Features assignment – essential extras Target Magazine and Audience I am targeting this feature at the magazine NewScientist, a magazine which covers science, technology, culture and more. They produce quality, detailed articles which are aimed at an ABC1 readership who are mostly professionals aged in their 30s, with the average age for readership being 38, suggesting they are a fairly affluent, well-educated and informed audience who will have a keen interest in cultural issues like religion, history and academic theories. This feature will heavily use metaphors and analogies to document its point, which resonates with the intellectual core audience. Furthermore, the readership will expect polysyllabic lexis and jargon to appear regularly in the articles of the NewScientist, so consequently I have incorporated these elements into my writing. The NewScientist magazine is a weekly magazine which suggests that there is also a necessity for current affairs, or features which cover anniversaries of events. My feature complies with these rules - the topic of social media is relevant as it is a constantly changing and evolving platform, while fan culture is also in a state of flux - the metaphorical link to religion is evidence of fan culture's current state. Furthermore, as mentioned in my article, it was Twitter's tenth anniversary in March, which also relates to the topic of current affairs, conforming to the purpose of the content of NewScientist. In terms of imitating the NewScientist's style, I began the article with a reference to the historical context of the topic of my feature, as they did in the article I based mine on. The feature I read also made use of statistics often to manifest its point, so consequently I replicated this, sourcing facts from Twitter, YouGov and the New York Times.
