherday of mahi madness. Wecaught over 250 mahi up to 20lbs. After that we set up on adrift for tuna. TrevorBenevento from NY landedthe first tuna which was alongfin. Shortly after that 100lb to 200 lb bigeyes schooledup under the boat and it wasa bigeye bonanza. We readtuna under the boat from 100feet to 250 feet down. Jiggingwas the best method forcatching the bigeyes and yel-lowfin. We had hot actionuntil about 3:30am with asmany as 4 of the big beastshooked up at a time.Trevor Benevento added a

bigeye and a limit of mahi to

his catch. Anthony Lalli hadhis limit of mahi and 2bigeyes. Geno Mautschkefrom Brooklyn, NY had hislimit of mahi, one bigeye, andone yellowfin. Rob Finklefrom Sparta had a chippedceramic guide that cost himseveral bigeyes but he dis-covered it in time to bail outwith his limit of yellowfinand a limit of mahi. PedroDeCosta from Yonkers, NYcaught two bigeyes and alimit of mahi. Erik Bogan hadoff from school and made thetrip. He jigged for 3 straighthours before connecting witha small yellowfin. A littleafter that he hooked into hisfirst ever bigeye that hit thedeck after a 30 minute battleat about 200 lbs. After 3:30amwe still read plenty of fishbut the bites slowed down.We did add a few more fishafter that including a sword-fish and a couple of tilefishafter sunrise. We wound upwith 14 bigeyes up to 200 lbs,8 yellowfin, 1 longfin, 1swordfish, 2 tilefish, and 280mahi. It looks good forupcoming trips. More tunaare moving into the canyonevery day. just came out kind of flat. It’sbeen a long time since Fridaypractice so we weren’t quiteready to go,” explained Han-niffy. “It took us about 10points to shake it off and thenwe tied it back up and tookthe lead.”The Gulls relied on strong
