THE MYTH OF THE FIRST QUIBLA-An Exposition from the Qur’anCompiled By : Shaikh Abdool Aziz

To-date this subject had been addressed through aHadith, Jewish Folklore and biased History, whether positive to Islam or negative. Not many scholars have endeavoured a Qur’anic point of view of the subject with genealogical background. This paper will try and look at the subject from the Qur’an.

1. The first House as Commanded by Allah

In Surah 3, Verse 95/96, it is stated thus:

According to Razi, Bakkah was the name given to Makkah during the period between Ibrahim AS/Ismaeel AS and the advent of the Nabi Muhamad AS, because Makkah was a trade centre and the name Bakkah originated from the word Tabakk-meaning the crowding together of people.

The above Verses lead us to:a) That Muslims should follow the exposition (Deen-Millat) as taught by Ibrahim AS.b) The FIRST HOUSE built under the command of Allah for mankind was in Makkah and that is the Kaaba which was the Quibla of mankind. See Verse reference below.

2. The lie of the Jews Exposed

These Verses clarify:a) Ibrahim AS would be leader of men and not only the Jews and thus Makkah was for mankind. This fact was corrupted by the Jews.b) Ibrahim AS was asked to build this First House for mankind. Refer Verse 126 for the supplication of Ibrahim AS to put this factor to action. It was to be the centre for humanity from the time of Ibrahim AS. Refer my Paper on “Hajj-Arafat, Mina and Manasik of Hajj”-recently circulated.

In Surah 3 Verse 95 the life of the Jews is expressed, “Another objection they raise as to why did Quran make Makkah as the centre (Qibla) instead of Jerusalem (2/142). Tell them that the first House ever selected for the entire mankind was Makkah. It was from this place that humanity was

destined to get the guideline and the fundamental Law which would ensure stability and nourishment for all.”Doubtless, great courage and fortitude is required to uphold a system based on truth and justice, and history bears witness that there have been people who have done so. You are familiar with the life of your illustrious forbear Ibrahim AS who could have inherited the office of the highest religious leader if he had followed in the footsteps of his father. But he disdainfully refused to do so and with absolute determination and steadfastness stood up for the establishment of the System designed by Allah. As a result of this, he had to pass through many grim circumstances. When he had confronted them successfully, he was declared to be worthy of being the Imam of the human race and its model. On receiving such honours, Ibrahim AS asked Allah if his progeny would also inherit them. The answer was that if his progeny deviated from the right path they would be deprived of them.

This system of which the K’aba has been declared as a centre, is the one which Ibrahim AS had established in order to bring all humanity together and bring about universal peace. O Jama’at-ul-Momineen! if you aspire to attain Ibrahim’s AS standing then you must follow his path and emulate his conduct.

We had insisted that (the builders of the K’aba) Ibrahim AS and Ihm’ael should make this place the centre of a Universal system undefiled by man-made beliefs and ideas. This centre was to be reserved for the organisation and training of Momineen who submit to the Laws of Allah and their purpose in life would be to keep a vigil so that humanity is protected from danger, and to resolve its knotty problems. In Verse 120 it is stated that, These Jews and Christians have predetermined that they will not be pleased with you until you (O Rasool) leave your path and follow theirs.Say to them: “The question is not whether mine or yours is the right path. Only that path can be the right one which is shown by Allah’s Revelation which you do not have in its original form but the Qur’an preserves it.” (O Rasool, supposing) if, after having received Allah’s Revelation, you begin to follow the path of these people, you will become like them, and none will be able to save you from the disastrous consequences of following the wrong path.

3. Genealogy Refer Accompanying Table. On studying the Table one sees that Ibrahim AS was the for-father of Solomon (Suleiman AS) and could not have built another centre in competition with what his great-grandfather had built in Makkah.Furthermore, there is no instruction in the Qur’an to Suleiman AS to build another “Temple” or otherwise.Muslims have fallen prey to the lie of the Jews throughout history, and this has led to another myth of Me’raj and the battles between Muslims (Palestinians) and Jews. Muslims should be aware of following aHadith and Folklore without the authority of Qur’an. In addition to the accompanying eMail, one should also ponder over:i) Masjid is not necessarily a fixed building but a place used for prorogation of the concept of “Sajda” or being subservient to the Laws off Allah – No such facility in Jerusalem, but existed in Medina. So the Me’raj was to Medina (The early Verses of Surah 17, but also refer Verse 60 of the same Surah). (Refer my questions via e Mail on the relevant subject)
