What clues have you found that tell you about the boy? What does he like? How does he feel about his garden?

Pretend you are the boy and say what you think about your back garden.

When finished, write down your 3 favourite ideas in sentences.

Remember, it must be in the first person, so use I, me and mine.

Like challenge A, pretend you are the boy and make comparisons between your garden and the rest of the outdoor environment using comparatives.

My car is cleaner than the one parked across the street but my neighbour’s house is newer than mine because it was built later.

Still in character as the boy, imagine a friend has come over.

What might you do together in the garden?

Write a short conversation between them using your speech punctuation.

In your diary entry (Challenge B), write about an argument that you (the boy) might have had with mum using modal verbs.

She said I would not be going to Max’s birthday party but I told her she couldn’t stop me and I would go, even if I had to sneak out!

chose to end the book here? -use mapsTake notes and make lists of everything you find out.Why not draw a picture of the view outside your window now and a version of what it was like before the changes you discovered?

Friday1st May

Choose 3 slides from Jeannie Baker’s The Window and practise putting words to the illustrations.

A new mother cradles her baby as she gazes upon the unkempt wilderness viewed from her window.

A few years pass and as her baby boy has grown, so too has the neighbourhood; trees have been felled, fences constructed and houses built.

The mother also makes changes over the years,

Cartoon strip the view outside your window (3 changes over time) and write descriptive captions to explain what has changed from one to the next.

Write a 3 paragraph comparison of two versions of the view outside your window.

Paragraph 1 – describe the original view.

Paragraph 2 – compare to the view after the changes.

Paragraph 3 – share your opinion of the change. How does it make you feel? What does it make you think?Do others feel the same as you?

As challenge B but consider how the changes outside your window compare to those found in the book The Window.

What are the similarities?

Do both have more nature / less nature?

How do you feel about the changes in the book compared to the changes outside of your own window?

Jeannie Baker makes her windows using found materials – this means whatever she can find. Sometimes these are natural resources (bark, leaves, dirt) but other times it is man-made resources (paper, foil, card).

ART: MY WINDOW – everyone to complete!

Create the scene outside your window using found materials. This can be anything you find inside your home (ask your grown-ups first!) or things you collect from a garden or park while you go out for a walk.

Here is Mrs Breedon’s window and photo for comparison. She used card and paper from her recycling box and tore and cut to size. She didn’t even use glue!

When you have finished, remember to take a photo and upload to your ClassDojo portfolio or email to your class teacher.Eg, [email protected]

THEN CHOOSE AT LEAST TWO OF THE FOLLOWING ACTIVITIES:

Build a 3D model of your window view using whatever you have at home (lego, playdough, blocks, toilet rolls!) Research Jeannie Baker’s book Belonging and make a plan of how you would do the same thing for the school grounds (you could

search for photos of Oaktree and edit them electronically!) Research changes to Oaktree school grounds, or to somewhere close to your home (hint: satellite images show building work!) You

could use Digimaps (username: SN32HA password: souths3435) where you can layer current maps and old maps! Decorate your real-life window with your favourite things (just like the boy in the book) and take a photo Make models of yourself and everyone who lives in your home to arrange in your window – make the models do what you would

normally do outside (play football, have a picnic, climb a tree?) Write a letter of apology from Sam when the window got broken. Draw a picture of the same window from the outside, looking in, at different points in Sam’s life.

Page 11: …  · Web viewMy car is cleaner than the one parked across the street but my neighbour’s house is newer than mine because it was built later. Still in character as the boy, imagine

What are the changes in transport throughout the story? Look at the different vehicles then ask the grown-ups in your family to talk about how travel has changed in their life time.

Take a photo of the view outside your window to compare with your artwork.

Take a photo of the view outside your window to be uploaded to DigiMaps (see above in red) to help build the view of the world for others! Make sure you are careful to select exactly your home!!

PLEASE SEND IMAGES TO YOUR TEACHER SO WE CAN SHARE ON THE SCHOOL WEBSITE

If you have any problems with your work, or you just want to say hi, you can email your teacher on PurpleMash. Just search for 2Email

EXAMPLESMrs Breedon used the contents of her recycling box to start making her window view.
