Combined fullback Doug Nicol took the field for Southland against JohnDawes' team. Doug contributed Southland's only points - a penalty intheir 25-3 defeat.

***Hard running Combined winger Ian Palmer appears in the 1971 programmein the curtain raiser for South Canterbury under-20, but as a number 8forward. This experience in the forwards shows when Palmer has theboll in hand when his aggressive running makes it very dfficult for anywtiuld-be tackler.
