No, we are not thinking about holidays. Oneof the effects of
events in the past decade isthat, for many of us, the barrier
betweenworking time and leisure time has blurredout. A conquest?
From a certain point ofview, a defeat: you can hardly manage
yourtime to enjoy different colors and perfumes…
A large number of individuals have made aclear choice, a sort of
“constant surveillance”,they are “always on” to react promptly in
aworld that presents a new or different situationevery day.
You cannot take the plug off for four weekslike it used to be,
or at least, it’s more andmore difficult to do so: there are plenty
ofmarkets, many more contacts, and if youhave an important role,
you have duties andresponsibilities, so it’s not easy to
“unplug”.
So, let’s stay awake, but ready to enjoy theflavor of a
different period, a softer breakthat brings us closer to friends
and families, the pleasure of taking your eyes away fromthe watch
and the mailbox…
In these pages you will find a few interestinglines to
read.Well, we don’t expect you to bring our ma-gazine under a beach
umbrella or take it outof your backpack in some art city or
mountainhut, but you might be curious about thingshappening in this
crazy industry.
Needless to say, we like to offer a magazinefor reading, with
rich contents. We foundplenty of contents and suggestions in
recentweeks, and you will find our own point ofview in these pages.
It’s not a “summer is-sue”: it’s not full of drawings to color or
cros-swords, it’s packed with information, thoughts,suggestions,
meetings, interviews, technicalspecifications.
So, enjoy your reading and have nice holidays, whatever that
means for you…
P.s.: by the way, if you feel more comfortable, you can use your
mobile devices and takea look at xylon.it, it’s all new!

NEWS
COMPANIESSalvador: “You wood like it”!
The new slogan of the Italian company spe-cialized in the design
and production of "in-telligent optimisers", has been
presentedduring the last Ligna. An edition most
certainlysuccessful…"We've hit the bull's-eye! Notonly by having
our visitors play the game ofdarts available in our booth: it has
been agreat Ligna edition, which has allowed usto meet many
long-standing customers, butabove all, it has generated the
interest ofnew companies that have decided to movecloser to the
technologies Salvador, as theresult of the hard work spent on
defining astronger sales network". With these wordsChristian
Salvador has summed up the at-mosphere of the five days spent in
Hannover, made of business, of course, but most im-
portantly, of the desire to always put people inthe foreground,
a "vocation" which has always di-stinguished the Italian company.
Ligna has beenthe perfect occasion to launch the new marketingtools
of the Italian company: a new slogan "Sal-vador, you wood like it”
along with the firstissue of the magazine that tells some of the
manyworldwide Salvador optimisers stories of success.Excellent
hospitality for the machineries exhibited:from "Superangle 600 ALL
IN-1", which has al-ready won numerous awards due to the
benefitsoffered by having joined the possibility of angularcutting
to drilling operations, and made evenmore powerful and flexible
through the software"Salvawood", to "Supercut 500" in the
"Superfast" version able to perform a full cutting cyclein few
hundredths of second. A lot of attentionhas focused on "Superpush
200" in the "Window"version and for an even more powerful and
fastversion of "Superpush 250". ■
COMPANIESExcellent debut for Giardina Group
“We are very satisfied with our debut as GiardinaGroup: we
showed up at Ligna with a new logothat will be progressively
extended to our entireportfolio and with a new image, but most of
allwith our expertise in technology development -from conventional
to advanced solutions - thathas been really appreciated”, said
GiampieroMauri, the entrepreneur who, for a few weeksnow, has been
guiding the new organization thathas united a few historical
successful brands ofthe finishing industry, including Giardina
Finishing,Mauri Macchine, Ventilazione Italiana and MMStore.
“Ultimately, Ligna has given the feedbackwe expected”, Mauri added.
“We built our par-ticipation around our new identity, a huge
standcovering over 400 square meters dedicated tomeetings and
discussion with partners and cus-tomers....The feedback we had was
overall pos-itive, suggesting that the 20 million euro
revenuetarget might be achieved sooner than expect-ed…”. “Very
interesting visits, solid contacts, focused on planned investments”,
said StefanoTibè, sales manager. “Unlike the previous edition, this
year we could really feel the necessity ofbusiness owners to
renovate their plants. Wemet a few historical customers from the
UnitedStates, Canada, Turkey, Asian countries, theMiddle East, who
came to discuss projects tobe finalized shortly; and we also met
manypeople for the first time, coming from marketsthat were quite
“far” from our business in pastyears. This is a signal of a new
season for thewood and furniture industry, as well as an indexof
increasing confidence in the new age of Gia-rdina Group...” ■

DREMA 2017: SEE YOU IN POZNAN!
FOCUS on Poland
Drema, the exhibition dedicated to woodworkingtechnology,
accessories and semifinished materialsfor the furniture industry,
is an established date inthe European trade fair scenario. Among
all exhibitions in Eastern Europe, Russiaapart, it has been
recording constant growthrates in recent years, in terms of
exhibitors, visitorsand area. These are the key parameters that
ensure thesuccess of an exhibition and, at the same time, indicate
the health of local supply chains.
The 2017 edition will take place in Poznan from12 to 15
September at the Poznan InternationalFair; preliminary figures
communicated by the or-ganizers can be considered reliable;
approximately, the exhibition surface should reach 23,000
squaremeters with 500 exhibitors, and 23,000 visitorsare
expected.
All figures are higher than in 2016. The major wo-odworking
machinery importers will attend, asthe Polish market can fully
absorb the offer of te-chnology in all price ranges, thanks to a
hugenumber of companies committed to wood pro-cessing, from
handicraft businesses to big enter-prises.
ECONOMIC NOTEAmong the countries of the former Communistbloc,
Poland has been able to achieve the bestintegration into Western
economy, leveraging anindustrial organization that, even before
joiningthe European Union, already boasted advancedmanufacturing
standards. In recent years, the country has grown and deve-loped at
constant rates; living standards have im-proved accordingly, with
economic performancebetter than many European Union countries;
all
key indicators point to a very positive situation.Just think
that, in the past three years, Gdp hasgrown by an average 3.6
percent.Such positive context will benefit the wood industryin
Poland, supported by a progressive expansionof finished product
demand. The local furniture industry, now totally private, has
invested massively in recent years in new te-chnology from Western
suppliers, resulting intoan improvement of the quality standards of
finishedproducts. Almost all brands producing and
sellingwoodworking technology on the local market, from traditional
equipment to sophisticated solu-tions, are foreign actors relying
on a network ofaggressive and well-organized local resellers.Italy
and Germany are the top competitors in thewoodworking machinery
business in Poland: ap-proximately 85 percent of imported machines
aremade in Italy or Germany.
In 2016, Italian companies achieved 84 millioneuro sales.
According to estimates, in 2015 localfurniture production amounted
to 8 billion euroapproximately, with a 70 percent export sharethat
place Poland at number four in the globalranking of exporting
countries, after China, Ger-many and Italy. Recent statistics show
that Poland has achievedthe sixth place in the world and the third
place inEurope in terms of production value. The industryis
comprised of some 24,000 companies. Among these, one hundred are
big companieswith more than 250 employees; 350 are me-dium-sized
enterprises and about 1,550 are smallbusinesses. The rest are
handicraft workshops.

COSTA LEVIGATRICI: KEEP GOING!Selling directly at first andthen
also through TeknikaS.A., Costa Levigatrici hasbeen operating in
Polandfor over three decades. “Theprofitable collaboration wehave
established and de-veloped over time with ourlocal agent”, explains
MarioMoretti, area manager forEastern Europe, “has helped us
achieve leader-ship in the Polish market in terms of
installedsanding and calibrating machines”. A very satisfactory
result, with some industries of-fering a bigger contribution than
others, as itoften happens. “Despite market crisis, Polandhas
always maintained good development levels, and recently the wooden
flooring and furnituresegments seem to be improving further, alsoas
a result of several factories related to IkeaGroup, both direct
subsidiaries and contractors”.But there’s more...“We have seen the
rise ofmany medium and large industrial companiesspecializing in
furniture and flooring production, and we have succeeded in
establishing activecollaboration with them, focusing on
productionand quality. Such collaboration is the key driverof our
growth on the Polish market, which iscommitted to meeting
ever-growing domesticdemand, as well as successfully turning to
ex-port”. So, the market is really lively, accordingto Mario
Moretti, and this is particularly visible atDrema. “The exhibition
in Poznan has alwaysbeen a reference for us, that’s why we have
al-ways attended in the past twenty years. Onceagain, our machines
can be found at the Teknika
booth”. Collaboration with the Polish agent is notlimited to
Drema: a universal model by Costa Le-vigatrici for test runs is
also exhibited in Teknika’spermanent showroom. “With a machine in
Warsawavailable for customers, we can respond fasterto specific
requests by local producers andconsequently expand our footprint in
Poland”.Forecasts for the future? “We believe that thegrowth of our
industry in Poland will continuefor a long time, both because local
producershave not saturated domestic demand, yet, andbecause they
are addressing foreign marketswith a highly competitive
approach”.

ITALIAN EXPORT OF WOODWORKING MACHINERYAcimall, the Italian
association of woodworkingmachinery and tools manufacturers, looks
backto a year 2016 that was quite satisfactory on theexport side.
Approximately 75 percent of rev-enues come from abroad, so accurate
trendanalysis is essential to understand where andhow business is
going. The favorite destination ofour products has always been the
EuropeanUnion, and also this year there is no big surprise:729
million euro and 52 percent share are the fi-gures for 2016,
achieving 8 percent growth fromthe previous year. The mature
markets of Franceand Germany were stable, exceeding 90 millioneuro
each, and also purchase from Belgium re-mained at high levels.
Poland maintained a fastgrowing trend. Looking at other countries,
Spaindeserves special mention. The Spanish marketsuffered the most
during the crisis years, losingapproximately 60 percent of its
turnover. In thepast two years, Italian companies have foundfertile
land again, with 53 million euro machineryexported in 2016. Another
“surprise” in the yearunder scrutiny was the United Kingdom.
DespiteBrexit looming and currency uncertainties for thecoming
years, in 2016 Italian manufacturers soldover 100 million euro
products to the UK. To com-plete the EU review, we consider worth
mentioningthe Balkan region. Croatia and Slovenia are si-gnificant
markets, and if you add Serbia-Monte-negro and Bosnia-Herzegovina,
the total value ofthis area in terms of export reaches 38
millioneuro. Moving outside the European Union, Russiadefinitely
needs some consideration. The Euro-Asian subcontinent was strongly
affected by po-litical tension. 34 million euro, despite 8
percentgrowth, is a poor result compared to pre-crisis le-vels,
which had gone up to 100 million euro.
Among European countries we can include Turkey, which is going
through a turbulent political period, but is maintaining high levels
of industrial activity. In 2016, Italian manufacturers exported over
40million euro equipment. Let’s move on to theAfrican continent.
The share on Italian export is2.8 percent and for sure, Morocco and
Algeriacurrently offer more stability for business. Lookingat North
America, it is worth commenting uponthe US market trend, currently
the top destinationon a global scale with more than 150 million
euro.In the wake of the United States, Canada alsogained twenty
percent points, reaching 24 millioneuro. On the opposite, South
America is expe-riencing its worst phase. Brazil, traditionally
thebiggest destination market in the continent, lostover 70
percent, dropping to an all-time low of11.6 million euro. Let’s go
to the opposite side ofthe world and take a look at Eastern
markets. TheMiddle East acquired 49 million euro equipment, with a
3.5 percent share. The top-two markets inthis region are the United
Arab Emirates andIsrael, with 14.7 and 12.8 million euro
respectively.Moving to the Far East, China is the mostimportant
country by far. This region recordedvery interesting growth rates
in 2016, equal to33.3 percent. Also India recorded a
significantresult. 24 million euro and 40 percent growth
aresignificant figures, but uncertainty still remainsfor 2017.
South-East Asia is still a “land of op-portunity”: Indonesia,
Malaysia, Singapore, Thailandand Vietnam together reached 40
million euroturnover, with a slight increase from 2015. Thefinal
stage of our review is Oceania: in 2016,Italian machinery export
passed the 30 millioneuro threshold, almost twice as much as in
2015.
www.acimall.com
ECONOMY
in recent years we have more than doubled ourturnover and market
footprint, developing anetwork with 18 engineers, 23 salespeople,
5product area managers and 15 employees inaccounting, management,
service and spareparts. The Polish market is a synonym for
pro-fessional skills and qualified staff, the countryhas excellent
professional schools and univer-sities which prepare students for
their workinglife”. Today Scm in Poland is mainly focused on
edge-banding, panel saws and working centers, aswell as traditional
equipment and solid wood pro-cessing, especially for doors and
windows. In recent years, the Polish market is experiencinga real
surge: many companies are growing intogiants that can produce both
for local customersand for export. Which are their current
requirements? “More andmore advanced technologies are adopted
andthere is increasing demand for quick and qual-ified support. As
a result, Scm has invested inits technical and sales staff in
recent years. Wehave more than doubled our staff of engineersand
salespeople, focusing on the quality ofservices and reaction time”.
According to tradition, Scm will be back to Dremawith a
800-square-meter stand, several socialresponsibility initiatives
and a few new products:the edgebanding center “Morbidelli P200”,
thenew range of edgebanding machines including“Stefani XD” with
“Air Fusion”, the boring machines“Morbidelli UX100” and “CX100”,
the MorbidelliCnc nesting unit “N100”, the Gabbiani panel saw,the
Dmc sanding solutions and a wide range ofclassical machines. “Some
of our machines will be up and runningin the "factory", where we
will produce furniturethat will be donated to senior retirement
homes. We did something similar last year; the productionwas
entirely managed by the students of thewood technology department
in the PoznanUniversity, who made several bedroom setsand donated
them to orphanages”.
www.scmgroup.com
“BARDZO DOBRZE” FORSALVADOR“My first trip to Polanddates back to
November2005”, says Christian Sal-vador, managing directorof the
company that bearshis name. “Since then wehave been growing
con-stantly and today this coun-try is a major destination for our
production: 22percent of our revenues come from here".Why Poland?
"As Machiavelli said, 50 percent isVirtue, the other half is
Fortune. But it was alsoa personal challenge, because my father
wasagainst such expansion. I still decided to followmy instinct and
facts proved me right: aftermuch negotiation, we closed a good
agreementwith Teknika S.A, which is now our dealer in thePolish
market”.So things are going well…“Bardzo dobrze (verywell, editor’s
note)! Today we are number one inoptimizing machines, even before
German com-petitors”.How has the Polish market evolved?
“Everythinghas changed in Poland in recent years. Startingfrom
logistics… there we almost no roads before!Up to facilities and
infrastructures. Factories have massively improved their
tech-nology levels: as local labor cost increased, companies
invested in technology and finishedproducts are now more
sophisticated”.Obviously, this trend also had a direct impact
onmachinery manufacturers: "General interest forautomated and
optimized cutting has increasedin Poland, both for the overall
expansion of pro-duction volumes in the country, and for the
type
of wood used in production, which is often verypoor quality.
Another factor, especially in thepast two-three years, has been the
availabilityof labor (even unskilled)”.Poland is the world’s second
producer of couchesand sofas, after China. But also the
furnitureindustry in general seems to work well, as well aspallets
which are recording positive results. Will you be at Drema in Poznan
next September?“Yes, you will find us at the Teknika stand. Wehave
been exhibiting there since 2006 and wewill be back again this year
with “Supercut500”, our fastest machine for high productionvolumes,
and “Superpush 200”, our pusher op-timizing crosscut saw with
electronic selectorfor increased flexibility and precision”.

VISCAT FULGOR:GROWING FOR 25 YEARS"We have been doingbusiness in
Poland since1992 through a distributor,but in 2013 we openedanother
service center”,says Alessandro Catta-neo, co-owner of the re-
nowned manufacturer of tool manufacturing andmaintenance
machines Viscat Fulgor. “It’s agood market for us, and especially
in recenttimes, we have recorded significant annualgrowth rates.
Talking about wood, the key driversare furniture and doors and
windows”. In recent years, the Polish market has changedradically,
with significant year-on-year growthrates. “The biggest challenge
for a machinerymanufacturer working in Poland today is
offeringhigh-tech machines while keeping reasonablecosts. The
industrial landscape in Poland consistsof big companies but also
smaller businesseswhich cannot afford huge investments even ifthey
need high technology”.So are Polish companies ready to invest?
“Defi-nitely, yes, I think they have the strongestpropensity to
invest all over Europe. Poland isfull of small companies willing to
invest and im-prove and their technological culture is high”.Should
the Polish government be praised forthis? “Just partially. It’s
mostly self-propellinggrowth driven by the increasing turnover
ofmany companies year after year. Businessescan switch from smaller
equipment to bigger, more advanced machinery, and they can
planinvestments accurately”.Like every year since 2008, Viscat
Fulgor willexhibit at Drema in Poznan in a dedicated stand.“We have
great expectations. Also this year wewill have an excellent
opportunity to meet ourcustomers and find new prospects. In the
pastfour years we have seen a remarkable flow ofvisitors also from
neighbor countries like Belarus,Ukraine and the Baltic States. We
will bring thelatest products by Viscat Fulgor, including “Fw600 P,
“Bhfe DF”, “Kg 850 DF”, because wehave noticed that the market is
highly receptivein this respect”.

Prati.
Luigi De Vito – born October 1973, married withthree children, a
degree in Economics and Trade,Industrial Management – is the
director of theWood Machinery Division at Scm Group,
afterlongstanding experience in Unilever and Biesse;since September
2016 he has served as VicePresident at Eumabois, the European
federationof national associations of wood technology
com-panies.
Raphael Prati – Corporate Marketing & Comuni-cations
Director at Biesse Group – is an aerospaceengineer. Born 1970, he
is a French-Italian national, married with two children. His
professional career includes jobs at
Decathlon,Augusta/Finmeccanica, Airbus and Scm Group;his current

marketing and integratedcommunication plans as competitive factors.
“Iam very satisfied with the team we have created”,President
Primultini said. “Now Acimall is evenstronger and united, guided by
a board that re-flects an industry where big industrial groupsstand
side-by-side with small and medium en-terprises, typical expression
of the industriallandscape of this and other made-in-Italy
seg-ments. Such collaboration and confrontationhave always been in
strumental in the successof our companies”.
During the assembly – which also approved theAcimall accounts –
President Primultini thanked
the outgoing Vice PresidentFranco Paviotti, not onlyfor his
great contributionto the Board’s activity, butalso for several
decadesof commitment and dedi-cation to the associationand all its

XYLEXPO
A really positive moodis characterizing theinitial stage of
activitiesleading up to the nextXylexpo, the biennialinternational
exhibitionof woodworking te-chnology and furnitureindustry
supplies, to be held in the Fieramilano-Rho fairgrounds from
Tuesday 8 to Saturday12 May 2018. Talks with exhibitors around the
world are showinga clear trend: the 50-year edition – the
firstXylexpo was held in 1968 – will see a furtherconsolidation of
the event. This is the evidence of early bookings, withlarger
exhibition areas compared to the previousedition. The first one was
the German corporationWeinig, which has already secured a much
larger booth thanin 2016.“Our mission is tobuild a new,
sig-nificant edition ofXylexpo”, said ma-nager Dario Cor-
betta. “We want to create a “big exhibition”not only in terms of
square meters, but also forthe quality of visitors we will attract,
for the ef-fectiveness of the exhibition layout, for the
in-teraction we will promote between supply anddemand. It is good
to see that many of thosewho are already finalizing their
registration atXylexpo 2018 are going to expand the sizeand scope
of their participation”.

CASADEI BUSELLATOFrom 15 to 17 June, Casadei Busellato
hostedtheir annual open house event. It was a showcaseof the latest
innovations by the Vicenza-basedcompany, born in 2008 from the
merger of two hi-storical brands in the woodworking
technologylandscape. We were hosted by Massimo Bobba, business unit
manager, who summed up the pur-pose of the event, “…addressed to
global cus-tomers – especially from Africa, Eastern Europe,Cis,
Turkey, Europe and France – but also toItalian companies who want
to have a deeperinsight of our technology. With the
open-houseformula, we can focus on the specific require-ments of
each customer and offer dedicated“demos” presented by our
staff...”. At “TechnoHighlights Thiene 2017” there was a desk
wherecustomers could check and analyze their proposalsand issues in
detail. In the large showroom and inthe factory areas set up for
the event, CasadeiBusellato exhibited plenty of solutions,
althoughthe biggest highlight was definitely the new nu-merical
control machining center for panels andwindows “Jet Master 35”,
featuring a worktable, vacuum cup and clamp positioning system
basedon a floating aggregate supported by a powerspindle. More news
included the new edgebandingmachine with controlled axes “Flexa
47XE”,equipped with a hot-air gluing system “Air JetPackage”; the
popular rounding unit “A2 Super”,installed on the “Flexa 207” and
“Flexa 307” ed-gebanders; and the machining center “Jet OptimaS 20”
for windows. Over two hundred visitorsalso had the opportunity to
see the benefits ofbrushless motors on the “Axo” panel saws, aswell
as the new ledge compensation frame installedon many classical
machines or the optionaldevices available on the “Xenia” squaring
machi-nes. After the welcome speech by MassimoBobba, the day opened
with a greeting by PaoloMarucci, chief financial officer, who
illustratedthe Casadei Busellato’s positive trend and goodresults.
“It’s a positive period: since 2016 wehave been growing
consistently... We havereached a turning point, these are
important
years, with many European markets – as wellas the United States,
the Persian Gulf and theMiddle East – offering new
opportunities…“.“We are very happy with the results of our
openhouse”, Massimo Bobba added. “We came backfrom Ligna with a
very positive balance. Here inThiene, we met operators from
countries thatdo not normally travel to Hannover, and alsothose who
wanted to have a closer look at ourmachines...“We showed our new
solutions withdedicated demos, creating the best context
forcustomers to experience the benefits of ournew machining centers
or the adoption of con-trolled axes in edgebanding, as well as
hot-airedge application. The “customer care” servicewas really
appreciated, with Mirco Bergantinifor Casadei and Pietro Graziani
for Busellatoon stage. We introduced our service staff, sothat
customers and prospects could see theface of the people who are
ready to supportthem every day…”, Bobba added. So, the finalbalance
is largely positive, not only for the Thienedays. This year,
Casadei Busellato will close withrevenues around 18 million
euro“,…a satis-factory result, although there are regions thatare
not keeping the promise for 2017, such asGreat Britain and Turkey”,
Bobba said. “Encour-aging signs are coming from Russia, Spain
andFrance, also thanks to a new organizationcreated in
collaboration with MPI France, a re-seller that manages our
business exclusivelybeyond the Alps. Satisfaction also extends
tothe technology we can offer:..Through constanttechnical
innovation, we have reviewed andupdated many solutions, and next
year we willalso revamp the Busellato range of machiningcenters,
previewing new models at the nextXylexpo in Milan!.” (l.r.)

EXHIBITIONS
We could cut it short in few lines, writing that Interzumhas no
equals. But that wouldn’t be respectful for thenever-ending success
of the biennial exhibition ofsupplies, materials, components and
hardware forthe furniture industry, which deserves some
“cele-brations”…
…so, once again with some fixed and commonplaceexpressions, here
is our report, knowing that you willhardly be surprised by what we
are going to tell you.We will jump the part where we say that,
since the“big” German brands decided to stand togetheraround “their
own” exhibition that was clearly in crisismany years ago, the
situation has turned upsidedown and today Interzum is sailing with
a strong in-ternational wind in the sails. There is no doubt:
anyoneinvolved in the industries represented at this
wonderfulexhibition was here.
There were as many as 1,732 exhibitors, 79 percentof them from
sixty countries, which guaranteed thesuccess of this edition
(consider that in 2015 therewere “only” 1,537, so we had 195 booths
more tovisit!). To be accurate, we can add that German exhi-bitors
were 368 (372 in 2015), while internationalcompanies reached up to
1,364 from 1,165 in 2015,as evidence of an increasing appeal
abroad, althoughthis is a well-known and established event, so this
in-crease was quite surprising, to be honest…There were 69 thousand
visitors, 19 percent morethan in 2015, with a 74 percent share from
152 coun-tries, almost the entire United Nations… In 2015, forour
“accurate readers”, there had been 58 thousandvisitors, 71 percent
from 143 nations.Europe is still the main region of origin, with
significantgrowth rates from the Netherlands (plus 26
percent),Spain (plus 25 percent) and Eastern Europe (plus
46percent). Positive trend also for visitors from Polandand the
United Kingdom, but a real boom wasrecorded from Asia, with visits
up by 53 percentcompared to 2015, from the Middle East (plus
25percent), from Africa (plus 17 percent), from Oceania(31
percent), from North America (26 percent) andfrom India (41
percent). The exhibition surface increase by 15 percent, as
an-nounced in our pre-show articles: 187 thousandsquare meters,
versus 163 thousand in the previousedition.
Before such figures and positive trends also in termsof
percentages, there is nothing to add. So, all wehave to do is give
to Caesar what is Caesar’s, just likeKatharina Hamma, Koelnmesse
Ceo, did: “Thisyear we offered a unique event to our
industry, setting new records in terms of exhibitors, visitorsand
square meters, and most of all for the varietyand quality of
exhibited products”.
We fully acknowledge this analysis. We must admitthat we have
been attending the event on the Rhinefor many years, but this year
more than ever, we hadthe feeling that everything was exactly as we
had ex-pected. (l.r.)

VAUTH SAGELA “MAXXIMUM” OF INNOVATIVENESS
JOWAT“SERVICE UNITES”!
Vauth-Sagel has completely reinventeditself and launched its new
logo, imageand brand strategy at the interzum 2017:"Vauth-Sagel
creates system solutionsfor all living spaces. And for
everyone."The new corner unit system “CornerstoneMaxx” is one of
the company's producthighlights. The innovative system bringsthe
contents of two tray-like shelves com-pletely in front of the unit.
The often badlyor even completely unused space in thecorner unit is
therefore made usable in acomfortable way. “Cornerstone Maxx”does
not obstruct the adjacent units as itswings out as the shelves come
to restfully in front of their own unit. The softopen and soft
close interior fittings featurean automatic mechanism that
supportsthe movement sequence when they arepulled out and pushed
in. Thanks to itsgraceful design, the fixing system isalmost
invisible yet achieves a load bea-
ring capacity of up to 25 kilograms per shelf. The shelves
themselves are of a modern lineardesign and, in contrast to the
competitor pro-ducts on the market, they make do without
un-necessary and annoying indentations; the sto-rage space is
therefore utilised to the “Maxx”as they can be used to their full
extent. The sy-stem consists of only three parts and makesdo with
just one mounting point – a singlefixing pole ensures a “MAXXimum”
of stabilityand makes the height easy to adjust even afterit has
been fitted. Vauth-Sagel also achievesall of this with less screws
and less drilling –which not only saves time but also
valuablestorage space.

This year’s trade fair motto of Jowat highlightsthe benefits
from a complete service for innovativesolutions for adhesive
processors. Close customersupport, technical advisory service and
qualitycontrol, as well as the transfer of know-how. Jowatpresented
at interzum powerful Pur hot meltsfrom the “Jowatherm-Reaktant®”
product groupfor superior bonding results. The reactive hotmelts
are characterised by higher yield comparedto other systems and
better adhesion on the dif-ferent substrates used in the assembly
of foammattresses with an increasing number of layers.Innovative
primers developed by Jowat ensurean optimum adhesion of adhesives
on materialswhich are difficult to bond and require a
surfacetreatment. The Pur hot melt “Jowatherm Reaktant®608.00”
meets the highest standards with regardto a superior appearance of
the bondline due tosubstantially reduced application amounts andthe
transparent adhesive film. In addition, theadhesive is also
characterised by a wide rangeof adhesion, excellent thermal
stability and highgreen strength.

TECHNOLOGY BUSINESSSATISFIED WITH LIGNA
EXHIBITIONS TECHNOLOGY
Five days packed with meeting, dates, presen-tations, in-depth
analysis, and most of all, visitsto many stand to see thousands of
machines ondisplay. The Ligna 2017 diaries might end withthis
statement: an event that has made everyonesatisfied, with the “big
brands” located in theirown “buffer zones”, each surrounded by
their“court”. But also the non-starring actors, the tier-two
companies (not because of their quality)that make up the backbone
of the wood and fur-niture technology industry had their own
space, their own visibility. The decision to change theexhibition
layout, eliminating the classical divisionbetween “industry” and
“handicraft” (actuallyoutdated…) had a good rationale, although
wedon’t believe these are the real factors for thesuccess of an
exhibition. It’s rather about contents, quantity and quality of
exhibitors and visitorsthat matter, and nothing was missing in
Hannover. In this industry, it is not so easy to invent, weknow
that, but manufacturers have a strongfocus on the levels of
performance and “integra-tion” of their machines. The
standardization ofproduction operations, whether you like it or
not,is spreading out massively; you might as wellget the most
benefits, select machines that caninteract and execute all
necessary operationswithout the contribution of human beings. This
isthe meaning of the big 4.0 debate: it’s not abouttechnologies
talking to each other but technologiesthat don’t talk with anybody
else: once they havereceived operating instructions and once
theyknow where materials should be picked, they’lldo the job!
Having said this, the exhibition hasbeen clearly successful,
reaffirming its role ofmajor event for this huge and diversified
universe:
1,500 exhibitors, 900 of them from abroad, filledup 129 thousand
square meters of net exhibitionarea, with booths of much higher
quality comparedto the past. As usual, plenty of visitors,
therewere 93 thousand, 42 thousand coming to Ger-many from over 100
countries. According to thefigures given by organizers, visitor
flows have in-creased from all regions, especially Asia,
NorthAmerica and Europe. Among the top-ten countriesof origin,
France came first, followed by Austria, the USA, Sweden, Belgium,
Spain, China andPoland. Italy was “just” at number nine (thinkabout
it, people) and Russia at number ten.Let’s close with a statement
by Luigi De Vito –Acimall and Eumabois Vice President, and
directorof the Wood Machinery Division at Scm Group –who attended
the closing press conference ofLigna 2017. “We are very satisfied
with this editionand we signed many contracts in these days”,he
commented. “We achieved our targets in avery positive atmosphere:
in the first three months,we have recorded a 20 percent increase
inorders, and we expect this trend to grow furtherafter the
exhibition”. De Vito said this will be anedition “to remember”, as
it confirms the strongrally of the industry. And he added: “We
havestarted a virtuous circle driven by innovation ca-pacity on one
side and by strong attention tocustomer and market needs on the
other”, andconcluded: “…Ligna has reaffirmed the highstandards
achieved by the woodworking industryand its technologies, which are
now at the samelevel as any other industry: wood is no longer
thepoorer cousin”. Quite clear, we would say…
(l.r.)www.ligna.de
Matteo Simonetta, technical office managerat Acimall − the
Confindustria member asso-ciation that represents Italian wood
technologymanufacturers − walked through the halls ofLigna in
Hannover looking for new solutionspresented by wood technology
companies. This is the report of his exploration…
Our industry is mature, therefore innovation isincremental,
consisting of small constant im-provements, and momentous change
does nothappen every year. Nevertheless, I found a fewlittle
interesting things and I present them here.Actually, they are not
so little, as they supportthe work of users on one hand, and they
arebased on ideas, developments, tests and com-mitment typical of
Italian manufacturers. “Industry4.0” has exploded. The topic has
been aroundfor some time, sure, but this year it took muchmore
space, probably also as a result of thefiscal incentives offered by
many Europeangovernments. Especially in the largest booths, that
concept was in the forefront; each groupdeclined it in a different
way, and maybe namedit with a registered trademark: for Homag
it’s“tapio”, for Scm “Lean Cell 4.0”, for Weinig-Holz-Her “W 4.0
digital”, for Biesse just “Industria4.0”. Also small and medium
businesses areready to deliver 4.0 plants and “4.0 ready”
ma-chines, though investing less in marketing. Thesecond major
trend, already established andconsolidating year after year, is the
smart man-agement of lines and individual machines for“Batch 1”
production, and total flexibility frombatch 1 to high
volume.Primultini presented a very simple ready-to-use program for
log optimization: on a back-ground picture of the log head, the log
sawcontrol monitor displays rectangles representingthe cross
sections of the boards that will be ob-tained. The software,
compared to the previousreleases, not only suggests a cutting
programthat can be accepted or rejected, but alsoallows the
operator to adjust and improve thecutting scheme, based on the log
defects visiblein the picture: with few intuitive
click-and-dragoperations, you can move and rearrange boardsinside
the log, as well as adjust their thicknessand width. Italpresse
introduced a robot thatindependently makes up parquet stacks to
bepressed to glue three or more layers for eachboard. The press
automatically adjusts the pres-sure of each cylinder, according to
the informationacquired by photocells at the infeed, so as
tolaminate cut-to-size panels loaded at random, without having to
make up a uniform surface orwait for more pieces.. Company Paul
exhibitedan automatic Hsk locking system for the bladeshaft with
faster changing cycle, significantlyreducing setup time. Leitz, in
collaboration withHomag, has developed a grooving blade withdynamic
regulation and real-time width adjust-ment without stopping
production: the systemconsists of two blades paired by means of
asystem that can adjust their relative distance.Leitz also launched
the new “ProfilCut Q Dia-mond”, featuring simplified knife change,
cuttingedges that can be re-sharpened up to fivetimes, 20x longer
tool life compared to inter-changeable carbide knives, lower weight
thanksto the aluminum body, and cutting speed up to120 m/s. Leuco
showed the new tool concept“Airface”, designed with a focus on the
owl-wing-shaped technical surface, without cuttingedge support
(nose) on the body, which reducesnoise by up to 2 decibels. Big
brands alwayspresent plenty of new solutions, but many ofthese are
just new models or enhancements toportions of process, and it’s not
worth reportingall of them. Homag impressed me with “Module45”, a
patented tilted blade unit (with variableangle) mounted on the left
side of the horizontalpanel saw (an area that is not used normally)
toexecute edge cutting at 0° to 46° angle, withhigh accuracy and
greater safety and ergonom-
ics than a squaring machine. It avoids damagingthe workpiece
while it’s being transferred to asquaring machine for inclined
cutting. At Ima-Schelling, they showed me the first result ofthe
merger in terms of technology: “Profil.cut1”combines the horizontal
panel saw by Schellingwith an inline Ima routing machine
downstream, whereby the former cuts raw panels into stripesand the
latter immediately executes cross cutswith routing bits, achieving
cycle time optimizationlevels ideal for small batches.Weinig, among
several new products, exhibitedthe “PPL B” press that can glue
solid woodboards to make up a bar up to 160 mm height(instead of 60
mm currently achievable), usefulfor window production. The solution
featuresautomatic pressure adjustment, up to very highvalues to
guarantee the best gluing quality.Weinig also presented
“Variostroke”, a newblade lifting technology that minimizes
noiseand improves cutting quality. Another historicalbrand of the
group, Holz-her, exhibited thethree-axis nesting center “NexTec
7707”, fea-turing innovative software installed on the ma-chining
center that, starting from the furnitureelement 3D model,
automatically creates thenesting and cutting program. Scm has
patented“He-Pod, “the third dimension of the worktable”:a system of
“pop-up” vacuum cups that lift thepiece as soon as it has been cut
according tothe nesting scheme, allowing to complete alloperations,
even below and around the edge, including edgebanding, without
removing thesurrounding parts. Altendorf introduced “Magis”,an
application that can be installed on a tabletconnected to the
squaring machine control toguide the operator visually, performing
thecutting sequence step-by-step and showingthe next operation to
be executed and the nextpiece to be processed. Kuper presented
“FLI1000”, a splicing machine for veneer from 0.25to 5.0 mm
thickness, featuring horizontal-mountglue disk, accurate glue
dispensing with nosmear, maintenance-free and lubricated for life.I
asked Nicola Fantozzi of Makor for moredetails about a device I
found interesting, alsobecause it’s a patent: the paint recycling
andbelt cleaning system of the “Performer” sprayingmachine feature
hard metal (Widia) scrapers, really indestructible unlike
conventional rubberscrapers, mounted on shock absorbers to
avoiddamaging the belt. This systems saves a lot ofmaterial,
whether it’s water or solvent, consuming20 liters per working shift
instead of 50-60 withconventional systems. Valter Lanzoni at
Ceflashowed me the new vertical oven “Omnidry”, apatented system
that can automatically adjustthe loading height between the trays
accordingto the pieces coming in from the spraying robot, based on
real-time information provided by therobot itself.. A good example
of an “intelligent”machine that supports another machine
installeddownstream along the same line. GiampieroMauri has
recently defined a new organizationfor Giardina Group and, at
Ligna, presented aline with a paint drying system that
combinesmicrowave “Mos” (patented) with Uv technology.Buerkle
exhibited two new solutions: a rotaryspraying machine where paint
is fed into therotor at 3-4 bar pressure, then the
compressorintegrated into the rotor increases pressure upto 60-80
bar. This dramatically reduces repaircosts… and the spraying
machine is equippedwith air conditioning. Superfici-Elmag
presented“Led-up”, a led system for cold lacquer dryingwith
different Uv wavelengths, offering energysaving and preventing
yellowing. Tonelli exhibiteda through-feed polishing machine for
narrowsurfaces (edges), offering width adjustment andthe
possibility to create filleted profiles. The next world apointment
with industry inno-vations will be at Xylexpo, to be held at
Fierami-lano-Rho from 8 to 12 May 2018.

SCENARIOS
INNOVATION IS AT HOME IN CEFLAExcellent results for Cefla, which
closed the 2016 ba-lance sheet with a new re-cord in the long story
of the“cooperative group”. Tur-nover amounted to 468 mil-lion with
5.5 percent increa-se, as mentioned in thecontents, plus over 200
newemployees in the past threeyears (today, the staff of the
Finishing, MedicalEquipment, Shopfitting and Plant Solutions
exceeds1,900), with net profits close to 17.5 million euro,up by
9.4 percent from the previous year. So, the2015 record has been
exceeded and the growthtrend of the past five years maintained,
withexport consistently around 70 percent of produc-tion. “We are
proud to present a record balancesheet in the 85th anniversary of
our foundation, being aware that, starting from tomorrow, we
willhave to meet the tough challenge of keepingand improving the
current performance”, saidCefla president Gianmaria Balducci.
“Cefla is acompany with an important history behind and adynamic
and future-oriented approach ahead, driven by strong commitment to
innovation and avirtuous attitude to share know-how and
researchacross all business units”. Cefla’s growth hasbeen driven
by Cefla Medical Equipment, andalso the new business unit in the
led industryachieved significant results. On the whole, theglobal
business of industrial activities accountsfor 70 percent of Cefla
Group’s revenues, as evi-dence of the international scope of the
Imola-based cooperative. These results were the topic of one of
severalstories told by Cefla Finishing at the recent Ligna, where
the huge 1,400-square-meter stand wascrowded with machines and
technology, as wellas with visitors, as usual. “This Ligna edition
–said Alberto Maestri, managing director of CeflaFinishing – has
gone beyond expectations, evenbetter than the previous one. The
growth trend isconsistent with the positive market climate,
withserious and competent customers. The exhibitionhas generated
significant contacts also with Asianmarkets, ready to invest to
improve their productionoperations through innovation”.Great
interest was aroused by “J-Print 3D”, abrand new “invention” of the
group engineersthat allows to decorate panels with 3D
effectssynchronized with digital printing. It was the worldpremiere
of a process called “My texture”, resultingfrom the combination of
two digital machines: adigital printer “designs” the surface and
then aclear layer is applied, glossy or matte, onto which
another printer appliesa special corrosive inkthat partially
removesthe upper layer, gene-rating an amazing 3Deffect. The
system, com-prised of two printersby Jet-Set, a companyrecently
acquired by thegroup, can handle very
different products, from cabinet doors to flooring, according to
the features of the selected paints. Many visitors focused their
attention onto thenew range of “Omnidry” ovens, offering
highproductivity and great flexibility and the capacityto handle
flat and curved panels of differentthickness, thanks to the
possibility to automati-cally adjust the distance between trays.
Another highlight was the articulated robot“iGiottoApp X2”,
launched and awarded atthe latest Xylexpo, equipped with two
“arms”that can work in synch or independently, con-trolled by
specific anti-collision software. Butthe application that drew most
attention wasdefinitely the virtual reality experience offeredto
all visitors. Wearing a pair of goggles, eve-ryone could be
projected into a real factory, in-teracting with all the equipment
and devicesaround. “This is a very advanced and powerfulapproach to
share a plant project with a cus-tomer and simulate each and every
detail, tosuch an extent that you can virtually “use” theplant as
if it was real”. This is the mission ac-cording to Roberto
Bolognini, sales managerat Cefla Finishing, who guided us on a tour
ofthe stand. “The progress of this technology, integrated with our
experience and skills, enable us to literally “experience” a plant,
nomatter how complex. Full integration with allour systems, line
supervisory software andsingle machines allow the wearers of

FINISHING
BIESSE IS ENTIRELY “4.0”!Recent decisions and the Hannover
experienceprove that Biesse has adopted “Industry 4.0” asthe most
important tool for the current successfulseason.“The 2017 edition
of the Ligna trade show inHanover was a special time for Biesse.
Thegreat number of visitors from all over the worldwho came to the
over 5,000 square meter standand the positive feedback received
from cus-tomers, partners and the press were a significantand
gratifying response. They are the fruit ofthe company's investments
toward providingincreasingly efficient services, offering
innovativeproducts and strengthening its presence inmarkets
throughout the world.”. This is the opening of the press release
distributedby Biesse a few days after the Hannover expe-rience. To
be honest, there were few doubts, be-cause the Ligna days clearly
showed that thegroup from Pesaro is going through a very
positive
period: one of the largest booths at the event, plenty of
machines for those who were lookingeven for special solutions, the
right accent on te-chnology 4.0, over 300 specialists ready to
informcustomers and prospects about solutions pre-sented from
Pesaro to the world.“We were particularly proud of the
innovationsBiesse presented at this edition”, stated
FedericoBroccoli, Division Director Wood/Sales & BranchDivision
Director, who repeated a concept hehad already expressed in
Hannover: “The layoutof our stand was entirely based on the 4.0
con-cept, with interconnected technologies thatoffer customers the
significant benefit of reducingproduction times and creating
efficiency. Welike to refer to these solutions as IoB-Internetof
Biesse”. According to the group’s pressoffice, over the 5-day trade
show 4,500 visitorsfrom all around the world visited the
Biessestand. The event was really business-focused,
generating 45 million euros worth of incomingorders, a
significant share of Biesse’s 620 millionannual revenues. More than
40 solutions wereexhibited and operating, selected to
illustrateBiesse’s capacity to meet all requirements fromsmall and
medium businesses to retail giants.Machines for wood, but also for
composites, pla-stics and metals. Service has developed indepth and
in multiple directions. This concept iswinning over and arousing
the curiosity of manymore operators and engineers than we
expected, and we found clear evidence at Ligna, withmassive visitor
flows in the area where Biessepresented the digital project
“MKC-Machine Kno-wledge Center” and the “Parts” portal,
offeringcustomers the opportunity to get more value frommachinery
via a direct connection to the vendorcompany and its professional
skills and resources. Much attention – and it could not be
otherwisefollowing the recent acquisition of Uniteam –was paid to
the debut of wood construction te-chnology at Ligna, and in general
to the entire“Housing”, turnkey machines and lines for
theproduction of doors and windows. We appreciated the decision to
create and launch“Biesse Collection”, a line of branded clothingand
merchandising that surprised many (includingus), but after initial
perplexity has turned out tobe an initiative that deserves proper
attention. What we liked most is that the launch at Lignawas
associated to a charity initiative, supporting
Fondazione Francesca Rava NPH Italia for thereconstruction of a
school in Cascia; then, ofcourse, it’s a matter of “brand
awareness”…
“Biesse is the company with the biggest capitalstock in the
industry – Broccoli said – an achieve-ment that resulted from the
hard work of oursales, marketing and production departments. At this
Ligna we are presenting many innovativeproducts, reaffirming our
focus on Industry 4.0,as witnessed by the recent acquisition of
oursupplier Avant, specializing in machinery inte-gration and
supervisory systems, now a pillarof our production process design
and controlexpertise”.
SOME ECONOMIC FIGURESSo, full wind in the sails of the group
that came toLigna with a remarkable result in the January-March
2017 quarter: 37.3 percent increase inconsolidated turnover, over
14 percent rise inorders received and as much as 199.4
percentincrease in net income (9.4 million euro). Wood is still
predominant (71 percent of Biesse’sbusiness), with glass/stone up
to 15.5 percentand mechatronics at 15.9. The company’s com-mitment
and response to the market of advancedmaterials is growing, “…in
line with our three-year plan”, they say in Pesaro. So, it’s
worthtaking a look at the regions where Biesse operates, starting
from the fact that the domestic marketaccounts for 14.2 percent of
Biesse turnover.Well, the world expanded by 37.3 percent:
ex-cellent trend in Europe, Italy included, where thegroup
generated 44.7 percent of turnover (42.9in the same period in 2016)
and achieved 43percent growth. Plus 35.5 percent was the result in
Eastern Europe(13.1 percent of Biesse turnover); plus 32.2 inNorth
America (19.4 percent share) and 40.5percent in Asia Pacific (20.1
percent share). (l.r.)

BARBERAN: “INERT COAT SYSTEM”The “Inert Coat” systemfrom
Barberàn, presen-ted at Ligna 2017, wasparticularly noticeabledue
to the high-qualityresults which is able toachieve. This
systemaroused great interestamong the visitors at thebooth in
Hanover. The “Inert Coat” systemis a high-performance process for
finishing panelsapplying a layer of UV varnish which is
immediatelysmoothed and dried. This method also includesan unwound
transparent film which is placed onthe surface after topcoat
application, so that thislayer can be smoothed and dried
afterwards.The result: a surface of exceptional properties,which
really convinces optically as well as me-chanically. An ideal
solution for finishing surfacesin those cases where highest quality
is required.Among the innovations that Barberàn presentedin Hanover
within the High Gloss systems wasalso, in a prominent position, the
new “CompactLine HG”, a laminating machine for finished
panels(varnished or printed) that enhances the impressionor the
varnish by applying a transparent foil, which gives the final
product greater abrasion
and scratches resi-stance. This new hotmelt glue
laminatingmachine also applydirectly high gloss foil.In profile
wrappingarea, undoubtedly, themost popular systemof this Ligna
editionwas the automaticwrapping and postfor-
ming machinery for edges such as the “J-shaped”integrated
handle, rounded or angled edges of30º or 45º. Even working with
high grammage rollmaterial or High Gloss foil. And coinciding with
the 10th Anniversary of thepresentation in Ligna of the first
Barberàn singlepass digital printer, the company showed a com-plete
line of printing and finishing for wood with aprint width of 1,260
mm, with full digital applicationwith ten printing groups. The
“Jetmaster” line aroused great interest andhighlighted the
innovation capacity of the Spanishmanufacturer that already has
more than 30 linesof printing single pass installed around the

FINITURE: NEW SYSTEM FOR HORIZONTAL SPRAYING
NEW WINTERSTEIGER THIN-CUTTING BAND SAW
Finiture presented a new product for its paintingsystem at the
22th edition of Ligna in Hannover., ,as well. In order to further
expand its systemmade by bi-rail, overhead conveyor with Power
&Technology and anthropomorphic “Ras” robot,Finiture added an
automated support for horizontalspraying. This new element was
developed inorder to optimize the spraying phase time: therobot can
paint the pieces horizontally laid on theautomated support while
the pieces verticallyhanging from the bar are transferred in/out of
thespray booth.
This is possible thanks to the “Winpaint” softwareof Finiture,
which enables the robot to spray bothvertically hanging and
horizontally laying pieces.

Wintersteiger AG presents the new "Dsb Sin-glehead NG XM"
thin-cutting band saw. Withthis new product, the thin-cutting
specialist fromUpper Austria has set its sights on flexibility
andefficiency – this band saw can be extended toup to 6 machines
connected in-line. Flexibility and efficiency are the two main
sellingpoints of the new “Dsb Singlehead NG XM”thin-cutting band
saw. The machine was deve-loped with changing customer requirements
fortimber cutting in mind, irrespective of timbersand applications.
The result? The machineexcels at both wet and dry cutting, with a
cuttingwidth of up to 350 mm and a maximum blockheight of 165 mm.
It enables extremely thin la-mellas from 1.3 mm to be produced with
a kerfstarting at 1.1 mm. The robust design and Wintersteiger's
years ofexperience in thin-cutting guarantee maximummachine
availability while making this new ma-chine extremely
efficient.This thin-cutting band saw incorporates a numberof
technical refinements designed to optimize
timber cutting, such as the feed system forrobust block
guidance: driven feed rollers topand bottom guarantee continuous
block feeding, even when faced with irregular workpiece
cha-racteristics. The specially rubberized feed rollers and
theinnovative down pressure system guaranteeoptimum grip as well as
minimum friction forwet or dry material. The high-tech saw control
is another pluspoint. Thanks to the smooth saw blade entrysystem,
the saw makes contact with the woodblock at a reduced speed and
only acceleratesonce it has fully entered the block. This
reducesdeflection, which protects the saw and improvesthe quality
of the lamella. The machine also fea-tures a sensor-controlled saw
blade monitoringsystem. Sensors monitor the saw blade andstop the
saw if it starts to drift. This protects the saw blade and machine,
whilereducing tool costs and waste.

HOMAG: ANOTHERYEAR TO REMEMBERAs usual, Ligna was an opportunity
for HomagGroup to present new solutions in a huge stand. We had
further evidence that Homag is a referencefor the entire industry.
While the gap with compe-titors has narrowed, it is also true that
what wehave seen and heard during the Hannover daysindicates that
the Schopfloch-based group is de-termined to preserve its
leadership. This wasclear from the figures presented during the
pressconference in the early exhibition days, whenPekka Paasivaara,
Homag ceo, gave an im-pressive list of data, starting from the
first quarterof this year, closing with incoming orders at
401million euro, 31 percent more than 306 million inQ1 2016. “It’s
an all-time record”, said Paasivaara, with an order book at 520
million (373 in January-March 2015). Strong expansion also for
sales(296 million from 260, plus 14 percent) and em-ployees, from
5,946 to 6,083. “These figures –Paasivaara said – support our
optimism for2017, together with a number of innovative so-lutions
we have developed and launched atLigna, including “tapio”, our
digital platform forthe wood and furniture industry that
representsa development of Industry 4.0 concepts, a“second stage”
that clearly indicates our deter-mination to be leaders in the
digital future…”.So, an excellent first quarter, following just as
po-sitive results in 2016, when revenues reached1,165 million euro,
up by 10 percent from 1,058in 2015. Then Paasivaara showed a slide
with themain destination markets: last year, 32 percent oforders
came from Central and Southern Europe(31 percent in 2015), 23
percent from Easternand Northern Europe (25 percent in 2015),
23percent from North America (22 percent in 2015),21 percent from
Asia-Pacific and the Middle East(one percent below 2015). “The key
to oursuccess – added the managing director of HomagGroup – is our
role of one-stop supplier offering
advanced experiences in all industry segments. We have
complemented our mission by ex-panding our collaboration network
with Dau insoftware, Serva in logistics and
infrastructures,Leadermac in solid wood processing, Duerr,Barberan
and Makor in surface finishing”. Thefocus of the press conference
and the Lignabooth was “tapio”, Homag’s digital platform forthe
woodworking industry, presented as a sort of“ultimate solution”, a
collection of software anddigital tools to manage the process
across theentire supply chain, interacting with thousandsof
different machines from different vendors, pro-cessing different
materials with different tools. Vi-sitors interested in “tapio”
were really amazed bythe possibility to monitor the operation of
amachine or line via their smartphone, from anylocation around the
world. So, Ligna worked wellalso for the German giant: according to
the groupmanagement, expectations have been largelyexceeded, with
contacts and business dealsabove any previous edition. In the large
five-thousand-square-meter booth, more than fifty“Industry 4.0
ready” machines or solutions werepresented, representing the latest
technologicaldevelopments in the respective application fields, from
software to manage orders in points of saleand send bills of
materials to production, up topackaging lines for finished
furniture, ready tobe shipped back to the store where the
processbegan. All over Ligna, and at the Homag booth, there was
strong attention for software, as that’sthe real challenge for
future production. Over 5,500 visitors were admitted into the
“Inno-vationCenter”, where they could get a preview ofthe most
advanced projects being developed bythe German group. (l.r.)

TECHNOLOGY
“W4.0”, WEINIG’S MOTTO
We know, you are tired of reading about Industry4.0. It looks as
if there is nothing else to say orpursue in this period. Of course,
we know that’strue, and we had further evidence from Weinig, which
has been tuning on this topic for sometime. Since the HolzHer
acquisition several yearsago, meeting Weinig Group has been a
moreand more involving experience, not only for theexpansion of the
product portfolio, but for theclear feeling that, having opened up
the doors topanel processing operations, the solid wood spe-cialist
has completed and expanded its skills, approach and business models.
This was apparentalso at Ligna, where both worlds reached the topof
their expression from every point of view, fromtechnology to booth
size, from overall image tospecific innovations. So, it’s not mere
chancethat the final balance is enthusiastic: during theexhibition
days, orders were closed for over 47million euro in the
four-thousand-square-meterbooth where – under the motto “Think
Weinig” –Weinig’s solid wood portfolio and HolzHer’smultiple panel
solutions were presented side-by-side for the first time. As
mentioned, the spotlightswere mainly cast onto “W4.0”, the name
adoptedby the group for the platform of tools that providethe
“networking” of their technologies; Weinighas been working for a
long time on these skills, but they were presented for the first
time under
this “heading”. It’s a strong, successful and currenttopic,
which clearly had an impact on the exhibitionresults, which closed
with record visitor attendancefrom 90 countries, including 8
percent new “high-level” visitors, that’s how they called them.
“Thefocus is clear: production organized to make thebest of
resources, meaning raw materials andenergy, but most and foremost
lead time, processefficiency and methods, combined with
predictivemaintenance…”, said Gregor Baumbusch, salesand marketing
manager. “Our approach to “In-dustry 4.0” has always been focused
on findingan answer to these two key concepts, which areessential
for the entire wood supply chain, withoutoverlooking an easy access
to our servicesthrough the new Weinig Service App, which is areal
“control panel” to manage our machinesfrom anywhere around the
globe”. Ligna hasalso offered the opportunity to inform the
wood-working community about the positive resultsachieved by Weinig
Group in 2016, with 16 per-cent order increase over the previous
year and atrend that has continued in the first part of thisyear.
At the end of April, orders were recordinganother plus 17 percent,
combined with a 21percent increase in total revenues, compared
tothe first four months of 2016. Excellent balanceand excellent
outlook, allowing the board to allotno less than 30 million euro
investments to sustainthe growth trend. A tribute to the group’s
originalbusiness was clearly visible in the big Lignastand, where
the entire “Powermat” range wasdisplayed at the best of its
capabilities, featuringthe most advanced and performing models,
the“3wD” versions to create textured surface in onepass, and
entry-level solutions in specific versionsfor window manufacturers.

GREAT SUCCESS FOR SCM GROUP SCM AT AWFS IN LAS VEGAS.. “LEAN
ROBOT CELL 4.0” WINS THE “VISIONARY NEW PRODUCT AWARD”
Extraordinary achievement for Scm and theItalian industry at
Awfs Fair, the North Americanexhibition dedicated to woodworking
machinerymanufacturers on the US West Coast, recentlyclosed in Las
Vegas, Nevada. “Lean RobotCell 4.0” conquered the “Visionary New
ProductAward” in the Industry 4.0 category, a newentry in the US
competition. With its Lean RobotCell 4.0, Scm thrilled Las Vegas
with a completelyautomated wardrobe component productionsystem,
served by two anthropomorphic robots, which means that only one,
not necessarilyexpert, operator is required to operate it. The
“Lean Robot Cell 4.0” consists of a “MorbidelliM600” nesting
workcenter, a Stefani edge bander and a drilling center. The cell
uses standard, high performance, easy-to-use machines, operates
automatically when the job is launchedand has been specifically
designed to integrate with the customer's production
managementsystem. The result is a system that can perform all the
various machining stages, from semi-machined panels to machined
panels. At the end of the process, the individual finished
panelsare also grouped by robots on special carriages, ready to be
assembled in the Cpc clamp. The cell can produce up to 500 wardrobe
panels every shift. The “Visionary New ProductAward” confirms yet
again the technological excellence of Scm production and the
capacity ofits Engineering division to design and create truly
innovative systems. The fair awarded ninedifferent prizes for which
33 products were shortlisted as finalists from a total of 27
companies. In the vast area of the group’s Awfs booth (1,200 square
meters equivalent to 12,600 squarefeet), Scm presented the
excellence of its woodworking technology that can satisfy the
needsof any manufacturer, from heavy duty industry to small craft
workshops. There were numerousnew products, including the new
“Mordibelli M 100” and “M 200” machining centers that havebeen
immensely successful worldwide since their release at the beginning
of the year. At thefair there was also a special focus on the
complementary services and products that allowScm customers to
improve their return on investment. In Las Vegas “Smartech” and
“Scm-Connect” were also unveiled, two innovative software programs
that seek to render thegroup’s IT production technology even more
user-friendly. Given the importance of Industry4.0, Scm experts
also attended the seminars on digital innovation in the woodworking
industry.Besides great satisfaction for the important award, Scm
closed the Las Vegas exhibition withlargely positive results in
terms of contacts, deals and orders. Also in the North
Americanmarket, the woodworking industry is going through a
positive period and Awfs has broughtstrong expansion signals.
Scm Group is living a “second youth”: constantdrive to
innovation, significant economic results, more and more effective
technology integration– according to “4.0” principles – using
proprietarysoftware with increasing performance… Much ofthis, or
maybe all of this, was visible at the hugestand that Scm Group set
up at Ligna 2017.And these concepts seem to have been appre-ciated,
as thousands of customers and operatorsvisited the booth in
Hannover.About sixty machines were exhibited, a significantlineup,
which we had already presented in theprevious Xylon International
issues. Plenty of so-lutions, innovation, “Industry 4.0”,
exhaustivelydemonstrated in the “Lean Cell 4.0”, which
wasdefinitely one of the highlights in Hannover, ahigh-automation
line for industrial production, asort of automated factory located
inside an exhi-bition hall. Let’s start from the end, if you
allow,as Luigi De Vito – see the article published onpage 8 –
attended the final press conference ofthe exhibition, discussing a
few topics that willhelp us with our report, as they clearly
illustratethe “Scm vision”. He had anticipated his remarksto the
journalists gathered at the Scm Arena, anarea where engineers,
customers, guests, desi-gners and specialists took turns every day
to talkabout the most significant topics for this seasonof the
woodworking and wood-based materialsindustry.First of all, De Vito
underlined the power, thecommitment, the dedication that the
Rimini-basedgroup wanted to express in this edition of theGerman
show: “At Ligna 2017 we have presentedan unprecedented range of
woodworkingtechnologies, from classical machines forhandicraft
production to automated systemsfor industrial production”, said the
WoodworkingMachinery Division director.De Vito repeatedly stressed
the importance of“Industry 4.0” technological solutions for
thefuture developments of the entire industry, addinga few notes we
appreciated: “Companies areready for this new technological leap,
but theextensive use of robots should not be limitedto cutting
labor costs, but developed to createand train qualified
employment…. Who wouldn’tagree?
Also Andrea Aureli, managing director of ScmGroup, took the
opportunity offered by Ligna tosum up the situation: “What you see
in this hugestand – Aureli said – is the result of
expertiseacquired over sixty years. We have been ableto manage this
season of big changes, obtainingprestigious results from all points
of view: todaythe group is invoicing more than 600 millioneuro,
with 15 percent growth in the past year.We are very happy with this
trend, of course, also because we areachieving this growthwith a
solid financialposition. We will in-vest even more in in-novation.
It’s a goalwe are pursuingleveraging not onlyour knowledge ofmany
processeswhere we are in-
volved together with our customers, but alsoour industrial
organization, where machineryproduction is supported by an
integrated systemthat starts from our steel casting plants andflows
through group companies specializing incomponents, IT solutions and
advanced elec-tronics. This has enabled and will enable us tokeep
making strategic and pondered decisions, which have helped us create
not only excellentmachines for any application, but also big
in-dustrial plants that properly represent “made inItaly” all over
the world”.According to Scm Group figures, compared tothe 2015
edition, orders signed during the ex-hibition increased
exponentially, as well as dealsand contacts. It seems that German
operatorswere really interested in the value proposition ofScm
Group, with the Rimini-based company an-nouncing a 35 percent
increase in domestic visi-tors.
As mentioned before, the “Cella Lean 4.0” wasone of the greatest
attractions, an integratedflexible manufacturing solution that
clearly de-monstrates the concepts of “Industry 4.0” and“mass
customization”. The cell – fully automatedand controlled by the
“Maestro Watch” software– is built around an articulated robot
equippedwith a part recognition camera that “distributes”the
workpieces to different machines (standard),according to the
working cycle. One operatorcan handle everything, from order launch
tofinished products, ready to be loaded and shipped,so from raw
panel to assembled furniture. This is a demonstration of the
engineering skillsof Scm Group, for a long time focused on
simpleand functional solutions that can calculate flowsand lead
time exactly, offering quick and reliablereturn on investment. The
cell can make furniture parts with a capacityof 8/10 sets per
working shift, ensuring highquality and low production costs, very
easy tohandle even for unskilled operators, and capableof
delivering a huge variety of parts: from highvolumes of
ready-to-assemble panels to “batchone”. Let us add that, during
Ligna, the “Lean Cell 4.0”made twenty-five bookcases for the new
schoolsbuilt after the earthquake in Central Italy in thesummer and
fall of 2016. This initiative was carriedout in collaboration with
Fondazione FrancescaRava, a foundation that is re-building schools
inthe earthquake areas. During Ligna 2017, a secondary school and
akindergarten were inaugurated in Norcia. “Withthis project, high
technology is supporting acharity initiative and “Lean Cell 4.0” is
offeringtangible contribution to people who are tryingto restore
their everyday life, especially children
who have sufferedmost and are still suf-fering from tough
post-earthquake conditions”,they said in Hanno-ver...well done!
