BY DOMINICK POLLIO THE OCEAN STAR BARNEGAT — Point Pleasant Borough matched up against the Barnegat Bengals in Sat- urday’s quad match. They took down the host team with a decisive, 50-19 victory. “We started in the 170- pound weight class and everyone wrestled well,” coach Pat Brady said about the win. “The lower weight classes really came through and everyone was out attack- ing and trying to get points for the team.” The Panthers’ two-time state qualifier, Dan Nobbs, picked up his 100th career win during the match in the 127-pound weight class, an exciting moment for him and the team. “He is a great kid,” said Brady. “Both on and off the mat.” BORO DEFEATS LACEY Point Boro also claimed a comfortable victory over Lacey Township at Saturday’s quad match. The Panthers won by a score of 49-20, with only 12 points coming from forfeits. Boro jumped out with a solid 24-point lead with for- feits by Lacey in the 182- and 220-pound weight classes, and pins by Boro in the heavyweight and 195-pound weight classes. Josh Vitale of Point Boro pinned his opponent in the second period of the 195- pound bout, while Dominic Infante won the heavyweight bout by pin with two seconds left in the third period. The Lacey Lions recorded their first team points when Boro’s Ben Sabo lost by deci- sion in the 106-pound bout. The Panthers kept going strong, though, with Blake Dale, Dylan Davies, and Nobbs winning the 113-, 120- and 126-pound weight class- es, respectively, and increas- ing their lead 37-3. Garnet Gull senior Mike Frauenheim scored 18 points during the win with eight points from beyond the arc. He received help from teammate Jimmy Panzini who put up 14 points of his own. “We came out strong in the first quarter and estab- lished a solid lead,” ex- plained Point Beach coach Nick Catania. It was a solid win for the Garnet Gulls who really played hard and consistent- ly throughout the game. “We played well togeth- er,” stated Catania. “Our in- tensity really carried us through the entire game.” Also putting up double digits on the board for the Gulls was Mike Rice who finished with nine points from three-point land and four from the field for a to- tal of 13 points. It’s safe to say that in their second meeting, there would be a clear victor. In a thrilling game last Fri- day night, the Panthers de- feated the Purple Roses 5-4 on the road. The first period began pretty routinely until Point Boro’s Kyle Johnson netted the first goal of the game with an assist from teammate Chris Miller. Less than one minute later, St. Rose responded with a goal of its own to even out the score at one. The Purple Roses didn’t stop there, though, as Connor Cassidy scored a power-play goal for St. Rose. Cassidy then scored a second time with 44 seconds left in the first period, claiming the lead at 3-1. Not playing terribly, Boro coach Alex DePalma encour- aged his team to keep playing hard. “I told them to just keep taking shots and to keep play- ing your game,” DePalma said. The second period be- longed to the Panthers as they responded well to being down. Panther Owen Her- rington scored a short-hand- ed goal to bring them within one. Ryan Patterson then tied up the game with a short- handed goal of his own and an assist from Herrington. day night, the Panthers de-feated the Purple Roses 5-4on the road.The first period began

St. Rose responded with agoal of its own to even outthe score at one.The Purple Roses didn’t

His grandfather wrestled.His father wrestled. His un-cles and even his brother allwrestled. I guess you couldsay that Dan Nobbs wasborn to wrestle.Senior wrestler for Point

Boro High School, Nobbshas been wrestling since hewas two years old.This past weekend, in a

match against Barnegat,Nobbs recorded his 100thcareer win, an accomplish-ment worth noting.Humbly admitting how

nervous he was before the

match, Nobbs went out onthe mat and did what he’dbeen doing his whole life.He wrestled.“It was a good moment,”

said Nobbs, thinking aboutthe victory. “I was a little re-lieved because I finally gotit. It was great; pretty emo-tional, too.”Point Boro Coach Pat

Brady thought it was a welldeserved achievement forNobbs.“It’s exciting,” he said. “It’s

great to see a kid whoworked so hard achieve a

milestone like that and haveit pay off for him with hisfamily there and all histeammates there.”Brady holds Nobbs in

high esteem, recognizing hisleadership throughout hiscareer at Point Boro.“Dan has been awesome

since the day he steppedinto the wrestling room hereat the Boro. He’s been aworkhorse for four yearsand even a leader coming inas a freshman,” stated Brady.According to Brady,

Nobbs really stepped up hisrole as leader in his senioryear.“He is teaching the

younger guys what is ex-pected of them, how wetrain and how we do thingshere at the Boro. On and offthe mat,” said Brady.Nobbs truly appreciates

his time as a Pantherwrestler, saying, “When youstep into this programyou’re immediately part ofthis huge family. So many

people come together andsupport you and help youout. Brady says all the timethat if we need anything he’salways there for us andthat’s one hundred percenttrue.”Already going through

shoulder and knee surgery,Nobbs isn’t sure if he willcontinue wrestling afterhigh school.He wants to attend col-

lege and pursue a degree inbusiness and is thinkingabout a career as a police of-ficer.Nobbs joins 11 other dis-

tinguished wrestlers inPoint Boro history as a 100match winner.

POINT PLEASANT BORO — ThePanthers fell short at homeThursday night against thevisiting Golden Eagles ofCentral Regional by a scoreof 62-53.It was a close game

throughout, but Central Re-gional managed to run awaywith the win in the end.After trailing the Golden

Eagles by six points at theend of the first quarter, thePanthers came up big beforethe half. They scored 16points while Central Region-al only added 11, leaving PointBoro trailing 30-29 at half-time.Unfortunately, the second

quarter was the only quarterthe Panthers outscored theEagles as they piled on pointsthroughout the second half.At the end of the third

quarter Point Boro foundthemselves down five pointsbut could not seem to getwithin reach of Central Re-gional.The Golden Eagles scored

another 17 in the final quarter,winning the game 62-53.Point Boro junior Matt

VanNostrand led the waywith a game-high 21 points,nine of those points comingfrom beyond the arc. PantherJohn Venturi added 15 pointswith six points coming fromthree-point land.Point Boro’s away game

against Donovan Catholic onTuesday was postponed untilFeb. 7 due to snow.The Panthers will take on

Manchester Township HighSchool tonight at home withthe game scheduled to beginat 6:30 p.m.

POINT PLEASANT BEACH —The Garnet Gulls lost at

home Thursday night toMater Dei Prep by a score of40-18.It was a tough game for

Point Beach as the teamfound itself down 15-4 by theend of the first half.Coming out of the half and

into the third quarter, theGulls only managed four

points. Mater Dei put up 17more, significantly increas-ing their lead.Though trailing by 24 at

the beginning of the fourthquarter, the Gulls never gaveup, scoring 10 points beforethe final whistle.Casey Sloan of Point

Beach finished the game

with seven points, seven re-bounds and one steal. SamTrabbatoni added sevenpoints of her own as well asthree rebounds, a block andan assist.For Mater Dei, Brooke

Trotta scored a game-high 13points. Teammate CassidyStimpson finished with nine

points and a game-high sixrebounds.Point Beach is now 1-8 for

the season and Mater Deimoves to 8-3.The Gulls’ B Central road

matchup against St. Rose onTuesday has been postponeduntil Feb. 7.

Point Beach will take onRanney School tonight athome starting at 5:30 p.m.

Boro loses two on the road

BAYVILLE — The Panthersgirls basketball team fell tothe Golden Eagles on theroad by a score of 64-56 lastThursday evening.Point Boro led 12-11 at the

end of the first quarter butcould not carry its momen-tum over into the next quar-ter.During the second quarter,

Central Regional added 18points to its total while theBoro only added six, endingthe first half down 29-18.The Panthers never let up,

scoring 19 points in both thethird and fourth quarters.Unfortunately, it was notenough to overcome theirfirst-half deficit.The Golden Eagles put up

35 points in the second half,going on to win 64-56. Theyalso hit a total of 10 shotsfrom 3-point range, whichcontributed to the win.“I thought the girls played

well in the loss consideringthe 3-pointers,” said Borocoach David Drew.“Central Regional was

shooting really well. Takeaway a few of those 3-point-ers and we have ourselves awin,” Drew added.Point Boro senior guard

Lindsey Havens led the Pan-thers with 15 points, six re-bounds, three assists and twosteals.Sophomore guard Amye

Zalesky added 13 points ofher own as well as seven re-bounds, three assists and onesteal. Boro senior center Bri-anna Skinner had a team-high11 rebounds and contributed9 points in the loss.

HAVENS WITH THE HOT HANDThe Panthers went on to

play Freehold Township HighSchool on the road Saturdayand lost 63-52.In a pattern similar to the

loss against Central Regional,Point Boro found itself downat the half by a score of 27-15.In the second half, the Pan-

thers put up 37 points, but itwas not enough to secure thewin over the Patriots.Drew was proud of how

the girls played, especiallycoming off the loss to CentralRegional.“We could’ve put our tails

between our legs and notcompete, but our girls came

out and played hard against atop-10 team,” stated Drew.Despite the loss, Havens

finished with a game-high 28points, 12 of them comingfrom beyond the arc. She fin-ished with a game-high sevensteals in addition to four re-bounds and one assist.“When somebody is hot

like that we try and get herthe ball as much as possible,”said Coach Drew. “We haveplays designed to get certainpeople the ball, so we workon getting it to the hot hand.”Point Boro sophomore

guard Megan Hughes madesome noise of her own,adding 11 points, six re-bounds, an assist and a steal.Freehold had a couple

players finish with pointshigher than 20. Samantha Fa-

mulare finished with 23points and Victoria Wagnerfinished with 21 points and agame-high 15 rebounds.The Panthers drop to 7-5

on the season while the Patri-ots move to 9-5.Point Boro’s game against

Donovan Catholic at homethis past Tuesday has beenpostponed until Feb. 7 due tosnow.The Panthers will play on

the road against ManchesterTownship High Schooltonight with tipoff set for6:30 p.m.

three of the next four bouts, butstill found themselves trailingthe Panthers 41-20.The Point Boro Panthers’

Brandon Defeo and GeneFransceschini won the last twobouts of the match in the 160-and 170-pound weight classes,solidifying an already com-manding victory. Defeo won the 160-pound

bout by decision 5-2 andFransceschini claimed victoryby technical fall in the 170-pound weight class.

BORO VS. TOMS RIVER NORTHIn the most exciting match of

the day, Point Boro fell short tothe Toms River NorthMariners 35-27.The match began with the

195-pound weight class, whereToms River claimed victory bypin. They then won the 220-pound and heavyweight bouts,taking a 13-0 lead before forfeit-ing the 106-pound bout andgiving Point Boro its firstpoints of the match.In the following 113-pound

bout, Dale pinned his opponentin the first period, bringing thePanthers within one.The Mariners won the next

weight class by decision before126-pounder Nobbs pinned hisopponent to give Boro the leadat 18-16.With victories in the next

two bouts, Toms River Northreclaimed a 4-point lead.Point Boro’s Pete Gencarelli

then won the 145-pound boutby decision while the Marinerswon the 152-pound bout bydecision, keeping the lead 25-21.The next bout came down to

the third period. Defeo of PointBoro pinned his opponent inthe 160-pound weight class,reclaiming the lead for thePanthers 27-25 with two boutsto go.

In the 160-pound bout, TomsRiver North won by majordecision which, in turn, wonthe match, as Boro was unableto put anyone on the mat forthe 182-pound weight class.“We went after them every

bout,” coach Brady said aboutthe team’s effort. “Toms Riveris a good, big and competitiveteam.”

BORO FALLS TO WALL TOWNSHIPPrior to Saturday’s quad

match, the Panthers suffered atough loss at home as they fellto the Crimson Knights of WallTownship 45-30 Friday night.The match saw a total of 10

pins between the two squads,with five for Point Boro andfive for Wall Township.While it is always tough to

lose at home, Brady was posi-tive about his team’s perform-ance.“We were competitive the

whole match,” he said.

“Unfortunately, we didn’t comeout on the winning side thistime.”It started with the 170-pound

bout, where Boro’s RyanSansone lost by decision toWall’s Nick Iezzi. The Knightsclaimed victory in the nextthree weight classes, givingthem an early 19-0 lead.Panther heavyweight

Dominic Infante recorded thefirst points for Boro by pinninghis opponent in the third peri-od of their bout. Sabo of PointBoro followed suit, pinning hisopponent and bringing thePanthers within seven.Unfortunately, that was the

smallest lead held by WallTownship for the match.The Knights ran away with

the victory, winning five of thenext eight bouts.

LOOKING AHEADThe Point Pleasant Borough

wrestling team has claimed the

No. 14 seed in this week’s ShoreConference Tournament.The tournament was expect-

ed to begin Tuesday, but becauseof the snow, the first threerounds will be held tonight.The Panthers will take on the

No. 19-seeded ManalapanBraves during the first round, setto begin at 4 p.m.The winner of that round will

face the No. 2-seeded BrickTownship Dragons in the sec-ond round, beginning at 5:30 p.m.The winner of the second

round will then compete in thequarterfinals at 7:30 p.m. againstthe winner of the Toms RiverSouth vs. Toms River Northmatchup.The semifinals and finals will

be held Saturday at JacksonLiberty High school starting at 3p.m.

BAYVILLE — It was a rivetingmatch on Saturday morningfor the Garnet Gulls wrestlingteam and fans. After trailing the Golden

Eagles for the first 10 bouts,Point Beach pulled a team re-versal to claim the victory onthe road.“It was a good atmosphere

The third period com-menced and it looked as ifthese two teams would endin a tie once again.

Herrington had a differentoutcome in mind and with anassist from Kyle NiekraszHerrington, scored the game-winner for the Panthers with5:44 left on the clock.

With the Purple Roses un-able to score another goal,Point Boro snagged a much-deserved win in a hard-fought battle.

“Owen’s goal was a wickedshot over the goalie’s shoul-der,” said DePalma. “It was agood way to win.”

Herrington finished thegame with two goals and twoassists, and Patterson fin-ished with two goals. GoalieCooper Klotz recorded 18saves in the game.

The Panthers now hold arecord of 6-4-3. Their gameagainst Donovan Catholic onTuesday was canceled due tosnow.

MANASQUAN — The PointBeach-Manasquan swimteam swept Red BankCatholic on Friday evening ina dual meet.The girls team beat the

Caseys 97-73. It was the firsttime the girls team has beat-en Red Bank Catholic in adual meet.The girls team was lead by

Sarah Brennan, KathrynPetrone and Sophie Smith,who all won two individualraces.Brennan finished first in

the 200 freestyle and the 400freestyle.She won the 200 freestyle

in 2:12.66 and the 400freestyle in 4:46.56.Petrone won the 100 but-

terfly and the 100 breast-stroke.She won the 100 butterfly

in 1:08.07 and the 100 breast-stroke in 1:18.36.Sophie Smith won the 50

freestyle in 27.52 and the 100freestyle in 1:02.20.The Warriors won the 200

medley relay in 2:10.51. Theyalso won the 200 freestylerelay in 1:53.49.The Caseys got two wins

from Jaclyn Van Lew. Shewon the 200 individual med-ley [IM] in 2:22.44 and the 100backstroke in 1:06.70.

Red Bank Catholic alsowon the 400 freestyle relay in4:10.50.The boys team beat the

Caseys 131-31.Seniors Jake Hegna and

James Grieb both won twoindividual races apiece.Hegna won the 50 freestyle

in 24.90 and the 400 freestylein 4:24.31.Grieb won the 200 IM in

John Robinson won the200 freestyle in 2:17.48 whileLuke McDonald finished firstin the 100 butterfly in 58.91.Adam Durrua won the 100
