ST. ROSE CHURCH SEPTEMBER 3, 2017
Rush hours and commuting are rated one ofthe highest stress factors in today's world. The convenience and speed of vehicles andhighways are outweighed by aggravating traf-fic tie-ups. Not to mention the frustration ofcoping with construction, detours and speedbumps. We have so much to accomplish, weresent anything that slows us down. So muchmore would get done if everything would getout of our way.Ever wonder if God feels thesame way? Working with Hiseternal "to do" list of reachingthe lost, comforting the griev-ing, healing the sick, does Hesigh at the constant derailmentof His plans? Worse yet, are wepersonally the speed bumps inHis highway?Peter faced that painful revelation in today'sreading. Usually so quick to declare his faith,Peter planted his fear like a stop sign onGod's highway. It took Jesus' rebuke to movePeter aside so that God's will could be accom-plished.
As we go through this week let's ask our-selves: Have I become a speed bump or stopsign for God's work? If so, let's take a giantstep of faith, right out of God's way.++++++++++++++++++++++++

You can change the worldThrough the gift of free will,
humans can choose to do good orchoose evil. Most choose good, butwhen we learn of sufferingcaused by evil in theworld, we can feeldiscouraged andpowerless. Yet,through God, wehave the power totransform theworld.
Don't dependon you. "Trust inthe Lord with allyour heart, anddo not rely onyour own insight"(Proverbs 3:5). Fixing this fallenworld is beyond our abilities alone.God has the power, however, to bringtrue peace and healing to the world.Lay all your concerns at God's feet andthen have confidence that he is atwork.
Choose the good, Evil can becontagious. Sometimes the best wayto live a life of good is to avoid bad
influences or people that can pullus away from God. '~.. Pursue

Maintain your spiritual healthJust as visiting the doctor for regular checkups is key to
maintaining our physical health, consistentmaintenance is important for good spiritual health.Try these suggestions to craft a schedule to stay in topspiritual condition: '
Daily: Everything we need to know to strengthenour consciences and make good decisions is in theBible. It is in Scripture that we discover God's guidingvoice. Take time daily to pray, read Scripture, and ask theHoly Spirit to reveal its message for you.
Weekly: Attend Mass each Sunday and Holy Day.
Do whatever is necessary so you can receiveCommunion. This is key.
..• Monthly: When we hold ourselvesI. )~ accountable, our actions become more pleasing
to God. Seek forgiveness each month in the') Sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession).
Annually: In our noisy world, it can be hard tohear God's voice. Find a Catholic retreat center nearyou and get away with God. Or, spend a whole dayin a favorite park or vacation spot praying andlistening. Center your day around God.
fromS ·cripture .Q If God is everywhere,& i why do we have to,Ai attend Mass?
Matthew 20: 1-16a,Better late than never
In this Gospel reading, Jesuscompared God's kingdom to avineyard in the charge of agenerous landlord. In theparable, the landlord hiredgroups of workers at differenttimes of the day: at the startof the workday, at
::~~ft~:~i~;~~~~~'finallY, at ~~~~; ,five o'clock in the evening. ~/JYethe paid all the same wage.
The vineyard is God's kingdomand God is the landlord. Some Biblescholars propose that the earlier groupsof workers represented the Jewishpeople, who had followed God's lawsfor thousands of years, while the
Gentiles were the latecomers. Theworkers also stood for those whom
God calls at different stages oflife: from infancy,
adolescence, adulthood, and old age.All the laborers receivedthe same reward. It must
~".;:; have shocked Jesus'\: ~ listeners to hear that the.; ~, landlord paid those~ • who worked one hour
as if they'd worked for eight.Still, all were rewarded. Clearly, God'sways are not our ways. What isimportant is not how many hourswe've served God, but that we servedhim when he called us.
While God is everywhere, he is presentin the Eucharist in a special way. When,
(~ in the context of the~? Mass, the priest speaks
~ the words of~~ consecration over
• the bread and,-.. wine on the
altar, they are mysteriously transformedinto the Body, Blood, Soul, andDivinity of Christ. Although thecharacteristics of the bread and wineremain, they are substantially different(Catechism of the Catholic Church,#1376). In that moment, Jesus is aspresent as he was to his Apostles in theUpper Room.
The Eucharist does for our souls whatfood does for our bodies. You wouldn'tgo for weeks without eating and stillexpect to be strong and healthy. Fromthe Eucharist, we receive all the graceswe need for the rest of the week. Jesussays, "Come to me, all you who labor andare burdened, and I will give you rest"(Matthew 11:28). Our need for strengthand rest are satisfied by Christ. TheChurch commands us to receive weeklywhat is, in fact, essential for ourspiritual well-being.
