vor of the Hawks, the Pan-thers still had a chance in thefourth quarter. But for every shot the Pan-

thers managed to make, theHawks would make one, too. This kept them out ahead, se-

curing the win 49-30 by thefinal whistle.

on the road against DonavanCatholic on Monday. Tipoff isscheduled for 6:30 p.m.

next three matchups if theywere going to make it to thenext round of the tourna-ment.Stepping up for Point Boro

was heavyweight Dominic In-fante, who won the 285-poundweight class by pinning Man-alapan’s Peter Williams in thefirst period.Even though Point Boro

was losing prior to his match,Infante never let it get to hishead.“I just knew I needed to get

as many points as I could tokeep us going and give every-one else an opportunity to dotheir job,” he said. “It wasn’tmy first time pumping up so Iknew what to expect. I knewwhat I had to do.”

The calm demeanorshowed on the mat as Infantestuck to his game plan andquickly got a feel for his op-ponent.“I knew I just had to stay in

his head, wear him out a littlebit and he’d give in,” ex-plained Infante. As planned, his opponent

gave in and Infante pinnedhim on the mat amidst cheersfrom parents and coaches. With the Panthers up 32-30,

the 160-pound bout was un-der way. Ben Sabo of PointBoro pinned his opponent inthe first period, putting thematch out of reach for theManalapan Braves. In the final bout of the

match, Panther Blake Dalepinned his opponent 16 sec-onds into the first period. ThePanthers won by a score of44-30.

POINT BORO VS. BRICKImmediately following the

preliminary round, PointBoro went on to face theBrick Township Dragons inthe pre-quarterfinals round, losing 42-21.The match began well for

the Panthers as 126-pounderNobbs won his bout by deci-sion and Ehrhardt won the132-pound weight class by de-cision.Brick Township put their

first points on the board inthe 138-pound bout, whereJack McLafferty won by tech-nical fall, leaving the Dragonsdown 6-5.Boro’s Pete Gencarelli

claimed victory by pin in the145-pound weight class, givingthe Panthers a 12-5 lead beforeBrick Township won the nextsix bouts.Dragon Nick Wojtaszek

won the 152-pound bout by

decision, while teammatesWill Scott and Kyle Wojtaszekwon the 160- and 170-poundbouts by technical fall. Thisgave Brick Township an 18-12lead.Point Boro then forfeited

the 182- and 195-pound boutsbefore losing the 220-poundweight class with a pin by An-thony Rusignuolo of BrickTownship. With Point Boro down 36-

12 and four bouts left in thematch, the Panthers needed apin in every matchup in orderto tie the Dragons after 14bouts.Answering the call once

again, Infante won the heavy-weight bout for Boro by pin-ning his opponent in the sec-ond period.Unfortunately for Boro,

Sabo could not win again, los-ing the 106-pound matchup

by decision in a hard-foughtbout for the Panthers. This put the match out of

reach for Point Boro as theDragons claimed victory bydecision in the 113- and 120-pound weight classes, win-ning the match 42-21.Brick Township went on to

lose to Toms River South inthe tournament quarterfinalsby a score of 33-27. Brick Me-morial High School won theShore Conference Tourna-ment, defeating Jackson Me-morial 33-24 in the finals.Coming up next is a most

The first quarter really setthe tone for the next three. Both Point Beach and Key-port played aggressive de-fense out of the gate and bythe end of the first, the twoteams were tied at 4.The second quarter was abit slower for the Gulls asthey added six to their totalwhile the Red Raiders added11. Going into the half PointBeach was trailing 15-10.The third quarter was themost nerve-racking one ofthe game with multiple leadchanges throughout. PointBeach came out hot with a 6-0 run to claim the lead 16-15.Keyport then hit one oftwo shots from the freethrow line to even out thescore at 16.In a great defensive effort,Cameron Barnes stole theball from the Red Raiders andwith quick and accurate ballmovement, the Gulls turnedit into two points with alayup from Casey Sloan.Trailing 18-16, the RedRaiders had another opportu-nity at the foul line. Sinkingthe first shot, all they neededto do was make the second totie. They missed, but Key-port’s Caitlin Harrigansnagged the offensive re-bound and put up a shot toreclaim a one-point lead. The Garnet Gulls then tiedit up again with a free throwand it looked as though thefourth quarter would startwith the teams tied up.But with seconds left in thethird quarter, Harrigan man-aged to score from the paintas the buzzer sounded givingthe Red Raiders a two-pointlead.Coach Haycook providedher players with encourage-ment hoping to keep spiritsup as they were trailing latein the game.

“I told them to keep fight-ing, that we’re still in thegame, that you can neverhang your heads and you justhave to keep working hardand be aggressive — and theydid that,” explained Haycook.Even though Point Beachhad just finished three quar-ters, the team looked re-freshed and ready to claim avictory in the final quarter.Scoring first for the Gullswas Barnes, taking the ball

along the baseline and finish-ing with an uncontestedlayup to even out the score. Then in another greatshow of defense, ShannonLane of Point Beach stole theball and took it the length ofthe court for an easy layupand the lead at 23-21.Keyport responded, mak-ing two foul shots to tie thescore once more. With the home crowdyelling support for Point

Beach, the Gulls answeredbig with a nothing-but-net 3-pointer from senior captainSam Trabbatoni. The Red Raiders kept play-ing hard, though, comingwithin one point on two oc-casions.With the score 28-27 in fa-vor of Point Beach, theRaiders were frustrated andone of their players was givena technical foul, awarding theGulls two shots at the free-throw line and an opportuni-ty to extend their lead.Unfortunately, PointBeach’s Molly Laterza missedboth shots from the line butas any great basketball playerdoes, she never let it inter-rupt her outstanding play.On the following offensiveplay for the Gulls, Laterzadribbled around defendersalong the baseline and put upa smooth reverse layup. TheRaiders fouled her in an ef-fort to stop the shot but itdropped in the net and gaveLaterza a chance at a 3-pointplay. Laterza sunk the freethrow giving the Gulls a 31-27lead with two minutes left inthe game.Keyport never let up butagain it was Laterza whodrilled a jumper from thefield to increase the Gulls’lead to six, much to the de-light of the home crowd. With Keyport in foul trou-ble there was not much theycould do with only a minuteleft in regulation time. Tryingto stop the clock by foulingthe Point Beach players did-n’t work in their favor as theGulls made the majority oftheir foul shots in the lastminute of the game. TheRaiders managed two morepoints before the final whis-tle blew as the Garnet Gullsclaimed victory on theirhome court 36-29.

OUTSTANDING PLAYIt was truly a team effortfrom Point Beach as sevendifferent players scored inthe win over Keyport. Stand-ing out above the rest wasLaterza, who never seemedto run out of gas. She put in a

strong effort and seemed toalways be the one chasingdown loose balls and not giv-ing up on plays, turning theminto opportunities for theGulls.A true team player, Laterzacredits her team with thewin, saying, “It felt good towin a game and help the oth-er girls. We really came to-gether as a team.”Laterza did a great job offocusing on giving her all andnot sweating the small stuff.“I’ve been playing basket-ball a long time, I just playthe game,” she explained.“Bad plays, good plays, youplay the game 100 percent.”Laterza finished the gamewith eight points, three stealsand one assist. Errine Reganadded six points, all of themfrom beyond the arc. Barnesand Trabbatoni both had fivepoints, with Barnes leadingthe team in assists with fiveand Trabbatoni leading theteam in rebounds with six. Also scoring for the Gullswere Sydney Schifano, Sloanand Lane with four pointsapiece.

KEYS TO VICTORYThree things stood out inthe win over Keyport: relent-less defense, great ball move-ment and keeping playmak-ers in check.Point Beach had a total of12 steals during Tuesday’sgame. They played strong de-fense throughout and neverseemed to lose the energythey started out with.“We played all four quar-ters,” Laterza said after thegame. “We played great de-fense and offense. We sawour weaknesses and weworked on them.”On the offensive side, thegirls did a great job of movingthe ball around and getting itinto different players hands. With seven different playersscoring for the Gulls, it madeit difficult for Keyport to con-centrate on any one player. This was a huge advantagefor Point Beach as the gamecontinued.

The Garnet Gulls also did agood job of shutting downHarrigan, a sizeable threatbelow the basket.“Last time we played Key-port, she [Harrigan] killed us.She scored 15 points,” saidHaycook. “We did a reallygood job on her this time.”While Harrigan managed10 points in the game, theGulls completely shut herdown in the fourth quarterwhere she didn’t score a sin-gle point.According to Haycook, thebig difference was switchingto a matchup zone defensethis game instead of man-to-man.Point Beach’s offensive anddefensive play secured thevictory for them Tuesday asthey hope to continue capi-talizing and improving ontheir strengths.

POINT BEACH VS. RANNEYPrior to their win at home, the Gulls hosted RanneySchool last Friday, losing 42-18.Point Beach was only ableto score nine points in thefirst half. They also scorednine points in the secondhalf, all of those coming inthe fourth quarter.Regan and Trabbatoni ledthe team with four pointsapiece. Trabbatoni also fin-ished with six rebounds, anassist and a steal. Reganadded two rebounds to hertotal. Lane added three pointsto the total, along with six re-bounds, three assists and asteal.Point Beach went on toplay Keansburg last night onthe road, which occurred toolate for this edition of TheOcean Star.
