INTRODUCTION

• Aluminium is third abundant element in earths crust .

• Aluminium was isolated by friedrich wholer in 1827.

ALUMINIUM GRAPHITE

•Aluminium is a relatively soft, durable,

lightweight, ductile and malleable metal .

•Corrosion resistance is excellent

•It is one form of carbon and abundant in

nature.

•It has an excellent abrasive resistance

(solid lubricant)

Page 3: 0 th Review

LIMITATIONS OF PURE ALUMINIUM

• Poor strength ,

• Low melting point ,

• Poor machineability.

SOLUTION FOR SUITING ALUMINIUM FOR ENGINEERING APPLICATIONS

Reinforcement of Aluminium

It is the process of intensifying the aluminium usually by influence of other metals.

e.x : Aluminium metal matrix composites, Al6061, LM 26 Al,

Some reinforcing materials

• Silicon carbide,

• Graphite ,

• Boron carbide ,

• Magnesium ,

RESULTS

• Dispersion of graphite particles is uniform in FSP,good wear resistance.

• Aluminium graphite composites posses good hardness.

• Aluminium graphite composites posses excellent wear resistance.

• Good enhancement of mechanical properties.

• Posses excellent microhardness.

PREDICTION FROM REVIEW

• Graphite act as solid lubricant.

• Aluminium graphite composite posses excellent wear resistance.

• FSP improves micro properties of aluminium graphite composite.

• This composite find wide application in engineering such as bearings, pistons, air

craft fuselage, so on…..

OBJECTIVES

In this paper we are keen in fabricating aluminium

graphite composite using friction stir processing and we also examine its

microhardness and wear behaviour via brinell hardness test ,scanning electron

microscope (SEM) & pin on disk apparatus respectively .

Page 8: 0 th Review

ADVANTAGES

• Excellent wear resistance

• Improved Hardness

• Suitable for automobiles, bearings, pistons & air craft parts.

FRICTION STIR PROCESSING

A nonconsumable rotating tool with a specially designed

pin and shoulder is inserted into the abutting edges of plates, to be joined and then

traversed along the line of joint friction generates heat to joint .

Invention - The welding institute (TWI) in 1991 at U.K.

METHODOLOGY

• Preparation of material - Friction Stir Processing (FSP)

• Material testing

Microstructure - Orientation Imaging Microscopy

Hardness test - Vickers hardness apparatus

Wear Test - Pin on disk apparatus

• Analysis
