TEACHER VERSION Earth’s Mineral, Energy & Groundwater Resources Notes

A Natural Resource is an item obtained from the earth

Natural Resources are material that are found in nature and are essential or useful to humans. They help us survive and/or make our lives better

Examples: minerals, fossil fuels, wood from trees, water, food, sunlight, metals, soil….

All natural resources fall into two categories:Renewable and Nonrenewable Resources

Renewable Resources – resource that has the ability to renew itself over a relatively short period of time and can last as lone as the earth

Examples: Plants, animals, water, sunshine, oxygen, carbon dioxide

A NONrenewable resource is a natural resource that has a finite amount (limited amount) and that can NOT be replaced once it is used. The resource was originally formed by the Earth over millions of years, and more can not be made within the lifespan of a human.

Examples: Coal, Petroleum (Oil), natural gas, nuclear fuel, minerals, stone

The video mentioned that the distribution of natural resources around the world is “uneven”.What does “uneven distribution” mean? You wont be able to find them everywhere…

WHY is it natural resources like coal, oils metal ores and soil can only be found in certain locations?

Oil, coal, metal ores and soil were formed because of very specific geological processes. The right minerals needed to be in the right location and have the forces of plate tectonics and/or the rock cycle applied to them over millions/billions of years!

List some items made from Oil: anything plastic, cd’s, printer ink, tires, gasoline, Teflon for pans,

How was Oil Formed? Because ancient plants and animals got buried on

Page 2:  · Web viewAnd you need the right weather to keep the soil moist and more organic matter to keep it fertilized. If this is not in place, then the soil will not grow anything! Soil

the ocean floor then experienced hundreds of millions of years of pressure making sedimentary rock.Oil is a NONrenewable resource!

List a few things Coal is used for:Burned to make electricity, heating houses, making dyes, perfumes, pesticides, etc

How was Coal formed? Similar to oil, buried plants undergo extreme heat and pressure for millions of years. Coal is a sedimentary rock.Coal is a nonrenewable resource

Minerals grow in liquids, forming where molten rocks from beneath the earth’s crust cool and harden.

These metal-containing rocks are called ore. Humans mine the ore/minerals to make metals and other substances.

In order to get deposits of metal ores/minerals there needed to be molten magma! Metal ores will be found in locations of past volcanic and hydrothermal activity located with subduction zones. Minerals and metals are nonrenewable resources!

Soil is formed when rock is broken down by weathering and then mixing with other organic (living) materials on the surface.

Page 3:  · Web viewAnd you need the right weather to keep the soil moist and more organic matter to keep it fertilized. If this is not in place, then the soil will not grow anything! Soil

To make fertile soil, you need the right climate to weather the right type of rock…

Then you need the right type of organic matter and plants to come in and fertilize the soil.

And you need the right weather to keep the soil moist and more organic matter to keep it fertilized. If this is not in place, then the soil will not grow anything! Soil is a non-renewable resource because it does not renew itself at a sufficient rate in the human time frame. It can take hundreds of thousands of years to form from parent rock. If soil is depleted of organic matter, plants can no longer grow, then it is nonrenewable…. Pollution, clearing land and planting the wrong crops can all damage soil.

What is ground water?Water that soaks into the soil from rain or other precipitation and moves down to fill the cracks and other opening in beds of rock and sand. Can only form in certain types of rocks like sedimentary (sandstone or limestone, etc) that is porous (holes for water to move through).

If humans pump out water faster than it can be replaced, then the water will no longer be there. Ground water is considered a nonrenewable resource because most wont be able to refill in the human timeline (if we use it all up too quickly).

We can also make it unusable when we contaminate it!

Renewable Resources – resource that has the ability to renew itself over a relatively ______________________and can last as long as the earth
