Authors' Note

This book, ʔtn 1, xaʔ Stories for Beginners, is based on the text,

ə by Sʕ ʔ Peterson, LaRae Wiley and Christopher Parkin.

The stories in this book have been translated xaʔ (Wenatchee-Columbian Salish) by

transcribed by Christopher Parkin of Salish School of Spokane. The object of this text is to

introduce beginning students to more complex xaʔ vocabulary and sentence structure

while imparting some familiarity with traditional stories of the indigenous people of the

Columbian interior. The stories in this text are simplified versions of the complex and subtle

originals, and they purposefully use a limited and simplified plot and vocabulary in order to

provide access for beginning learners of xaʔ .

The curricular arrangements of these stories including the selection of vocabulary, the

grouping of story elements, creation of exercises, and the gathering and creation of

illustrations are by James Parkin and Christopher Parkin of Salish School of Spokane.

Thanks to the Colville Tribal Council and Salish School of Spokane for supporting this

project.
