Where did Evil come from and did it always exist?• Genesis 1:1 and 2

Gen 1:1 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.

Gen 1:2 And the earth [became] without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.

To get the complete picture, we have to go back further than the creation of the earth. •God first created the angels (and gave them their own place to inhabit) and there was no evil or sin.He created 3 levels of angels:

Lower angels (they would look like and be able to act like humans – you couldn’t tell the difference )

Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares. (Hebrews 13:2)

He created a class of angels called seraphim: they were used by God to do his work.

He created a higher class of angels called cherubs.These were very different in appearance from

what we think of as angels. Above these cherubs, God created a special

cherub full of light and very beautiful, with perfect wisdom; perfect in all his ways and he had musical instruments built into him. He was so bright that he was classed as the light bearer (Lucifer).

Some people believe that he was in charge of leading the other angels in worship of God.

He was the only angel allowed to be close to God.

Ezek 28:11 Moreover the word of the LORD came to me, saying, (12) Son of man, take up a lamentation on the king of Tyre [the angelic power behind Tyre], and say to him, Thus said the Lord GOD; You seal up the sum [you were the unique highest being of my creation], full of wisdom, and perfect in beauty. (13) You have been in Eden the garden of God; every precious stone was your covering, the sardius, topaz, and the diamond, the beryl, the onyx, and the jasper, the sapphire, the emerald, and the carbuncle, and gold: the workmanship of your [tambourines] and of your pipes was prepared in you in the day that you were created. (14) You are the anointed cherub that covers; and I have set you so: you were on the holy mountain of God; you have walked up and down in the middle of the stones of fire. (15) You were perfect in your ways from the day that you were created, until iniquity was found in you.

Job 38:4 “Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth? Tell me, if you possess understanding!Job 38:5 Who set its measurements – if you know – or who stretched a measuring line across it?Job 38:6 On what were its bases set, or who laid its cornerstone –Job 38:7 when the morning stars sang in chorus, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?So we know that Lucifer was a perfect holy angel because there were no evil angels and Lucifer had to have been there shouting for joy along with the other angelic beings – in fact probably leading them.

•This brings us up to Genesis 1:2- Something happened.Gen 1:2 And the earth [became] without form, and void; and

darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.

•What happened was a rebellion in the heavens that seemed to have effected the earth.

Ezekiel 28:15-17 and Isaiah 14:12-14 tell us of the sin that entered into Lucifer’s heart.

Ezekiel 28:15-19 and Isaiah 14:12-17 give us a more complete picture of the sort of destruction of the earth that happened as a judgment against Lucifer.

So we see that pride was the first sin, and we can see that it’s at the heart of all sin.

Ezek 28:15 You were perfect in your ways from the day that you were created, until [sin] was found in you.Ezek 28:16 By the multitude of your merchandise they have filled the midst of you with violence, and you have sinned: therefore I will cast you as profane out of the mountain of God: and I will destroy you, O covering cherub, from the midst of the stones of fire.Ezek 28:17 Your heart was lifted up [full of pride] because of your beauty, you have corrupted your wisdom by reason of your brightness: I will cast you to the ground, I will lay you before kings, that they may behold you.

And so Lucifer was kicked out of heaven, although he still has access to heaven and the throne of God to accuse God’s people before the throne and God. And now we come to the familiar event recorded in Genesis 3. God re-created the earth and it was pure and holy. God even said it was “very good.” (Gen. 1:31)Then along came Lucifer (who was now Satan) and He deceived the woman with the same tactics he has used in one form or another throughout the ages. • Doubt: “Oh, has God really said that?…” (Gen.

3:1)• Denial of God’s punishment for sinning: “You shall

not suddenly die” (Gen.3:4)

• Make God to appear to be evil: “God knows you’ll have your eyes opened and become like Him and He’s jealous of that, He’s evil to make you stay blind to what you can be” (Gen. 3:5)• Appeal to pride (his first sin): “You shall be like

God.” (Gen. 3:5).Eve yielded to the temptation, although Adam was right there (probably warning her against eating the fruit), and disobeyed God because she doubtless let her pride cause her to rebel. Then Adam ate of the fruit to join Eve in her rebellion.In that way evil entered the human race and it brought the curse of death with it, as God promised it would – not suddenly, but very surely because all of us will die some day – if Jesus delays His return.

This is the way Satan presents himself to us – as an angel of light.He tries to convince us that what he wants us to do is not evil, but will give us pleasure or will be beneficial or “Nobody will know.”

He seldom appears as anything frightening or evil like we see in popular presentations of him.He uses his wisdom to try to cause us to doubt God’s clear word and to twist it to have another meaning than the clear word has.
