few citizens, Lassen was ableto form a junior varsity team.A total of 37 players came outto play, some never havingtouched a lacrosse stick be-fore. Lassen has been coaching

for close to 17 years and be-lieves the sport can be thenext big thing in Point Pleas-ant.“My goal is really just to

make people aware that thereis a lacrosse program, thebenefits of lacrosse, and it’s afun sport,” he said.He said he hopes the town

will be just as enthusiasticabout embracing the newsport as the players are aboutplaying it.“I want to make it a main-

stream point,” he said.Lassen said he understands

how difficult it can be to starta new team and that it is aprocess that takes some time. From setting up drills, teach-ing the drills and teaching thegame, there is a bit of a learn-ing curve. Now that the team has one

season under their belt,Lassen said he hopes theycan come back and get rightinto it. Lassen looks to theupperclassmen to take thenew guys under their wingsand show them the ropes. Heis focusing his efforts on not

only teaching the playershow to play the game, but tocreate a passion for it as well.“You’re not going to prac-

tice hard if you don’t love it,”he said. “One of my goals isto have them grow to love thesport."The junior varsity team is

excited and looking forwardto the start of this year’s sea-son as a varsity program.Based on last year’s per-

formance, Lassen stressedhow the team’s enthusiasmand year around dedicationwill make the upcoming sea-son a successful one.“I have a core of athletes

who have had the stick intheir hands continually nowwhich will only make theprogram better,” said Lassen. One last challenge he has

to tackle is getting the sportto a younger audience.“The biggest challenge is

going to be creating a feederprogram,” said Lassen. “Ineed to get the lacrosse stickin the hands of third-gradersand second-graders.”Last spring, Lassen held a

lacrosse clinic every Sunday.Around 40 kids participatedin learning the sport and hehopes that number grows thenext time around.“I had third- and fourth-

graders with sticks in theirhands and that’s where I be-lieve the future is,” he said.As the varsity team’s head
