Nathan Buckley was on the rocks, Collingwood players were on tenterhooks and the footy club was a miserable place to work.

In 2017 the Pies season was over in round 13 and the silence around Nathan Buckley’s future was deafening.

However after an exhaustive review of the entire club he was re-signed for 2 more years.

Just 13 months into his extension Buckley led the Pies into a Grand Final only to lose by a kick.

While Adam Simpson walked away as the most successful coach of the 2018 AFL season, the coach of Collingwood deserves a toast of his own.

How he did it and where he sees the Pies going in the near future will be topics of this enlightening breakfast.

It is the race within a competition. While team success is naturally the main goal of every player, individuals are happy to claim a Sandover or Bernie Naylor medal along the way. The leading goalkicker award has become a tight race in recent seasons as teams kick smaller winning tallies. There has been a band of WAFL sharpshooters who have set the early pace in the run towards the top of the goalkicking list. One of last season’s Bernie Naylor medallists, Andrew Strijk, who tied with West Perth teammate Tyler Keitel on 43 goals, is in the mix. But with South Fremantle’s Ben Saunders, who was the No.1 scorer in three WAFL seasons, retiring from the league, there is a good chance for a new king of the big sticks to be crowned.

Sharpshooters

\\ Tom Lee (C)

MASON SHAW (SOUTH FREMANTLE)25 goals

There was an easy start to the season by Shaw. But he has been the in-form forward over the past five rounds with 20 goals and helped spark South Fremantle’s best form. The 25-year-old’s best haul was six goals against West Coast Eagles in Round 5.

RYAN BORCHET (SUBIACO)18 goals

When your team has only dropped one match for the season there are obviously plenty of opportunities to kick big tallies. But Subiaco share the attacking zone love even if Borchet, 22, has managed to kick a goal in every match in 2019.

RHYS WATERS (SUBIACO)18 goals

Another Lion who has to fight for the forward line limelight. Waters had 11 goals on the board after the first four matches, sparking thoughts of a small forward winning the Bernie Naylor Medal. The 25-year-old was busy in the wet last round with three more goals for the total.

ANDREW STRIJK (WEST PERTH)18 goals

West Perth’s veteran missed a match with injury in Round 3 but returned in a blaze with four goals against Swan Districts. Strijk, 31, has allowed some other Falcons to take more of the goalkicking workload this season but remains one of the most dangerous targets in the league.

MICHAEL BENNELL (PERTH)17 goals

Some WAFL tallies have Bennell at 20 goals when his three-goal haul in the State clash with the SANFL is taken into account. The run has been a bit tougher for the 25-year-old in the past few weeks with a clash on the sidelines and a run in the reserves on a damp day that certainly didn’t favour any league tall key forwards. He’ll be pushing for a senior recall.

BEN SOKOL (SUBIACO)17 goals

The strong marking Lion is another who has State match statistics that interfere with his true WAFL goalkicking tally. Sokol, 23, booted four goals against the Croweaters. He has been restricted to five goals in the past four outings with Subiaco but his ability to be a focal point near goals has set up plenty of scoring chances.

TOM LEE (CLAREMONT)16 goals

The former Adelaide and St Kilda squad member had 13 goals on the board after four matches. Then he missed two games and a wave of WAFL forwards swamped him on the Bernie Naylor Medal board. Lee’s return to the Tigers in Round 8 gave them plenty of potency in the win over West Coast Eagles.

BLAIR BELL (PEEL THUNDER)16 goals

Peel’s blonde midfielder gave a few hints about his goalkicking abilities in 2016 with 23 season goals but in the main Bell has worked hard to set up teammates before the big sticks. His 16 goals have come from six leagues matches and features a five-goal haul against East Fremantle in Round 3.

There was some speculation former Collingwood player Corey Gault might have got another AFL chance via the mid-season draft. That would have been a big loss for Swans which uses Gault’s talents as a ruckman and key forward. He had 19 touches and 18 hit-outs in the narrow loss to Perth in the previous match.

Running hot Kane Mitchell remains a ball magnet at 29. The Sandover medallist dominated the statistics sheet in Claremont’s triumph over West Coast on June 2. Midfielder Mitchell notched 34 disposals, 13 marks and eight tackles in a performance that should earn him the maximum votes in this year’s Sandover count.

Last time they met: R21, 2018 – Swan Districts 13.8 (86) d Claremont 13.13 (91). At Steel Blue Oval. GOALS: C – Manuel 5; T. Lee 2. SD – Noble 4; Notte 3. BEST: C – Manuel, Martinis, Bolton. SD – Noble, Howard, Gault.

Season 2019 has been a bit tougher for Bailey Banfield. The Fremantle squad member played 20 matches in his debut season with the Dockers, yet has been restricted to just three this year. But Banfield continues to show his worth at AFL level with strong effortsfor Peel, including a 25-possession haul in Round 8.

Running hot Former Fremantle onballer Nick Suban hasn’t been as prominent for South Fremantle this season but the veteran continues to play the role desired by his coach Todd Curley. With a raft of off-season player exits from the Bulldogs midfield Suban has become more of an on-field marshal and was crucial in setting up the WA Day win over rivals East Fremantle.

Last time they met: R16, 2018 – Peel 13.12 (90) d South Fremantle 9.12 (66). At Bendigo Bank Stadium. GOALS: PT - Lawler, Dixon 3; Ugle 2. SF – Pickett, Parker 2. BEST: PT - Howlett, Crowden, Lawler. SF – Maskos, N. Strom, Bewick.

During 2019, the Football Budget will again feature a section on WAFL memorabilia and invites you to write or email if you want more information about the football collectables you have tucked away at home.

Collectables

I love looking over old photos from the history of the WAFL. Not only do they depict a time when the WAFL was the only game in town, they also contain great clues for memorabilia hunters. I’ve recently spent a lot of time going over old editions of Westside Football and old photos in an effort to identify items of memorabilia hiding in the background. The exercise has certainly provided a few new discoveries to be added to my wishlist. Take, for instance, the poster featuring caricatures of West Perth stars Brian Foley and Peter Medhurst, which I noticed in the background of a photo from 1960. I’ve never seen one before. Anyone else? I’ve also never seen the great “Tiger Headquarters” captured in a photograph with a group of Claremont players in the 1950s. Does it still exist? Only recently, I featured in this column the vinyl pennants produced by Swan Districts in the early 1960s. I have in my own collection pennants commemorating their 1961 premiership, 1962 premiership, 1963 grand final appearance and 1965 “WA club championship”. But, in a photo, I found a shot of a pennant produced for the 1961 grand final. Perhaps there was one for each grand final they played in, and one for each grand final Swans won? And how about the Bulldog head in the background of another shot? Is that still lying around at the club, or in someone’s shed? I’ve also been fortunate to be able to solve a few mysteries by using this technique. For instance, I was able to date a Bulldogs towel that I had in my collection after spotting it draped over a lady’s knees in a photo from 1962.A fortnight ago, I wrote about club membership badges, especially enamel ones made by Perth-based Sheridans from about 1920. I also mentioned there had been plenty of digging going on at the old Sheridan’s site in West Perth and fossickers had turned up football badges. Well, it turns out they have turned up many hundreds of them. And they’re hitting

the market left, right and centre. One Football Budget reader was among the diggers and reported he had pulled out some WAFL badges. “Lots of footy badges have been found from clubs all over the State,” he said. “Most have no enamel, but quite a few with (enamel). We found some from Perth, South Freo and East Freo with enamel. Also country town clubs with enamel and without. At least five badges came from Northam clubs. Lots of 50s stuff.” Of course, all of this may work to crash what is a small market for WAFL membership badges, depending on how many are in decent condition. Beware of buying those without enamel, as they are basically blanks. Meanwhile, speaking of Sheridan’s, I spotted a couple of nice sets of cufflinks this week that were made by the company in the early 1980s. I hadn’t seen either set before, both of which were in plain gold and featured a WAFL logo. One set had “grand final” on them (thought no particular year was mentioned), while the other just had “WAFL”. They’re the first set of league cufflinks I have seen, though I have seen cufflinks with club logos for East Fremantle, Subiaco and West Perth and a set featuring the VFL logo. Finally, a rare program turned up for sale online this week. Back in the 1980s, the South-West town of Collie hosted a yearly event, called the

Coalfields Football Carnival.

The first, in 1983, featured Swan Districts and North Melbourne. In 1984, Footscray took on the black ducks, before Essendon came west in

1985. By 1986, West Perth had taken over the Collie zone, and the Falcons took on Collingwood in Collie. But the creation of the Eagles put an end to VFL teams travelling to Collie, and the 1987 game was between West Perth and East Perth. Anyway, programs from the 1983-1986 games are highly sought after, especially by collectors who follow the VFL teams that travelled across. Three copies of the program from the 1985 game between Essendon and Swans turned up just this week. They sold privately. The first one I ever saw at auction was from the 1986 game between Collingwood and West Perth, which sold for more than $180. I’ve only seen one at auction since, which was water damaged, and it still fetched $40.

A couple of homegrown champions and two who had a strong impact on WA football have been inducted into the Australian Football Hall of Fame. Defenders Brad Hardie and Ken Hunter plus former West Coast coach Mick Malthouse and AFL administrator Ron Evans, also a West

Perth forward, were among the 2019 additions to the illustrious club earlier this month. Hardie and Hunter are also members of the WA Football Hall of Fame. Both were part of the inaugural inductees in 2004.

Solid warm-up for AFLW U18s The AFLW WA State U18s preparations for the AFLW National Carnival continued last weekend with a thrilling one-point loss to a WAFLW All-Stars line-up in an exhibition game at New Choice Homes Park. The WA 18s begin their campaign against Queensland this weekend and will go in full of confidence after a strong performance against a handful of AFLW players. WA began the game in terrific fashion kicking their first goal inside the opening minute, before piling on two more to lead at the first break. Despite the strong breeze, WA held the All-Stars side to two goals in the second quarter, keeping their advantage to four goals at the main interval. Led by Courtney Guard and Claire Ortlep the All-Stars slowly worked their way back into the contest, kicking two goals in the third. Two late goals in the last quarter saw the WAFLW side gain a one-point lead, with the experienced team holding on to record a victory. Mikayla Hyde was impressive throughout the game for the AFLW WA 18s kicking two goals, while ruck-forward Mim Strom dominated the aerial battle. Roxanne Roux had a presence up forward, with Sarah Verrier also showing her class in the tight loss.

Western Australia started their NAB AFL U18s Championships in fine style with a 17-point victory over Vic Metro on Saturday. Captain Deven Robertson led the way for the Sandgropers with 31 possessions, seven clearances, five marks, five rebounding 50s, four inside 50s and three tackles. Other top possession winners included Trent Rivers (22), Riley Garcia (21), and Jeremy Sharp (20). Liam Henry led the goalkicking for WA with three, while Elijah Taylor, Tyrone Thorne and Ben Johnson each kicked two goals. WA got off to a fast start with Elijah Taylor kicking the opening goal of the game after taking a strong contested mark inside 50. Josh Worrell responded for the visitors with a magnificent set shot. another goal for the Victorians, before Jai Jackson duly converted another goal for the Sandgropers. The third quarter proved to be WA’s best quarter with Ben Johnson (two goals), Trent Rivers, Liam Henry and Tyrone Thorne hitting the scoreboard. Charlie Dean kicked a late goal for the Victorians to keep them within 29 points. In the final quarter, Elijah Taylor produced a moment of magic when he cleanly picked up the ball, shrugged off a tackle and snapped through a goal. Moments later, Thorne converted his second goal. Goals to Worrell (two), and Josh Honey for the visitors cut the margin to 17 points. Henry kicked one back for the home team, and moments later Trent Bianco scored another goal for the visitors but WA had secured the win.

This weekend, WA hosts South Australia at Optus Stadium as the curtain-raiser for the Fremantle-Port Adelaide AFL clash.

Newcomers get umpiring chanceOscar Wharton and Chad Pearson have lived out a childhood dream over the past month, making their WAFL League debuts as field and goal umpires. Pearson officiated his first fixture during West Perth’s thrilling five-point victory over Peel at Joondalup Arena in Round 7. While Wharton took on the difficult conditions at the same venue last weekend, with West Perth running over the top of West Coast in a 36-point win. WAFL and Talent Umpiring Specialist Dean Margetts couldn’t speak highly enough of both men and was thrilled to see their reward for hard work and dedication.

“Both Chad and Oscar have worked extremely hard over the pre-season, joining in various AFL running sessions and investing many hours in their physical preparations for League football,” Margetts said. “Umpires are not “gifted” league selection at WAFL level, and the patience of both umpires has seen the rewards come.” “They are both leaders on and off the field for us and live the standards we expect of a member of the WAFL Umpiring team” Both umpires will continue to excel at the elite level as they chase more games of league football in the not too distant future.

He has already hit the 100-match mark in the WAFL. But from Saturday Brock Higgins will have a century of appearances in a South Fremantle guernsey. Higgins started his senior career with East Perth in 2011 and represented the Royals 31 times before opportunities in the league team dried up with the club’s alignment with AFL unit West Coast. He moved to South Fremantle in 2014 and played 20 matches that season as he quickly established his 193cm, 103kg frame in the Bulldogs No.1 ruck position. The burly follower has even proved his standing in the competition by lining up for the WA State team in last year’s triumph over South Australia. Injury prevented Higgins from taking part in last month’s clash with the Croweaters But he showed his WAFL value again in Round 8 when he led South Fremantle to victory over arch-rival East Fremantle in the WA Day Derby.

THE SECRET LIFE OF PETSThe Secret Life of Pets 2 follows the 2016 blockbuster about the lives our pets lead after we leave for work or school each day. Max the terrier must cope with some major life changes when his owner gets married and has a baby. When the family takes a trip to the countryside, nervous Max has numerous run-ins with canine-intolerant cows, hostile foxes and a scary turkey. Luckily for Max, he soon catches a break when he meets Rooster, a gruff farm dog who tries to cure the lovable pooch of his neuroses.Illumination founder and CEO Chris Meledandri and his longtime collaborator Janet Healy produce the sequel to the comedy that had the best opening ever for an original film, animated or otherwise. The Secret Life of Pets 2 features the return of writer Brian Lynch (Minions) and once again will be directed by Chris Renaud (Despicable Me series, Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax). The Secret Life of Pets 2 opens on June 20.
